My friend's bird rang like the phone...

That was so confusing and quite funny. Also, my girlfriend from grade school had a parrot that overheard me say, "I'm going to the bathroom" and when I left the room it said, "Go pee pee, Go pee pee". I missed it, but they had a great laugh!

a bird!
LOL!!
If i had a choice I wouldn't do this guy, but i ALSO know I have it pretty good. No ESL doctors to date for me... but that doesn't ALWAYS mean the English ones are easy!! I have asked him, his partners, and the office manager consistently that he speak LOUDER because I honestly think that's the biggest problem. I have him up full blast and if you put a different doc on at the same level, it blasts my eardrums out! Nothing has changed, but that's why He is the only one to receive blanks in his dictation!! :)
Any pet bird lovers out there?

Thinking about getting a parrot, either Amazon or African Grey.  Anyone have experience with either?  Any pros or cons you can share?

I have had smaller birds in the past, i.e. cockatiels, so have some experience, but never have owned a larger bird.

Bird lover to the max!
I am an obessed bird lover!
Started with one cockatiel 7 years ago, fell in love and gradually got three more. I have 2 Australian Bourkes and 3 parakeets. Advice I can give you is get or subscribe to BirdTalk or Birds USA. I know these magazines are not widely available, but if you can, they are a great resource. The thing you have to keep in mind is the time you will have to spend taking care of a larger bird. That is key. Birds, especially the larger ones, require a lot of interaction and attention. I do a lot of reading about birds because I find them fascinating. Avian behavior studies are really only 20 years old, and what is being discovered is fascinating. They are much more intelligent than was previously thought. They now know that birds actually do understand at some point, they understand context. This explains how emotional they can be. Getting a large bird is a commitmentfor life. Birds feel emotion, and a bird can actually die of a broken heart if left alone too long, become destructive, or develop feather picking. It is a commitment one has to think about before getting a large parrot. Also, you may just surf the web for information. There are lots of websites, none of which I can think of right now! Good luck to you!
Bird rescue, etc. (s/m)
Interesting story about the birds! It sounds like you are doing a great favor to a lot of animals. Yes, actually the Queen Bee friend did request that I give back clothing I didn't want to her, but after the fact. I already had my nose a little bit out of joint by then, so felt that I would just put an end to the problem in its entirety by no longer accepting gifts with strings attached.

It is different with animals, though, and I agree with your request to give birds back to you, since the birds have feelings and have already had unstable lives. I got my cat through a cat rescue, and although he is now MY cat, I signed a paper agreeing to return him if I didn't want him (ha! that'll never happen), or couldn't care for him. That info. is actually on his microchip, as well. If I were to suddenly die or something, I would have the peace of mind in knowing that even if he ended up in the animal shelter, one scan of the chip would let them know the cat was to be returned to rescue, and they would actually have someone drive down to get him. Then he would be safe and well-cared-for until they found someone else who would spoil him as much as I do! ;)

I used to do this doctor that had a bird ...

and all you could hear was that flipping bird sqwaking and, excuse the pun, getting its feathers in a bunch.  That thing was loud and "bossy".  It knew a few words and I would hear it say "Hello, bye bye baby."  Ughhh...  It drove me insane because he would be on bright and early dictating from home his surgery patient H&Ps and all you can hear is that bird.  I think I had nightmares for a while about that thing.  It used to always make me want chicken for dinner.

Thankfully I no longer transcribe for him.

How about your husband tells the friend to tell his female friend to lose the #?

Oops, I forgot the bird flu. nm

So you bird lovers-name some of your favorite
When i got home, my parrot would ask me "being a good bird?" (as though since I had been gone, I may have been naughty).

