that there *are* actually MT's out there who are still happy in their jobs and who make good money still in this profession. In truth, I still love the *type* of work that I do; it's the rest of what's going on that I'm sick of as well as the downward trend in pay. What we're commenting on here is the *overall* mood, feel, and status of the industry right now ... and my personal belief is that it's not going to get better.
I say hold true to your dream. If you really want to be an MT keep looking for that company that's going to be a good fit for you. It's going to be hard with you being a newbie, but it's still possible. Don't put all your eggs in this one basket though as some of us have done. Keep a back-up job in another industry so that as things continue to degrade on the MT side you'll have a soft cushion to fall back on. Keep reading the boards with an open and critical mind and decide for yourself if the common challenges that you see MT's as a whole facing are of an ilk that you can tolerate.
I hope this helps.

Softscript- the truth of the matter
Having recently joined SoftScript a few months back, and having 15+ years in MT, working for many different companies, I researched what the boards were saying about ALL the companies I worked, or wanted to work for. I noticed some bad stuff posted about SS. I also saw that most of it was 3 years ago or more. I decided that things change and came over. I like it- they have plenty of work and matched my last line pay. The managers I know and talk to have been cool, at least to me. But I never give anyone trouble either. I work alot, and don't miss much work. I know they are always looking to beef up staff, editors, mentors, etc. Line requirements are low enough to meet easily. They do have a high QA standard, but then who of us doesn't think we're the best out there and can easily get 100% in QA? Should give them a call and apply and find out for yourself. You'll be glad you did! Let me know if you do- I'll get a referral bonus too!
The truth will set you free and the truth is more low level income people w/o education or proper
skills to keep up their home or train their children live in trailer homes and low income housing. If that sets you off, maybe you should not visit these threads or read the posts regarding others viewpoints on trailer parks. They have zoning laws against them in many communities because they draw undesirable people are not particularly pleasing to the community as a whole, bringing property values down. If you have issues with this, seek out the government in various communities and have them change the laws. Fact is fact and you cannot dispute these facts.
The truth stings sometimes and I congratulate MTStars for having the kahoonas to post truth.
Tired of being lied to. I'm a big girl and can handle the truth. Why can't you?
Opened a can of worms, eh? Truth hurts, but it is TRUTH!
8 cpl is about the top out in the US MT industry. If you're making more consider yourself lucky because it just might be snatched away from you at any moment. For the 14 cent per liner, good for you! You went out and got your own accounts. Others should follow your example. As far as the "stupid" MT comment, keep in mind that she was not consistent and **often** had one excuse after another not to work, yet I could see her online and when I would ask her why she was online she would give VERY lame excuses. Also, keep in mind that I also was the one who helped this gal out monetarily to begin with and she took advantage of my generosity. Don't make me out to be the bad gal here just because I own a service. The shoe could easily be on your foot.
So, NEWS FLASH, if you have an MT position that is paying more than 8 cpl, consider it a real blessing and pray that your job isn't outsourced offshore.
Doesn't matter, IF you are not paid an hourly wage, i.e. a set amount no matter - sm
how much or how little you type, say $12.00/hour, you do not get OT. As someone mentioned here, certain jobs are exempt, and as most of us are paid a flat rate of .08 cpl or .09 or .10, whatever it is, that is all we get regardless of how many hours under or over 40 hours we go. If you want OT then go get an in-house job or get a job doing something else.
You don't have to believe, the truth is the truth. I, too, have seen with my own two eyes and ha
years experience as an MT. I say misfortune because MTs with this much experience usually have gigantic egos and feel like they've "seen it all and done it all." They simply don't make mistakes. Not possible, no way. This particular MT became irate with me. She actually threw her 20+ years experience in my face and said "I've been doing this for over 20 years, I think I know what I'm doing!" It was painfully obvious, she did not have a clue. She'd been doing it wrong for 20 years and no one ever told her, so she thought she was right.
I had another MT with 10 years experience call me to scream at me and hung up on me when I tried to explain her errors to her.
The plain truth is, some people can't take criticism whether it be constructive or destructive. They don't like to be wrong or be told their wrong. Egos get in the way. We are all guilty of letting our egos get in the way from time to time, but in this field, you need to be willing to admit you're wrong and you need to be able to accept criticism gracefully and give criticism diplomatically.
