I don't know what your financial situation is, of course, so I'll just throw this out as a possible option.
I see an awful lot of used computers for sale in my area, and they're cheap. If you have a reputable used computer shop nearby, I wouldn't hesitate to investigate what might be available. People get rid of perfectly good computers all the time - either to get the "latest and greatest" or for some other reason having nothing to do with the age or condition of the system itself. In some cases, you can pick these up for 20 to 30% of the price paid new a year ago.
The shop should either have "wiped" the hard drive on the system to something like Dept of Defense standards OR installed a new hard drive, and then (in either case) done a fresh install of XP. Make sure you get the installation CDs that were used along with the packaging and the product license code. The shop should certify that the system is virus free, but the first thing before you put the system on a network is to install and run your own AV software (it will probably try to update over the Internet when it's run, but you can bypass that. Then, if everything's okay, hook the system up to the network and run AV again, this time allowing it to update.)
