Check out this web site for a list of groups exempt from federal wage and hour laws: www.dol.gov/compliance/guide/minwage.htm . It does NOT include production workers as being exempt from these laws, if they are employees. IC status, of course, is totally different. Production workers are entitled to minimum wage, overtime, and paid training time if required by the employer. That is why large companies like MQ and Spheris require that you punch a time clock and pay you overtime, minimum wage, and training time. They are not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts! They are much too large to stay under the radar of the Dept of Labor, and there are big penalties to companies for violating these requirements.
