I have been steadily cutting living expenses and readjusting my expectations. With driving, I do less of it and since "going town" is a 70 mile round trip, I try to keep it to twice a month unless there is something urgent, like for keyboards yesterday. My gasoline budget is $200 and has been that for 2 years. I have yet to use that much in a month. I walk my in very small town rather than drive, but that is a longstanding habit because my job is so sedentary.

My new pet peeve is food. I had not seen rising prices until the last month, or at least I had not felt it. Since the big grocery stores are "in town" I don't do so much of that. I have moved to frozen vegetables because they keep longer. We have a small grocery store here and while their prices are high, it is still cheaper than driving and I can walk to and from.

Mostly, the pinch I am feeling is in my free time. I have gone from being just an employee with one job to being an employee and holding 2 IC contracts besides. I worry about money and I worry about money and I worry about money!!!! I have been so broke I couldn't eat, but every other day and I refuse to go back to that. I'd rather work and scrimp and save and do without anything besides the necessities. Hey, I am not going hungry.

I honestly do not know what I would do if my kids were not grown, if I had rent or a mortgage, or a car payment, or credit card debt. I don't know how people can do those things and I know most of you are and I feel for you. I long ago determined to live below my means and make financial decisions below my means. Over time, it has paid off and I have more means, but living carefully is now a way of life.
