Make him know. I think its a great idea to take back the work. I was in-house for a very small hospital for 5 yrs. MT dept was 2 FT, 2 PT. I live in a resort area so summers we got slammed and winters we did just about anything to pass the day. During the summer they refused to hire any more help for us, yet screamed that we were behind and the hospital was losing money, yada yada yada. Winters is when the ER kept us going. After several yrs of trying different things (all of which my bipolar dept head royally screwed up), they decided to outsource ER but keep inpatient stuff in-house. We kept voicing our concerns about our jobs and were continually told we were all fine, not to worry. Well, guess what... about a yr later they were so happy with outsource keeping up with everything (although some of the reports that came through were god-awful) and the hospital not behind in billing that they decided to eliminate one of the FT positions which was me because I had been there the least amount of time. It all comes down to the almighty $ which is really sad, forget about quality and people's lives. I agree most doctors don't know anything about the transcriptionists. All they know is they dictate the report and the report ends up in the chart when all is said and done. Unfortunately, they could care less what happens after they dictate, as long as the report is in the chart in the end. Maybe thats where we as MTs come in. Maybe we do have to make the doctor and the brick-and-mortar realize how important we really are as MTs. And yes, I said we are important, lets all give outselves a pat on the back for the challenging job we do. We have to somehow change their mindset from just saving $ to seeing how vital our services are to producing quality work. Let's stop complaining and making up every excuse in the book and blaming everybody else, and start being proactive in resolving this whole mess we're in.
