Medical transcription used to be a wonderful career, and we were paid like any other skilled professional.  What happened is that more and more companies popped up and became very greedy.  There is no such thing as a medical Transcriptionist anymore, only medical typists, and believe me there is a difference.  When I graduated with my degree in medical transcription, I could qualify to be an LPN if I choose that path.  I had clinicals to pass, terminology to master, and had to serve an internship.   Now, if you can pass a 6-week terminology test, or break the speed of light by typing (meaning not having any idea what it is that it being typed) you can be a "transcriptionist".  When I started out 20+ years ago, I was making in excess of $16.00 per hour, which was excellent money for the time and still is with our economy and the people's poor choice in electing a president.  Because of outsourcing, this profession has ceased to be.  Sadly enough you have a point, when transcription bottoms out, a great many will end up Wal-Mart.