My next favorite was when he got something especially good to eat, he would say "mmm, yum-yum!". We share spaghettis noodles and race either to the middle!
about the same as killing all birds over the bird flu sometimes...
you have to do what you have to do. If there is mad cow disease, everyone kills cows. If there is bird flu, we kill birds. If there is rabies, we kill dogs. Any epidemic in the making has to be stopped before the epidemic starts. Oh, and the West Nile virus, we kill mosquitos. The only thing with the deer ticks, we aren't forced to kill deer, people do that for sport. lol
Buy a Bird Talk USA to read over before deciding

It is an annual issue that discusses all the different species of birds and their quirks and specific needs.  If you do decide on an AG, consider one older than a year or 2 old as they go through a maturity phase during that time and can change personalities or change the object of their affection.  I have a personal preference to Soloman Island Eclectus males.  Like most Indonesian parrots, they prefer not to be touched on the back of the head/neck but with love and tenderness, they can overcome this.  These birds can bond to and love several people at the same time while maintaining the primary bond to their "main human" which an AG may not allow (all birds are individual in this).

Whatever parrot you decide upon, from a parrotlet to a maccaw, treat it as it is a 3 to 4-year-old child.  That is the intelligence and emotional level they function with.  Find out when they reach sexual maturity and be prepared to deal with the sometimes violent mood swings or changes in preference with whom they bond (this is very important especially if you hand feed one).  Rotate the toys every couple of weeks.  Don't be bashful about taking it on walks in the park, to the beach.  Be careful about birds of prey if you let it play on a perch outside.  A varied diet is a must (If it's good for you, it is for them.  If it's bad for you, it's bad for them).  Consider the toxicity of your house plants.  Let them take showers with you.

Okay, I'm addicted to them.  I'll stop now

Hmm, guess I shouldn't have included bird and humans. nm

A friend of a friend is taking CareerStep - sm
she is under the misguided idea that she will be making very good $ upon completing the course (a friend of hers supposedly makes $55K a year). I told her no way, at least not starting out and not unless all the factors click together, i.e. good typing speed, good pay (not for a newbie), good dictators (unlikely) and dedication to working hard. I told her what I make after 5 years (16K) but that is PT and I have the potential to double that if I would push myself, not procrastinate so much (I web surf way too much) and work more than I already do. I am not a fast typist but am good at what I do. I will be surprised if she follows though. She told me she'd call me when she finished the course, I just hope she is ready for reality.

C-phone used to call in to dictating systems to receive work. A special phone. nm
nm
I had a lot of trouble with static in my C-phone. I replaced the phone cord and that made a big

difference.  Also, have you tried a different headset?  Also someone told me one time that there is a microphone under your volume control on the right corner of the C-phone.  It's a tiny hole.  If you break off a Q-tip and stick that into the hole that will squelch a lot of background noise and that worked as well.  As far as getting your C-phone service, I heard that Dictaphone is "sunsetting" C-phones at the end of this year.  Meaning, they aren't going to service them anymore as they are considered an obsolete technology.  So, I would contact Dictaphone and see what your options are.

I know very little about Lanier equipment.  I've not used it as extensively as Dictaphone.  Is there a local appliance repair place in your area?  You might ask one of those places to take a look at your equipment and see what they think.  Kinda scary, cause they could do more harm than good, but maybe worth a shot.

Not much help, I know.  But I thought I would share what tiny bit of obscure knowledge I do have.

I've changed them between an old phone and new phone, but the same company, i.e. Nextel.

I use my c-phone whenever we travel. You can hook it directly into your room phone. Be sure and as
xx
I think you can dial into most systems that require C-phone without having a C-phone nm
.
I am wondering if there is a way to use your C-phone with Vonage phone service?
??
May have to change phone companies, have switched to job using a C-phone. sm
Currently have Embarq (formerly Sprint), and my usage will be going up about 12,000 minutes a month.  What phone companies offer really unlimited for a flat rate?  TIA.
C-phone and ATT. There is no problem with the C-phone, but ATT wouldn't let me use unlimited.
nm
I have cable phone access and my C-phone works - sm
I am not sure about you problem, because it sounds just like I have mine hooked up.  The only thing I can think of is that mine has 2 line hookups in the back of the phone.  If you have this too, I would just try the other one, which you probably have already done.  Sorry that was not much help.  I wish you luck
I have a very loud hum when using my C-phone, but no hum when I'm using the regular phone. SM

Anyone else experience this problem with their C-phone?  Is there a problem with my C-phone?  At first I thought it was my telelphone line and called the phone company.  They sent a technician out to replace the lines and check the house, but the hum is still there on the C-phone.

