My pre-teen Halloween story - happened about

There were always literally hundreds of kids out in our neighborhood on Halloween. When I was about 12, I got a gray wig and messed up the hair, a rubber mask with a large nose and lots of wrinkles, wore an old long plaid robe tied at the waist and socks with open-toe bedroom slippers. So here I am, messy gray hair, ugly face, robe and slippers and walked with a limp down the dark street. Two men were waiting at the end of a driveway for their children. Here I come, limping by and one man pokes the other one in the side and says, "Hey, Jim. Is that your wife or mine?"
I will remember that for as long as I live.

Halloween
Go to marthastewart.com and search 'halloween'. There's a ton of stuff in there. Have fun!
I don't like Halloween....
so I'm not up for that challenge. It has nothing to do with religion, or beliefs, or such....I just do not like Halloween. I did the whole bit when my kids were little, but never liked it (they could not tell that though!).
I don't like witches, or spiders, or cupcakes that look like them. Don't like pointy hats and long chins with warts on them and especially warts with hair growing out of them. Don't like to scare people or to be scared. Don't like hairy spiders hanging on a thread. Don't like green faces on little children. Don't like mucous-looking stuff dripping off someone's face or, worse yet, off another body part.
I am being somewhat facetious but...I really do not like Halloween.
BUT I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE CANDY CORN!!! AND THE CANDY CORN THAT IS SHAPED LIKE A PUMPKIN.
TEEN PROBLEMS
I wish I had all boys! How do you deal with a teenage girl who continues to lie about everything. Sweet in your face one minute and the next thing you know it is all a lie. It is so devastating every time it happens. It breaks my heart. We have even tried counseling. This is a girl who has everything going for her. She's beautiful, talented beautiful voice (college scholarships), athletic and top student. She draws trashy boys like flies and tries to hide the relationship from us because she knows we will disapprove. Daddy teaches at the same high school so it is hard on them both. Him, because what she does reflects on him and the little respect he gets from his students and her, because I know it has to be hard having Daddy around all the time. But she has not earned our trust. There has been one incident after another for four years (She is a junior in high school). Just when we begin to trust just a little, we find something else. Last night while we were at a meeting, she had a "boyfriend" whom we do not approve of, come to our house. How she got her little brother to keep quiet I don't know but I will find out. (He is the worst secret keeper.)
My husband and I are struggling financially to provide the things she needs to further her talent and school activities and functions. The latest is giving up things we usually do for Christmas to buy her a used vehicle. Now, after this latest stunt I can't justify it or trust her enough to let her get into to go anywhere.
Thanks for letting me vent. Anyone have any advice?
teen problems
i could have written this post myself. at least we have seen the boyfriend, still do not like him. if you talk to any parent of teenage girls this post could have been written by anybody. wish i had all boys also.
To Tia on teen problems
I'm not sure why you think boys are easier. I have both and they all try to pull the same stunts.
Most are doing great but one in particular (a boy) could just as easily have been your daughter. Lie, lie, lie and he acts like we have stupid written on our foreheads or were never teens.
With the last "minor" accident, but the 4th one, the car is locked up tight and Lord, you'd think we were depriving him of food and water. Thank God he has never hurt anyone or himself but when you already have restrictions, (no use of cell phone, no more than 1 kid and only a sibling in the car)...well...you just can't justify letting your girlfriend drive the car home because you were feeling "kinda dizzy"........He just does not get the drift of the need to call home for any reason that he can not handle, and especially if your "kinda dizzy" 56 miles from home when you were supposed to be right around the block...
He's sulking, trying to make our lives miserable, disrupting the rest of the household, but I've now put a chart up and for every act of defiance, whining etc, another week gets added to the lack of wheels... took him a couple of hours and 4 more weeks tacked on to realize I mean business.
Christmas vacation is coming up and guess who will be w/o wheels during it
You have to realize that your not her friend and the decisions you make now on your expectations and her inability to follow them needs to be cleared up. Hang in there, they do eventually grow out of this stage...only to head into another one.
I have a teen son with acne, not bad and
not cystic. We've been to the dermatologist twice without success. He now uses a generic (Wal-Mart) version of Proactiv and it isn't 100%, but lots better. Accutane can cause you to be suicidal and to me the risks just are too great versus any possible benefit.
The blackheads can be handled with good hand washing, keep his hands off his face, washing his hair daily if it is oily like my son's, and washing his wash a couple of times a day. The white heads could be handled with a soft puffing, like those disposable pads that are on the market. There are antibiotics that might be helpful. There are lots of OTC products that might be a little pricey, but I would exhaust every possible option before trying Accutane. We have a local oral/maxillofacial surgeon that has a clinician in his office to help with skin problems and they sell products that are not prescription. I can't remember the name, but do a goggle search for acne products.
I worked as a teen..
and I think it's a good experience. My dad didn't want me to work, but I insisted because I wanted my own money.
Well, I never worked as a teen (more)
and I had next to no responsibilies, had a new car and a checking account that was always just magically filled with money. It was a huge disservice to me. No teen is going to turn down a life like that...they just don't know any better, but my life would have been much easier had I learned responsibility as a kid rather than struggling to do that as an adult.
My parents are wonderful people and did what they thought was best. I just wish they would have been a little "meaner."
Halloween Candy
Milky Way!
Whatever is on sale at 50-75% off the day after Halloween....sm
Target usually has the most "good stuff" candy on sale i.e. the Hershey bars, M&Ms, Snickers, etc. Usually the day after Halloween it's 50% off and 2 days after Halloween it's 75% off. I stock up on enough candy to last until Christmas, then after Christmas get enough to last until Valentine's Day, then after Valentine's Day I grab whatever I can because there's no major "candy events" for a while to get it cheap!
For me, I would have to say Halloween and Candyman. nm

