Hello, I use this new book I got and love it. Radiology Imaging Words and Phrases Second Edition by Health Professions Institute. It is newer than the Stedman's (it is 1995 edition) so it has the newer terms it may not have. This one came out this year, a month or two ago. I just got it a few weeks ago. It is 750 pages and is 36.00. I am totally glad I bought it.

It's pretty much all I've ever done, although I did work at a medical school for a while and typed research papers and such. BORRRIIINNNNG!
I like radiology because it spans almost every field (except maybe psychology LOL). No matter what part of the body it is, when you want to find out what's wrong, you send them to x-ray.
Question regarding Radiology Imaging Training
Hi Everyone. I am an acute-care MT and have 30 years exp. I am wanting to expand my field on typing Imaging reports as there are quite a few jobs in my area that pay hourly salary for this. I used to have a hospital hourly salary until they outsourced. There are 2 hospitals in my area that need Imaging MT. I actually have typed some imaging reports that are thrown into our pool as I took a position with the outsource company that our hospital contracted too but I do not like working by line with no spaces being counted. Makes it hard to make decent money for years of exp. These two hospitals do have Imaging positions open and they pay by hour. I was wondering what schools would have courses that I could take via commute to learn Radiology/Imaging. My friend that I used to work with got back into doing radiology reports and now gets paid by the hour again. Myself and one other ex-coworker have applied for an additional position open in Imaging but we have not even had a call. I am quick to learn and have Radiology books, but I would not feel that comfortable in going these reports until I had some additional schooling. There are a few schools in my area that have transcription, but I do not need the whole course. I listened to a report for my friend one day and I understood every word the doctor said. I know I could do it with time, but evidently my resume is lacking in this department and really no hospital will give you a chance unless you have that experience in this Imaging field. These days there is not many places that will give you a chance on the job training unless you have been to school. They just do not have the time with the busy pace these days. Any info would be helpful. Even if I did the extra shooling there is no chance they would call. These positions are for home MT and I have been a home MT now for 20 of those 30 years and I have worked from all over the country. Any information would be helpful for checking into. Thanks
Radiology is getting hit big time. Stand alone imaging centers especially.
Radiologists and lawyers usually mix about as well as oil and water. But radiology's near-term future could depend on the efforts of an Alabama attorney who is fighting a one-man battle to overturn legislation that could devastate the independent imaging center industry.
Jim Zeigler is an elder care attorney and self-described Republican activist who has taken issue with the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) of 2005, legislation enacted earlier this year that makes cuts to a wide range of federal government services. In radiology, the legislation specifically cuts $2.8 billion in Medicare payments for imaging services conducted in out-of-hospital settings.
Mr. Zeigler's beef is with the changes the DRA has made to the way Medicaid calculates how people can qualify for federal nursing home assistance. He might be just another gadfly if it weren't for one fatal flaw in the legislation -- a key difference in the versions of the bills passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives wasn't properly reconciled, as required by the U.S. Constitution.

HPI radiology book fan too.
I do radiology, and the only radiology book I own is the HPI one. At one radiology job I was fortunate to have Stedman's, HPI, and some other small blue radiology book at my desk. I found the HPI one to be most complete and helpful.

(Single) contiguous (axial) image was obtained from base of the skull to the vertex without (intravenous) IV contrast.
Not really sure about the word single and axial in this sentence.

They can do a single axial image but it is not as effective as doing contiguous axial images.
LVN(LPN) or imaging tech. sm
I don't know anything about medical assistant, but the LVN (licensed vocational nurse) program can be obtained at a local community college in sometimes only 12 months. The only bad thing is, almost the only jobs a new LVN/LPN can get any more are in nursing homes, as most of the patient care is now done by CNAs (aides) and most hospitals require RNs now, which is at least a three-year program at community college.
You might want to look into becoming an imaging technician, which is also a community college program, I think it takes two years but not sure--and be trained and licensed to perform scans, IVPs, radiology, etc.

