the USB port on the front of my computer since they were easier to get to than the ones on the back. I have never heard of any where you plug your keyboard into the footpedal.

Oh, they did for me! I just recently plugged my
instead of my junky speakers, and what a difference!!! Can't believe I've gone this long thinking that it was DQS that was all the problem with the degradation in sound quality since going from using a C-phone.
I assume that better speakers would have to make a difference, because mine are super cheap. But for now I'm just staying with my headphones through the computer speaker plug (and with a Turtle Beach Audio Device as well now).
My C-phone is plugged into my router.
You have to have a VoIP router in order for that to work. You can get one at WM or any office supply store. Good luck.
I don't think you have to configure anything. I always am plugged into tower, but can do either.

I let it dry overnight and plugged it in this morning
and it made crazy noises. I took what I felt comfortable apart and used a blow dryer, but none of the buttons work. It has a dial tone and the face looks normal, but no buttons at all work.
I am in Houston too.
I am so careful with that thing, but my daughter got hurt really bad when she fell on her arm. I was trying to get her to move her arm to make sure it wasn't broken and she started kicking. She hit my glass of water and some got in it before I could catch it.

Reboot without the headset plugged in.
Then plug the headset in. Give it some time to find the headset. If this doesn't work, try checking the Device Manager. In XP it's Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers. Click on the plus sign and see if anything is "crossed out" in that list. First try to right click and check the Properties. If it is not working proerly try the Troubleshoot button. Click on the Driver tab and update the driver. If neither of these work, go back to the Device Manager, right click on the USB port in question and Scan for Hardware changes. If none of these work , uninstall the driver. Remove the headset from the USB port and then plug it back in and see if the computer can now find it and install the driver.
If you're plugging the headset in and unplugging it without removing without the "safely remove hardware" icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen, you are disabling the USB port until the computer is restarted again. Always use the hardware removal tool!
Sounds like you have your headset plugged
into the wrong hole. As far as the foot pedal you need to calibrate it. Open Express Scribe and go to settings and under settings there is pedal and hot keys. Open that and then follow the directions for calibration. That should work and if it doesn't maybe your foot pedal isn't compatible with Express Scribe.

Most of the time my laptop is plugged in. Sometimes I unplug it to play games in bed or if we are having a storm.
I wondered about purchasing a battery back up in addition, even if you can do that with a laptop that already has a battery built in, which I don't know. :) This is my first laptop and I have only had it for about two months.

I have a coworker who does not have an earphone plug-in on her speakers but she does on her tower. Does anyone know how to configure this to be able to hear through her earphones when plugged into the tower? Thank you in advance.
Cable will not work if your modem has to be plugged in.
When I had cable internet, it did not work during a power outage because the cable modem had to be plugged in, so no power meant no internet. Now I have wireless broadband that does not require power and I just keep my laptop always charged up. So if we lose power, I can easily just switch over to my laptop without losing too much time.
DECONGESTANTS. Your Eustachian tubes are plugged by drainage or
by swelling, and you could get a REAL nasty earache if you can't get the swelling down and the nose/sinuses drained. Lots of HOT fluids to make the drainage thinner. Chicken soup. Tea. (Rum and coke?) just kidding, that would hurt.

and your foot pedal has a phone line plug too? Thats odd, cuz normally it would be a USB plug. but yes, you can by an outlet to install, i had to do the same thing a long time ago on a different computer. it was called something like an eathernet adapter....you should be able to take the foot pedal to radio shack adn they will give you exactly what you need.

A wave pedal is a foot pedal that connects to either
serial port, game port, or USB depending on the software needed with it. You have to download the work via the internet and most companies still require high-speed internet, though some allow dial-up or satellite. A pedal costs about $70, though can find on e-bay cheaper. You can download ExpressScribe for free to use with the foot pedal unless the company requires a different software program.

It will depend on how much experience you have and how well you are doing with the work. My first company kept me on QA for 6 weeks, although they typically kept new MTs on QA for the first 12. My second company kept me on QA for 2 days, and for my current company I sent 3 reports through QA and then was released.

work anywhere where I had to pay to use their software. Keep looking, there are good jobs out there.

If 4 cpl is the VR rate, then you are getting paid, but if they had stated a certain number of hours or days for training pay, then you should receive that amount specified as training pay. If they simply said you're paid for training, that could very well mean that you will be paid your training rate for your 1.5 hours of training. What company is it?

I don't think brand of foot pedal is important, but need to know if it is game port, serial port, or USB and how many pins it has. The majority of them are made by Infinity in some foreign country, but sold by many companies.

A wav pedal is just a generic term for a pedal used to
play voice files you have on your computer. You can get them on the equipment board here, e-bay, or you can Google and get lots of other places. Some pedals are fairly generic and can play multiple "wav" types, but some only work with certain software. You can have a serial port connection, a game port connection, or a USB connection.
If you do not already have a job that you need a pedal for I'd suggest waiting because you don't know which kind you will use. If you need it for testing you can download ExpressScribe for free and use the function keys to test.