It's driving me batty!

C-phone info regarding phone lines etc.
I am completely clueless on the subject of a C-phone.  Can someone help me understand exactly how this works?  Do you have to specifically have a separate "dial up internet" service to use the C-phone? I currently have cable internet and am wondering if there is anything else I need to get.  I guess I should contact my phone company.  At any rate, any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!
If you use a C-phone for work and have a digital phone

through cable, have you tried to take an incoming call?

We only have one phone line.  I rarely get/make calls and when I do we have cell phones.  I just started working with a C-phone and got digital phone.  I can go a month and my phone not ring, so far have gotten 3 calls today, but I'm afraid that if I try to answer the phone that I will lose my report.

I guess I could pull up a report and have my husband call on his C-phone and test it that way and then if I lose it no biggie.

Anyone use/try C-phone with Medicom's phone service?
Wondering if it works?
C-phone and phone line
I have cable for my Internet so I have my C-phone on my regular home phone line and forward my home phone number to my cell phone.
A c-phone is just a phone, with headphones sm

and a foot pedal.  You call into a number (hopefully 800 number), put in your codes, and a voice file comes on.  You use the headphones and the foot pedal, and transcribe on your computer into a word processing program, then send the finished file back per their directions.

The c-phone is not connected to the internet in any way.  There is no downloading involved.  It is just a phone by means of which you get your voice files.  It needs a phone line and you stay on the line the entire time.

c-phone from cell phone
I believe if you check with your cell phone carrier they have an adapter that you can use to plug into your cell phone from the c-phone. Not sure about this but I think I had a friend tell me she had to do this but it was a year or so ago. Hope this helps.
It connects via phone like, just like a C-phone.

I have an old actual C-phone phone if that is what you mean, (sm)
not the newer kind that connects to a computer.  I don't know if yours is programmed the same, but mine shows 8 to decrease and 9 to increase.  Hope this helps.
C-phone and phone plans....
I have a company that I have recently hired on with that uses c-phones.  At home I have an unlimited long distance plan, but I'm wondering if while traveling there is a plan that you can get in order to use a c-phone in a motel, relative's homes, etc.  I like to be able to still work while traveling and I feel this is going to limit me.  Any suggestions or ideas?
Digital phone/C-phone
Does anyone use a C-phone with digital phone service?  Does this work out okay?
Looking for friend
Hundreds of people are coming into Alabama and Florida away from NO and Mississippi. Go to www.nola.com (Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans) and look for message boards. Local papers and other shelters are posting names. Still waiting to hear about family members from Gautier, Long Beach, and Gulfport, MS. Hope you hear from her soon!
To "a friend"
I wanted to personally thank you for your opinion and also for putting yourself out there for me. The serious physical abuse for me happened mostly while I was pregnant (both times)with his children. He had not touched me in three years until two weeks ago. I am aware that I am in a volatile situation and I am doing something about it. I just needed to reach out today for some comfort and support. I feel I got both. I'm sorry I opened the door for people on here to hurt you. That was not my intention. Thank you and big hugs for paying attention to me. J.
Same here. Have a friend who is
a biller who is the same way. We all work at home and have very little people contact. It makes you a little agoraphobic. I have to run all my errands at once, or I will not do them. All the MTs I know are the same way. Can we get disability for this?LOL
Tell your friend
She can go online and change the settings on her bandwidth from the Vonage site.  We had some problems and found out it was our cable modem.  The strength of the service depends on your internet provider as well.
Is this a friend of yours? nm