Hard to believe sonography & imaging tech jobs are
I look on some of the job websites for my state, and there appear to be a lot more jobs than MT jobs. And the pay is better, too - around $42-52K.
Mortuaries, nahhh. I also think the whole funeral industry is a ripoff. Nursing is overworked and underpaid for what they have to know, (much like MT). Even if I wanted a teaching credential (which I don't), I'd have a lot more than 2 years of college ahead of me, especially considering all the courses I didn't take in high school, especially math. One of my sisters got a teaching credential (mainly as a fallback job, though she only taught a few elementary summer-school programs), and she had to have her master's in education in order to be credentialled.
What other sorts of things might an MT do well at? Also, an MT who is close to 60, so doesn't have 8 years to go to night school, and can't afford expensive tuition? I don't think I'm meticulous and detail-oriented enough to be a lab or pharmacy assistant, and the old back won't take kindly to a job that involves a lot of standing all day. Being equally up and down is best for me, and sitting is 2nd-best. Standing is the worst.
I've explored coding, but after being an MT, I just don't trust any clerical jobs in healthcare anymore. I'm sure they'll find a way to automate or offshore coding, just as they've done with MT. If I'm going to endure several years of night school, I want something that is more recession proof and can't be offshored as easily.
Interestingly, right now there are quite a few State MT jobs available near where I live, (such as for state mental hospitals and the prison system), but with all the layoffs, budget messes and furloughs, there's no way I'm going to take a State job and then sweat it every July when they can't balance the budget.
It's all sooo frustrating! When I fell into MT back in 1974, it was a perfect fit, after I'd bounced from office job to office job for many years before that. I like typing, and like working with words. (Sigh - if only I had the next 'Harry Potter'-like novel inside my head, waiting to be written.......)
Radiology transcription, what type of reports are considered radiology
I have lot of experience with everything and I would like to know what exactly is considered radiology so I know if I qualify for that type of work? I've had many types that I think qualify for radiology.

Just make a note in your book and go on. Every book I read you can find an error
or 2. Nobody is perfect. Lucky you only paid $60. New it is $80 or more.

Does anyone use both. I'm definitely getting the CD/ROM and am debating about buying both. I don't see any reason to have both but there could be something I don't know.
I noticed CD/ROMs are on backorder but they're selling downloadable versions. I can handle that.

RADIOLOGY
I used to type radiology in-house for patients in nursing homes. After I typed the report, I would fax them to the nursing homes and they would put that report in the patient's chart. Then I would send original report to doc to get signature. After those are signed, they are mailed out to the nursing homes. I am not really too sure why you are asking but hope this helps some. The doc's never read my reports because they trusted me but I am sure they would want to before they put their signature on anything.

I currently am typing radiology and have for 27 years. I also have to type in patient information but not in the manner you do. Yor are right, it is extremely time consuming the way you have to do it. You should have some kind of patient log or the information should already put in the template. No, you will not have a high line count in the manner you have to do it. Radiology reports, as you know, can be very short and the time it takes for you to get the information overrides the length of the report.

I was just wondering what other rad MT's are earning out there - and are U paid by report or by line? Which method do U think is better?

It is interesting although as mentioned already, it lends itself well to voice recognition (because it is very repetitive) and many of us are currently unemployed because of that technology. Wish I had your experience in today's workplace.
Go for Radiology...
It seems hard at first but after a while they say the same stuff over and over, and don't go into huge detail - many MT's who do it are paid per report (like me), so the bucks can really add up. I've been on the same account for 8 years, no secondary account, never run out of work and find it much more interesting than the usual discharge summaries, H & P's, etc...of course TAT is pretty short, which can be stressful, but overall I love it! At my company radiology accounts are considered the creme d'la creme (sp?) so we are treated with a tad more respect (since we have the cash cows)...try it, you'll like it!

