Not having standards hurts. Some work types just (sm)

don't add up line wise as quick as others. For me Ops are the best line count, consults and discharge summaries are killers.

Have a hospital I work for and they consistently change work types and do line counts. (sm)
Management just doesn't understand in order to crank out the work you need to be proficient by typing the same accounts. Go figure, they just don't get it ??
i used to work for a company that divided the work types up and i loved it. sm
there were only 4 of us working a major teaching hospital. someone was assigned surgery, different assigned discharges, different admits, etc. we all had the backup work type in case the original assignee wasn't available and were cross trained. it made us much more efficient, ability to get used to dictators, set macros, and in the long run we were all much happier.
Work types
Has anyone ever quit a position because you get work types you were assured you would not have to do?  I absolutely despise discharge summaries and was told upon hire that I would not have to do them, there were plenty of other reports I could do, now I get big chunks of DS throughout the day, I never have liked them, I lose about 75-100 lines/hour doing them.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I am not a newbie, I just do not like discharges and get a real mental block, I think mainly because I get so tired of sitting while the dictator is trying to figure out what to say.
Work types
Yes, they all have to get done but I used to work for a company that you were given a certain work type all day long, and it either rotated or if there was one person who liked ds or op, they were routed to them - the work got done, the MT had more production, thus the company benefitted also, why take an MT who can do 300+ lines on everything but DS and put them on DS when you have people who do 150 on everything, including DS
work types
Most won't allow that.. Especially the ones that pay well. The one I work for requires you to be skilled in all ares, even radiology.. It is a great job.. Have them for 20 years and 10 years in the MT department working from home. Hospitals are the way to go.
Realistically with all work types
and various dictators, I average about 17.5 minutes per hour at the end of the day.  But the first few hours I'm still working with my coffee buzz, so it is a little more, maye 22-25.  I get a lot of 10-15 minute reports with a lot of dead air time, then will get a 2-minute report that is two pages long.  I could never go by minutes unless it is the same thing over and over again.
Well, I have 25 years experience also in all work types
and only do acute care with a line rate of 10.5 cpl M-F and 11 cpl on the weekends.

You can negotiate it a little harder, and you will get it depending on their needs, I guess.

It is MDI-Maryland.
I've done all work types also and always find myself making more
doing radiology than any other work type.

I think it's mainly because it's more repetitive than the other work types.

With your three years experience, you should do fine jumping back into it.

Good luck.
all work types - 3000 lines a day @ 12 cpl 65 characters
18 cpl transcribed line - private hospital account. These are the only specifics I am willing to give.

Do not e-mail me and ask where or who - I will not reply!

I understand companies are paying 4 & 8 cpl edit/transcribed. I do not work for a company. I caught a hospital account using the platform at the right time and signed on quickly as an IC.

Hope this helps.
Poll: hardest and easiest work types. I enjoy...
orthopedics and psychiatry.  Do not like cardiology, oncology.
Unproductive work types continually, for me, DS with ESLs and residents. nm

I know it hurts, but it hurts a lot worse when you

don't have a million(s) dollar salary and you have children involved that will be emotionally damaged for life regardless.

I'm not bitter, he was abusive and I didn't like him anyway after a while. It was over 20 years ago, but my 2 kids (notice I said "my" and not "our") still have emotional issues after years of counseling.

Hey,  I learned how to make a can of "Spaghetti-O's" feed 3. And when the "father" had to start actually paying court ordered child support, he cut off ties with my kids.

Been with my second hubby for 13 years and he's a great guy. He gets the Father's Day cards.  If he cheats and I find out, he won't have a leg to stand on. Not because I'll take the chainsaw to him, but because I got wise years ago and everything is in MY NAME.

"As God is my witness, I will NEVER go hungry again!"

You really need to ask for standards,
examples, proof. Any company worth its salt should be able to provide you with standards for scoring and reports that have been scored, preferably against AAMT standards (sorry, anti-AAMT folks, but someone has to create standards). Better yet, post the name of the company and I'll bet they wake up and get a little more proactive!
Standards...
If you just name your "standard" report an abbrev, like Metropolitan Memorial Dr. Smith's Echo...MetroMemSmithEcho (I don't know if it's case sensitive or not) you should be able to make that work...if you try to "save" it as a "standard" it won't "keep."  I think you have to have certain "rights" in DEP to be able to create/modify a "standard."  Please let me know if this works!
standards not the same
If standards are exactly the same for working at home vs. going OUT to work, does that mean you dress the exact same way, only take one coffee break and half hour for lunch? Would you also be working in the evening like we do at home? I think not! One of the big advantages of working at home is that we can sit there in our comfy bathrobes, have a glass of wine, tie our kids' shoes, drop in a load of laundry, listen to a CD, watch TV, take time out to walk the dog. We are not in a public place like a laboratory or dry cleaners. We are in our own homes and entitled to do what we want as long as we are turning out work of good quality. OK, I feel better now. My wine glass is chillin in the freezer and the Chardonnay is about to be uncorked. Ciao ladies. And let's stop all the bickering. There are so many other really sad problems in the world!!!
do you get a lot of standards? That's
281 lines an hour. That's great. Yesterday I did 144 lines an hour. I don't get standards, have lousy dictators because I won't do ASR reports. You must have really good dictators and long reports. How do you do it?
Standards