I worked as a housekeeper as a teen.
It paid maybe $.20 more than minimum wage. I think you can make more than that as an MT, don't you? You just haven't found your fit yet. If housekeeping is something you really want to do, go for it. It was a really nasty job, though. I'd rather do transcription at home than clean up after a bunch of slobs. Oh, disgusting. And the things people would leave behind in their rooms.
I did not work as a teen as my parents would not let me - sm
I did look for work though and tried to get work locally (i.e. walk or ride bike) but there was not much around us and the 2 positions I tried for I did not get unfortunately. My mom refused to drive me anywhere (driven out by my 2 older brothers so I suffered), I bummed rides everywhere or rode my bike, but my 3 best friends either had a car or had one available to them so I got around okay, but was not allowed to work (only 1 of my friends worked but that was only because her father had a business he ran out of the house). So I tried to earn money where I could but it was few are far between, dog sitting, cutting neighbor's grass on a regular basis for $10 a pop every 2 weeks, the odd babysitting job (not a lot of little kids where I lived at the time), think I made about $25 a month in the summer months. I wish they had let me work while I was in school. I did work after I graduated though, my summer job (warehouse/front office gopher where my mom worked) before college was my supply money for college, and I work a few PT jobs during school as well, probably $50 a week but it helped. But YES teenagers should be allowed to work as long as their grades are good. We plan to have our 2 work at King's Dominion once they are old enough (only 14 miles away) for summer jobs, I might too, who knows!
Unless he is being interviewed by another teen (probably not), shorts are NOT appropriate. What is

I hired a neighborhood teen (sm)
I had my children at home, and hired a responsible neighborhood teenager. I worked part-time during the day with the sitter and then a couple of hours in the evenings when my husband got home. This was much cheaper than day care plus I got to take breaks and see my child and if my children skinned a knee or were really upset, I could take a break and take care ofYou need a backup in case the sitter is unavailable. It worked really well for me. Even better if you know another mom nearby with a child your chid could play with. Don't be fooled though - it is challenging and you will be tired, but was worth it to me :-)
Group halloween costumes
Need halloween costume for 4 people, group ideas. We don't want anything like sponge bob or cartoony. ANy good ideas??? we have a party to go to.
Halloween twinkle lights.
These lights are adorable. If you weren't going to have the kids make them, perhaps you could make them up ahead of time to "decorate". Twinkle lights are sold at the dollar stores nowadays for a buck!!!

What does being a Christian have to do with Halloween? see message
Your Halloween Party sounds fun!!! I was thinking about doing one for my 6-year-old, having the kids dress up.
But I do have to ask, just because you are a Christian does not mean you can't celebrate Halloween. In fact, you ARE celebrating "Halloween", just on a different day. I understand the meaning of Halloween isn't the best, however, that is the day that is set aside and Halloween has been totally commercialized anyway, so it is not like I am sitting at home worshiping un-Christian like things or trying to be a witch. Do you see what I mean? I am not trying to be mean, I too am a Christian, but we do take the kids out on Halloween.
You win! I'm coming to your house for Halloween!
on my broomstick! LOL
I'm a Christian, I don't celebrate Halloween but
I do have a harvest carnival for my friends kids. They love it and every year it's bigger than the year before.
Halloween has Christian origin. Please sm

For mom with teen girls, what type of dance classes sm
are appropriate for learning moves to try out for drill team? my daughter is 14 and has never been in any dance classes. i am puzzled by the jazz, hip/hop, etc. and have no clue where she needs to start. she wants to try out for the drill team next year. TIA!
This actually looks do-able. I haven't dieted since a teen. Hated obsessing about food.

