I don't expect to be paid OT. I need access to jobs during my shift.
I have a line count to meet. If the system goes down or something happens causing me to not be able to have work, for 3 and 1/2 years, I was able to make up time on my day off.
QA, $3000/mo hourly so get some overtime too, bennies paid, no complaints. nm

1st night on 3rd shift and still
but i started at 11 p.m., and notice that my line count for first hour was credited to yesterdays work. so -- is this just a fact of life for 3rd shifters?
night shift
My life currently revolves around babysitting my 15 month old grandson all day, somedays he arrives at 5:30 a.m., others it is 7:00 a.m. stays with me anywhere until 2:00 to 5:00 pm. (his mom is in nursing school with somewhat irregular hours depending on her clinical days). I get on and transcribe from 7:00 p.m. until midnight or sometimes 1:00 a.m. five days a week. I absolutely force myself to take a one hour nap before my shift starts(never more than 1 hour). It helps so much. At first it was hard to do, but it really does help me stay awake and now it is almost natural to do it. Darken the room and keep away from the TV, unplug the phone. Of course, I can't live without caffeine either. Good luck with you new job/new shift
Night Shift
I have a 3 year old and I work late hours, but they seem to work for me. I work for a few hours in the a.m. and then I go back to work after she goes to sleep and work until about 4:00 a.m. I take Friday nights off. I've been doing this for so long it's second nature. I usually sleep from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays my husband lets me sleep in. I also have a soon to be 13 year old and she's very helpful on weekend mornings. Once she goes to pre-school I'll change my work hours.
When Amphion, or any company, has mandatory overtime, they pay overtime pay for it, don't they?
:)
You are right on. There's only so much you can expect to be paid

working night shift.
I recently read an ad about a company hiring MT and giving a sign on bonus to work the graveyard shift. I thought about applying. I did a few graveyard shifts when I was a nurse’s aide though they were not consistent, just here and there. It was rough, but it was easier for me to recover because I did not have kids back then nor the responsibilities I have now.
If I did it consistently, is it easy to adjust? How do you adjust? Do you have to drink a lot of coffee? lol. Is there usually more work available at night then say M-F, 8 to 5.
TIA
you can't honeslty expect to be paid 75k
from at home courses. Let's not even start on the people who have English as a second language who transcribe in other countries. Honestly I think that's why the biz has gone down the crapper. You are delusional to think we are worth that kind of bread.
I would blame it on too many years of night shift, but I have done it

Well! Tonight is the night I start 3rd shift. Any suggestions on how
how to handle sleep deprivation.
I work Tuesday through Saturday on the night shift. sm
I really like the off shifts when no one else wants to work. I get a lot of work at those times, and I don't mind being out having fun when everyone else is at work.
I love the night shift! No interruptions and more work on the system.
I agree with poster below - Power NAPs! I am a napper, need my nap about 30 minutes to 1 hour, before my shift and a pot of coffee sometimes 2 gets me through!
Work Tuesday through Sunday morning on night shift. nm

Been at home for over a year now and I switched to night shift. I work for a national. Started out
working the night shift and sleeping in shifts during the day. My kids are way older but that doesn't mean they don't interrupt me. Besides, there the phone issue, more interruptions, the dogs bothered me a lot, too. Love them dearly but, oh so spoiled. It was taking me 10 hours to do what I can do in 8 on nights, plus I manage to get more sleep, if you can believe that. I still get supper on the table, vacuum, laundry, etc. So far it is working pretty good, so I think I will put in for permanent night hours for awhile. No sense in working 10 when I can work 8.
For QA consulting I'm paid per hour; QA instructing (college) paid salary, QA editing paid per li
I am an IC and work for two different MTSOs as well as instruct at a business college.
IC and overtime sm
It's been awhile but I think to qualify as an IC you are not to be "told" you "have" to work overtime, otherwise you would be an employee. Lots of changes to the rules but IC status is just that, you are self-employed, not their employee. Of course, they could make your life miserable for you, I'm sure, and probably would give preferential treatment later on to those who cooperate with their every whim.
If they are not going to pay you for overtime, the answer is no. nm