It's definitely a good thing to have standards.  I'm addicted to Judge Judy and I'm amazed at how many women are taken in by free-loading men.  Far better to be lonely than to get hooked up with one of those.  OTOH if your standards are honesty, integrity and faithfulness, that's  good but if you start adding on must look a certain way, have a certain kind of job, no smoking and the list could go on forever, then the fact is:  There is probably no one out there for you.  So quit "looking," get out of the pity party (pity parties are VERY lonely)  and start moving.  Take yourself where other single people in your age group go and are likely to have interests similar to yours, with the objective of just enjoying life in general.  You may be surprised at the people you'll meet  who also have standards.

Oh and keep the standards/normals for themselves

Willow...re standards
There is a way to edit them once you have saved them but it is a major pain, you have to click on the entry with your mouse and then scroll through and click "modify" when you're done. But it is such a pain that I never do it that way with a long block of text because you can only see one line at a time. If I want to change something, let's say, a ROS template, I just go to a blank screen, type the short form to get the expansion, edit it from there, then block it and re-save it. Just remember to delete the one you don't want. Does that make sense? It's the quickest way I have found to modify something once you have already saved it. It could be much more efficient if they wanted to make it that way but oh well!!!
Privacy standards?
Who actually do you contact to report a breech of privacy standards in this business?  I probably should know this by now, but I don't.
Same here...lots of standards
x
Obviously they have much looser standards
In India and elsewhere. Our records should be kept onshore to protect our patients against myriad abuses. That is a no brainer.
Has anyone been able to transfer their normals/standards from
nm
do you get a lot of standards with your regular dictation?
I used to make $25 before going on DQS, now struggle to make $12 or so. Do you sit 3-1/4 hours straight? I can't do that, everything starts to hurt after about an hour.
Not quite. I wasn't referring to the standards

we can use with ctrl-S.  In the expander, isn't there a standard capability?  I think what I wanted to do was save a report using that.  The report did save, but then I wanted to edit it, because I really just wanted ROS and PE.  I was doing H&Ps and she kept (very wordy) saying the same thing over and over and over.  But once I saved it I wanted to edit out the parts I didn't need and I couldn't do it, didn't know how to do it.

Does that make sense to you?  With MTs or Legacy once you saved or created your normal you could edit it.  Is it possible?

Any help is much appreciated.  Sorry for any typos, it is so way past my bedtime!

Min QA standards - is there anyplace where these are published
I am wondering if there is some reference or expert source that holds a QA minimum standard. I understand the industry standard is 98% or better, but is this actually in print somewhere?
Test who decides the standards

Who decides what is correct and what is not or are you just talking about medical terminology?  As far as I am concerned the BOS is just bologna or baloney.  Who decides the standards?  I can understand medical terminology but to decide how to type a date -- October 21, 2006 or 10-21-06 or 10/21/06 because they think it is correct one way but your account wants the other -- are any of them really incorrect as long as you are consistent throughout the report.  I know that there are a lot of people that do not do a good job and I think that a medical terminology test would weed some of those out but as the Book of Style, I don't agree with that and never will.   I have more of a problem with people who want the money but do not want to work or do the work in the time frame given, have more sick days that work days, and could care less that it is your name that is out there. This occupation is not like an x-ray technician that gets a certification, there are not several ways to take the x-ray and a group of people decide which one is correct and which one is not.   I have received better work from an IC that has self taught herself and had me mentor than one that has a CMT behind her name.   Anyway my two cents worth for a beautiful Sunday afternoon here in Oregon.  Patti

There have to be guidelines and standards in place
for every profession, including MT. While I don't like the AAMT or agree with some of its new ways, there has to be something in place for all MTs to go by so they are all on the same page. The only way to bring real professionalism back to the field is by mandatory certification or a license to practice MT. There are way too many inexperiences terrible MTs out there ruining all of our reputations! And I for one am tired of it.
lines/hour standards (sm)

What would you say is the "industry standard" for line counts in an 8-hour work day?   Where do some of the companies want you to be?   150 lines per hour?  200 lines per hour?   More? Less?

