Focus mentoring program
Focus has a great mentoring program---they gave me a start fresh out of school. They were very patient and taught me the ropes. Started out on a clinic account, but now doing a huge variety of work types. There is a large volume of ESL docs, so you will get an education on the accents. Be prepared for low earnings at first, until you pick up speed. May even be best to start part-time and have another job on the side until you are making money as an MT. It was a rude awakening for me when I gave up my well paying full-time job.
I was very lucky to find them right out of school, and I now work for them and another company. I have almost 2 years under my belt and still learning, but I am amazed at the progress I have made so far. I will always be grateful to Focus for giving me a chance.
I need to find a legitimate mentoring program! pls. help?
Can anyone recommend one?
I know of a company who is restarting up their mentoring program for newly-graduated MTs. A GREAT
company to work for - I think they are independent contractor status, though not sure about their mentoring program status. At any rate, they are willing to take new grads and help them transition into actually working! The women who owns the company is truly wonderful. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her, though I don't at the moment. The company is Accu-Stat in Wisconsin! Keep that name somewhere on a sticky or something! Really great people, and she did mention that she really wants to restart this program she used to have for newbies! Blessings to you and good luck! Have fun! Cause it sure can be fun, while having to work, which, of course, is not fun in and of itself, huh?? Oh, to be independently wealthy. Congrats on your new baby, by the way!! And that's SO great that your Mom is there for you! You have a good example to follow!
Mentoring, etc.
I would like to have someone check my knowledge base on medical transcribing. I have been a medical Transcriptionist years ago in a small hospital with only 12 physicians on board and one transcriptionist -- me. I'd like to retire from my job as administrative assistant to the hospital president and become an at-home transcriptionist. But, I, too took the PCDI course three to four years ago and made 96. I also took a medical terminology course at the local junior college and made a 4.0 GPA. I'd sure like to know where my strengths and weaknesses are in this field.
Please email me at delgerri@yadtel.net.
Thanks.
Not sure what you mean by mentoring
as I have been doing this type work now for 20+ years. They offered 13$ an hour but just sounds a little strange when I read other posts here, like hitting the road running when a hire-on.
pay for mentoring
If they give you and promise you a job, 99 dollars small price to pay, but how long is mentoring and what is starting rate after initial period of time. Ask questions and get answers up front.
We have all had to pay dues in this business, some more than others. I can speak with conviction after 17+ years
MENTORING
Contact AAMT (or whatever we're calling it these days). At a meeting last year I heard a national representative talk about the mentoring programs they were setting up. In my state, Maine, there is one at a hospital in Portland. Also, Focus Infomatics seems legit. I've recommended it to my students.
Rosie, MT teacher
OSI has mentoring
OSi has mentoring, as well as Amphion just started one.
OSI Mentoring Dissolved
I applied for a position with them and was informed that their mentoring program has been dissolved and I was given a link to www.mt2b.com about the possibility of an externship program affiliated with OSi later this year.
MT mentoring email network
Hello, I was curious if anyone out in MT land would be interested in starting a new MT mentoring program with me. I'm not advertising or anything like that, I just have an idea that I would like to have a sort of email network that new MTs (or experienced ones too) might be able to email me their question and I would have a group of MTs I could email the question out to who could respond if they knew the answer. Does that make sense? This would be a free service just to help fellow MTs out.
I think this is something that would be invaluable to new (or old) MTs because I remember being a newbie at home and being sort of lost in space as it were. If you are interested you can email me.

Try an inhouse position for more intensive mentoring
I typed my first 3 years as an MT at a hospital and I found the mentoring I received from seasoned MTs, and being able to talk to the doctors and other staff, a really big plus. I also found it better when you're at the beginning of the learning curve to have an hourly position vs a production position.
You might want to consider inhouse as well to help you see the big picture as to why the doctors won't dictate more clearly, why nobody has the manpower to scruitinze every report, how sometimes the mistakes found in reports have been edited and put in there BY the doctors, and the low respect in general MTs get compared to the rest of the health professionals out there. This might help you gain some perspective as to some of the "whys".
You might ponder that MTSO's are not going to scold their clients to learn better dictation habits in order to make the MT's job easier - that would just alienate the client. Inhouse, should you personally want to scold the offending dictator, they will often laugh in your face and tell you to deal with it. In general, doctors do as they please and our jobs exist for their convenience, not the other way around.
What's your line rate offer for mentoring/subcontracting?

