You can save the SH file in a text file and import to IT that way. sm
You may have to do some cleanup in the SH text file, but it sure would be faster than re-entering them all manually.
Why not just import the file?
If you are already using a transcribing program like Express Scribe or Olympus can't you copy the file from the CD and upload it into that program? You need a special program to type from a CD directly, I think. Just a thought.
Unfortunately, you can't import your ESP file to EXText. It won't convert. I've tried and

I would just turn off ESP as suggested below and use your Shorthand.  I didn't do that because the hospital I work for provided my equipment and were told in no uncertain terms we could not load any software on our PCs without it being approved by the IT department and since EXText comes with its own abbreviation expander, there was not reason to approve mine.  I had to input each and every Expander from scratch!  It sucked, but in the long run it was a good thing.  My ShortHand file was geared more towards radiology because that's basically all I did on my last job.  So a lot of it would not have been helpful for the medical records stuff I'm doing now.

Like you care why I don't use my Shorthand still!  Sorry to go on and on.  I get so bored by myself here at home, I can't help myself from virtually gabbing every chance I get.

Looking for good microcassette desktop player
I haven't purchased and/or looked for a transcription machine in quite a few years. I did a Goggle search but I prefer the expertise from those that have the real experience using one. :)

I had a high end Sony many years ago that broke down several times in the first couple years i used it so I am a bit sour on those. I realize though by now they could be made totally different. I really didn't care for their foot pedal at that time either (way too much flexing of my ankle for my comfort).

I have had 2 Olympus Pearlcorders that I have used for at least 6 years, probably longer. I haven't seemed to be able to find just a transcription machine now (without record feature). I feel if I get 3 years out of a lower priced one like these I certainly did get my money's worth. :) However, due to aging and loosing some hearing (that can come naturally with aging), I think I may need a better quality machine.

I do want one that is a microcassette player, has an adjustable backspace on the machine, backspace and forward on the pedal & erases tapes. I would like to find one with excellent sound quality as well. I am willing to pay up to $500 for one that is highly recommended by you pros.

Thanks so much.
Sandi
(If I am talking in circles and/or am incoherent, I apologize as I just came home from having surgery today on my foot - and my latest transcription machine died this morning so I need to order one on line fast).

you need to change your properties of those file types to open with ES and not media player. sm
go to your folders by start, explore. find where you saved those files to. once you find a file, right click on it and click on properties. under the general tab, look down 3 lines to where it says open with and i bet it says media player. click change, find the express scribe program. make sure you check that box under there that says always use this program to open this type of file. then you can either right click again, click open with, select express scribe and it will automatically load in ES or you can hit the load button on ES, find where the file is saved, select and it loads it. if this doesn't work, email me.
Download Express Scribe (free player) and see if you can pull the voice file into it. nm

Start Stop voice file player and conflicts with Spyware Doctor

I was having problems with StartStop and talked to one of their techs this morning.  One of the bugs it was having was fixed when I turned off Spyware Doctor so I need a new anti-spyware program.

I’m thinking of trying Spyware Blaster.  I called to see if there were any conflicts with that one but had to leave a message.  In the meantime, does anyone use StartStop voice file player and also use Spyware Doctor without any buggy conflict problems between the two softwares?

Our service uses Send This File
Extremely nice subscription-based service we use to transfer both voice and document files, has some limitations but is very inexpensive for secure and basic transfer features. Will transfer large voice files very efficiently.

don't print for them. Send the file to their office...

you might as well start smart. Push the advantages of them having the file in their office. Doctor gave wrong physician name? No problem! They don't have to wait for you. They correct it in their own Word file. They need to archive their transcription. You however are required by HIPAA to only hold it long enough to do billing. So that is why you, smart business person that you are, send it to their office in a digital format.

