here - and I would not recommend this field to anyone. She asked for opinions and we gave ours - we did not "make" our problems anybody else's.

25+ years exp. here and mistakes happen! sm
No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes, sometimes small ones, and sometimes real BIG ones.

As long as it doesn't happen repeatedly, I wouldn't worry about it.

It does make you feel inferior and shaken....Own up to it, apologize, and try not to do it again. Then, move on...Don't beat yourself up too much.

Been there, done that, and will probably be there again sometime in the future.
Hmmm.what's going to happen within the next 5 years? Is the sky going to fall and

like the dinosaurs, wipe out all the MTs?  Is a meteorite going to hit?  MT's not going anywhere.  Get over it people.

Apply even if they ask for 2-3 years experience. The worst that can happen is they won't ask you
nm
I do QA too and happen to agree with above
I get paid a decent line rate - and can make decent money if I can just give it a quick read and fill in the blanks - believe me I'm not getting rich here..... but when I have to fill in every other word - normally English words - because the MT can't go back and listen to it 3 times like I do - or she puts in contractions - or she does not use the samples provided her and does not follow the format - these things are very irritating.  I'm not QAing - I'm training - there is a HUGE difference... but there are not that many QA jobs out there so I'm not complaining.  I realize sometimes we see more of a doctor than the MT does - especially in these large hospitals - but you can tell when an MT is trying... and lots of these MTs are not trying very hard.
I happen to totally agree with her
and there is no need to get personal and/or nasty about it. I had my CMT also and it was as useless as the paper it was written on. The only ones who seem to put any value on it are the AAMT as they are the ones who get money in their pockets when one of us takes the exam...(oh excuse me the AHDI - I forgot they took MT out of their name!) Anyway, I totally agree 100% - a waste of time and money.
You are certainly titled to your opinion. I do not happen to agree. I assume sm
that those of us who do not share your viewpoint are entitled to our feelings and opinions.  Or is it no longer politically correct to espouse anything but viewpoints from your mind set?
I'll agree. Have had the bait n switch happen to me several times. nm
s
I agree.. but, my son was 5 years old

His first time in school and he wanted to play with it at recess. We did not know it was in his backpack or obviously we would not have allowed a toy of any sort at school rather it be a gun or a doll.  The reasoning behind the suspension was that other children may be frightened it was real. PLEASE!! It looks like a plastic toy.. and then the principal proceeded to grill my son "do you know what you have done etc".. He was FIVE years old. You would have thought he was in a gang and he was treated as such with the whole zero tolerance in school but in kindergarten.. I think we're under no direct threat.. Thanks for all the opinions out there. Goes to show we are all individuals with individual beliefs.

I have been an MT for 9 years and I agree on most of what you say but
When placing a job ad, where do they put it? Under general or Office/clerical, not under Healthcare, Medical, or professional. If you could see some of the reports I see, you would cringe on these so-called MTs. Don't number a list, don't use references, don't look at their account specifics, just type and think they're doing great...and graduate from a school that teaches MT (and not an online/correspondence school either). Everyone is out for the almighty buck. The local hospitals here hire TYPISTS because they want to keep their expenses low.

While I take pride in what I do and in believe quality-not quantity, you have these services chasing the big bucks. You get what you pay for and that is why the MT profession has gone so far downhill. We are considered TYPISTS or CLERICAL workers, not professionals and so, we don't get paid what we're worth. It's enough to get anybody down and not give a darn anymore.
Ouch!!!
How long before you were back xcribing? I fractured mine last Friday and cannot reach the mouse without it being painful or feeling like the break is popping in and out. I am in a figure 8 harness. Not very comfortable to say the least.
Wow!!!!??????? What is ouch about it???
Why would that hurt? It is soap. You use it on your hands and it doesn't hurt. Geez!!!!!!!!!
ouch
I cannot get past her look - can you say Elf???
Ouch!
I am sorry your postings included corrections on your spelling, etc. We all make mistakes. I would never point out mistakes from an email to a coworker of mine and we are all transcriptionists and friends also. I like to think we are all on the same team! Anywho, I have never been stalked in that way, but I would block e-mail also and use the same ideas the other ladies had about this. I'm sure they will get the hint! Hopefully "they" will get the hint and leave you alone soon. I wouldn't advise going any further really. I think it would be a waste of your time and energy which could be better used finding the perfect job for you! I would just chalk it up to the fact that I am so wonderful that companies are actually stalking me for my expertise! Good luck in your search for a new job, friend.
Ouch!

Can't really say it's the thought that counts with something like that, huh?  What  a kick in the nuts.