$1.25 per rad report, and the report can be lengthy or a normal report pulled from a list.
Sadly, I just changed MT companies, and I'm only up to 30 reports per day. It's not the terminology or the program - it's because of the dictators! Their voices are are muffled (which may be due to their dictating equipment), they roll the viewer while dictating, bang films, and dictate over each other. I listen to them over and over, trying to hear the words! I've transcribed acute care, and over 15 years of radiology, but never had such a problem with hearing the dictator.
I have noticed too, that when I'm transcribing by myself, I get alot of normal reports pulled from the list. When there's others transcribing, I never get any normal reports at all - they're all really long. That could be one of my problems also.
There are no benefits, but I was told that they do withhold taxes.
I have read in the archives where some rad transcriptionists get paid between $2.00 and $3.00 per report, but I have never seen anywhere near that amount advertised.

6-7 cpl is very low for Radiology if you
have any experience at all. I work 2 jobs as an IC and make $1.25/report and 1 job as an employee and make $1.25/report. It is best to be paid per report unless you do nothing but MRIs and CTs then per line but not for less than $.10 a line.

In a perfect world where the doc dictates clear, has no marbles in his mouth, doesn''t talk away from the mic, doesn't run the alternator while he's dictating and has no hard accent, you could say that radiology is easy. I've been doing radiology for 30 years-believe me, I've had all kinds of characters dictating and I know what I'm talking about.

Radiology going VR
I just heard my rad account is going to voice recognition. Apparently it is a trend in radiology so you may not have to worry about it much longer.

and this is soooo true! I have caught so many mistakes just from the radiologist, not to mention if they ever went VR! My sister was in the hospital and they did the VR type reports and she nearly died from being given medication that she was CLEARLY allergic to from all her regular typed reports. She has suit on them right now for their blunders!

Radiology is like anything else
It has hard parts and it has easier parts. I like it because of not having to look up so much info on medicines. It is like anything else, though, the more you do it the less complicated it gets. The hard part is trying to get lines in. I have a good account, that pays by mean line, or report, and that is only way that I will do this particular type of report as rad reports are usually so short.

Hi all....is $1.25 per report good for radiology? It is $1.25 per report and any reports over 2 minutes are an additional $1.25. So a 6 minute report would be billed as 3 reports. Is this a good rate?? It is using Meditech and a Lanier. Any info would be appreciated as I'm considering a position. Thanks!

Radiology going away
Don't count on having many more radiology accounts. They are all going to VR. However, as a caveat, these arrogant SOBs aren't proofing their work and are sending it through w/o editing. I am waiting for the first lawsuit to come through to make them come to their senses.
Radiology is all about
anatomy, views, contrast, and having a huge English vocabulary. Accuracy needs to be 100%, including listening for MD misspeaks.
The dictators I've done have been very quick and efficient for the most part, but most of them have PhDs on top of their MD, and they are super smart and worthy of really smart MTs because usually their dictation is so efficient.
I like the HPI radiology boook and I have The World's Best Anatomical Charts book that I found at Barnes and Noble. I also used Stedman's ortho book and HPI neuro book, and Stedman's ENT book, cardiology & pulmonology book, GI/GU, OB-GYN, and oncology book. I also used Sanders' lab book, especially the list of eponymic diseases and syndromes.
Never let your mind wander, no matter how repetitive it seems. Don't mix up the sound-alike anatomical terms. Always think about what part of the body you are in.
Bear in mind that radiologist's books spell certain terms differently than the Stedman's books do, but usually the MD's spelling is in the HPI books. It's a shame the publishers can't get all the books to agree because MTs tend to think the radiologists can't spell and the radiologists don't know why the MTs use different spelling from the medical books. Grrrrr.

Does anyone know how to get into QA for Radiology? I very rarely see these types of positions offered. I don't know if it's because there are no specialty QA positions or if I'm just out of the loop. Also, if there are such positions, who is hiring for them? Thanks in advance!
Radiology is NOT all going to VR
Decent VR is really expensive and the majority of accounts can't afford the platform. There are at least three current jobs on another website for radiology and I have more work than I can do.
We are losing Rad accounts to VR, but far from ALL of them...