1.  Can anyone or everyone recommend a good medical spell checker that interfaces with Word?  Stedman's

2.  What about an Expander to work with Word? I know some use Instant Text, but at least one says she uses the Word Autocorrect feature. (I think.)  Does the Word autocorrect hold a bunch....can you put whole reports into it...large capacity? I only use ShortHand because I have a Meditech account and Shorthand works with all Windows based applications. Some of the other ones didn't. Will defer this to other MT's.

3.  You all mentioned that the docs usually supply their letterhead and to use plain copy paper for subsequent pages.  Does the MTSO usually supply the paper or the docs?  Same question with sticky paper...that sounds expensive!

Write a macro to put the letterhead into a header on the letters he dictates. Then they can use plain paper to print the whole file.

Think about whether he wants logs or not. They can be good (line count) but a pain. Not sure if you make any money off of it or not. Look for ways to streamline your billing, i.e. don't be telling him you will take off for the ones where he dictates his standard paragraph, etc. and make line counting a nightmare. Most of all, use what is already out there...i.e. why pay for a TASP when you can send stuff over the internet for free. Why DRIVE to deliver transcription when you can send it over the internet for free...get it?

inexpensive tips you gals can think of that can be gotten ready now besides the main transcriber? (Would want to wait on that to see which type the office uses.)

Now that I have the ball rolling, I am also going to contact the two MTSOs that I know locally and ask if they have any overflow.  Might also send a sample psych report to my shrink and see if he can spread the word.  Scary stuff, but you gals really helped!  Thanks so much for all the encouragement!!

Send the file to them via hypersend as it has tracking. sm
You can see exactly when they picked it up and have proof of it. Then you can charge them for every resend you have to do (with proof of unnecessary resend).
Just send emails to your team and take it easy... you really thing that is what

Easy backup file transfer alternative for non-tech-savvy client
Hello all,

I have a new client who is not tech-savvy at all. She lost her Transcriptionist and transcriptions are backing up. She is so desperate she is willing to try digital with me. (yay) I hope everything with the FTP setup goes easily for her, but if for some unforseeable reason we cannot get it to work, I was wondering if someone here could recommend an easy alternative, if only to get the first few dictations to me while we work out the FTP. She is incredibly frustrated and on edge at the moment, so anything to ease this transition would be a lifesaver!

Thank you all so much for your help!

YES, it is possible to import them to Word
My husband has done this for me, but he had to write a program to do it (easy for him because he is a software engineer!). I have no idea exactly how he did it (he also wrote a program to import them into DQS from Word when I first started on the platform with all my little macros). He is currently in the Middle East working on a project and cannot help us right now, but try posting on MTDesk and see if anyone can help. The point is that it CAN be done! Good luck. :-)
Did you get to import your old expander? (sm)
I would think switching would be super hard if you didn't have your old word list. Also like others said, the marker keys are a trick. I introduced several at my old company to IT. I used to tell people to start with the spacebar as expander, then when they got comfortable with the screen at the bottom, to choose their marker keys and practice using their old list with the new keys. Once that got easier, then I had them do an "includes" to put the Medstart list under their own list and to start getting acquainted with the IT list, OR do a compilation from documents and make their account list for account-specific terms. It's easier to just to do one little thing at a time rather than get overwhelmed.

Also, on the bottom screen, people would tell me they felt like they had to slow down and look because the selections keep changing and I used to recommend only looking down there when you thought "hey, wonder if there is a shortcut for that?" and to remember that the program is basically only saying "you want fries with that?" Don't know if that's one of the issues you have, but it was pretty common IME.

Sometimes it's just too much information, too fast, and that can slow you down for sure.
Import from SFW to AutoCorrect
I have been hired by an employer who uses AutoCorrect.  My entries are all in ShortHand for Windows.  Does anyone know how to import (COPY into, NOT MOVE) expansions from Shorthand for Windows to AutoCorrect?  Very much appreciated.
Rename your normal.dot file to something else then restart Word. It will create a new file.