As an editor, I encourage MTs to let me know if they disagree with any corrections I've made. I am happy to provide MTs with my reference materials and resources. I am happy to admit when I am wrong and I am happy to say that I make mistakes too. Just don't try to tell me that an MT with 16 years experience can't possibly be making terminology mistakes - she can and probably has in the past and will again in the future.
Thanks, Lisa! (sm)
I was pretty sure it wasn't illegal, since I signed all this paperwork and they did a credit check and everything to issue me the overdraft protection insurance, but it's nice to hear it from someone "in the know". Thanks for the reply!
On a Halloween sugar high, back from Trick or Treating with the kiddos, back to work and hoping I actually get paid for it....
(Sending out about 12 resumes tomorrow....)
Yes, you can Lisa if you look :o]
For instance if you have applied to a smaller company and they've filled the spots, you can offer assistance in the future with a backlog or to cover vacations. Keeps ya' networked, plus gives you some extra cash. If I had anything that I needed help with that is what I would do. I don't see anything wrong with advertising for temp/vacation help. Why not? Sounds like a way to meet quality transcriptionists that you can count on. The other ideas posted here are good, too, but if you need a vacation then you just need a vacation. Taking work on vacation just doesn't seem like much fun to me. I wish more people would network in this fashion, but I think there are people out there that might try to steal your accounts, so you might want to be very careful. JMO. Thankfully, I have not had that happen.
Hi Lisa
I do not think that this is the trend, but have seen a few companies who are doing this. In a way, it makes sense because then you are getting paid for airtime and all the BS like conversations with staff, etc. that you would normally have to listen to and not get paid for. Most folks that I've seen post here on the subject would not do it for less than $1.00 per minute, but it really is about how long it takes you to type it (obviously) and how much your time is worth to you. Since a general figure of how long it takes to type 60 minutes of dictation, from what I've heard and experienced, is about 3-4 hours, at 0.67 cpm that would work out to about 10.05 to 13.40 per hour of typing time. Of course, I've had work that I could fly through, and then I've had work that would take longer than the norm, so like everything in this biz, it all depends. Hope that wasn't TMI, since you asked only about the trend thing :)
I also hope you are not talking about losing the account with the flashdrives, as I know that would be really disappointing after what you have done for them.
Have a great night, and a Happy New Year!
MedQuist - Lisa
With your experience, I would have to say it depends on cpl they are willing to offer you. I know of many companies that are generous in cpl due to the number of years of experience. I agree with earlier posting about it depending on if you get a good supervisor. The raises are not much to be desired, you will have to fight for one in the far, far future. Again, with your experience, don't settle for anything less than what you feel is fair. Worse case scenario, if you don't like the job, move on to another company until you find a job you do like. I don't think anyone can answer this ? for you.
Lisa - subcontractor
There have been people here who would like just a little extra. If you get the account and once you are settled, why don't you put your need on the board. You might find some bites. Some people like to do a little extra. Of course if it is something digital you could even go away from your state. Just a thought. I happen to enjoy helping others when on vacation. It has worked for me in the past as well when I needed a vacation .
I would love to help if I can, Lisa....sm
I love to help newer MTs, because back when I first became an IC, I was so shaky, I had my first two babies at home, my husband was gone most of the time for work, and this ANGEL that I met on another message board happened to see one of my questions and since she lived in my state and my area, and she had been doing MT for many years, we hooked up....she was so wise, and so helpful, and we became really good friends until she had to move to Italy with her husband. Also, if you are doing IC independently, I found so much info from my local SBA (Small Business Administration), they will actually let you know the laws of the state regarding setting up business, tax laws, tips, and they will just mentor you along in growing a business. Anyway, please feel free to e-mail me anytime, I will help if I possibly can! You'll be great!
Lisa - your 1st post was so optimistic....sm
Lisa: Your first post was upbeat and optimistic/positive. Then in walked the panners of MQ.....outside of a few clear realistic posts. Now, this current post of yours saying something to the effect of *now MQ isn't lookin too good* is indicative that you HAVE, indeed, let the panners influence you.
