You also couldn't afford a breakdown - sm plz
I am a walking burnout factory... it is so necessary to not be the "yes girl"... take a break at least ONE holiday, ONE weekend and spend it on YOU... You cannot afford a mental meltdown, which will happen at this rate. Take care of you, and the job will continue to flow... everyone needs a break.... as short as it may be, it can still be refreshing if you use a day wisely... just my opinion
You can get it by COBRA, that is what they told me, couldn't afford it. nm

The REAL credential was the ART a few years back
WE had to have knowledge to get it. Not just show that we could transcribe. We had A&P with the premed students. We HAD to learn the stuff.
I couldn't agree more. Lost my mom 13 years ago sm
this coming August. I miss her the most on Mother's Day.
We couldn't keep up interest & attendance to keep the chapter going. This was years ago. nm
s
I've used my laptop to MT for about 5 years, full-time. Couldn't
I love being portable, plus I have a small working space. It's great transcribing on the deck (or at the beach) on nice days. Have never had any technical issues; there's always some sort of adapter thingie that's available for whatever comes up.
#5 by the skin of my teeth and with more hours than it took 5 years ago.
I quit within 24 hours and again after 8 weeks in my nearly 25 years in the biz (nm)
dd
Quit after 2 years. If I wanted to work 8 hours a day, I would have stayed in the hospital. Seemed
to be working all day long just to make a decent living. Although, I wanted to be home with my kids until the baby was at least 5, had to breakdown and return to working outside the home, to make ends meet. Just to stressfull trying to make a good living with the rates they are paying now.
I have 17 years acute care experience and don't make 1200 lines in 6 hours. sm
I work for a company that is VERY picky about their work, 100% QA everything. I have been with them over a year, and have to go back and listen to my work a second time while proofing. I only make 160-170 lines an hour, but the pay is good for that, and I have learned so much in the year that I can go to work anywhere without problems. For me it is worth the extra time to put in the few extra hours a week to have really top QA. There is room for all types in this business, the really fast ones, and the slower ones who work differently, you just have to find your place. Ideally, we should all type 200 lines an hour and have 99%+ QA, but I don't thank too many of us make it. Good luck to you.
It's not even a credential.
It stands for "Fellow of the American Association of Medical Transcription". With the way AAMT is now, I surely wouldn't want this behind my name.
CMT credential
I've been doing transcription now for 20+ years. While I once had the CMT status, it was never recognized anywhere I worked, so I let it lapse. Having said that, however, since we don't know what the future might bring, it would probably be worth it to keep it up just in case, who knows, SOMEDAY someone might actually pay you more for the credential. Good Luck.
CMT Credential
I am trying to locate all mt's who have obtained their CMT Credential through The National Heathcareer Association.
I completed a medical transcription course at Techskills located in Brookfield Wisconsin. I also passed the Certified Medical Transcription exam which was taken at the Techskills location; administered through The National Healthcareer Association.
I was informed by 48 out of 54 potential employers that the CMT Credential that I thought I earned was false, counterfeit, and not worth the paper it was printed on. I was also informed that Techskills curriculum and the CMT Credential through The NHA are not recognized in the healthcare industry.
I was informed that the only place to obtain the CMT Credential is through The AHDI and only after you have two years of acute care under your belt.
I am forming a class action lawsuit against The NHA and Techskiils. I have located other students who experienced that same deceptive practices and had no idea who to call or where to submit a complaint. They are saddled with student loans in excess of $7,0000 and have no way to pay for them because they cannot get that medical transcription job that they were promised. If you or you know of someone who attained their CMT through The NHA or went to Techskills, please email me asap ****.
What credential is FAAMT? sm
Where I work there's someone who likes to sign her emails with
RN, CMT, FAAMT
It's kind of laughable. Should we all start writing our degrees and education behind our names?
No education? Feel free to give yourself an abbreviated title.
ASMS (Associate of Science in Medical Secretarial--I tried it without the medical first, but it didn't look so nice behind my name).
Anybody else think this is all a bit silly in our field?
How valuable is the RMT credential to employers?
x
My pay went up 1 cent a line when I obtained my CMT credential.
x 26 pay periods a year. Nothing to sneeze at and definitely worth the effort.
Exactly! Set up testing, issue a credential, represent the American MT. I love it! nm

For us slow pkes---my best would be 3 hours, worst 6 hours - just depends on the dictator ,
I have to look up (i.e. Dr. names, addresses)...I have to do a lot of that and it majorly slows me down, without all that and good not too horrible dicators, in 1 hour I can do anywhere from 15-20 minutes of dictation.
But in transcription, if you are good at what you do, you can do 8 hours of work in 4 hours. So eit
you slice it, both companies will still get 8 hours worth of work out of you.
That is the problem I've been having lately being an MT. Companies want to pay us on production and they set minimum productivity standards, but want us timed in for 8 hours a day. My thinking is, if they want 8 hours of work out of me, pay me hourly with production incentive. If they want to pay me on production and tell how much I have to produce in an 8 hour period, then when I hit that mark, I should be able to call it a day even if I've only worked 4 hours.
Seems these companies want it both ways and it is simply not fair to us MTs. JMO, tho.
No, she didnt but so what if she did?
She was self supporting. She didnt take anything from anyone or go on the system.
i didnt see that.
what was the report?
How do you know that she didnt get ....
the newest edition out used??? I agree with it being worthless after a while but you can get used books that are the newest editions.
She didnt say they
were paying production. Probably an hourly rate position. Wipe off the drool. they ain't no fool.
That didnt work out right! Sorry.. NM