How to import Shorthand macros into ESP?
Can anyone tell me how to import my ShortHand macros into ESP? My company would not help me do it. I can't believe they wouldn't when they are the ones who tolld me Shorthand macros were compatible with ESP anyway.
How to import autocorrect instructions

Okay..I went to the Escription site the other day and searched the knowledgebase on how to backup and save your autocorrect files..but that information didn't help me. It didn't work on my machine, because it said to do a bunch of steps andthen told me to find the Macros folder in the office program files folder.. but I didn't have a macros folder on my machine and the file it told me to find wasn't installed on my machine anywhere.. anyway, I contacted support at Escription and they told me how to do it, so I figured I'd post here for anyone else who needs the information. Hope it helps!

You can navigate to the following directory to back up your auto correct file for Word.

C:/Documents and Settings/your name/Application Data/MicroSoft/Office/

and back up the file named MSO1033.acl.

This is the auto correct file.

If you do not see the Application Data directory click on the 'Tools' option on the top menu and select 'Folder options'. From here click on the 'View' tab and click on the radio button that says 'Show hidden files and folders'.

Thanks,

oh..and just in case you can't figure it out how to import it to the new machine...once you save that file to a CD or disk or whatever, you just navigate to the same folder on your new machine and paste it, click yes to overwrite the existing file and you're done .  I know you all probably know that part, but you just never should assume that people know things. LOL

You can import your AutoCorrect list

Hi Patty,

You can import your AutoCorrect list into Instant Text so you can continue using the list that you have already created.

IT will expand using the font that is currently active in your document.  If you have an entry that you want to be in a certain font every time you expand, you can do that as well using Formatted Entries.

For more information on IT V Pro, please see the link below.  Or you can always give us a call at 800-355-5251.

Kind regards,

Kristen

I think it is the same type of file, so rename it and replace your autocorrect file with your DQS us

Help..I lost my word file. How can I retreive a file that has been changed? sm

I was working on a large file and had saved it in Word. I then went back to work on the file and hit a key that made the page go blank.  When I went to close the document it asked me to save any changes on the document. I answered yes, and now when I click on that document it is all blank! Shouldnt the previous info saved be there, even if the current stuff is not? Please help me!! Thank you

Depends on the file format of the Short Cuts file.
ShortHand comes with a utility file that can import various formats. You can get that file with the trial download of SH.

Is there any way to import Word Autocorrect entries into WordPerfect?

I've been Googling it and there is some info about going from WordPerfect to Word, but I can't find anything about importing them from Word to WordPerfect.

File taxes under the name on file w Social Security....
Name on W2 doesn't have to match, but your tax return has to match SS records. They don't want your marriage license or anything else. Did that for 13 years as instructed by IRS. Didn't have to change it with SS until state changed rules requiring drivers license to match SS records. Still use my maiden name in some limited circumstances.
macro to import expansion list into MSWord Autocorrect

Here is my macro that will import your expansions into MSWord.  Your list needs to be in the following format for this macro to work:

tp=the patient

copd=COPD

chf=CHF

There needs to be a hard return at the end of each entry.  If you have any expansions that contain an equal sign or a hard return, you will need to enter those into your autocorrect manually.  Here is the macro:

Sub Add2AutoCorrectList()
Dim AddName, AddValue As String
Dim W, C, A, L, Y, T, N As Long
Dim CountWords As Boolean
Selection.WholeStory: Selection.Collapse
N = ActiveDocument.Words.Count: C = 0: A = 0: T = 0
ScreenUpdating = False
While N > 0
x = Selection.MoveEndUntil(cset:=("=), Count:=wdForward)
    If x = 0 Then
        End
    End If
Selection.MoveEndUntil cset:=("=), Count:=wdForward
AddName = Trim(Selection.Text)
L = Selection.Words.Count
With Selection
    .Delete: .Delete
    .MoveEndUntil cset:=Chr$(13), Count:=wdForward
End With
AddValue = Trim(Selection.Text)
Y = Selection.Words.Count
AutoCorrect.Entries.Add (AddName), Value:=(AddValue)
Selection.Delete , Count:=2
T = L + 2
N = N - T
C = C + 1
A = A + 1
If N < 1000 Then
ScreenUpdating = True
N = ActiveDocument.Words.Count
End If

