Falling asleep...
I don't even need the alarm. I put my head back on the "cushy" part of the chair, tell myself "okay, I need 5 minutes," and I'm out like a light and will wake up 5-6 minutes later! I think the sheer boredom of what we do has a hypnotic effect on some of us and causes this. But you're right, when you wake up you're okay for awhile until the next time, whether it's 1 hour later or 4 or whatever. Glad I'm not the only one.
falling asleep
Yes. I have it also, but mine is a health issue due to not sleeping post laminectomy syndrome. I have found that eating hot chips and/or eating crushed ice really helps. Above all since you are healthy, agree with the others see a doc. Hope this helps in the meantime.
Yep. I was falling asleep sitting up.
I went to the neurologist, and he put me on Provigil. Works pretty good. I'm also switching to an earlier work shift.
Falling asleep at the keyboard

I wondered if anyone has any tips for me.  I have been an MT going on six years.  Suddenly, whenever I am typing, I am drifting off to sleep (and somehow still typing?).  I have tried background noise, getting up and stretching, walking, drinking, eating so much I've gained weight, nothing works!  As soon as I start typing, I relax and can't hold my eyes open.  Finally, I take a nap but my line count is really taking a hit.  This has gone on for several months.  I do not believe it is a health issue - I have always been healthy as a horse.  I think it is bordom or lack of mental challenge?  I really can't see myself moving on to another career.  Help!  I need to stay awake!  Anyone else have this problem?

falling asleep at the keyboard

Actually, I do.  If I am a passenger I cannot stay awake.  If I am driving, I realize I am halfway where I am going and cannot remember anything leading up to that point (such as lights, stop signs) like I am on autopilot.  Maybe I should see a doctor.  I appreciate all the responses.

I only relisten if I was falling asleep while typing. -nm

I hate it when birds do that. We had swarms of birds flying around
our house a couple of weeks ago. I was trying to work and kept seeing black things whizzing by the living room window. When I looked outside, the birds were all over the fence, lawn, trees, car, and garden. It was like the old Alfred Hitchcock movie. Creepy birds. DH likes them and keeps putting birdhouses and feeders out. I can't stand the bird doodoo everywhere.

I know. I try to be as tactful, helpful, and gentle as possible.
I always give references and explain why something is incorrect. I try NOT to use the word wrong itself.

Some take it okay and are just shocked. For others it is as if I have personally wounded them.

One of the most common errors I see from the most experienced MTs (I am talking more than 10 years of experience, the been-doing-this-since-I-was-born kind): Using nitrates instead of nitrites in lab work. Using the term palpations instead of palpitations on a heart exam. Failing to use correct forms of mucus and mucous.

I would urge any MT, regardless of where they work or how long they have been in this business, to beg and plead for appropriate QA of their work. It is the only way discrepancies, untruths, poor habits, and a flat out incorrect terminology issue can be corrected.

If you value your work, value your QA feedback.

I'd suggest a gentle cycle and even then you may come out with a tangled
mass, depending on how the yarn was rolled up.
Gentle stretching and ibuprofen initially,
then as it gets bearable, take up walking AT LEAST twice a week. Walk at a good speed with good posture, about 2 miles/45 minutes. The most logical way to keep a back working right when you sit in a chair all day is to walk regularly.

I'm 44, and thankfully all I get are muscle aches. At times there will be actual point tenderness in one of those (2) little dimples on your sacrum, you know, right in that area where a lot of tattoos are put? If you get that, you can massage that spot. It indicates a muscular problem, which is good, and it means you are too tight and need more exercise and especially stretching. The most important direction to stretch (since we are curled up in a C position so much of the day) is exercises that arch the back, so learn safe and effective stretches for that direction. What trainers are saying about stretching lately is stretch after exercise, not so much before, and hold each stretch longer. There are some muscles that don't even engage in the stretch until you've held it 30 seconds. I think piriformis is an important stretch.

It's very relaxing and restorative to stretch the right way.

Hope you are feeling better soon.
You could bathe with a gentle shampoo or even dish detergent, rinse well and if you have vinegar do

a vinegar rinse and then do a final rinse.   This might drown the fleas or at least stun them.  If dog is light colored you might be able to see them and pick them off when dog is wet.   If you have a dog brush, brush it outside and you might get some off that way.  If you have tea tree oil you can put some around its neck area or on a collar if you have one.   This is a fairly strong smell though and we've always had to wash it off the same day, though lots of people swear by this.   I can't think of anything else you can do with stuff you already have around the house.

We adopted 3 kittens from the shelter and have never had a flea problem, but now we can't seem to get rid of them and my dog is on 3 different treatments and I still find an occasional flea.  She has developed a sensitivity to bites too and scratches all the time and can't take prednisone because she has Cushings.

Growing up we had a tri-colored Pembroke corgi.  He was the sweetest thing and I still miss him terribly, 30 years later.

OK...this is for the birds (lol!)

about the same as killing all birds over the bird flu sometimes...
you have to do what you have to do. If there is mad cow disease, everyone kills cows. If there is bird flu, we kill birds. If there is rabies, we kill dogs. Any epidemic in the making has to be stopped before the epidemic starts. Oh, and the West Nile virus, we kill mosquitos. The only thing with the deer ticks, we aren't forced to kill deer, people do that for sport. lol
like I said earlier...birds of a feather
geez! You call it reality. I call it rude and obnoxious. and if you think that's great, then you are one of her birds and I feel sorry for you.
To The Singing MT

Thanks for your nice note a few pages back.  I had the pleasure of seeing Jill in her home town of Philly when she was touring with Sting a few years ago--amazing! BTW, one of the entertainment shows was playing "Golden" last night while they were talking to some of the Golden Globe winners--it was perfect!