Just curious since I've been out of the loop for a while.   Thanks.

If they really wanted to establish standards,
They would provide the book for free or at nominal cost so that all MTs had access and could get familiarized with it. Since not, I'd say they just want to make more $$.

There are some good folks who are trying to start an open source MT style guide. That's something I could get behind!

Rigid/Fickle QA standards
Would you please say which company did this?

I think it's somewhat standard practice at the nationals to allow up to a month of full QA for experienced MTs, and back in the day when I was a newbie (20+ years ago), I was on full listen for almost 90 days.

To expect you to digest ALL of that new information in one day is completely UNREASONABLE!!!! (yes, I just shouted the word UNREASONABLE!!!)
So sorry, I know how it hurts
nm
It hurts a bit - think of something else...
I have the ubiquitous shoulder tattoo (Pegasus) and I also have a custom design on the soft, inner part of my forearm. I like that one best because I can see the whole thing without getting into contortions. It has been touched up one time - the color red fades over time. Yeah, things change as you age, so what?

I got both after age 50 (over 10 years ago) and have never regretted it.
Never hurts to try!
I just got some the cover-your-whole-ear noise canceling headphones. They are Logitech and I got them at Staples for about 55.00. They are the best ones I have ever used. I got some stethoscope style ones not too long ago at Transcription Gear.com and they did not last more than a month. I did not even try to take them back though, I just hate returning things I buy on the internet.
Never hurts to ask. All they can do is say no!
nm
it hurts me too, but --sm
it would not necessarily be that way, the us vs them factor, if someone from either *side* had not criticised in the first place. It is what I call *defense mode*. what ever happened to the saying *if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?* Why can't we all just get along rather than starting a war over simple *words*? just a thought.
It never hurts to ask. nm

that hurts to look at
Please never clatch two numerals together like that for no other reason than it hurts the eyes.
isnt that funny? Even with industry standards, there are so many
x
By today's appallingly lax MT standards, I suppose a few -
:D MT as a profession is turning into such a JOKE, isn't it?
Retired or retarded? Anyone can retire if they set their life standards low enough
BUt if you think sitting on the couch pointing fingers at how bad the government is constitutes a wonderful successful life, good for you!

I'm not the one complaining about how bad things are, YOU are!

By the way, precious. I don't have to work, I want to, and am no longer an MT because I've gotten an education and moved on to a productive life with goals that stretch beyond the living room and the computer room.

Get over yourself. No one is impressed because your life certainly does not sound impressive in the least.

Most companies draw from the AAMT's standards and guidelines.
nm
cherrypicking hurts EVERYONE sm
you are supposed to be part of a team! Do you even know or care what that means?  As the other poster stated, SHAME ON YOU!
It never hurts to try. It's actually, I thought,
easy to learn and I really liked it. Although, bear in mind, it has a language all it's own but once you catch on, you will do fine. Give it a shot. You have other transcription experience so that would be a big plus as well.
Why Outsourcing Hurts Us

Interesting article!

America's Lost Hegemony
      By Paul Craig Roberts

The historian who chronicles America's decline will lay the blame on free market ideology.

I say this as a believer in the market. My books and scholarly articles demonstrate the superiority of market systems over government allocative schemes. The problem arises when market economics ceases to be thoughtful and becomes ideological or a dogma.

A good example of the latter is a recent Heritage Foundation study that argues that global outsourcing is the best way to equip the US military with the best technology at least expense. The study brushes away concerns with the erosion of the American manufacturing, science, and engineering knowledge base by asserting that such concerns imply protectionism and that protectionism means the death of innovation. ['Buy America' Provisions Don't Help Homeland Security or National Defense by Alane Kochems, June 21, 2005]

Protectionism can be problematical for innovation, and the study is correct to point this out. Where the study fails is in ignoring that innovation does not take place in a vacuum. Innovation requires a material base and depends on a strong manufacturing, science and engineering foundation backed by R&D programs.

In an interview with Manufacturing & Technology News (August 8), the study's project leader, Jack Spencer, sees protectionism as the only threat to American innovation, which he otherwise takes for granted:

"Our belief is that subjected to the free market, the United States is still going to produce most things because our comparative advantages are innovation and new technology. If liberated from protectionism, we can compete and that is where we will always emerge as winners." [Heritage Foundation Says Congress, DOD Should Learn To Live With Globalization; Providing Troops With Best Equipment Usurps Making It In America by Richard McCormack]

This belief is simply untrue. As this belief is the basis for the study, the study has done nothing but confirm a preordained belief.

