Looking for a good word expander to go along with MSWord. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Hi all!!!  I am currently using MSWord and would like to purchase a word expander.  I have done some research, but am still not certain which one to buy.  I wish not purchase one that will drain my bank account, but do want one with the capability to have the ability to add an indefinite amount of shortcuts, etc.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!!

things to know on doing tapes from an office?  Is it best just to give them a disk and let them print it out at the office like they want to?

I have several questions: 

1) Deventure Health Partners (who has recently been swallowed by Transcend)--the platform used is eScription, correct? 

2)  If so, can anyome recommend an expander(s) compatible w/both ExText and eScription? 

3)  In Word Client's ExText:  What is an RPC error code 1727? 

Earlier this week, Iv'e gotten it and it's affected my ability to save/access the most recent update/copy of Expander entries. 

My company techs didn't know how to deal with it and referred me to a Dictaphone tech who seemed to know even less. 

He rooted around in my 'puter for the better part of 2 hours and had me log in to WClient to try to access reports ad nauseum.  After saying yes to ESP,  this error code came up and the transcription menu, etc., promptly disappeared. 

I finally took matters into my own hands, saying "No" to ESP on one log in attempt w/the player, etc., loading just fine and I could access reports and ESP entries. 

I logged out and re-logged in, said No, and got in just fine. 

The third time, I said Yes to ESP, got in, and was able to access reports. and get down to work. 

This situation has recurred all week now in betw. work sessions, with my having to say No once or twice before getting into Word Client and accessing ESP and getting to work. 

So, what the heck is this error code about and can it be addressed?  It's been a real bear remembering to copy/back up ESP before I log out after a work session. 

And, I've been screaming bloody murder when I get thrown or freezed out of the system, have to reboot or re-log in only to discover that I've lost my most recent entries.  

If I get an expander system, what are the chances that I'll have the same problems?

My poor daughter has been blessed with very curly, unruly, bushy hair.  She is a target for head lice and used to get them at least 2 or three times every year. We tried cutting her hair off, but it made it worse, because it grows outwards like a big bush. 

I have read up on this subject in detail and have found many things that work, or at least help, as the new generation of head lice seem to be impervious to most treatments.

TREATMENT:

No matter which treatment you do use, wash your child's hair and wrap it in a towel and LEAVE IT WET FOR A FULL 15 MINUTES.  The lice can shut of their breathing for only 15 minutes and then they have to breath again.  After the 15 minutes (set the timer), do the treatment. That way they can no longer breathe without sucking in the treatment.

For younger children either soak the hair in mayonnaise or vegetable oil and put  a rubber bathing cap or plastic grocery bag, tied snugly, on their head and have them leave it on overnight. This suffocates the nasty little bugs.  Wrap the cap or bag with a towel and clip it to avoid leakage of the oil and slippage of the cap or bag..  It's gross, but it works.  My daughter still won't eat mayo. :)

For older children, NIX and ONLY NIX.  No substitutes.  They do not work.  Believe me, I've tried to get out of it cheaper. It's expensive, but it works.  Buy the box with 2 bottles, because you MUST do it again a week later. Nix treatment must be repeated in 7 days after the first treatment.  I always do it in another 7 days afterwards, just to be safe.

Lice comb must be METAL.  Plastic does not do the job. 

MOST IMPORTANT:  Remove all nits from the hair.  The stinky buggers have been reported to live even after 2 treatments. Recheck for nits every single day.  With my daughter's hair, at shoulder length and bushy, it was at least six hours the first time and I picked the nits off daily for weeks. You can also cut off the hair strands to make it quicker. Sunlight works best to see them in, but a good mag lite that you can wear on your head to keep your hands free works just as well after dark. Buy a pair of strong reading glasses at the dollar store for a buck.  That will given you magnification enough to see the nits, as they are hard to see.

HOUSE CLEANING:   Don't just spray, bag everything they have in their room that is cloth. PUT ALL stuffed animals, bedding, pillows, etc. in a trash bag.  Tie it up tight and don't open it for 2 weeks. A favorite blanket or stuffed animal can spend a full hour in the dryer on high if need be.  Vaccum, but if you use vacuum bags, remove the bag EVERY time you vacuum (include the cloth furniture) and tie the vacuum bag up tightly in a trash bag or plastic grocery bag and throw it out of your house. 

PREVENTION:  Buy shampoo that smells like coconuts.  Apparently the buggers don't like the smell. Suave sells one called "Tropical Coconut" for under $2.00.  Hair gel, hair spray and anything else with a strong smell will deter them as well. They don't like sweet smelling sticky hair AND they don't like dirty, greasy hair either.  They like the really clean fluffy stuff.