Bonuses and overtime
You're very lucky. Do it while it lasts. Once worked for a company that always did that and out of the blue they changed and went on a hiring spree and then not enough work. Would rather work for one like yours.
They will be saving on all overtime, sm
benefit packages such as health insurance, pension, etc., holiday pay, as well as not having worry about vacation coverage and sick time coverage.
Is it worth it to the hospital? I don't know, some seem to do well with outsourcing and others do not. I think it depends on what the standards are of the institution and the people running the department.
In my 25 year experience as an IC and small MTSO, it is my opinion that Community Hospitals are most likely to care more about quality and retaining happy employees. Most of their money comes from endowments and wealthy individual gifts.
Those hospitals eaten up into a Huge Health System are more likely to care about the bottom line only as they are now eating up physician practices, taking them over and making the physicians employees of the health system.
It is difficult for physicians to maintain a private practice because of malpractice insurance rates. So, the health care systems are taking advantage of the situation and getting group rates while taking over the physicians.
Our entire Health System in the USA is going down hill fast. In my opinion, it is a disgrace...
Required overtime
Advice needed! Boss is pushing for us to do overtime, but the last time I worked overtime I got paid LESS than a regular check!!! It all went to taxes, and the way they calculate holidays, etc. So, I told her for this reason, I don't think it's fair for me to work overtime. She said, "Too bad for you, but we are backlogged, and everyone needs to pitch in." I want to be a teamplayer, but working for "free" really gets me down. Especially when I do at least 600 extra lines every day! Please help me handle this tactfully.
I saw HOWIE last night on a late night episode of Blind Date. too funny.
I'm thinking if they are smart they'll boot Rachel. I think she's really smart and a good player. I don't think Howie is all that smart or able to be a winner. I think this could force Howie to hook up with James to go for the final 2.
Dallas/SW office is in overtime. Maybe you
could try to switch offices.
I worked overtime this week...
and I received a 0.05 cpl bonus for all of my lines. Here is the difference between you and I: I work overtime when asked, but I do not act greedy steal lines from my fellow MTs while doing so. Have a great night working overtime and grabbing someone else's lines .
You will need to check your state overtime
laws. In mine (Kentucky) if you work 2 Sundays in a row without a day off, the 2nd Sunday is automatic overtime, no matter if you have 40 hours in for that week or not. Need to check state laws and then with your MTSO. If it is overtime, then they probably would not go for that.
I've been on mandatory overtime for over a week!
Yay! Love overtime.
I can make good money without overtime
I posted below but when I saw your post and it said crap- I type mostly VR and I work 8 hour days 4 days a week. I make at least $160.00 per day- add that up if I worked full 40 hour week or lordy if I worked overtime like years gone by. I get paid no more because of my years of doing this- work for national- the pay is low but I am fast. I just wanted to make about the same as when I worked in the office and set my goals accordingly.
Can a national require full time MTs to work overtime?
?
It's taco night! (again.....) We had taco pizza last night, southwestern chicken soup before th
Maybe I'll just have a salad.
if mt paid 9, editor paid 4 or 5...how can company charge 14 and make it..sm
I know the going rate in our area is 14 cents per line. As MTs most companies here pay us 8 or 9 cents a line. Now add in the Editor rate at 4 or 5 per line..you are paying OUT more than you can charge a line. How would companies stay in biz?
Unless all work is sent by the company overseas at pennies per line, this would not pay for a company.
just curious how this works out
But how much are the US EDs gonna be paid? Typically this work is paid at 2-3 cpl. nm
:+
You don't get paid an hourly rate you get paid by line - sm
so because of how you are paid (not an hourly rate) you don't get OT, especially if you are an IC.
I would move on. I think it is so unfair not to be paid for spaces! I think we should get paid
per keystroke, but that'll never happen. I just think that these national companies are going to keep finding ways to cheat us. I found a job working for a hospital as an employee, paid hourly plus incentive, and they let us expand everything! Somebody's gonna have to kill me to make me give up this job. I will never go back to the national's again.
I feel for you though. I know that for us MTs those good jobs are few and far between and some have little choice but to work for the nationals. I just happened to luck into the job I have now. I just applied at the right time.
Good luck to you whatever you decide.
If those companies paid a fair wage, and paid more