not a friend...sm
actually, it's a patient that I did a note on...the doc went into great detail about her home life, her husband, her finances...but it still burns me up ! I'd love, love to talk to her...but guess my prayers will have to do...
think twice about a friend
Rather than worrying about training a newbie, I would think twice about a friend.  I have had friends as IC's whichI have helped to train as well as just newbies.   It is hard to keep that line between friendship and working relationship especially if you are the one giving her the work, checking the work and training her.   Have almost lost two friends over this because they felt because they were friends I would understand their problems, family  problems, time off needed, not getting work back, etc.   They saw me work and bring in the big bucks and wanted to share in it but did not understand how it worked.   You don't produce work, you don't get paid.    I have trained a lot of people and helped out a lot but never again will it be a friend that is actually doing work for me.   If they are working for someone else, I will help them out but just not for me.  So I worry more about it being a friend than a newbie.   Patti
Have a friend who is MT and she has
bought this, paid quite a bit for it. She had used escription before and now she does straight. She has arthritis in her hands and trying to alleviate some of the pain she has with straight but said wasted her money, tried and tried to educate the machine and still not worth the money she spent.
My friend went not once, but twice. sm
My friend went and she loved it.  I lost touch with her the last time she went back.  They did live in a compound and you had to adhere to the religious, traditional ways over there.  When you left the compound you had to wear a burka.  She said they furnished you your own really nice apartment.  I thought about going back then, but with the political climate, I am too afraid.  After all, they are our "allie" (wink), and over 10 of the 911 bombers were from Sauda Arabia our "allie" (wink).
My friend said she
could never do this as she's not disciplined enough. She's honest as it does take discipline.

You get out of it what you put in. Pretty simple!
i have a friend
Who is working for Inscribe, and is very happy there. She says that the people are nice, and there is always enough work. They hire part time, as long as you can commit to 20 hours a week.
very well put my friend.

I have a friend...sm
I have a friend who works at home as a MT for a hospital and her internet is disabled somehow where she can't go on or check email or anything. I was like I don't know what I would do because like you I think the quickest way to find something you aren't sure of is to go on the internet. But the computer she uses to work belongs to the hospital so I guess she can't say anything.
your friend
Gosh, been there, done that, religious beliefs has nothing to do with it, went to one of these hospitals to "heal" and give them my all in terms of experience, etc., willing to take less for the comfort of being in a peaceful place. This was nothing near what I expected; in fact, the worst experience of my life. One of the "supers" was nutty as a fruitcake, slammed doors in people's faces, made people cry, etc., but no one did anything for a whole year about her after I left in tears. The suits rule, but put your complaint in the "Bishop's" hands and see if he has what it takes to walk his talk. I can relate, it was the worst 6 months of my life but somehow evil will not prevail if you have the guts to go forward with what you know she went through, even anonymously, if you have to, then let the chips fall where they may. Hopefully, in God's hands, not yours. So sorry for your friend, I know what she went through. Thanks for sharing and God bless you for caring
re your friend.
this is America. Talk about what you want to. My heart goes out to you all in the loss of your friend. but stand up and don't be a door mat. You cannot be walked on if you don't lay down and let them. I had a mean supvr and it happened to be in a Catholic hospital. I refused to do what i was told (practice forging doctor's names) and it was quite a scene. Once i stood up for what was right, it gave the others courage to do so. i didn't lose my job either. but if you do, you were looking for one when you found this one, right? be strong; set the example and don't follow in your friend's footsteps to the same end. God bless. p.s. Catholics follow the pope first and Christ second. To me, that does not a Chrisian make.
So sorry about your friend
Maybe this is just my personality constantly bucking heads with authority, but I really enjoy working from home. You have a very marketable skill, and there is a lot of work out there for you to do. They do not own you. You rent PART of your life to them when you work. They have no right to work you to death. Would looking for other opportunities, home or otherwise be an option? There is a lot of work out there for experienced MTs.
very well put my friend.
