I miss Greensboro. I used to live on Dolley Madison Road.
Before that, on Francis King Street in Guilford College. I loved Greensboro so much. I know where Pleasant Garden is.
NO!!!! except for the portions that didn't get flooded. (nm)
xx
A big reason is because offshore (India, etc.) have flooded Canada & try
to pass themselves off as "Canadians" to get transcription business in the US.  It's really sad because good Canadian MTs ultimately get the shaft.
Basement worker here and hate the 12
steps for my commute! Have a good one!
Aaahh, another basement dweller,,, lol nm

:)

Have office in back of basement, does not have a door it is an alcove-like
room. No noise from the outside at all.
why no, i don't live in snobville. did you think you knew me? i live in heritage hills a suburb
it takes a little longer to get to work and shopping but thank god i have some privacy and am away from the congestion.  lovely trees and lakes all around.  maybe about 20 minutes to a large shopping mall.  but no, i don't even know where snobville is.

I'm in Aylett, just up the road, near Rt. 30 & 360. - sm
Do you work in-house somewhere or at home? I am at home and currently working PT for a local company. Drop me an email...think it is listed with my OP.
idiots on the road

We have the top 6  out of 10 dangerous intersections in our county all within 5 miles of home.  One if my kids go to the mall, one on the way to school, two on the way to their best friends houses and one on the way to the bank/grocery,doctor's..go figure

All 6 have the same main corridor in common, so our township thought they'd get smart and put concrete dividers in to replace what they called "deadman left turn lanes"..ok sounded smart

Now, the state is trying out a new fangled system for our emergency personell that changes all traffic lights to green (fire or police activate it) because..the idiots who installed the concrete barriers made them too high and the fire trucks/ambulances can NOT get over them to get around stopped traffic

I absolutely hated when my kids got wheels because anywhere they were going was through one of these intersections and case in point, I sat at a light in the worst of them all, I could hear the siren and see the lights flashing coming but did the kid with the bass in front of me?..nah and jumped at the light and crammed right into the ambulance that was coming through.  No one really hurt but I have told all of mine that I best NOT get a call about an accident like that one.

Oh and forgot, since the levy did not pass, all the high schoolers will not be bussed, so look for the entrance to school as making the above list

I'm in Upstate NY, Syracuse area and I haven't had any problems with mine either.
working on the road
I use a laptop and an air card from Verizon. Works like a charm!
Working on the road

Shouldn't be a problem, especially if you can dial toll free.  It's also easy if you use online dictation.  We went to Reno and stayed at a hotel for a week last winter and I used the hotel's wireless internet in the room for my work.  Had fun and didn't still worked my 3 hours a day.  I did have to pay a weekly rate for the internet but it was worth it.   Just be sure to bring a long telephone cord.  Have fun!

I also have done transcription, even going down the road.
I use a Verizon broadband which is similar to what ATT offers and it costs the same, around $60 but it pays for itself sometimes when hotels we have been to in Vegas etc.. want to charge $12-14 a day for internet use.  I love being able to go on vacation and still not miss work. Some people think when you go on vacation you should not work, but I do both...I get up early, do some work, and play the rest of the day.

a doctor (neurologist). This is potentially extremely dangerous for drivers and others on the road. You can get a medication called "Provigil" that will keep you alert for the trip.
She's a mess and always has been.
I never understood the attraction to this dumpster-diving looking woman.
WOW! Now that is a mess! sm

It is odd that she wants to tell you what to do with clothing that she "gives" to you.  That is horrible!  In my opinion you did the right thing about telling her that you don't have anymore room in your clothes.  She does know why you are not accepting the clothes anymore.  If that does not make her change her tune then nothing will.  So, I think it is best, even though you two are missing out on a good thing, to have nipped this thing like you did.  You may be losing out now but if it would have kept on and perhaps all of you been at the same place at the same time with your friend wearing "your gifts" then it could have turned out to be sour.  Now the only thing sour is your "friend" that has an abundance of clothes right now.

BTW - what kind of a friend does that to another friend?  Hopefully, no friend of mine...