This CAN be successful! This is the best way - (sm)
there is, through a "viral" internet e-mail campaign, to let everyone in this country know what's been happening to their personal records. I signed it and sent it to every single person on my email list.
I think periodically you should renew this post so that it doesn't fall down to the bottom of the page.
If we all keep pushing on this, as a coalition of many thousands of MTs in the US, we can bring this to the attention of the lawmakers in this country, and hopefully get this practice to STOP.
Successful, nah, not now
I years ago made a decent living in this business but the salary has fell so much that it is not what it was once. I work part-time now because I only want to work that much - do not plan on retirement because I want to be able to work and double dip from social security and get full pay so that ought to be nice- like in the past when I really had to work 2 jobs to make the really big $$$$. I am really glad I am at a time in my life where no kids to bring up, only the monthly bills (not home nor car) as hubby pays for those so have it fairly easy. I could never raise children on the salary most are earning now.
I am a successful MT with ADD sm
I manage it. Some days I have I can't sit still-itis and it is VERY DIFFICULT. I have compensated by being extremely fast, detail oriented in shorter spans and I simply let myself take breaks. I have to work at not taking internet surfing breaks, but if I can manage that, I get a lot of lines. This week I have 7500 at one job and 2000 at another. I don't work more than about 1-1/2 hours without getting up at least once, and no, I only have one 16-18 hour day each week. The rest are 10 and under.
Yes, happy and successful. :-)
I don't know what to tell you except Walmart is successful and some of
the supermarkets are going down because of it. The people who are shopping there are not uneducated people and it is in high-end financial growing part of town. I only shopped in a Walmart Superstore once and it was packed in the middle of the day. In spite of all the bad publicity, Walmart keeps growing and people like shopping there.
My sister was successful sm
She went to Curves and lost about 20 pounds (didn't have much to lose). She loved it. They have an eating plan that she went on and she liked that too. If you're not used to doing exercise, this is the place to start. If you already exercise, it might be too slow for you. Can you do a trial? Good luck!!
I am not sure you would say I was "highly successful," but...
I do all the stuff the others do. I use the platform Expander and I will take a day every few weeks and really pay attention like for the first hour of the morning that day and enter Expanders for EVERYTHING that looks like it will work...single words, phrases, endings, etc. If you transcribe every day, you sometimes overlook words and phrases you could be adding to your expander so you can type faster.
I also don't do the mundane during work hours. I dont answer the phone unless it is my kids. I don't "throw in a load of laundry." I don't answer the doorbell. I limit my net surfing. Few email readings...maybe a quick look at lunch. I work 4 tens and never take lunch. I break only to stretch, get coffee, make a salad, answer my kids' phone calls.
I also do a power hour, usually mid afternoon when I start to fade. One hour of typing as hard and fast as I can. Believe me, that hour flies.
Also, I know it is an old trick but worth mentioning. Any easy words commonly transposed I put in my expander teh for the, ND for and, etc., so you do not have to wait for a spell checker to do it at the end. I also add on. tp = the patient; tpss = the patient states; tpsd = the patient stated and so on.
Hope that helps...nothing new but it does work...
Need to hear from successful MTs at Webmedx
I heard about their incentive program. It is really that good? Can you make a lot of $$ there? Do they run out of work?
If you have been successful at encouraging your child
My son, almost 19, has wanted to be in law enforcement since he was about 5. Lately, though, his motivation has been waning. Of course, he has a girlfriend, who incidentally *hates to work*. We really want him to consider joining the Air Force, get his college and training, finish his tour, and come home to work at the sheriff's department (I know, I'm probably dreaming right...). If you've been successful at encouraging your child this way, please share your experience and advice.
So what is it that you do that you're so successful at, & how much do you make? (nm)