Again, hopefully you'll get a GREAT supervisor....(not a given) - the supervisors can make it or break it for you...hopefully you get one with NO POWER OR EGO problems!! I always said, the day my PS leaves, I'm gone!! *lol* Good luck to you whichever way you choose!
To Lisa - Going Rate in Area
I would try Career Builders and look for on-site MT jobs in your area and see what the hourly rate is and try to figure how many lines you would do in an hour for this account. I'm no expert, but that is probably what I would do. It seems strange to me though that the Nationals pay pretty much the same line rate to their MT's, yet they are all over the US. Will you have to pick-up/drop-off tapes? Do you have to print? If yes to these two questions, bid in the middle to higher range. If it is all digital and you only have to e-mail the reports back to the office, then maybe consider the low to mid range. I'm on the East Coast, and the cpl ranges from 10-15 cpl (65 characters with spaces) or anywhere from $13-17 per hour. I hear though in some other states such as Texas, the going hourly rate is $9-12 per hour, so this would reduce the cpl rate. I guess it would depend on the type of program you are using. I only use Word and the line count built in. I do not have a separate line counter. I hope Patti has ideas, and she very well may. I think she said she's in Oregon, so that would be considered West coast, so I'd be anxious to hear what her opinions are on the average rate. She's pretty knowledgable and from her posts "plays fair". With all that being said, I think either 13 cpl or 15 cpl depending on the program and method of retrieving dictation and sending back reports once they are transcribed. Hope this helps! I tend to get real chatty! Sorry!
I hope it was okay to e-mail you Lisa.

Lisa/MT Student (see mssg)
I don't think you would have to pay to place an ad. See if there is a "Letters to the Editor" section. If not, it might have to be done the way the doctors do it: Their papers are submitted to JAMA for consideration of publication. Even though we MTs are not doctors, it is their work that we are transcribing. And sometimes (if we're lucky) we even get to transcribe those papers that they are submitting for publication! I don't think there is a single doctor or medical professor out there that would want their JAMA submission, book manuscript, etc. transcribed by an ESL MT.
Hi, Lisa. Have you added macros to SM
your Expander yet for many of the common VR changes--such as for backspacing over a comma, adding a period, and capping the first word of the new sentence? How do you drop common words like, say, "she" into a sentence on the run? I hit "k" and in it goes, but I'm off scanning the next line by then and don't actually see it. Do you constantly use your program's function for jumping the cursor to the point of dictation and vice versa (assuming it has one)? This is a big speeder-upper.
And a reality that's hard for some to run into: Editing skills and talents are different than transcribing skills and talents. Reading fast and accurate becomes big. Punctuating fast on the run was always desirable, but it's more significant now as the ability to simply get the letters on paper becomes less so. Are you one of those this work suits or one it doesn't? If yes, keep working on speed. If not, move on sooner rather than later.
Hi, Lisa. Just wondering how the meeting
Hope everything went well!
Hmmm, interesting theory on Lisa. Maybe so, huh?

Lisa B - my rates and a long message
Again, I am from the old school, old way of counting and have had my accounts for many, many years - some 18 years. I do the simplest and easiest for me which is just doing gross lines per Word -- which I know counts the spaces but that is how these accounts were started and when I inherited some of them was told to count top to bottom -- but with that in mind -- I keep my rates a little lower. I am from .11 to 12.5 cpl. The lowest is for my Psych accounts as they give me 3-5 days turn around and we insert a lot of templates. The others are internal medicine, surgery, surgical oncology, Plastic/Hand surgery and Dermatology. I do pick up delivery, print, envelopes, cut apart chart notes but I average $35 to $45 and sometimes over $50 an hour (depends on how many Op's and consults that I have) and cannot see raising my prices. So I am happy and content. My pick up and deliveries take me an hour each day (depending on how much I visit with the office staff and docs) and I usually stop at the store or something but it gets me out of the house and I really do not mind that at all. I figure this into my work day to get my average hourly rate and am still happy with it. I will probably raise my rates at the end of 2007 but it has been two years. So with all of that said -- again it depends on your variables -- pick up and delivery, printing, etc. But for a ballpark figure I would go for 12 cpl for digital and 12.5 to 13 for pick up and delivery knowing that it will take 3 to 6 months to get your average up there while getting to know your docs, etc. I have used Sylcount for another account and to me that was too cumbersome. I tell my accounts the simpler, less time consuming we keep it the more savings I can pass onto you. And yes, they do appreciate me, pay on time, Birthday cards are received, Christmas bonuses received, included in staff parties if I want and the doctors actually talk to me and treat me as a person with a name and joke with me. Nobody can really answer this question for you as only you know what the account entails, your experience and what you want to make. You can always raise in a year or after doing it for a while. Good luck, e-mail me if you need any other additional info. Patti
That's why this is a great Site! Congrats Lisa!
