Only your son knows what it's like....

to be in his shoes - we can't begin to understand what they go through and he is certainly old enough to know. My son had an opposite experience - small town - we didn't kiss up to the coaching staff and he didn't get to play the sport he wanted to play. He made the decision to go out every year in spite of the fact that the coach wouldn't let him play. Teammates offered to quit if the coach didn't let him play, but he told them not to - he just let the coach sit behind the desk each year and tell him that he was cut.

Our son went on to college and played intramural ball for 4 years and now plays on 2 different teams at the YMCA - all teams that he was asked to be on because of his skill.

High school sports are not the training ground for the future that some would like to say that it is. It is much more often a source of anger, feelings of helplessness, creation of bitterness between kids that have been friends for years - I could go on and on.

Let your son's decision be his decision. He is the only one that can make it.