Didnt Seem Rude
You didnt seem rude to me at all. You adressed exactly what I was looking to get more info about. Should I even invest in the training, and if so what was the best way to go? Was MT even something I should get into? Sounds like more bang than I want to get tied up in so I appreciate your reply! Thanks!!
DH now knows reality of my job, didnt at first.
x
If it's my fav doc with lots of shortcuts, 1-1/2 hours to 2 hours max
x
I see, we sit at the keyboard for 40 hours and then throw on 20 more hours
Is this how you do it? Me? I got a PT job so that if my FT job didn't have enough work to meet my needs financially, the two jobs together would.
They hired me to work a specific shift and that is what I am working. If they want me to type after I clock out, then I will happily do so.
I must say, I work long hours, sometimes 12-14 hours a day.
I thought it was important to mention that. However many hours it takes to get the work done is what I do. Some days 12 hours, other days 6 hours and sometimes 14 hours. So, I guess there really is no easy answer.
I do 2000 lines in 6 hours - so maybe 3 hours - nm
x
typing 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week
is TOUGH.
on my wrists I mean.
and not getting any benefits... and for a salary of less than 30K? not really worth it...
Why didnt your ancestors stay?
Why didnt your ancestors stay wherever they came from? What a horrible statement. We are all descendant from another country, unless we are American Indian. I know two doctors who live here and do help in their home countries. One from South Africa, the other from Mexico. One goes back each year to hold clinics where they operate on children.
Nixon didnt declare war
Lyndon Johnson stepped up the fighting in Vietnam, we were there back in the 1960's. Pressure was put on Nixon from the courageous and so right protestors to end our participation in a wrong war a war we were in because we didnt want the South Vietnamese to become communist, which happened anyway. The protests at Kent State were peaceful except some students started throwing rocks at inexperienced guardsmen. The guardsmen were called before the protest to keep calm on campus, which is something that should never be done and was never done before. You do not turn military against student protestors. You do not use military to guard Americans, that is what police are for. Only during Martial Law can you have military take over American streets. We have a right to protest. When the students saw the guardsmen, some threw rocks. The guardsmen then shot their guns. Trust me, this is how it went. It is burned into my psyche.
Thank you. I didnt know if there were a lot of parts to assemble.
:
Didn't have to do much of that (didnt really mind that
part of the job, though). Just didn't like working 11-7, hated the fact that with being responsible for so many patients, I felt like I wasn't giving any of them very good care.
wonder why my email didnt work??
That makes me wonder, I have been getting emails lately, it should be working.
Vets were I worked didnt want to pay for MT. Had

Didnt know we have our own country now of Georgia!
I love my country(and state).
Wish I could afford...
...to do that! I am SO SO SICK OF MQ!!! They are driving me crazy! I am on my 3rd MT Supervisor in three months and still have not heard one word from the latest one. They just don't care about us at all. I understand that's the nature of the biz, but my God, would it kill you just to drop an email and introduce yourself???
Wish I could afford...
my TC? sorry, what's that?
If you can afford it, go for it. sm
Just remember, if you work as an IC you may have a "nonconforming" loan which may give you a little higher interest rate. If you can document your income with pay stubs and W2s as well as income tax forms, you may be "conforming" and be able to get the lowest interest rate possible.
If your credit scores are high enough, you can always do 100% finance with an 80/20 loan which will eliminate PMI monthly payment. Your credit scores need to be 685 or higher for 100% finance.
Shop around for the best interest rate, but DO NOT let everyone pull your credit. Have one loan officer pull your credit report and ask him what your scores are. When you shop to the next loan officer, tell them do not pull your credit report, but here are my scores. Just give them your scores and ask what is the best interest rate they can give you. The more people who pull your credit report, the lower the score goes. It drops 2 or 3 points each time it is pulled by mortgage loan officers.
Also, you can buy down to a lower rate. So, if they quote you 5.75%, you can buy that down probably to 5.3% for 0.375% of the total mortgage you are borrowing (which in reality is 0.375 of 1 point).
I hope this advice helps - good luck. I say go for it! No better feeling than to own your own home.
I bought a new house last year and we just refinanced and closed on Friday. That is why all of this information is so fresh in my mind. Also, my sister is a mortgage loan officer, so she helped me a lot and explained how things work.
Always ask what your closing costs will be - different mortgage brokers charge differently. One may be $4000 and another may be $8000. That is a huge difference. Some want more profit, others are reasonable.
Best of luck to you.
Here is the best if you can afford it.

Which can you afford more?
The emergency room bill....or the loss of your DH?
I'm not trying to be harsh, but money concerns should not keep you from getting medical help when it is needed and warranted.
It really sounds like some kind of allergic reaction. But it may also be something harmless. I agree with the other poster about calling your MD. You cannot fool around with stuff like this.
Me too! I can't afford NOT to be an MT!
Can't afford not to
I don't know how you've figured all this out. I have spent HOURS researching all this becuase when I started with learning MT, I barely knew how to turn a computer on, so I was completely in the dark. The only thing I've been able to conclude for sure is that you will pretty much get different information every time you go to a different site. I have tried soooo many different things and to be honest, I really haven't found any one thing to be much better than another, even the things I've started paying for.
I will definitly make a block of time very soon (tomorrow?) and try your group of programs and ideas and hopefully it will help.
Sure do appreciate all your time and thought into your post(s), btw.
Whether you can afford or not SM
you are going to have to see an accountant and/or a lawyer. We cannot teach you how to be an IC or how to set up a company. That is a job for a professional and I would never give advice on either (or take advice) on a message board.
unfortunately I can't afford $99 fee
