Make the sign very simple to read and put it in a very visible area

such as over the doorbell if you have to.

Some younger kids may not be able to read a lengthy sign.

Maybe "NO CANDY HERE" will work.

I know having the porch lights out does not work for my house either but whenever we came across a house with a sign I would have to tell the kids since some of them can't read yet to pass that house up.

why gripe and get all hung up on something that is the way it is and apparently the people complaining do not see any change, disappointed with their lives, money, children, whatever. Life is much too short to just sit back and complain. I have free speech, it is guaranteed and I will use it. I have never in my life seen so much "woe is me" type posters. People find it much easier to sit on their duff and complain about what they perceive their lives to be rather than trying to rectify the situation.
Keep it simple - make it fun
I wouldn't get too much into the nitty gritty, but just give them an idea of what it is about.  Most people don't know that transcription means listening to doctors and typing.  Something simple as that can go a long way. 
Before you sign up for Vonage, read this

I signed up with Vonage a few weeks ago. I have 2 phone lines and signed up both. The verification process was only completed on 1 phone number, but they immediately charged me 49 dollars for both phone numbers. A day or 2 later I received 2 modems in the mail, although 1 modem was supposed to be good for 2 phone lines.


 


When I called Vonage to cancel service on the number I had not verified, they kept me on the line so long I put my little head on the desk and considered an alcoholic beverage.


 


While the quality of the service is great - crisp and clear – the service does not work with dial-in dictation. The dictation continued to play after I raised my foot from the pedal. Also, if I placed my foot back on the pedal immediately after raising it, the dictation would not play, I had to wait a few seconds.


 


I was disconnected 3 times while working. I lost work one of the times and therefore lost that money.


 


When I called to totally cancel service, it was a very long process, but I was told I had to stay on the line to get a verification number or I would not get a refund. It took AGES – or so it seemed.


 

If I had searched mtstars before I signed up, I would not even have called Vonage, as others have noted some of these problems.

Okay - to make it simple, what's your monthly takehome pay?
Mine is $1600/month. Assuming I worked 5 days a week (which I dont... I work 6 to 6-1/2), and 8 hours a day (I dont - I work 10-12), it would be $10 an hour. Where in this country is that a good wage? Working my average week, and my average hours per day, this further drops to about $6/hour. (Again, we're talking take-home, not gross.) I don't base anything on gross pay because I never see a large chunk of it. Part goes for Social Security which I'm sure I'll never receive. Part goes for healthcare, which is often denied and I end up paying out of pocket anyway. Part goes for state & federal taxes. My state is already issuing IOUs, not refunds, and last year they gypped me out of what should've been a $300 refund. The feds? Forget it. Let's not even go there.

So unless you live in some wonderful Utopian town where gas is 20 cents/gal., Cheerios are 85 cents/box, and rent is about $150/month, then spare me the lecture about how far a crappy 8 cpl will go, or even a crappy 9 or 10 cpl.

Oh, and by the way? I aint no 'newbie'. Try 34 years.

and if they didn't and you didn't, then sorry folks, but it's fair game! There are many, many unethical and illegal (in some cases and in some companies) things going on in the transcription industry.

They are cutting costs where ever they can. It makes sense to cut costs. But, human error can occur in a place where lawsuits are allowed. I think we will be a safety net for awhile, until a cap is placed on the amount of awards, anyway. I do EMR also. But, they still do dictation a little bit just so they remember who the patient is and can keep the referring physicians well informed.

I just got an account that I under bidded on. My competition one of the nationls (states with an S) but they wanted the work done close to home. Radiology.

I'm not sure what you are talking about (or if you have the wrong idea of what plastic surgery is ... there is no "plastic" involved). They just remove skin and muscle (along the edges) and tighten up the face. Any cuts are hidden so none of the thin minimal scarring shows.

You just look like a regular person (unless you get a bad surgeon who does something strange) and age the same as the muscle and skin carries on as usual.

Not trying to convince you to do anything. I just don't understand where your concept of the whole thing is coming from.
But I bet that it is visible that work has been done
on your face. Then you do not look so young anymore. Then you get questions like:
'Oh, you look so young, all of a sudden, what did you do to your face?'
A no for me!

