You sound like my kind of person. IMHO, the thing most missing in our industry today is kindness. I think that this largely comes from our working with machines all day rather than people. My Lanier, my computer, my iPod and my BlackBerry never demand any interaction, so it is sometimes easy to forget what life was like as a newbie. I, too, was mentored too many years ago to count (I am a grandma in my 60s) by a kind and wonderful woman who had no reason to take me under her wing, but she did. Isn't it sad that all of these wonderful mentoring women have faded away and been replaced by big corporations, some of them ones that cheat people on line counts and most of which exploit their workers? I try to tell newbies my perception of MTing, but with kindness. I honestly do not feel that this profession will survive. My young niece (married and pregnant with her second child) wanted to get into MTing and I discouraged her vehemently. She became an emergency medical technician instead, although she is going to be an at-home mom until the children are older. I just feel so sorry for the newbies. I am also honest in telling people not to invest time and hopes in this profession. It is on life support. I work for the finest, most honest company in the world and I love it; however the general atmosphere of the overall MT world is changing--and for the worse. Every day I give thanks that I only have two more years until retirement. Anyhow, thank you for your reminder. It is timely and needed. I have sympathy for the newbies and only hope that most of them are young enough to train for a new profession. The golden age of MTing is over.

I have the same experience, till now. Therefore, in MHO, as long as VR gives such a poor performance, it would be fair to pay the
s a m e rate for straight transcription and VR transcription. Some MTs just
say...'Oh, no!' when a printed document drops down instead of a blank page.
Not always, but mostly.
When the VR system gets better and does not need so much corrections anymore, then the line payment for VR should be lowered compared to straight transcription.
But only then, because right now VR-editing (hyphen or no hyphen?)is in no way easier than straight transcription.