To The Singing MT

Have you heard of  The Singing Podiatrist?  I stumbled upon her very interesting site. She has a lovely voice

Hmmmm...Birds of a Feather Flock Together.

How horrible to be your neighbor, no matter what color. I feel sorry for them.

The birds have been swarming like crazy around here today....sm
it's obvious the atmosphere is changing between the cold front heading this way and Wilma working her way to Florida.    The last time I saw the birds swarming like this was right before Katrina hit.
If they are babies, lots of times the birds and
rodent population make short work of them in a few weeks. Happens all the time where I live. The babies don't have a high success rate! Good luck! Yuck is right!
we will be singing the blues
They wont be crying the blues.they already have hired more than enough transcriptionists and from what I surmise, as my doctors now spell EVERYTHING, they hired newbies or not to swift MT's.  What we need is a union, however, in the past the minute union is talked about, many MT's backtrack and say..they dont mind the decrease in pay, they like working out of their homes and dont want to change anything..yada, yada, yada..
You are singing my sad song

What you have described happens to me to and it feels like a personal attack.  You can see the ER jobs there, you work your butt off to get to them just to watch them disappear before your eyes.  It can cause major depression!  This is how we make our living.....don't mess with us!

If you find an answer, I would love to know what it is.

How sweet. I love backyard birds... thanks for sharing.

Isn't there a difference between singing and screeching?

No one could ever or will every match Barbara's voice!  Anyone can get high pitched if they scream which Celine does compared to Barbara.  Celine might be good but never will compare to Barbara!

They looked like the singing raisins.

what happened to Theresa the singing MT?
Just wondering how she made out with the voting process.
Sorry about that, guess I was asleep for
that answer.
..but if it's nice out, I'll open window so I can hear the birds. nm

LOL--Agree. I fall asleep sometimes too..
just nod right off. I go back and listen, and I've always typed it correctly.
45 to 70 minutes, if I don't fall asleep. nm

I actually did fall asleep once, and kept typing.
When I semi-woke up at the end of the report I sent it in without extra proofing...had to do some fancy explaining the next day!  Now when I get that way, I take a 20-minute nap (set a timer).  It really does help for a couple of hours.
I do the same thing! I have fell asleep at ...sm
my keyboard before. It sucks trying to wake yourself up. I haven't found anything really that helps me that much.

I think the boys did a much better job than the girls -- I really like Taylor's style of singing
let's face it, I just enjoy everything about Ace!  For the girls, I like Paris, and what's not to like about Kelly?
hoo boy I am still half asleep, "better hope" is what I was trying to say - nm

Sorry...wrong board. I am half asleep here in Calif.

So true, when I worked inhouse, the doc fell asleep
while dictating and actually continued to dictate while asleep "we packed the leg wound with BBQ sauce and grilled it". The service typed it as such and flagged it. Boy, was doc ever embarrassed. His fault for doing 50 charts at a pop.
I meant 2 medium garlic divided into the cloves...was half asleep LOL

My E key keeps falling off!
I have worked in quite a few hotel rooms also. In fact, I would not consider one job recently because they could not guarantee an internet platform but were still using phone lines for some accounts.
The Sky is Falling
Please read my post (Slave Wages). As I explained Medquist is paying 5 cpl with voice recognition. Even if one were to produce 10,000/week or 200 lines/day, that would not be enough to live off, especially for a person like me with a daughter. You can laugh it off. Remember they did the same thing to Noah. Keep lowering your prices until you are at 1 cent per job. It will be the best for everybody!!
that sky has been falling since the 80s -
and it hasn't caved yet. Not going to happen - not TOTALLY.

But a backup might be right for you.

falling wages...
Unfortuntely, it is true, falling wages for MTs and experience plays not part in it.  But, there is a reason for it....as we all are aware, hospitals have chosen to cut their debt by outsourcing medical transcription to India for 1/4 the cost it would be to pay us here in the states.  Let's face it...MT jobs here in the states will soon be absolete, and thinking about the wages ever getting better, forget.  My advise is for all MTs to seek another source of income before it is too late....i.e. perhaps going back to school or seeking one of the higher paying jobs or at least equal to medical transcription such as Walmarts, Meijers, restaurants, etc...and eh...even get medical benefits, vacation time, etc....I currently receive none of that from my employer and was also told to take a pay decrease as of this 12/02...along with everyone else, so was paying us 10 cents per line, but little trick to that, lines are 70 characters per line with spaces included....everyone does 65 characters with spaces...now from 10 cents to 9 cents and 70 characters per line...hmmmm, I figure I am making 8 cents a line now.  Yes indeed, I am out of transcription after 25 years coming this income tax refund check.  Transcription has become a degrading job!
Falling off trampoline
They don't have to fall the trampoline to get hurt. They break bones, twist muscles, tendons, on impact with the trampoline. If they hit the coils that hold the trampoline onto the frame and the coil comes loose, they can suffer puncture wounds to the eyes or other parts of their body.

People need to teach safety measures to their kids when they are on a trampoline and never leave them unsupervised on it. It can be fatal.