You are probably going to be really in a mess
if you ever have to explain to the IRS about fees for your animals. How about my 22 pounds cat- can he be my guard cat? If you can charge for guard, then you should be able to take off monthly fees for security monitoring. Hehe
the mess
Janet's right. SR/VR just totally mangles a lot of reports. What sounds perfectly clear and concise to me will be total nonsense in the SR/VR draft version of a report. You need to remove or add punctuation and also capitalization of words on almost every line, sometimes multiple times per line. You have to fix anything that needs to be put into a numbered format. You need to correct headings - add them or delete them. Entire sentences or paragraphs could be missing that the dictator clearly spoke -- I heard it, why did the speech engine miss it? I'm not talking about mushmouth dictators or ESL's. You could have very good dictators that the draft report is just a mess. It is time consuming and frustrating. There are some reports that would be quicker to just type from scratch, but not for 3-1/2 or 4 cents a line!
Pat/Awaiting Road Runner
I hope you get it soon!  I used to dial up, all kind of problems, slow, slow.  Then switched to RR and for over a year now, NADA a problem at all, zilch...it is always here..you will enjoy it

Yes, I work on the road all the time. I have...
I have a TASP (MetroScript) and so I can download my voice files as long as I can get an Internet connection. I even worked while on vacation in another country. It was awesome (well... working on vacation was not so great). We had no problem finding free wireless connections in the US but I did have to dial up when we were in another country. But my TASP handled everything else. I'm actually very happy with them. (www.metroscript.com)
YOU CAN EVEN CRUISE/TAKE ROAD TRIP

I'm leaving again next week on a cruise, and can take the work with me.  As an MTSO, I don't have to transcribe, but could if I needed; just download via ship internet to laptop and type offline, then send back.  I use to move files, answer emails, and JUST IN CASE, have the ability to transcribe should the world fall apart while I'm gone!  Also, if you get an AIRCARD, you CAN download/send files while traveling where phone signal is available.  Life is good with flexibility!!!

Any tips for MTing on the road?
I am packing up my laptop and heading out soon for week away.  Plan to work part of the time from the hotel.  Any tips from those who have done the mobile thing before?  My biggest concern is that I won't be able to take my books and only I have a couple of electronic Stedman's.
MT on the road using C-phone or Lanier? (sm)

Anyone have any suggestions for using a C-phone or Lanier while traveling?  I'm planning a vacation and will stay in a hotel (with separate work space).  I've worked before while traveling with my laptop and transcribed via wav files or a tape transcriber, but never with a C-phone.  I've thought about purchasing a calling card to use the hotel's phone line to dial in; know it'll be expensive.  Any ideas and recommendations on this plan are much appreciated, i.e., calling card, hotel's phone line.

Thanks!

N'Awlins Mess
Well, between opening all the jail doors, and locking in all the poor "projects" seciton inhabitants, the mayor's pretty much taken a pass on re-election.  This goes beyond partisanship well into the range of sheer, corrupt, beaurocratic incompetance.   But the national-level response has been pretty pathetic, as well.  "oooh, we didn't know it would be this bad!"  Well, drive in, look around and use the radios the army gave you, General!   Sheesh.
Clutter - mess
I have five accounts that I receive schedule print outs from that I check off the names and it seems that they pile up weekly.  I cannot find the time to put them into their designated files.   I also have mail, other things all over my desk.   I usually take Saturday morning with a cup or two of coffee and straighten it out and SWEAR that I will keep it that way but the once again by Friday I am in almost the same shamables.  I thought it was only me.  I can find everything, do not lose papers or tapes -- usually -- and for a supposedly paperless profession I sure do generate a lot of paper.   But glad that I am not alone.  Now where is that schedule???
I'm an IC & I can tell you I'd get out of the biz before I'd work for such low pay. No Mess

quick fix when you mess up ? sm
Highlight your upper case text, then hold down the shift key, and press the F3 key. Everything should revert to lower case.
Except that what actually STARTED all this mess - sm
with overseas undercutting was ANY hospital or MTSO doing American business with cheap offshore workers. I know that our cars, clothing, and even our (poison-laced) pet food comes from overseas, and that's bad enough, but this is worse. This is American healthcare, and American ID's and information, and there should be laws against ANY of it going offshore. If Indian workers want to do American MT work, the only way they should be able to do is is by actually living here, and having to pay American prices for their food, rent, and yes - health care.

I could go on and on about all the greed in American companies these days, and not just MT. These guys don't seem to get that you can make tons of money (and maybe even MORE money, in the long run) by being honest and ethical, rather than by being greedy and unscrupulous.
If you don't want to mess around with paying
quarterly, have more withheld from your husband's check as you file jointly. With that and your deductions you should be okay.
Thanks for all the responses! - no mess.

if i were being promised things that weren't being followed through, i'd hit the road. sm
i agree on the decreasing the bonus but maybe they didn't have as productive of a year this year or didn't clear as much in their pocketbooks as they would like, lol. i technically think all companies should give something; after all, a gift is a tax write off anyway. better to give to those busting our tails for them rather than uncle sam. i haven't gotten anything but cards in the last 3 years so i am used to it by now and don't expect it but i would definitely be grateful even for a meal gift card or anything for that matter.
Right now all of our efforts are to get her better and on the road to recovery. What may lie ahead
in terms of lawsuits, etc., will be addressed at a later date.  Her getting better is our #1 priority.  I was just amazed at how the process has been handled so far.  It really is a shame.
Road Runner lately in Upstate NY has been slow. U R not alone.