The US has no God-given comparative advantage in innovation and new technology. We were leaders in these fields, because we were leaders in manufacturing.

We were leaders in manufacturing, because Europe and Japan destroyed themselves in wars, and the rest of the world destroyed themselves in various forms of socialism and cronyism.

America's hegemony in manufacturing, science and engineering was the product of historical circumstances. Moreover, it occurred despite American protectionism.

The historical circumstances have changed. The US gave away its scientific and engineering education and its agriculture. It did this partly for idealistic reasons and partly as cold war strategy.

Once socialism collapsed in Asia, US corporations began outsourcing abroad the manufacture of products for US markets. Success with offshore manufacturing has led to offshore outsourcing of research and development and now innovation itself.

As a recent report from the National Research Council recognizes, "product development and technical support follow manufacturing." One consequence for America is the loss of many manufacturing capabilities and "the increasing availability abroad of unique technologies not found in the United States."

This development is taking a huge toll on America's human resources in manufacturing skills, engineering and science. The first American victims were blue collar workers. Millions of them lost their jobs and experienced sharp declines in the quality of their lives. But as research, engineering, design, and innovation followed manufacturing abroad, now it is white collar workers in information technology and university graduates in engineering and physics who are being displaced.

American university enrollments in science and engineering are declining because there are no jobs for graduates. It is pointless to invest money, sweat and toil in an education that has no payoff. Markets do work. Markets are working to shrink the demand for, and supply of, American engineers and scientists.

The next impact is going to be on project manager jobs, practically the sole remaining source of career related employment for many engineers and technical people. Project management jobs require people experienced with the technology of the job. The loss of technical and engineering jobs empties the pipeline of people who have the experience to assume management positions. Far from being able to innovate, the US will even lack the human resources to manage technical and scientific projects.

Many uninformed people believe the problem is that America doesn't produce enough scientists and engineers. Manufacturing & Technology News reports that "a group of 15 US business organizations has launched a national campaign aimed at doubling within 10 years the number of bachelor's degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics."

What is the point of this when there is a huge supply of unemployed engineers and technical people who have been displaced by offshore outsourcing and by H-1b and L-1 work visas for foreigners? I know an American software engineer in his thirties whose job was outsourced. After searching fruitlessly for a job for four years, he took a job in Thailand writing software programs for $850 per month.

The anecdotal stories are legion. Yesterday, a friend reported to me that the service technician who repaired his garage door opener said his company was flooded with resumes from college graduates and engineers who cannot find work and are willing to take jobs installing garage doors.

US executives, with an eye to quarterly earnings and their bonuses, continue to spend considerable resources lobbying for increases in work visas that enable them to replace their American engineers, scientists, and technical people with lower cost foreigners. These executives lie through their teeth when they assert the lack of qualified Americans for the jobs. The fact of the matter is, the executives force their American employees to train their foreign replacements and then fire their American workers.

In a word, American capitalism is destroying itself by dismantling the ladders of upward mobility that have made large income inequalities acceptable. By rewarding themselves for destroying American jobs and manufacturing, engineering and scientific capabilities, US executives are sowing a whirlwind. American political stability will not survive the turning of an American university degree into a worthless sheet of paper. Libertarians and free market ideologues who rejoice in freedom should open their eyes to freedom's destruction.

Tailbone hurts
Need advice, my tailbone just started hurting about 2 months ago for no reason, have a Herman Miller Aeron chair that has been the best, but now need some relief for my tailbone. My rearend does not hurt, just my tailbone. Went on line and the good doughnut pillows are tailbone pillows are very expensive, anyone have any cheap home solutions?
i know that hurts but here are a few thoughts....
put the emphasis on your own mother, show them how a mother should be honored on that day (and always) and throw a huge party for your own mother next year.  3 siblings and I did that yesterday (which was also my mom's birthday) and the fact that my two grown children came and brought me little gifts as well was just frosting on the cake, and that had not happened for many many years!  Try not to hold the hurt in and just resolve to show them you love them "just because" next time you see them!
It never hurts to include her even if she
doesn't come.  It is about not having regrets.  If you know that you always made an effort ...then in the end you will have peace about it.
Truth always hurts...
Hostility saying did not think a nurse should have some kind of background in transcribing??? That would be like my not having to have study in order to be a nurse. Stand by what I said in the first place, and you are the one talking about being "seasoned" as if 18 years made an authority. I never brought up my life, career or anything else in my post. Like I said, not anything ugly in my first post and stand behind what I said, a nurse still needs more than an RN license to transcribe. Oh, hey my husband drives an 18 wheeler. I also drive- does that mean I can drive one of those??? Double duh....