The sad part is, I felt guilty asking but I feel cornered.  I'm the sole support of my busted-a$$ 2-member household and the oil tank is empty, has been since last winter, and the cost of firewood went up, food went up, electricity, etc.  I'm watching my little American Dream go right down the crapper and frankly it's scaring the heck out of me.  Someone was mentioning abdominal pains the other day on here...I haven't poo'd in about a week--I kid you not.  I get so jealous when I hear others say they only have to work part-time or not work at all because hubby brings in the cash and bennies, but I'm really just wishing I could be them!

Oh well.  At least we got dental benefits so now I can almost afford to get my teeth looked at for the first time in 20 years!  Only lost one in the interim!

Ouch---Just trying to help her out
She's a widow (husband did not have life insurance), lost her job about a month ago, and is seeking anything to pay the bills.  She is not a Transcriptionist and transcription is only a VERY SMALL part of the job she's applying for.  However, as we all know, most of us use our spellcheck on a regular basis, or at least our lovely specialty dictionary, and she thought the job would work out okay when being able to utilize the spellchecker.  I have to agree with her on that point.  The spelling test she has to take is a written test before ever even being allowed to take the transcription part of the test and is not over basic terms, grammar, and such but over police type terms, which commoners would not use on a daily basis.
ouch...
I am hoping it is something simple like the video card but if it is the motherboard I need to weigh my options...I have a laptop that I got brand new at Christmas time so I really could wait for another desktop for a while...but then if I wait something might happen to the laptop...in my mind anyway---lol...
I agree - MA programs are 9 mos to 2 years

There is no licensing or regulation on who can work as a medical assistant, so one can even be hired and trained on the job, but these days, most MAs go to vocational school or a 2 yr CC program to learn the job.  MAs most often work in doctor's offices.

CNAs can get trained in 6 wks.  CNAs almost always work in LTC or hospitals.

The focus of training is entirely different.  CNAs assist the nurses, MAs assist the docs.

PA vs MA has been well covered already so I skip it.

I have worked for BTS for nearly 3 years and agree
with everything said.  The pay is direct deposit and always on time.  The MT manager is an AWESOME person to work for/with.  I too have had disagreements (several) with QA, but overall they are very helpful and do their best to work with you to become a better MT.  And best thing is...I have NEVER run out of work.
Oh, I totally agree with 30+ years

how can you go wrong?  Me with 20 years, I have been there and done that.  This CMT jizzjazz just came about as far as I'm concerned.  I've had a wealth of success and have my own accounts that do not require I know a book.  They go on my integrity and no I'm no where near perfect, but who is?  I have seen a lot and have experienced quite a bit in my years, and I'm only 37.  So go figure?  Wow, has this profession evolved?  I basically had 3 years of transcription in high school/medical secretary, and fell into it, but gee whiz, how this has become a production oriented/dog eat dog profession!

I only IC for one company on-line along with having my own accounts, and I can say the company knows the difference between IC and employee.  Yes, believe it or not, they will ask if I am available.  To me, that's true IC status.  I work from a pool, which is fine by me because if I get busy with other things, I know someone is keeping that client happy with that company.  I only do it for the experience and thoroughly enjoy my work.

I'm glad someone else is feeling it though with regards to IC versus employee.  Some will really get upset and say that the MTSO needs to cover the account and need to know when you are going to work.  WRONG!!!  The MTSO needs to cover the account.  Period.  The End.  They do not need to know what your hours of operation are or how many lines can you type in an hour.

agree...have been transcribing for over 16 years
and have never been asked if I am certified. Have never been offered more money to become certified either.
Appendicitis...ouch!.........sm
Right lower quadrant... and "VERY" tender on palpation.
Ouch, that's the pits

I worked for hospitals on Long Island in the early 1980s, and I was getting $8.00 per hour with benefits. And in those days, you didn't have to pay for medical insurance.

Ouch....worse than me...sm
It's been 10 years for me too, but I do occasionally manage a weekend if I work 14 hour week days.  Usually work 11-12 hour days.  I'm having a light day today which is extremely unusual.  I have 4 years to go and sometimes not sure I'll make it!
Wow. Popup ad. Ouch!
Am I the only one that got nailed with a mosquito-buzzing popup ad when clicking a link to read a message today? As a transcriptionist, my headset is almost always on and normally at full-blast as well. I understand MTStars need for advertising support, but is there a way to limit it to silent adverts only? That nearly blew my eardrums!
Ouch! HAHA :)

OUCH! Bet that hurt!!

I couldn't agree more. Lost my mom 13 years ago sm
this coming August. I miss her the most on Mother's Day.
agree - haven't had a car payment in years
paid $6000 cash for a 93 Volvo wagon back in 2002.  Too many people think they need a new (or pricey) vehicle and really have better things to do with their $400-600 per mo. Every time I look into getting something new or simply newer, I decide that I neither want to take that much money out of savings,  nor do I want to have such an outrageous car payment.  I would totally prefer a brand new car, but it seems like such a waste of money.
With 33 years' experience, I agree. It doesn't sm
get any easier, because there is a constant influx of ESLs into this country who can barely make themselves understood. If you want to translate, yes, translate, and transcribe pidgeon English
day in and day out, make less and less money as the years go by, then this is the career for you.