Have you tried Accupuncture. I have a friend and this was successful for her.
I personally do not have experience with this, but it has helped a friend of mine.
As you probably know, you may be experiencing some rebound headaches from the RX you are taking.
My own personal opinion and experience, I would try weaning off everything and start from scratch to see what helps and what doesn't. You may even have seasonal allergies contributing to your headaches.
I have done this and it was successful - however, I did it under the guidance of my MD.
Maybe it is time to see your primary care physician and see if you agrees with this approach.
What traits do successful supervisors have?
I want to know what I can do to become the best supervisor possible. Personally, I have had only one great supervisor in all my years and what I found is that she displayed, fairness, objectivity, a sense of humor, consistency. Can you tell me what your idea of the perfect supervisor is?
ASR isn't successful? Its like 100% a complete success! Are you kidding?
MQs speech rec technology is sweeping the industry. Just run a Google, dear poster, and get your facts even remotely straight before you post! Radiology speech rec is a HUGE success, as well as their acute care. What planet have you been living on? It needed perfecting, and, well....Its nearly there! Post facts if you must - much better than completely false ignorant claims.
To be SUCCESSFUL at MT, you'll need more than 1 class in transcribing. sm
However, you are off to a good start having had A&P and terminology and being a coder. Unfortunately, personal experience and family history don't give you all that much preparation for a career in MT, nor does just working in a medical office. But, if you are a successful coder, you do have a better base to build on. Coding and MT are very different, but you do have exposure and familiarity with more medical terms than the average person would. To be truly prepared for a career in MT, and I stress that it is a career, I have to suggest a full MT program, preferably one that includes a practicum/internship in its curriculum. If you continue to work in a medical office, I would look into who currently does their transcription, and see if you can practice on old tapes that they may have, see how you do on your first attempt at transcribing. Of course you won't be great right away, but it will at least give you a realistic vision into the actual work.
and you resent successful white people

Yes, spotted off and on through 2 successful pregnancies plus had ectopics...sm
would have to say spotting is NOT a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. The bleeding from an ectopic is all internal. You will have stomach pains, pain around your rectum or worse if it actually ruptures. But an ectopic is pretty easy to see on an ultrasound so if you have concerns about that, just get an ultrasound and have them track quantitative HCG's, as they are...
Best of luck and try not to worry, though I know I worried myself sick
Secrets of Highly Successful MTs? Please share!
I'd really be interested to learn if there are any tips you 40k&up folks could share with those of us who are... more financially challenged. What is your schedule like? Do you log off every time you get up to get a cup of coffee, etc? Obviously you don't spend your work days on message boards; do you have any tips for how to Stay Focused?
Sorry if I sound ignorant; I have been doing this for many many years and still struggle with the same self-discipline issues I had way back when. I'd love to hear from those who have actually made good money at this how they did it. Thanks!
Anyone successful with full screen monitor sm
hooked connected to a laptop and how did you get it to work. I have been trying to get my monitor and laptop to interact with one another, but no such look. Can anyone help me with this? I do not think I can look at this laptop screen all day. Thanks!!

they are jealous and hateful of anyone, family or friends who are successful.
They think they don't have to work too hard or follow the rules of society. Sometimes they embellish the truth or tell lies of ommission to have people feel sorry for them. There are lots of signs relative to how other people think that this person is way off base. Sometimes all they do is want to sleep. Other times they are on the phone for hours at a time. Something is off.
We will only be successful in unionizing when everyone realizes all American MTs are being short SM
changed. My attitude should be everybody's attitude. We should ALL feel fed up with the way we are treated. We are the work horses in this industry. Without us, MTSOs don't get paid, and at the hospitals, the charts won't be complete, coders can't code, billers can't bill, and nobody makes any money.
If we continue to accept the status quo, we can count on making less money. It's about time for everyone to be outraged and turn our backs on those MTSOs that don't offer a fair wage or who outsource our jobs to third world countries!
I need the money just as much as the next MT, but I made my sacrifices to get the job I have now. I worked in the office (oh the horror), paid for daycare (even more horror), and commuted into the city every day because I refused to take another sucky job with an MTSO paying 8 cpl and giving me the bottom of the barrel to type. I FINALLY found a decent paying job that allows me to work from home, gives me decent dictators, offers me benefits, and doesn't cheat me out of lines. More importantly, they treat me with respect and appreciate the job I do.
So don't tell me my attitude is wrong. You're attitude is wrong. You simply want to stir the pot, but not make a real difference. Sure I put my family above everything else and sure I worry about my pocketbook before I worry about yours, but you know what, I cared enough about my profession to say I'm not going to put up with it anymore. I cared enough about my profession that I worked in the office rather than take a wage that was a slap in the face to my years of experience. I cared enough about my profession to hold out until I found the one good job.
And now I care enough about my profession to say to you are worth every penny of the 7 cpl you're probably earning and 7 cents won't even get you a piece of bubble gum. Most of here are worth much much more.