I've used one that was a fee download, I think it was called Bytescribe or somethingl ike that. Does that work for most all files or should I look into purchasing something like Start/Stop or GearPlayer?
Oh and does anyone know where I can get Microsoft Word or Office Suite for a reasonable (I'd say cheap, but cheap usually means bootleg) price?
Sorry to ask so many questions, but it's been a while since I've worked for a national. Before the hopsital job I'm being laid off from, I worked in the office at a hospital. So I've been out of the loop so to speak.

That's kind of standard, isn't it? I mean (SM)
every hospital and every MT company I've ever worked for, to be a full-time employee you had to account for 40 hours a week, either by working it, or taking PTO, unless you were covered under FMLA.
I think sometimes we expect even more flexibility working from home and forget the fact that working from home IS flexibility -- not having to go into the office, being in the comfort of our home (if we want our children or family around us, that is our option--not so in an office), etc.
The 40-hour expectation is very standard, in my experience. You have PTO to use for when you cannot make up your absence. My guess is they will offer more PTO with this new plan coming up.
Try not to panic or be upset. No one knows what the new plan will be. We will each have to decide if the new plan is what we need or not. If it isn't, thank goodness there are other companies to work for out there.
Please try to relax.

Double standard
So we expect MDs to always have their complete attention on every word out of their mouths, which would be nice, but some of them put in 70 or more hours a week at the office/hospital, and have mountains of dictation to complete each week. But we expect them to never make a misspeak, even though on these boards we have a heart attack if one poster points out another poster's spelling or grammar error. Never mind that we are supposed to be better at English than the MDs, but we don't have to use our skills in writing posts (which is MUCH easier to do well than never making a misspeak), even if the post has to do with getting a job. That's quite a double standard, if you ask me.

Tried to post this on Wednesday, will try again...I need to know what is the industry standard conversion for minutes dictated to minutes typed? Not how much do you do - but what is average for one hour dictation - how many hours typed. Bosses think we're taking too long but we do not get automatic demographics and need to look on log sheets (if they arrive and if they're correct) for everything from patient name to referring doctors, addresses, patient #'s, etc. So I need to give him an "average" number of hours dictated equal "X" amount of hours typed taking into consideration the lack of information, the searching we must do and the various typing speeds. I'm not going to "judge" anyone's advice - just need some input from those that have been there. Thanks for sharing.
AAMT is only the standard on
That account would be the one I type online. The other accounts, that are much more profitable than the typing I do online could give a rat's crap whether I'm certified. They think I'm great, and they pay me for it. No QA (don't need it), and my TAT is great. I'm very reliable, accountable, and have a lot of social grace. Not a machine here.... typing out those lines for the almight online MTSO's. Just type for one, and thank goodness they are fair, and I don't feel like I'm "doin' time". I get raises, and they don't hassle me all day through IM or nitpicky QA issues. Spent 1-3 days in QA when I first started, and now whatever they give me, I type, and do not require QA. 
There is a standard scale!
I know this is an old post, but I just ran across it. There absolutely is a standard scale. The AAMT website has it under an article titled Metrics for Measuring Quality in Medical Transcription (2005). I wish I could give you the exact page, but I only have the .pdf of that article - but it was only downloaded last week, so it'll still be there. 
That's not a standard description, so
you can only be sure by asking the person who used it.

What is the industry standard for VR pay? Specifically for someone just starting out.

who would that be? When can we start? Who wants to help? What about a committe appointed and administered through a university with Merriam-Webster, Stedmans, NIH, etc. on the committee. I once met the man (on the phone) who started Sno-Med. Wish I could find his phone number. Maybe he could help us all. All this middle-man stuff and uncertainty has to stop. Thanks for your post.

The old standard used to be three times the sm
length of the dictation is the typing time so 30 minutes would be 90 minutes. I'm not sure with Expander programs on one end and then horrible ESL and sometimes horrible audio - what the "standard" is now - I definitely struggle with it though :)

Do you have other things to count such as mortgage interest, etc? If you don't, then yes, your standard deduction would be the better deal.
I just finished a personal income tax preparation class in my accounting program in college. I always thought I was doing something with those deductions too until I took this class. Went back and looked at my old returns and lo and behold, always just took the standard deduction.
Personally, I am just upset that I took so much time keeping up with all those receipts and so forth!!!
I have a two way adapter that is plugged into the phone line. One goes from the adapter into the
router provided by the DSL company and the other goes from the adapter directly into the phone that I have connected. The phone needs to be connected so I can re-record (which still works for me thankfully). I was wondering if I unplug the phone line and plug that into the back of my computer if that would work but then I would have to have work call before faxing and change the hookup after which would be a royal pain. If you can give me another way to hook this up it would make my life so much easier. Thanks.