Way to go Lisa
The 1st giveaway had 92 entries with Lisa I. of CA as the winner.
Directly after announcing the first winner, the second hunt began. There is indeed an I FOUND IT message posted and will be awarded over the weekend.
GOOD LUCK!
Lisa, you make a very good point. sm
I guess I should have been a little more specific. If ALL MTs were to go on "strike" and not accept the low wages these MTSO's are offering, they eventually would HAVE to offer a decent wage we can live on. But, the other side of the coin is, if the MTS WOULD STRIKE, then the MTSO's would no doubt just hire those non-U.S. MTs anyway, because that is the reason in the first place they are paying so little. The U.S. MTs have no support, that's for sure. (and I apologize for the misspelling of a word in my previous post.)
N-n-noooooooooooo!!! Not Kev! Did you see how crushed Lisa Tucker looked
because she didn't get the boot? As she walked over to the host, she looked very unhappy. Then as soon as she went by Ryan she put on a weak smile to walk back over to the other contestants. She wants to go home.

Ain't it the truth!!
This is just too much fun!
Yes, that's the truth.... Think about this...
When you play by the rules, work hard, and pay your own way, you are penalized. When you have 4 kids by age 20, never marry, never finish school, and sit on your butt with an occasional ambulation to the mail box for a free check, you get priority over everyone else. Our society REWARDS poor choices an penalizes those who try to play by the rules and do things in the right order.
Isn't that the truth
If you don't give your name, who is going to talk to you in the first place.
Anyone have connections with a nurses UNION who might be interested in taking us on!!!
That is the truth
I know first hand because I was on it, and off it and went what was left for me to do on my account was so bad, I went back on it again. I wanted off again when the letter came out and I was told remember what happened when you went off it the last time, your primary account is worse now, more doctors have been added to the ASR.
The truth is....
We've only been doing modern measurements of temperature and weather for a little over 100 years. If the arrival of Man on earth is only the last few seconds of a 24-hour period of time of the earth's history (figuratively speaking), then 100 years of measuring weather and temperature is nothing more than a nanosecond, if that. And if you do some research there are prior periods of very active hurricaine seasons in the 50s and 60s, and even prior to that. The Atlantic was very quiet from 1970 to 1993 and then a new cycle has begun, reverting back to the pattern of the 50s and 60s. As I said before, the Earth is an ever changing dynamic place where weird things happen, and there isn't always a reason that we can explain or influence.
More truth
Will global warming increase the frequency or intensity of hurricanes in the future?
Just about everyone is now aware of climate change, so when an extreme weather event occurs, it is not unusual for people to ask if it is the result of global warming. Because of the link between higher ocean temperatures and hurricanes, there is speculation that hurricanes will increase in frequency or intensity in a warmer world, with higher wind speeds and greater precipitation. As stated above, the frequency of hurricanes has not increased on average over the long term. However, scientists believe that global warming will result in more intense hurricanes, as increasing sea surface temperatures provide energy for storm intensification. An MIT study published recently in Nature provides the first data analysis indicating that tropical storms are indeed becoming more powerful over time.
Higher ocean temperatures may also influence the tracks of hurricanes, increasing the likelihood of hurricanes tracking through the Caribbean or making landfall on the U.S. east coast. Although his phenomenon is not very well understood, a track of unusually deep and warm water appears to have led Katrina directly to the Gulf Coast when it struck Louisiana and Mississippi.
Was the 2004 hurricane season more active than normal?
The National Hurricane Center predicted that the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season would see above normal tropical storm activity, with 12-15 named storms, 7 reaching hurricane strength. This prediction was close but conservative, as there were 15 named storms and 9 hurricanes. The National Hurricane Center described this number of events as “well above-normal activity.”