It will count everything if you go in the settings and program it to. Good program!
Sylcount is an awesome and accurate counting program also. That will count everything if you "tell it to".
You can use Shorthand in ANY program, it works outside your program
I have never found a platform it did not work with and I have worked on several different versions of Meditech. Just start using it.
QA comment
I just wanted to say a few things from the world of QA. There are some MTs who get dictators the likes of which I just cannot even describe as far as ESLs. Oh my. My heart just bleeds for you all - I mean it. I don't know how you do it, the dictators are that awful. But most of you MTs who get these language-murdering dictators struggle and persevere thru usually endless reports. It IS noticed, though you might think its not. Not that peon QA people can do anything for you, but I do notice and applaud you. And I DO mention names of these MTs to account managers on a regular basis, praising their effort on these impossible dictations. Don't know if it helps, but I like to believe it does! On the flip side, there are other MTs who are just a disgrace to our profession - they're not learning or new (we can tell). They are simply lazy and sloppy, making the most horrendous careless STUPID mistakes one can even imagine. Sometimes my mouth just hits my desk in horror. And I just shake my head and wade in and fix the entire report myself - that's what I'm there for, right? And for those who take offense that some mistakes are stupid - well, there are some that are stupid! No questions are stupid, but mistakes sure can be! I wish all of you could see firsthand what is out there as far as the quality of MTs. I know you would be amazed at the disparity between MTs. And we ALL makes mistakes, yes, but its how you handle them that counts. I try to be so kind and respectful to all with my corrections, even the lazy sloppy ones. So many MTs are so sweet and write back and thank me for the help, which is totally not expected, while the lazy ones write back screaming at the injustices of their errors! Or they call the president of the company screaming in indignation! Its a shame - I could give dozens of examples of absolutely incredible lazy not-thinking mistakes, but I would never want to embarass someone who I probably QA'd and who might read my post. I never want to hurt a soul, but really wish some MTs would just think while they were transcribing. Some MTs do try so hard - and with all the odds stacked against them by the dictators from outer space! Just my rambling thoughts at the start of a long night shift in QA-land!

Please also check borderline personality disorder on the internet. True bipolar has fairly long periods of either mania or depression and cycles. Bipolar is more ongoing pervasive personality of poor coping skills and conflicted interpersonal interactions.
My advice is to realize there is probably nothing you can do to help them or change them other than altering the way YOU deal with THEM for the good of your own mental health!

Not sure why you needed the computer as I am assuming you already had a computer and the equipment? Most computers with fairly new Windows system would work okay. I personally feel the rental fee is kind of a bad idea in the long run at $48.00 a month. Sounds like you may need a phone line again unless you can get wireless. You'll have to talk to tech, I guess.
As far as learning and training, are you on DQS?

With any job anymore be it MT or something such as an engineer, there is no such thing anymore as job security. I myself am 27 having 7 years experience as an MT. I actually got started in MT after my first year of college as I wanted something part-time . . so much for that:) Do I moan and groan sometimes about work, sure, we all do either if you are an MT or not, but at this point in my career I am confident that if I do not feel that I am getting enough work to provide myself with a wonderful life and not just getting along that I can submit my resume with confidence that I will find something to suit my needs.
can you say what the comment was?
I think it was the comment
that you type fast that got everyone's goat. Being an MT is just not that simple and hardly something to just learn on the sly for some "extra money." By the way, most of us at-home MTs actually started out in the workforce and got enough experience to BE ABLE to work from home, not the other way around.
Thanks for the comment but this is...
exactly what I mean. It is like there are those in this field that think just because you can pick on an error "clarity" vs "clearity" it makes you better then the next. I will admit I am not the best speller or and expert in grammer but I am not DUMB and no one should be made to fell that way. Especially if I am looking to the QA for guidance.

