Nana needs a hobby

Wow, you sure waste a lot of time getting your anger out at someone who is within her rights to comment on the quality or lack of quality of MTs. Maybe you Nana are a decent MT and they certainly are out there. Can a QA person vent or do you have such a problem with that that you have to write an editorial about it. Get working and get over yourself.

You need a HOBBY...
something to capture your interests, and I can assure you that being an MT is not a hobby. What do you like to do?
Go Nana!
I am not very old, but have been doing this a long, long time. I worked on a typewriter with carbon paper. Strolling down memory lane! What a joy! I'm sure you found out like I did that the world of computers has made life easier to a degree; however, like you I am from the old school where I still pull out my Stedman's even though Google is just a keystroke or two away from me. I guess I just feel better seeing it in black and white on paper. I have had to learn to dwell amongst this wonderful cyber world! I love this board, and I liked your post. Well put! We need you Nana! Keep up the good work! The new MTs coming into this field are the wave to our future, and I feel they deserve a chance. We were all new once. A lot of us were fortunate enough to work on-site for a long time before diving into the shark tank from home! LOL - This helped me so much! I am still learning each and every day even after this long time and I am loving every minute of it. MT or BUST!
Nana - thanks. (sm)
Can I get more advice from you on that first way you do it - when I talk to my boss Monday?
How long have you been doing this? Is it working to everybody's satisfaction?
Please write to me if you have anything more you can share about it. I'm working for a walk-in clinic with about 5 centers and they are going a little crazy at the moment trying to figure out how to do all this.

Nana....
if you had a website that was hijacked...do you really believe that you have to just let it go and go start another site? She is telling a HUGE LIE. Her story makes no sense whatsoever. She has no control over this site anymore BECAUSE IT IS NOT HERS!!!! IT WAS NEVER HERS!!!! She was just the money handler! She is a big, fat, greasy LIAR!
do you have a good hobby???
I love stained glass work.....You set aside a certain number of hours to transcribe each day, knowing then you will have time to do something creative and fun and also knowing that your transcription $$ is going to pay for your hobby. But, as I have stated before, after about 30 years of transcribing, I burned out absolutely completely and totally; took a two year hiatus; but now am back full throttle!!
Get him involved in either a hobby, or doing
volunteer work. Let him do for those less fortunate and maybe his life will seem pretty good. If he feels needed that may change his whole attitude and everything else with just fall into place.
He might also need some adjustments in his meds. It s/l there is some depression involved, but it could just be situational and the counseling will help with that. Meds could possibly diminish his libido and it would be worth talking to his doctor to see if that could be the case in his situation.
Maybe you could make him a list of little things to do to help out, or plan the meals and have recipes on index cards so that he can actually prepare the meal. If he is home all day he needs to at least be doing the daily chores.
I loved it too Nana, old MT here also,
boy do I remember the carbon. I started in radiology where there were 5 carbons, and if I made a typo I had to fix every single one, what a pain that was. Let me say also, I was with MQ 16 years and if I left a blank for QA, they never gave me feedback, never told me about Google (not a computer lover), when I researched, I used books, of which I have many. I was lucky enough as far as the doctor names that my two accounts were local and I had the good old phonebook. I did like your post, made remember the good old days, and sometimes I wish I had one of those typewriters. Have a nice day everyone, I am off today, going to visit my expectant daughter.
Nana, U are a perfect example...
of all that was wrong with this site B4 - negative, repetitive bashing for no reason other than boredom, I guess. It's interesting how this site has become a whole lot more informative and fun to come to now that all of us horrible "banned" people have come back - in fact, I wear my banning by what's her name as a badge of honor! So please do enjoy her new site - and we'll enjoy ours, mmmkay?
Make my own. Cooking's a hobby.
I'd almost like to be a caterer or chef, but I don't like working evenings or weekends. LOL
MT is profession, not a sloppy hobby. sm
Well said. And that is why I am fed up with the whining. It reflects badly on us all. If someone interested in MT comes on and reads the posts, they are going to think MT is full of whiners who are at the mercy of the companies. They will read posts with simple typos and think you don't have to be precise and professional to do this job. That is not how I want my profession to be viewed, especially when I think of all the hard work I put into this job. So take you typos and whining to a blog, where just those of you with no pride in your profession and no ambition will have to be witness to it.
Glad I'm not the only one. I guess it is a hobby too.
Kind of addicted to looking these days. At least it keeps me off e bay. LOL.