The number of hurricanes making landfall in the U.S. (four: Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne) was also above normal. Monetary damages from these events exceeded $40 billion and were concentrated in Florida, which had never before experienced more than three hurricanes in a single season.
How does the 2005 hurricane season compare so far?
The National Hurricane Center has predicted significantly greater activity for 2005, with 18-21 tropical storms and 9-11 hurricanes projected, 5-7 of which are expected to reach category 3 or greater. So far the season is exceeding expectations; as of September 15, the following activity had occurred:
· 15 named tropical storms
· 7 hurricanes
· 3 major hurricanes (Dennis, Emily, Katrina).
· The earliest date on record by which four named tropical storms formed (Arlene,
Bret, Cindy, Dennis formed before July 5)
· The earliest date on record by which 2 category 4 hurricanes occurred (Dennis
formed July 4-7; Emily formed July 10-16))
· The most destructive hurricane in U.S. history (Katrina)
· Almost half the season yet to come
The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season has the potential to be the most active season on record. Bookmark this page to get updated information as the season develops.

Having been a court reporting student, I can tell you any online course would be a complete waste of your time. You definitely need a class to go to each and every day.
Court reporting is exceedingly hard to learn and takes a lot of time. It takes great discipline to learn it and to build up your speed. If you think you can take an online course to become a court reporter, you're only fooling yourself and throwing away good money.
And yes, job prospects are great for court reporters, and the pay is excellent, but you have to be GOOD!
Here's the truth: Although I have met many SM
smart MTs through the years, I have met an equal number of dumb-as-rocks-in-a-box MTs. You know, the ones who can't do anything without specific direction (hit this key and then that key), can't solve even the simplest of problems, etc.

The Estimated IQ's of American Presidents-Fiction!
Summary of eRumor:
This email claims that a think tank in Pennsylvania determined the IQ's of American presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush, rating bush as the lowest and Bill Clinton as the highest.
The Truth:
This was written from the fantasies of someone who adores Bill Clinton and doesn't think much of George W. Bush. The "think tank" is not identified and there is no such service as Bakersville News, a reporter named Jennifer Borenstein, a sociologist named Werner Levenstein, or a psychiatrist named Patricia Williams involved in any such project. Rich Buhler, the founder of TruthOrFiction.com and a former member of the news media says, "Take it from me. This eRumor was not written by anybody who has ever been a professional journalist. The style betrays the hoax as much as the misinformation."
A real example of the story as it has been circulated:
The Intelligence of our Presidents
Bakersville News Service 6-28-01 12:32 PM CST
by Jennifer L. Borenstein
The intelligence of our presidents has never been seriously scrutinized at any time in our history until now. There is a widespread perception that President G. W. Bush is not qualified for the position he holds. That increasing awareness by the people has led to a study of the intellectual ability of all presidents for the past fifty years.
There have been twelve presidents in that time, from F. D. Roosevelt to G. W. Bush. All were rated based on scholarly achievements, writings that they alone wrote, their ability to speak effectively, and a number of psychological factors.
The conclusions of the study, conducted by an independent think tank located in Scranton, Pennsylvania were surprising. This think tank includes high caliber historians, psychiatrists, sociologists, scientists in human behavior, and psychologists. Among their ranks are Dr. Werner Levenstein, world-renowned sociologist, and Professor Patricia A. Williams, a world-respected psychiatrist. All members of the think tank are experts at being able to detect a person's IQ from the criteria stated earlier.
After four months of research, these learned men and women have determined the IQs of each president within a range of five percentage points. The IQs listed below are the norms for each president.
147 Franklin D. Roosevelt (D)
132 Harry Truman (D)
122 Dwight D. Eisenhower (R)
174 John F. Kennedy (D)
126 Lyndon B. Johnson (D)
155 Richard M. Nixon (R)
121 Gerald Ford (R)
175 James E. Carter (D)
105 Ronald Reagan (R)
099 George HW Bush (R)
182 William J. Clinton (D)
091 George W. Bush (R)
The non-partisan researchers who evaluated the twelve presidents determined that the six Republican presidents for the past 50 years had an average IQ of 115.5, with President Nixon having the highest IQ, at 155.
President G. W. Bush was rated the lowest of all the Republicans with an IQ of 91.