CHECK, CHECK, CHECK every week through the school year, and don't wait until your child is scratching their head.  If your child's hair is long enough, insist on a tight ponytail during school, preferably sprayed with a good amount of hair spray.

Most important, if your child comes home with lice, REPORT it to the school, daycare, church, camp or wherever.  It isn't your child that is giving other kids lice, it's the other kids that are giving lice to your child and either their parents are too ignorant or embarrassed to report it.

I reported my daughter's first incident, which was very mild, when she was in kindergarten the minute I noticed it. The school did a head check and hundreds of kids were just infested, but nobody had reported it.

I am brand new to this speciality and I am actually really liking it... but I am having trouble finding certain equipment... I was wondering if any of you have any favorite books or websites that have hard to find surgical tools/equipment?

I saw that Stedman's has one out--is that any good?

I use PCShorthand.com and I really like it; not only is the price $89.00 it has everything you will ever want and need for a word expander.  It works with MS Word also.

I'm hoping someone here can straighten out my brain on this subject.  Please bear with the length of this post.

All my other MT jobs have been in-office and I never used an Expander before.  Since I'm now working at home on my own computer, I do use the expander.  I assume I'm using it correctly, but admit I was totally unfamiliar with one.

For instance, I have all headings, phrases common to just about any medical report, names of surgical procedures, names of certain parts of lab tests, routine PE findings, innumerable diagnoses, names of scans and x-rays, etc.  I have them with the first letter of the word (or first letter of the first word in a phrase) capitalized and with the whole word (or phrase) lower case, depending on how I need to use them.

I also have what amounts to near-paragraphs relating to, say, the surgeon's routine "informed consent" or evan a doctor's routine exam on a progress note.  And I have been using my expander religiously and, I thought, with good results, though I continued to struggle to make my required line count each shift.

Then I got to thinking, since I get paid by the 65-character/space line, how am I coming out ahead to get paid for typing "nloc" (4 characters) instead of typing "no loss of consciousness" (24 characters & spaces)?  Am I mistaken that you do not get the character and space count for what the expander inserts in the report, only for the letters you type to get it in there?

I do understand it gets you through a report more quickly and on to another.  But if you have a doctor pawing through the chart all throughout the report or one that hems and haws, how does using your expander benefit you in those cases?

Again, as I have already said, this concept has just been rolling around in my head.  I know all of you wouldn't give up your Expanders for anything and I know all of you aren't wrong about the benefits of using one.  What is wrong with me and mine that my line count usually falls short?

Now, here's the kicker.  Since I've had this thing gnawing away at me, I stopped using my word expander.  No headings, diagnoses, or any other things that I listed above as being in my expander.  I immediately began EXCEEDING my required line count per shift, and not by just a little, with no effort.

So can anyone shed any light on this before I go nuts?  Where am I going wrong here?

I like the Expander that comes with my company's software but I can't find a commercial expander like it.

I am trying ShortHand but the main thing I don't like about it is that it does not recognize when characters entered are part of a preexisting word. So if I'm editing and just entering a letter here and there, Shorthand records those characters, and if I hit the spacebar or punctuation mark and those characters happen to be one of my abbreviations, Shorthand will expand those characters even if I did not want an expansion there. I have to stop the expansion manually. For example, if I'm editing and change the word "proceed" to "proceeding" by adding an "ing," which is also my abbreviation for "inguinal," Shorthand thinks I want "inguinal" there and I end up with "proceedinguinal" unless I notice the expansion ahead of time and stop it manually.

My company's expander does not do this. When I add a character to a word, it recognizes the characters that are already there. So when I add "ing" to "proceed," it recognizes that I intend the "ing" to be part of the already-existing word "proceed" and does not expand the "ing" to "inguinal."

With my company's expander I can also go back and add a character or two to letters that are already there, hit the spacebar, and get the expansion, whereas with Shorthand, if I missed a letter in an abbreviation and go back to correct it, I have to enter the whole abbreviation again from scratch. For example, if I meant to type "tahbso" but I missed the "o" and didn't notice it until proofreading later, I could go back and add the "o" on the end of the already-existing "tahbs," hit the spacebar, and the abbreviation would expand. With Shorthand, I find I have to retype "tahbso" to get it to expand.

I'm not that experienced with Shorthand so maybe there are different settings in it that could avoid the unwanted expansions, but then again maybe not.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if there's an expander that will recognize when characters are already part of a word and when they are not and behave accordingly. Thanks.