Visible black characters (VBC)

As of the recent AHDI/AAMT annual meeting, it appears that the method of line-counting known as VBC (visible black characters) is becoming a trend.


All MTs should read the following report from Perspectives in HIM, February 14, 2007.

To summarize:  counting by VBC results in a 31.5% reduction in line count, compared to the traditional 65-line (with spaces) count.


Thus, to avoid a pay cut, any MT now earning 9 cpl should be raised to 11.8 cpl if line counting is switched to VBC.


This is a critical issue, and it does not appear that AHDI is taking any action to promote fair pay for MTs under VBC compensation plans.


Read between the lines. When a company starts saying work more to make more
and you have to work in assembly-line fashion like an automaton, they are having a cash crunch.  They held out one salary to you to get you to do the job, then they turn around and cut your pay because you make too much.  They don't sound financially stable.  If you've only been on the job 2 months, start looking elsewhere for a more financially stable company.   Send out your resume and see what other companies have to offer and check out references for those companies.  I and a friend in the past have gone part-time with a new company before resigning from the old one in order to make sure the new company is going to be compatible with us. It's hard to do, but it's short-term for only 1 or 2 weeks.

If you do a search for VBC or visible black character there should be some old threads.
I know that some platforms rolled over to this (without warning in some cases). IMO, if they pay by VBC then the line rate should increase accordingly,or pay should be set based on a lower count character line like the companies that already base pay on a 55-character line.

In some cases MTSOs have changed the billing parameters but not the production/pay parameters.

I just read an article about this in the Advance mag I get biweekly.  It seems the MTIA, AHIMA, and the AAMT are endorsing the VBC method of measuring productivity for transcription.  Basically, that means they don't want to pay for spaces.  So they are finding another way of screwing with our money. 


I know there are several services out there that don't pay for spaces now and quite frankly I won't work for a company that doesn't pay for spaces.  I'm a firm believer that transcriptionists should get paid for every single keystroke, but that rarely if ever happens.  Now with those three major industry organizations endorsing not counting spaces, it may be the case that all services will adopt the VBC method and we are all going to lose.


Oh, the AAMT says that the VBC method will create a "level playing field throughout the industry" and allow for a "great opportunity for the industry to engage in a real discussion about the inherent value of transcribing and how pricing under the new defintion should reflect that value."  The AAMT also states that MTSOs should consider an MT's "critical thinking skills and interpretive judgment" when discussing compensation.


Yeah right.  Like MTSOs have been considering anything more than the bottom line and pumping up there pocketbooks.  To them we are machines.  I'm tellin' ya medical transcription is circling the drain.

Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! Then you absolutely must stay where USA has jurisdiction and that is absolutely not in a foreign country.  Those are the rules and laws and everyone knows that up front.  The troops, the FBI, the CIA, the US police do not help you when you get drunk and/or lost in a foreign country.     But you know that don't you?

If you are a good MT, which most of us are, and all of a sudden you start getting a bunch of crap.  I was very happy to be with a company that afforded you the luxury of being an MT, but yet a "hospital employee".  This was a very innovative thing and I jumped on the band wagon.  All the money is in ops, surgeons, they are predictable, macro-friendly, organized, don't flip through the charts and make me the most money.  After being with this company for over 3 months, at my skill level, and only to get cued 10 ops, most of which were rejected and cherry picked, that is a HUGE sign.  I did not tell "them" that is why I quit, they need to figure it out for themselves.  I personally liked the team leader, but she is obviously pooling work out to her favorites, and not giving new MTs a chance - hence they will still "be with the original team", not realizing that people unfortunately get sick, die, move on, and the "original team" will not last forever.  I am so glad to be out of there.  Don't know if new company is going to be any better, have to wait and see.

We do all make choices, but in some instances there are very few choices.  Yes, we should first avail ourselves of education.  Basic education is available to everyone in this country.  After high school, education becomes harder to obtain, but it is available to everyone.  You do have to have either transportation or a computer, and you have to have time to participate, but if you want it bad enough you can find a way.  All that being said, if the company you work for suddenly closes, and there are few jobs available where you live, you can find yourself in a bad situation that you did not create.  I think government assistance is important for people that find themselves in a temporary bad situation, but should not be allowed to be a way of life, except in the case of disability.