The six Democrat presidents had IQs with an average of 156, with President Clinton having the highest IQ, at 182. President Lyndon B. Johnson was rated the lowest of all the Democrats with an IQ of 126. The margin of error is plus or minus five percent.
This study was initiated on February 13, 2001 and completed on June 17, 2001.
This study validated the widespread feeling of people about the sitting president. President Bush was rated low because of his inability to command the English language, his lack of any scholarly achievements, and an absence of anything authored by him that would reflect an intellectual effort.
TRUTH
Just like in transcription, we learn the meanings of words and apply them in our work. TRUTH, the definition, is that which is from God for all people for all time, and his son and his passion is the truth, and the life.
Just tell her the truth!
If you tell her what happened and that you feel very uncomfortable around her husband you will get everything out. Don't just let it go to spare her feelings or your friendship. What is so fun about hanging out with a friend and her husband when you are nervous and appauled the whole time. If she gets mad at you and doesn't believe you, she isn't a friend worth keeping. If she values the fact that you told her the truth, she is a keeper. You also need to confront him. Tell him that he does not deserve a woman such as his wife and that even though she may be blinded, you know what kind of person he really is.
there is truth to this
we got a letter from our company president for MT Week; in it he tells us to take care of ourselves, exercise, watch our weight, eat right. There are many health problems related to not doing this, obesity and bad food choices, and being sedentary lead to diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, problems breathing, back problems, and these are partially responsible for rising healthcare costs. Take care of yourself, people.
Here's the truth--SM
I am not here to train anyone. I expect that since my company has a strict requirement on how much and what type experience an MT has, gives a comprehensive test and talks to the MT that they have certain basic skills.
If you got someone to take your test for you, lied on your resume and bluffed your way through the phone call, that's not my problem. Here is the work--you can do it or you can try to bluff your way through it too.
You said all the same things below in response to my other post. What I've found is that people who have attitudes like yours are usually the people who are guilty of not researching and leaving tons of blanks. When confronted, they bluster and blow smoke about how I get paid to fill in all their hard work, they are just EXCELLENT TRANSCRIPTIONISTS--it's a joke. You know it and I know it.
Here's more truth for YOU ...
the more that you talk, the more that your attitude shows, and the more that MY POINT is made.
truth or not

Truth
is a relative thing. What you are receiving here and most message boards is opinion. This opinion could be sour grapes at a particular company, or the actual truth about working conditions at a company.
There are no guarantees when you take a job in this field or any other. There are bad bosses everywhere and bad co workers. There are also very good ones.
I think sometimes people are looking for someone to tell them that this is the perfect company in all ways. What is good for one is not necessarily good for another. Take the opinions with your other research as you look into a company, but do not rely on them solely.
boy, ain't :) that the truth!!!

Here's the simple math of transcripton versus voice recognition.
If you typed a 100-line report for X amount of dollars,
or you typed in 50% of that 100-line job for half of X amount of dollars.
Seems the same, but it isn't.
Now, imagine that the easy part of the job will be done for you, and the 50% you have to transcribe or fix is the worst of the worst you experience, the slurred words, nonsensical word recognitions you have to take out that you are not paid for . . . . it's no picnic, and remember, your production will drop considerably. Right away, all those large normal expansions you created are obsolete too.
Let me say, . . . . VR is to transcriptionists what digging in trash is to dogs. Slim pickens. You will probably starve trying to make a living out of it.
Isn't That The Truth!
I have been in the MT field a while myself, but I have never seen any of them behave in the manner that happens on these boards. I really do not believe that is what it is here for. I am APPALLED myself that a MODERATOR has to tell grown **professional** women to stop the insults and name calling like they are 5 year olds. We have all been exactly where the newbies and less experienced MTs are (not referring to original poster) and I am so glad I never had anyone talk to me like that. There is a way of saying things to people and I just would not be able to sleep at night being that unkind to someone (Q board is the worst). I love reading informative posts and I really like helping people or sharing information, but sometimes things get so nasty on here that I just will not waste my time on here, reading or posting, and will not participate in mud slinging.
Like I said, you keep your chin up. It will not be easy, but things will come together for you. Good luck and thanks to you guys for cutting her some slack.