Hayseed, Aren't you the gal who did 1700 lines in 6 hours or something like that? In that case, it's likely you wouldn't have any problem making their quota. But, how about that hourly rate? Will they be saving money by putting you on hourly, will you be making more money than when you were doing MT work? Ask for all the details in writing, would be my advice. Ask them to also state, in writing, if you can return to MT if you don't like QA. Congratulations and good luck!!

This is a good solution; it puts it in their face, so to speak. I've heard that people have to hear or see something an average of 3 times before it sinks in. If they receive no feedback, they think everything is okay or totally horrible, depending on their own point of view (this is for all people in all aspects of life; I suspect that doctors will just assume that everything is okay). If they receive negative feedback with a smile, they tend to believe that improvement is optional. A more dramatic, serious approach is necessary.

My situation may be a little bit different from yours, but you are not alone, and ER reports seems to be the main star.
I don't have any answers, but I'm kind of in the same boat with you. I have been working on an account that has all worktypes. I begin working very early in the morning, when I might be the only one working on this account. The ER reports supposedly have top priority, right after the stat reports. My problem is that lately I've noticed that once I complete all stat reports and am getting to the good stuff--the ER reports, whoever is managing the queue changes the priority of the more difficult OP reports and consultations, so that they float to the top of the queue, above the ER reports. This maneuver would sometimes make sense, but the account specs are such that the ER reports have top priority.
So, then, it takes several more hours to get to the ER reports, at which time there are so many workers on board that I end up getting 1 or 2 ER reports. I've lately gone from making over $22/hour to a mere $7/hr. I feel like I've been messed with, simply because I really got used to the account the way it used to be and now someone has come along and purposely made it more difficult for me. I have the option of signing off, changing my hours, or going elsewhere. I do have another interview pending after successfully completing the testing at another company. I know that the grass is not always greener, but there is a limit to what type of treatment that I will tolerate.
Comment
I agree with you.
This situation seems to be the end result of long years of MTs trying to do their best, while plugging along and accepting the treatment of the facilities, that filtered down to them through the MTSOs, who may or may not be addressing the issues of bad dictators with the facilities, for fear of losing the contracts. I believe, it is the job of those who have direct contact with the doctors (i.e., those at the facility in the HIM dept). According to what I have observed, they are not doing this job, and are either clueless, don't care, or enjoy this special power of oppressing the workforce from afar. It also seems that they are not required to properly train their dictating clinicians. Some of them are very active, however, in checking reports for proper comma use and such details, and do not hesitate to contact the MTSO to complain when the MT left out a comma, or failed to select the proper date of service on the header, failed to read the doc's mind and did not realize that when he/she coughed in a certain way, it was a clue that he/she wanted a copy sent to Dr. Joe Doe, etc. Of course, they actually do not pay for headers and footers and they do not provide the MT with enough information to fill in all the details on the header and footer.
I have an egg timer. I spend exactly 3 minutes trying to figure out a blank or the correct name for a doctor that requires a courtesy copy, etc. If I cannot accomplish this in 3 minutes, given the lists that I have been provided or internet resources, the report gets a blank and it is sent to the QA department to figure it out. Each report gets a grand total of 5 minutes for multiple look ups of blanks that are the fault of the dictator or due to me not having enough information to fill in headers, footers, consulting doctors, etc. If it is my fault because I do not know the terminology, and the word was dictated clearly, I will take more time researching. If the MTSO wants to address the issues of poor quality dictators/dictations with the facility, that is their choice.
If I were to have my own accounts, I would hope to have a deep pool to draw from so that I could include sanctions for such difficulties in my contract with the option of discontinuing service to those who proved to be so difficult. However, I do not wish to be a dreamer, and don't think such deep pools exist, at least not in my part of the country, so I haven't even tried this option of having my own accounts.
Comment
I"m not sure I understand your comment, and I am not here to debate, but the account that I work on has plenty of difficult dictators, as well as plenty of easier dictators, comparatively. My point was that you cannot depend on what type of report you will get at any given moment; there is no picking and choosing and the next in line might just change due to major shuffling. It is not predictable by worktype either. Whether there is plenty of work depends on how many MTs are working at the time, whatever jobs have been added to the pool, etc. There is often no work during third shift.