I wanted to move this discussion back to the top so I started a new thread. She asked if I share any websites or information with the MTs I QA and my answer is, I do.
For instance, when looking up a doctor's name, did any of the MTs here know that most states have a state department for professional licensing where you can look up MDs, DOs, physical therapists, nurses (both LPNs and RNs), etc? So in addition to using the AMA, website which is great because you can do a sound alike search, you can also go to each state's licensing website. I should add that no one ever told me this when I was an MT. I just discovered it on my own because I cared enough about the work I put out to make sure I exhausted every resource possible.
Another nifty, self-taught, trick of the trade... I have the website for every facility for every account I work on in my favorites. A lot of times a facility will have a doctor finder on their website. In addition, they may say the name of a ward or department that you might be able to reference on the website. Not to mention, it helps to know where the facility is located for future reference such as when a dictator mentions a place of employment in a patient's social history. If you know where your facility is located, then you can look at the yellow pages online for that area.
I always share any great terminology or drug websites I come across. There's a great website that will list most every hospital in any particular state and a link to that hospital's website. All I had to do to find that website was do a Google search for "hospitals in Arizona or California or Texas" (whatever state you need) and I found theagapecenter.com website.
No one person ever sat me down as an MT and gave me a step by step on how to use my reference books or the internet. I taught myself because I CARED. That's the problem with a lot of the MTs I QA. They don't care. The say the MTSOs only care about the bottom line, well the MTs only care about the bottom line too and the end result is poor quality and subsequently loss of American jobs.
But so what?!?! I'm just a dragon lady and most QA people are just big meanies anyway. MTs can keep blaming everybody else for their low wages and offshoring, but it's time to step up and take some responsibility.

Through those many years we had the luxury of time for research and education. These MTs today must concentrate on getting as many lines as possible within as short a time as possible. There is just not the luxury of time for research we enjoyed. Its a whole different ball game now. These young robots need every bit of patience, encouragement, and help we can give them in their struggle to maintain a living in our chosen field. They memorize quickly and do not forget the things they must learn on the fly.
Wasn't bashing you Nana!
I just thought my post might come off like that LOL. Guess I was sort of agreeing with you! Didn't want it to sound wrong since I attached it to yours!
she is nana - the one who is 'spreading the word' over here
that over there is up and running.
She does not get it yet.
question for all you hobby loving gals
I'm making all my x-mas gifts this year, and I bought some plastic bottles and to decorate them I would like to make them look "frosted" because I just think it looks better. I have looked high and low on how to do this, i'm making scented lotion and I could not find anything on the net. Would you guys know how to do this? Hope I get some answers, thanks!
Cool internet hobby. Give it a try!
Download Google Earth and you will have a blast. You can basically fly anywhere on earth that you want via satellite pictures and then zoom in from above. If you fiddle with the controls at the bottom you can actually tilt the view so that you actually feel like you're flying over at a low altitude. You can type in the address of your childhood home and fly right over. Also, check out some of the wonders of the world. Flying over Rome and the ruins is pretty good. The only problem is that if you're flying over a really green area or if the ground colors are a certain hue, it's blurry. I actually found a backyard swimming pool in Karachi, Pakistan. Whodathunk? I saw mention of it in an online newspaper and it's really fun.
I agree with you, Nana. It's an uphill battle. SM
I do my part by being very lenient with the MTs when reviewing work -- i.e., I don't count off for using cc versus mL or for typing Alzheimer's instead of Alzheimer, etc. The dangerous abbreviations list is for written notes and orders on the patient's chart.
The flip side of me being lenient is when another QA person counts off for things I've been lenient on, then the MT throws a fit and says "well one QA says one thing and another QA says another."
So, there is a need for a standardized set of rules across the board that all companies should adhere to. I'm just not sure AAMT or whatever they are called now are the people for the job. It should be a committee made up of MTs and dictators.

one more ques nana: digital signature. ?how do you get it on there (sm)
On that first way you are describing --- are your docs able to SIGN OFF on the note digitally?
Absolutely! Wonderful hobby and your skills will only improve.
I started knitting, quit for a year when I got discouraged because I couldn't fix my mistakes easily, then went back, determined to learn the craft. For me, what was wonderful was when I automatically could recognize what was right and wrong, and fix it easily. Now, I have more yarn than I could ever use, and more projects started than I'll ever finish. It's a lifetime hobby. There'll never be enough yarn.
Mine say "Thergonomic hand aids". I bought them at Hobby Lobby sm
because I can't find Hand-Eze at my local OfficeMax (live in a small town) any more. These are fingerless gloves made of something like spandex.
I don't know about a website, but Hobby Lobby is a craft store.
I can't type comfortably any more without them - kind of like being uncomfortable in a car without a seatbelt.
