No, I am not contradicting myself

Working with kids in the house and keeping an MT service that you run on a part time basis as the manager are two totally different things.

I stop typing when I am interrupted too.  Still causes a distraction/mistakes at the point just before you stop.  I think you must work at home with your kids and that's why you are defending it.  Is it possible?  Yes.  Is it possible to work at home with kids and give each the attention required?  No.  If you are truthful, the answer is NO.  It's very unprofessional.  I worked in an MT department of a hospital for many years before starting my own service.  Do you think we were allowed to bring our kids to work?  Of course not.

I think you are contradicting yourself.

You say get away from "stay home with the kids" but in your final paragraph you state "keep it as a gig on the side" as if it is the equivalent to making homemade quilts that you can make some cash at to sell on e-bay or at a craft fair.

I usually stop typing if someone interrupts, and I'm used to that flexibility.  I also can say it was far worse at the hospital with the interruptions.  I was asked to do other duties every day.  Not only was there background noise on the recording but there was background noise all around me since I didn't have an office but was smack in the middle of a tech area where there was lots of clammering going on.  So, I guess the kids are mild compared to all that mayhem.  Mine are school age now, but I started when my oldest was 2 working at home.

The other MT and I were going to hang a sign that said "complaint department" since we were right outside of the bosses' office and everyone who came along decided it was a good idea to tell us their problem first while waiting to get in the door to tell the boss.  Others would come and slam the drawers in our "little cubby of a hole that was probably 4 x 6 foot for the 2 of us" and throw stuff on our desks or ask silly questions like "have you seen suzy or johnny?"  I guess adding "information booth" would have been another sign to use.

If for one minute that someone thinks you are not interrupted in an office setting, then they are wrong.  It's worse!!!!!!!!!!