I challenge you all to host a Halloween/Fall party at your house this year! sm
You will have an eyeball! I mean, ball.
This will be my 1st, usually my sister-in-law does it. I picked up A Taste of Home's Halloween issue and if that doesn't inspire you to do something this fall, then you might be dead...pun intended.
For dessert I am going to make little witches that will make a neat centerpiece. Here's how you do it: Take 16 large marshmallows, oreo cookies, coconut slivers (for the hair that you dye green with food coloring), Hershey kisses and peanut butter cups (miniature) that will be the top of her hat (place candies on top of oreo chocolate cookie (minus one side of cookie and the frosting). Use pretzels for her broomstick. These things are so cute I can hardly stand it.
2. Spider cupcakes. Use chocolate EVERYTHING and for the legs use 8 small pieces of licorice dangling from the cupcake and anything small and red for the eys (M&M minis) or red icing.
There are tons of ideas and recipes. The main dish will be Witch's Brew Stew and it looks awesome! If you want the recipe, email me. If not, then drop dead.
Oh, and for the kiddies, I will be playing games like pin the stem on the pumpkin and bobbing for body parts (will probably call this game something else), but you fill up a large tin bucket, stain the water black and put things in inside. Each kid takes turns using their hands to try to find 3 things you tell them to find in this nasty mixture of stuff using their HANDS, not mouth.....
So, get your invitations out, dust off your printers and have fun! I'm doing this mid-month, not on Halloween since I am a Christian and we don't celebrate Halloween.

There was a story in the
21-year-old Mexican illegal whose citizenship was sped up so he could go to join the army because that was his dream. He died in Iraq. Funny, all of a sudden he was welcome in this country.
Yeah, and it's so easy working in the fields picking your vegetables so you don't have to pay more than a couple bucks a pound.
And those Vietnamese freeloaders....working 12 hours a day,7 days a week in their little markets and restaurants. Sheesh!
Okay, here's my story.
My Mom's middle name was Violet. She died in Spring of 2003. This year, guess what tiny little flowers are growing next to her headstone, not planted by me. I looked around to see if there were any nearby, and there was one violet a little ways away, but not 3 or 4 like they were clustered right next to her headstone. I know, the birds are responsible for it, but I really like to think she had something to do with it.
My MQ story
I was hired by MQ in April for clinic work. The clinic account was huge and always behind when I first started. There were constant emails begging for people to work extra and on weekends. Slowly, it started running out of work and they started slowly adding more and more accounts to my pool until I think I was up to around 20 (yes, 20). Most of this work was ER notes. I complained several times. The ER notes were done by some of the worst dictators I've ever heard -- mostly American's, but sounding like they were eating while competing in the world's fastest talker competition. I complained -- several times -- about no work, multiple accounts and the quality of dictators. Finally, I received an insulting email from my supervisor telling me that I should be able to do this work. I promptly replied that I could "do" this work, but that they did not pay me enough for the headache and resigned on the spot. They really complained about everyone sending things to QA and QC, but with most of the accounts I was on, every report went to one or the other. I'm not used to turning in reports filled with blanks and I and was not comfortable with the quality of work I was producing. I'm certainly not the best Transcriptionist in the world, but I'm not the worst either and I actually care about what my work looks like. With MQ I was lucky to make 100 lines an hour. With my current job where I have been almost 2 years I make about 200-250 lines an hour and I also have gotten another part time job working for a local person where I make about 250-300 lines an hour.
I already had a full time transcription job with a smaller company I love and only went with MQ part time for tax purposes. My experience was not a good one. I personally would not work there again nor recommend employment there. On a side note, an MT I used to work for locally went to MQ, she lasted a little over a year. She referred someone who started 2 weeks before me and she lasted a little over 2 months. These MTs left for basically the same reasons. I can say that experiences will vary depending on what office you are at as will pay. An MT I know was hired by a PA office at 7.5 cents a line for acute care (15 years acute care experience). I was hired by the Dallas office at 9.25 a line for clinic (8 years clinic experience). My base was actually 8.25. I had to produce 6,000 lines in a pay period with 1600 of these lines done on the weekend to get the extra penny a line.
It's the same old story...
You can lead a horse to water.... There's planned parenthood, free clinics, and 3 dozen forms of birth control. In a time of more ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy than ever, we have rampant unplanned pregnancies. It boils down to taking responsibility, and you can only do so much. There's a whole lot of partying and "hookin up" going on out there, and when that happens, the birth control goes out the window.
SO WHAT IS THE STORY???
Is it better for us SE people or worse?