If A = 100 Then
Application.ScreenRefresh
'ScreenUpdating = True
StatusBar = N & " " & C & " " & " entries processed!"
A = 0
End If
Wend

End Sub

One word of warning:  When I posted a line counting macro here some time ago, I could not get a quote mark in the code to post, so the macro as posted would not work, and I had to followup with a post explaining how to correct that.  This macro is a bit more complicated than the other one was, and although I will look at the code as soon as this posts, if it doesn't come through perfectly, and you don't understand my corrections, you can e-mail and I will send it to you.

Also, I wrote a companion macro that will list your autocorrect into a document so that you can import it into another computer or just keep it as a backup in case you lose your normal.dot.

Well, Word is easy to buy and easy to install. Word 97 works great. Cheap. SM
I still would not work anywhere I could not use a spell checker with grammar checker and a Steadman's Medical Spell Checker.

IF they want people to TRANSCRIBE MEDICAL REPORTS, then I guess they better get the programs they need.

It's like probably 110% easier to buy and install Word 97 than to try to program their own programming. And, yes, I do mean Microsoft Word 97. Why? Because you can install it unlimited times, in case you need to install the operating system again. And it has a few features that Microsoft, in its un-wisdom, took away in Word 2000 and 20003 and 2007. So, yes, I'd go with Word 97 for its cheapness and it works better than the later versions. Just my opinion, with 20 years experience being an MT. So what if they "don't have it" on their computer? It's easy to get.
desktop
Can you save your files to your desktop until this is fixed possibly?
The same way you do with a desktop. It
depends on the type of connection you have/need on your pedal.   If you use a USB it is simple, just plug into a USB port, if you need a game or serial port then you have to get an adapter and then you still plug into a USB port.
New Desktop
If under 1000 dollars is true, I would skip the used/refurbs and go directly to Costco. You or your friend must be a member but they have a system with a TERRABYTE Of memory. You cant go wrong with that much system. It is 600.00 without a monitor and you can get a compatible monitor for 100 or 200 these days.
Right click on your desktop (sm)
and select Arrange Icons and uncheck Auto Arrange.
A laptop is really no different than a desktop and whatever

you need on your desktop to work, you want on your laptop.   More and more laptops aren't coming with a dial-up modem and I would want that if traveling so that you have another option for connection.   Depending on how/where you travel you may never need it, but I think you always need several options for connecting.   I have used a laptop only for 5 years.   I do use an external keyboard, but it isn't wireless.   I don't know if computers have the ability to have something built-in for a wireless keyboard and/or mouse, but if not you have to have to connect something to your computer and that will just be another piece of equipment to have to keep you with.

There are a lot of companies who advertise "internet based," but that doesn't mean necessarily that you can just download dictation and work off-line.  Many companies want you to type live into their system, so if you are going to be looking for a new position you need to be sure about the details.

Some companies require you to use their equipment, so traveling wouldn't work well with something like that.   If you are able to use your own equipment if you had a laptop already they could load your laptop to start with.

Then seriously, save it to your desktop. That's it.
.
I have an HP laptop and a desktop....sm...

I've had the laptop since January 2007 and the desktop since December 2005. I have been pleased with both.  Tech support is from India but make sure you tell them you use your computer for business purposes and you'll get someone who speaks very good English.  Otherwise, you'll be repeatedly saying, "Scuse me.  Could you repeat that?"

My DH has two HP laptops and has been pleased.  Then again, my DD and her father, my ex-husband, both have Dell laptops and have been pleased.  They don't run theirs as much as I run mine though with several programs running at one time.

Get Windows XP Pro.  Don't go with Vista.  There are still some compatibity issues with MT software.