It is not your chair, keyboard, et cetera causing you to be so uncomfortable...getting up at least every 2 hours and walking the floors for 5 minutes works wonders in rejuvenating the body back to comfort level. It works for me and I didn't have to spend any more on equipment, hmmmm, not sure about the carpet yet though...LOL

I'm not able to use Express Scribe due to company policy against outside players. The player is the one that is built in to InScribe. The sound quality is excellent, but there's no way to access the player that I can see, except as mentioned above, and those options have been turned off.

if an injection is needed into the arm, for influenza, tetanus, whatever, that could cause soreness, they might look to see which is dominant and inject into the opposite.

If you can't make enough money to even survive as a speech rec editor, then you should choose option C. That is the point.

But, the big nationals, or should I say big globals, are not the only game in town, and if you choose option A and learn how to edit efficiently and improve your production then good for you. Editing and straight transcription require different skill sets some folks just simply cannot make the transition.


Simple explanation
The industry is in tremendous flux, and with so many unstable companies job hopping by transcriptionists is normal. Nobody is nearly organized enough to keep a blacklist. More simple explanation is that every ad generates 1000s of resumes. I once got a reply two months after the fact. Not rude, nor anything to be paranoid about, though certainly not a pleasant experience.

Find someone you can just "unload on" - a sounding board - we can do it if you want. 


Hunker down.


Your first goal should be to GET HIM OUT.  You don't move.  You GET HIM OUT.  You may be able to get legal advice on how to do that from counselors at any abused wife shelters or community police officer.  (of course do that on the sly) 


Find out where you stand legally on getting him out with the least amount of hassle and start getting legitimate CHILD SUPPORT from him.  That means $$ to pay for day care.  None of this 50/50 stuff.  You are giving him an easy way out and you are still going to be in a bind.  DON'T DO IT.


Forget about buying the house.


More AND cheaper ones are on the horizon, trust me.


This way you will still have your "downpayment" that will be growing interest - and it will be tucked away and you will still have your IRA for emergencies.


One thing that bothers me - you said YOU WORK NIGHTS and HE WORKS DAYS.  So he gets to sleep/while the kids are sleeping- at night, right?  But you have to take care of the toddlers all day and try to grab naps, right?  Do you get this uneven picture here?


That's what "working from home" turns out to be - you get to work all night and odd times during the day, but never get to sleep.  Between doing housework, tending babies, dealing with angry men, there is no life.  And MTing is stressful.


Forget the house.


Get him out.


Get childsupport started.  You don't need him there to babysit - he's sleeping while he is "babysitting"!


Save your money.


There, is that a plan? 


All things will fall into place after that.  Who knows, maybe you can be director of medical records instead of MTing at the hospital with your schooling.

Simple solution
Keep the door closed and the cat out! Cats CAN indeed be trained that certain areas are off limits, but nothing works better than a keeping the cat out of the room. Problem solved, yes?
The solution is simple
Report that MT to your boss. If the MT continues then report to your boss again along with your boss's boss. Keep climbing the chain of command until SOMEONE does something about this MT.

Simple -- do the math
Pull up one of your old documents and figure out your gross line count and then divide characters by 70.   See how the totals compare.  Do not know what your margins are in your gross line, if they are longer  with margins at .5 and .5 versus then you could come out ahead but if they are at 1. and 1. then you will be close to even  with an increase of 1.5.   But again would be simple to figure out from one of your old documents.   Just me 2 cents worth.  Patti
I think the answer is simple
some people are just faster typists than others. I had 2 bosses that both typed circles around me and yet I average 130-140 wpm. I think you could have all kinds of macros, etc. and still if your speed is slower, well that says it all.
Very simple procedure
Download your voice files from the email to directory (folder) on your hard drive (usually should create special one just for this) you know you will always use for docking these recordings. Then open ES and click on the Load square at top of program. This will open the directories on your computer. Go find the one where you just downloaded the email recordings to, click on the one you want to bring into ES (one by one or batch). Then click the "load" key at the bottom of that screen and you should see them coming into the ES window. Takes a while for them to install if they're long. It's only complicated the first time!