My story!
Hello I wanted to tell you my story so you know it is not just you. I was thriving at the local hospital I had worked at for over 2 years having working my way into transcription and coding successfully. Then there was a boss that did not like me. I was finally at full time transcription and zooming along at it. The doctors were pleased, the administration was pleased, etc. The jobs were finally staying caught up. Well this woman was very very rude! A lot to tell but the basis was she told me that if I ever planned to work at home I would never make it because my 80-120 radiology jobs a day would not cut it (these were x-rays, CTs, MRIs, mammograms, CT-guidance, needle aspirations). I knew better but she still hurt my feelings by saying that. Nobody else except the combination of myself and two other girls, one old timer and one very new had ever been able to keep things caught up before and after I left either one. I got a work at home job and left there asap. Finally got my first radiology job after having worked at one national for 4 months and one a year. The second had a radiology opening and I am thriving like mad. I would love to find her and let her know a few things. Anyways, the moral is do not give up if you feel you can do it. Every company and every account is different. The first national company, account, and superviser were not for me and I strugged big time. This second company has been pretty good. My acute care was fine I just always loved radiology and am better at it. Some hate it. Keep going until you find your fit and I wish you the best of luck!! Don't let one person and/or company get you down. Keen on keeping on!!
Here's my story.
I worked in a doctor's office for many years and loved it. I would still be there except I now work at home which is better for me because I have children. There are some advertisements for Transcriptionist but like you said, not a lot. It may not hurt to start calling different offices. They have such a hard time finding transcriptionist, they may just be "making do". You could call and say you were interested in filling in when their regular transcriptionist was on vacation. That would get your foot in the door. I got my job the regular old way, I answered an ad. Good luck!
The story was (sm)
Letterman went on and on about wanting to be on Oprah's show. Well, Oprah never called or took his calls. Then she was reported as saying that she doesn't watch Dave's show and doesn't know what he is doing. So Letterman finally laid off and didn't say much more about it because she never called.
So to him it probably was the event of the decade because he has been wanting to see her for so long!
Yes, it was touching.
Let me tell you a story.......
I worked for a very small MTSO, had two great accounts, no problem. This went on for several years, right up to the day she went off, fired several people, and threatened to fire me, also. I took that as my cue to leave said MTSO. I quit.
Several days later, she "needed" certain files that I had transcribed, which had already been sent to her and to the client. I had erased them from my computer. It was then, and still is MY computer. She told me point-blank that I had "no right to erase anything from that computer". Huh?????????
I suggested she contact her attorney, as I had done.
I never heard another word.
If it is your own property (computer), no one any way, any how, any where......can tell you what to do with it. Period.
Stand your ground and leave this company if they insist upon this policy. It is simply not right and it sure as heck is not legal.
Here's another story
A friend of mine had a contract with a local group of doctors and subbed some of her work out occasionally to me and another lady. The other lady didn't have a lot of experience, but had been subbing for her for over a year when all of a sudden she told her she had too many errors in her work and was not giving her any more. The lady got so upset by this that she wrote a letter to the doctor. The doctor in turn was so upset with the MT with the contract and wanted to know why she fired her and was concerned about getting sued and was just very upset that she had not even had a discussion with her or put her on probation or something. Maybe I should contact these docs adn apologize? It's not like I'm trying to get their business, just wanting to let them know I got fired and that I'm truly sorry they were unhappy. This lady doesn't even want to talk to me either by e-mail, messenger or phone. She is taying logged off of her messenger and won't answer e-mails at all. She is just hiding and avoiding this. I am not a confrontational person and have sent a nice e-mail to her, but she will not respond. Unbelievable. Maybe her docs will respond if I send them an apology.
More to the story...
If you want to hear more to the story, there were problems with TAT in the past. The fact of the matter is that when it occurred THIS PARTICULAR TIME, I was not fired on the spot, I was allowed to continue working for another week with geting work in on time, thinking everything was okay, not hearing a word that work would be ending and then at the beginning of the day today, told via e-mail that I was not needed any longer. She probably took that time to train someone else, I'm sure. I think that is so heartless and to not even face up to me or give me the courtesy of a phone call or a warning that my job was in danger. I hope this person can sleep at night.