I used to love what I do. It used to be rewarding. Now I feel like I'm following behind elephants with a shovel.

Well I'm doing this full time and ouch !!!

How do you make any money???? Typing and shortcuts is not the problem but trying to figure out some of what the dictators are saying is time consuming... How do you make money????????????

Though I love the research and find this interesting 40.00 a day is not going to cut it... Does it get better?????  I feel stupid !!!!!!!!!!!!!

pt does get her mammagram daily. LOL ouch sm

GYN HISTORY

G2, P2.  Her pregnancies were uncomplicated.  She has not seen a gynecologist in over two years, but she does get her mammogram daily.    Uhhh.... I don't think so Mr. MD!!!   You couldn't get me to do that daily if ya paid me!

Ouch! How'd you do that? You'll get used to using the other foot.
I had to use my other foot for a while because my sciatica was acting up. Hope you feel better soon!
OUCH!!!! think I'll pass on the....nm

I agree, easier but I worked on production years ago
as I think the original poster Patti also did and I was, shall we say threatened 1 time for being cutoff from production and having to do paper work because of the fact I out typed the other transcriptionists there- it can be done, I have done it working on production, now is more simple time and I also like using goggle, etc. When working like that years ago I never took the time to read over each report- waste of time- do not do that now. I have been in the situation 2 times in my career of being told how much I make, etc and most did not like. One hospital I worked for in the 80s only had 2 transcriptions for the entire 300+ bed- we never used outside work, kept things up and yet told look what we make! I see lots of people who only do this job so they can stay at home. I stand by my original posting.
I agree. It's an impossibility for me even with years of experience AND good dictators. nm
m
Agree with poster... it takes 2-3 years from graduating from a program sm
to start to make any decent wage.  I personally love this job.  Where else can you get a job that requires no college degree that you can make 40,000-50,000 per year???
OUCH! I had a private policy with BC/BS for $180/month sm

and it was a pretty good plan -- Affordablue -- had a $25 copay for office visits or something like that.  That was just a single plan, though.  It included dental coverage too, bot other than covering for routine cleaning and such, it was kind of useless when paying for crowns and other "big" items.

Sounds like you have a good deal.  Fortunately, I am working for Transtech now and have affordable insurance .. whew!

Oh, ouch! I hope things improve soon!
That's the very reason I've never took that plunge into independent...it's just so HARD for you guys. Hats off to you for all your hard work. Good luck.

Agree, agree, agree! Just listen to Benny Hinn..

he speaks perfect English, especially when asking for money!  Also, in my opinion, blanks should be left in the doc's dictation if not able to be transcribed, maybe then they will know that are NOT understood.  With QA fixing them, what need is there for them to care if we understand them or not?

Also worn out 2 keyboards in 4 years. I will never retire. DH will come home some day from work and I'll be slumped over my keyboard. I put in 14 hours a day 7 days a week.
how could it not happen?
and how could we have stopped accepting ESL's?  I dont know about you but I have worked as an MT for many years and there is no way we could have stopped it.  First of all, doctors come from all over the world, medicine is a universal language with many different accents..that is just the way it is.  Most doctors I have worked with have accents.  That is part of the job, learning ESL doctors.  I personally dont want any work sent overseas, even the mumblers, ESL's, etc.
This used to happen to me
This used to happen to me back in the 1970s..When I told my doctor, he said it was just that I woke up before my body was able to start producing my chemistries and such fast enough..So I was suspended, if you will, for a few seconds, which felt to me like minutes..I can remember waking up in my mind but my body would not move and I would panic thinking I have to get up..move arm, move leg, get up!!  I believe totally in the paranormal and spiritual word.  I have had experiences in the spiritual world both with family who have passed, animals who have passed and just researching it myself..but..hmmmm..I will have to research what you post about the not waking experience..I tell you, it is quite a frightening experience.  P.S.:  I love Sylvia Browne..I have gone to three of her seminars in Los Angeles..
Does this every happen to anyone besides me? (please SM)
After transcribing for lengthy periods of time, do you feel irritable? Kinda like you want to run to the nearest window and jump out cause you feel all this inner energy but have to sit in a chair and type and it is driving you nuts?

I probably need to takes walks or do something physical but am working 8-10 hours a day.

Just wondering if I am going nuts or what. It is rather unnerving, this feeling. Maybe it is menopausal as I am nearing that age, also. Can anyone identify with this strange feeling?
Where did this happen?
