I just fixed my friend's computer. She had about 20 viruses and trojan horses, not to mention over 300 Spyware entries. It took me about 6 hours to get it back to proper working order. The only thing she had was Limewire.

I have had WAY too many viruses come from limewire. sm.
Be very careful about music and video sharing and downloading through them. I tried them about a year ago and nearly every song downloaded had poor quality of wasn't the correct song. The first worm I got was not that bad, but then I got an actual virus. Had to totally wipe my computer. I was NOT happy.

I've never had any trouble with Limewire...
They automatically check for viruses when U download each song plus they don't have spyware, unlike Morpheus (stay away from that one). In fact, last night I downloaded Let It Be (the movie) which I have never seen before (can U imagine that, me being a Beatle freak?) and have all kinds of videos and songs and albums. I believe Limewire is recommended by PC Magazine and PC World too. I love it!
There is a website called Limewire.
Mostly it's used to share and download music for free, but you can also find software on there as well. You have to first download the Limewire software which is a free download. The you open up Limewire, get used to the software which is very easy, and then do a search. That is how I got my copy of MS Office 2003.
The Limewire software will ask you each time you use it if you want to upgrade to Limewire Pro, just click later to continue using the free version.
I know some will yell about it not being right because of copyright laws and such, but in my opinion, Microsoft charges exorbitant prices for their bug-ridden operating system and software, I don't have much guilt about it.

However, if you do any research, you'll find that switching to Firefox drastically reduces your exposure to viruses. Additionally, plug-ins for Firefox further increase protection against some viruses, such as those that come through Active-X. The e-mail program you use as well as common sense of not opening attachments from people you don't know also help.

Plus, you need to beware. Stedmans is not free, you have to pay no matter what version you get.

Yes, and I swear I've gotten viruses
from tech support screwing around. I now have a new one, and no, I will never work on platform again or have anyone be on my computer through a meeting. If it's not FTP work using Word, no way will I let a company mess around.

none of them are that Internet savvy. Oh, a popup that says it's going to protect my computer. Let's click on it! Oh, no! A virus and spyware.
I'm not risking losing my files, compromising the security of my documents, or spending valuable time cleaning up their messes. I bought myself a new computer so they get the old one now.
How many of you that use computers know how to do updates, repairs, clean up viruses, etc?
Just because I work every day using a computer, my husband has said tonight he thinks I should go to a computer class because I spent out $150 today for a person to come and get rid of several viruses on my computer. I asked my husband if he were so interested in this, why didnt he go to computer class and learn himself. I said I was coming on MTstars and just see how many of us transcriptionists also do our own repairs. Ok, MTers, now is your time to speak up!

I wish I knew enough to help. My daughter had viruses totally shut her computer down
but hers did let me at least reinstall XP. I had a disc lying around from some of my old computers and it worked fine on it. The downside is that obviously when I reinstalled she lost all of her saved files, picture etc..but she had a working computer and that is all she cared about without having to replace the hard drive. I honestly wish I could help but I am not sure there is any way to transfer or recover what is on your computer if it will not even read a CD to burn to or a USB flash drive. Have you checked out the forums at Dell.com. I went to the troubleshooting area and it lead me to a tech support forum where I could enter in the error message and it told me what I could do to fix the problems and it did work. If nothing else, I would try to take it to a computer shop to have them assess it and let you know what is or is not salvageable. Good luck. I feel you pain.

I will sincerely be thinking of you and how your making out with your dysfunctional family I would invite you to mine but it may not be much better but I am bound and determined to make it great because I have 3 new little foster kids that need a happy memory of Christmas, so were heading to KY to enjoy Christmas, let them be kids with the grandkids and start a new year and new life off hopefully. They;ll be spoiled with love and that's what Christmas is all about.

I didn't read the posts, but I read the after-posts and I think he should come back under his own name, no matter what. This board is a lifesaver to me and I acknowledge all that is positive. I think anyone who is "bullied" on this board has to come back and reap the benefits of those of us who are "true professionals," we don't judge. The policies against disagreement - not talking about "trolling" here but honest and courteous disagreement - were stifling here. I am so delighted to find the instigators of automatic post banning gone - it is about time. I really hope that the new owners will not follow the same unfair and unreasonable (and sometimes very personal)patterns. I know exactly who you mean, too, RadGuy, when you mention the two who really drove this board into the ground - no decent administrator would have allowed this, not to mention participated in it wholeheartedly. And, if Admin needs any clues about who NOT to put in a position of responsibility around here, due to past bad behavior and unacceptable treatment of other responsible MTs, I'd say be very wary of those champing at the bit to "ban trolls" - these are the few who didn't exert influence on the prior administrator/moderator to ban trolls, but conspired to ban anybody they personally didn't like, regardless of how responsible the banned MTs were in following the rules of the site. I saw this happen many times over the years, and we lost a lot of lively and intelligent input on this site because of it. I guess we will have to wait to see how fair and equitable the new policies will be, but it's encouraging to know there is at least a chance now that everyone who behaves will be able to participate, instead of just the approved few.

Did you know it costs these companies about $1 to manufacture a CD yet they charge $15 and more? Sorry, I refuse to ever again pay for my music!