all came out equal, people wouldn't feel the need to try to make up the deficit by going for the good stuff. I actually prefer the harder, juicier reports. But I can't make a living doing only that, because the pay is not commensurate with the difficulty. So even though I prefer not to, sometimes I have to pick up some of the easier, more boring 'line-o-matic' reports just to make ends meet. Tell your MTSO to make it work their while, and MTs will stop taking all the easy work away that you obviously would prefer to keep for yourself.
You wont show UE being paid because it is employer paid -
the employee will never have to pay this.
hit left Shift key 3 times, then right Shift key 3 times -
nm
what then, do you expect us to do? sm
all go out there and open our own service? Some of us don't want the hassle of finding the work, paying the taxes, hiring the people to do the work, etc, etc...I, for one, am very happy working for my national, which happens to be MQ. I certainly couldn't do any better on my own...and have half the headache to boot! For some, a national just "fits", it just does! Sorry if some people can't comprehend that!
what did he expect?
Yup! Good luck to him, he let a whole lot of people down, including himself.
where do you expect them to go exactly?
I mean really, telling a poor city "evacuate" is ridiculous. They have no car, no transportation, no where to go, and half of them probably do not have a television set to know they needed to evacuate. It was probably confusing and paralyzing to them.
What to expect...
Two things.... Responsible grown up 40 something people out for a good time, listening to a major staple of their musical experience as a teenager... AND.... possibly a group of 40 something people who failed to realize that they are no longer teenagers anymore. We went to a Styx concert a few years back and there were so many former 70s teens who had obviously NOT grown up yet. Long hair, foul language, smoking pot. Sheesh.
But, maybe since it's probably an indoor concert, you might get a better class crowd. Expect a WONDERFUL evening! Have fun
I would not expect you to
and there's no way for me to assess what you know. I would really be interested in finding about 10 people who are really looking for ways to improve and let them try this FREE to get feedback. I can tell you this, a few years back I went to work for a local hospital. The "top dog" there was a really sweet girl who had been there for 14 years. In 6 months, my production was higher than hers. My supe asked me to do a little one-hour presentation on shortcuts and I did. Before I worked there, no one even used a shortcut program. It was a stipulation of my taking that job that I could use one. Most people said it really helped them, although one or two "old-timers" said they could type fast enough without it. some people will just resist change whether it could help them or not!!!
more often than you would expect :( - nm
sss
Come on...you can't expect anything other
Actually you could probably expect
Phlebotomy is very desirable as well even in private practices. Good luck! Welcome to the medical field!
What do we expect?
Good old American kids are taught to the test, especially since No Child Left Behind; but even before that there were tests of reading and math skills at the state level. Writing and speaking skills cannot be graded on a Scantron, so they aren't part of the test and increasingly aren't taught. Text messaging ShortHand doesn't help either. They get into medical school - in a class with how many ESL fellow students? How many ESL professors? They get to their residencies - with how many ESL attendings? What medical school has a class for dictation? No, the people seen as the least educated (and paid accordingly) will clean up the mess like they always do. That would be you and me! Lucky for them, we're good at it!
expect a pay cut sm....
health insurance is HSA w/Aetna. If you do straight transcription you'll be ok, if doing speech, I'd look for another job (which is what I'm doing). Flexibility of schedule is really dependent on your super - I've had some who were horrible and like the one I have now, she's wonderful.
What you "should" be paid and what you "are" paid
sadly are two very different things. Good luck on demanding more..because someone else will just come along and take it for what they offer and they know it.
Well, they said I could expect OT immediately..??
We will see on the production. I was told the accounts were overburdened with work and there was a bounty of OT being offered.
We will see.
What do you expect MQ or any MTSO to do?
if they have MTs scheduled to work that don't work their shifts, or that don't produce, their TATs will suffer -- and keeping the client happy is the bottom line to staying in business and keeping you and me employed. So if the work isn't getting done, then they must hire some people that will work. Then of course those slackers will holler when they don't have any. I guess its just the way of the world...
What I expect from my government
When a mandatory evacuation is ordered I expect to be able to get on the hurricane evacuation routes and have enough gas available to get moving. Is this reality........NO.
As far as moving somewhere else, FL has a way of putting a grip on you. Low wages to the point you are stuck literally. I haven't been out of this state in over 7 years due to lack of funds.
Yes, I expect any minute now to
get an email from my supe saying the virus is the reason for the lack of work!
I mean, I have been given every other excuse so I am sure this one will be next...