Hope I don't meet this patient on the road...sm

why yes the quality of air where i live is quite different than where the city people live.
Lots of pollution.  That's why everyone is moving away from the city and areas zoned for multiple housing units and low income housing and trailer parks.  Population is dense and near manufacturing.  So yes, the air is different but millions of people pay a little extra for the quality, the space and privacy afforded to those who move out of polluted crowded areas such as you defend.  There is always a reason why some areas and housing is cheaper than others.  Maybe it is the air and maybe it's something you can't quite put your finger on but you know you would prefer not to live in certain areas.  You know what I mean or are you living in one of those areas?  They tell after awhile you block out the sounds, the smells and get used to the pollution.  I don't know.  I didn't stay long enough to test the theory.  My mental and physical health is way too important to me.
I know they live a long time, so if there is a chance they will out live you - sm
make sure you make provisions for them in your will. I have only had cockatiels and some finches, so don't really know anything about the bigger birds. I love African Grey's but they are very expensive.
My husband doesn't see any mess that is his...

as long as it's his 5 pairs of shoes by the door, his clothing draped over the chair in the dining room and his misc. "stuff" piled on the dining room table (yes, the dining area is also by the front door) then it's invisible to him.  NOW, if it's mine or the kids' stuff anywhere - the house is a "disaster."  I intentionally leave all his stuff wherever he leaves it so that I can point it out to him whenever he starts to complain about the kids' toys in the living room...

This was a major national. You can mess with just about anything...
as long as you have a space bar.
Ditto what Wally said. Don't mess with it.

Young people can have heart problems.

I've been in a panic lately because my left-sided chest has been hurting off and on.  I've had two abnormal EKGs in the past.  I went to the doctor two weeks ago and he blew me off.  I'm in my early 30s, too.  I have high school friends who have had heart attacks and coronary artery grafting or died.  Oh, the doctor just treated me like a hypochondriac again.  I've got kidney problems, too, but they won't even do a urinalysis.  Evidently, none of my symptoms are serious enough to warrant workup or treatment.  Never mind the fact that diagnosed "reflux" was actually a hiatal hernia and diagnosed "constipation" was actually large kidney stones blocking my ureter.

Long story short.  LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.  FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS.  Get thee to a doctor and be persistent, for you, for hubby, for your kids and for your peace of mind.

I was impressed with this. My computer was a mess. nm

We should get paid more just to listen to this mess
You know, the people cut our pay and put us on things that we have to be mind readers most of the time to muddle through. I am doing VR and regular work but I cannot believe how dictators are changing their dictation time after time- on the same sentence. It is a wonder that anything comes out halfway right. Half of the knowledge about this job comes with knowing (or thinking you know) how to change these fricking sentences they dish out to us. On a day like this retirement looks better and better.
of course...you may not get it but you deserve it (small mess)
You mention annual and cost of living raises, what about incentive raises. Anything not in your job description should constitute some type of compensation.

If no money, at least get this on your resume and added to your personnel file, yes?

go for it because if they say no you know where you stand. knowing where you stand can be important. if you do not ask you will never know and you may start feeling resentful.

just my opinion...

they certainly would not let you go or anything, right? perhaps you could ask for a review with your manager (something in writing) and then go for it ?
Yeah, sometimes I catch mess-ups...sm
when I go back through the report, and I say I am glad I proofread. LOL.
Have you seen photos of the tangled mess of
What an incredible MESS. To think that valuable, often sensitive personal information travels through that knotted mess made me nervous even BEFORE the attacks in Mumbai. And now the risk those records face there makes me nauseous. It's a huge U.S. security and/or identity-theft breach just waiting to happen.
Agree wholeheartedly, 100% on this one (No Mess)
xx
Then you are an absolute FOOL. Down the road, you'll wish you were never involved

Makes me think of Beatles Polythene Pam from Abbey Road. nm
Also love Mean Mr. Mustard, sleeps in the park, shaves in the dark trying to save paper. Sleeps in a hole in the road, saves enough to buy some clothes, keeps a five-pound note up his nose, such a dirty old man...dirty old man.
Three months ago I switched to Road Runner voice over IP.
I'm very happy with it. I'm on the phone for hours and haven't had any problems with them as of yet. We'll see what the future brings.
