Let your teachers make recommendations, but a basic Singer or Sears machine is fine. nm

Need transcription machine recommendations please
I am an at-home MT and I have been using an Olympus Pearlcorder T1000 for the last several years. I am on my second one - the first one the hinge doesn't work correctly to insert/remove the microcassette tape but the machine still works (but I have to use something to flip/pry the lid open-lol) ! In fact, I am using it now because about a year or more ago I purchased another one (exact same model) as I felt it would be wise to have an extra machine). Anyway, the new one started pulling out the tape out of the microcassettes and won't backup/rewind like it should. It did this a couple months ago and I did the alcohol cleaning with a q-tip and that didn't work, so tried some silicone spray and finally it started working properly again but now I have run into the same problem. I tried all the above mentioned tactics but it didn't work this time. :( I hardly feel it is worth taking it in to have it repaired since they are not a costly machine, and BTW, I have an older Sony business quality transcription machine (around $500 over 10 years ago!) that I had so many problems with and had it in/out of the business machine repair shop several times (so additional $ spent) and still ended up with problems, so that is why I lean now more toward the cheaper models and if I get a couple years use out of them I am happy.
I am just wondering if there are any other machines that you might recommend around the $200 price range that you have had good luck with or should I just buy another Pearlcorder.
TIA.
If it has never been installed on another machine, then you are fine. sm
I have bought OEM software off or Ebay, came with registration numbers never used, and it was fine. I was able to register and access support.
Umm, teachers don't make squat either.
The pay's about the same for a Transcriptionist at the local hospital with bonuses and incentive included as it is for a teacher for the school district. They put in long hours, too. It's not just 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with summers off. They have to grade papers, extracurricular requirements, go to meetings, fill out federal forms, go to training, keep their certification updated, etc.
Sorry, an "MT" should never make such basic mistakes,
FLAME AWAY.
what size package do you have? i have basic and i couldn't make good lines due to speed. nm

I think it's fine; I would just make sure if it's a Jewish doctor

A basic recommendation for a basic expander use plan SM
If you use your Expander mainly to store text for specific doctors and their specific reports you will 1) Find it extremely difficult and expensive to change jobs (critically so, to the point of eventually feeling you can't or even leaving the field when your employer lets you go) and 2) as someone said, find yourself spending a whole lot of time editing your expansions to the current report.
I strongly recommend instead contacting Linda for her system, then day by day developing your expander vocabulary of INDIVIDUAL words and phrases, untied to any specific report. I can take my abbreviation for "denies any fevers, chills, or sweats" (dyfcos) to any of dozens of companies and use it for dictations of thousands of doctors. No having to change it, because I also have one for "denies fever, chills, or sweats," one for "denies having fevers, chills, or sweats," and so on and so on. As Linda says, with a system the individual abbreviations don't have to be memorized. As you can see, these terms are merely the first letters of the words in the phrase(with Y standing in for "any" instead of A because that's my abbreviation for the word "any" itself).
BTW, regarding that last, editing gets very fast when all you have to type to drop in the word "the" here and there as you cruise through is a T, "his" a G, a "that" a V, et cetera. No special reason for those letters for those words, I was just looking for a one-letter abbreviation I could cut them down to to speed up.
Hope this makes sense. Linda will understand what I mean about the extreme importance of developing an independent dictionary of expansions that will work with any dictator.
You will make it just fine. Good Luck my prayers are with you. nm

When they set you up, just make a little chart of what all the Ctl keys do and you'll be fine. Th

Had the Sears cannister...
a few years ago and although it performed okay, the hose split before long and the cost to replace it I thought was extremely high. I wouldn't go that route again. My last vacuum purchase was a Dyson, and I absolutely love it. The suction is just unbeatable in my opinion.
You remember? I have one of those microwaves. Have one of Sears 1st models that DH bought for

Oops... meant search all, not sears all.... too much shopping last weekend!

teachers
I'm also married to an educator. He is a very intelligent man and graduated at the top of his class but chose to teach. It is true that some teachers just go through the motions but "You get what you pay for". Teachers are not treated as professionals and who suffers the most, Our children.
Might want to check out eBay if you're not into JCP or Sears stuff. Can find some good bargains

There are no age requirements for teachers
You are never too old to further your education. I know seniors who take college courses for self-improvement. My daughter will graduate in 9 months to be a teacher and she is 37. Teachers are high in demand. There is such a shortage, but don't go into it just for the money. If you do, you will be a crappy teacher.
I know the teachers mention the
standardized tests they will be taking in the spring, but I don't think it is emphasized as strongly as in your area. A month before they come on strong...
and...once the tests are over the school might as well be because it seems the teachers don't want to do anything after that.
Teachers and their expectations...
Isn't it crazy that the teacher would expect you to buy one of these things for a project? I don't know how much they run, but still...geez! My DD has a lit teacher that always comes up with crazy things to do, which always means something crazy for me to go buy! Feel like telling her if she'll supply it, we'd be happy to comply! Good luck...
Not Singer
Singer stopped making decent machines a decade or so ago. Look into Brother or Pfaff. I agree with talking to the teacher. One thing you will want will be a one-step button hole if at all possible. To tell you the truth, 99.9% of your sewing will be straight and zig-zag of various lengths and widths. You probably won't ever use most of the decorative stitches. Variation in pressor feet will be more important than variation in stitch type. Go to a store where you can sit down and try machines out. Try lots of things. Does changing the bobbin, needles, feet, etc., seem intuitive, or are they hard to deal with? Are the pressor feet nice and steady, can't stand the jiggly ones, it's hard to keep an nice straight line for top stitching with those types. One thing I found on my current machine that drives me nuts (sometimes you just don't know until you take it home and live with it) is the needle always stops on the up position. I'd rather I got to pick. Making tight turns, etc., I like to have the needle hold the fabric while I rotate it, so I'd rather the needle stopped down or up, where ever I commanded it to stop. Sigh.. Anyway, try them out. You will probably end up paying $400 for a decent machine, but you will have it for the next decade or two, maybe more.
Well it really should be the best singer....after all...
Of course he got booted and America got it wrong again! But that is nothing new...look at Carrie, Ruben and Fantasia, not one of them was "the best" singer/performer. America hasn't gotten it right since Kelly Clarkson.
To the singer's Mom (from post below)
Let us know which 3 songs your daughter chooses! And wish her luck for me! Keep us posted on how she does in the contest!!!
With 10 years under her belt and the distinction of one of the top teachers..you'd think she'd
how to handle a couple parents..is she getting tired of that grade?
I grew up in FL, and my black teachers used a lot of these phrases...sm
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet because every northerner I know has asked me about this..."I'm fixin'to" as in, "Get your shoes on, we're fixin' to go to church." 2 of my 5 elementary teachers were black, and they both used this phrase all the time, so it was perfectly normal to us. Those teachers weren't any less educated, they were just native southerners raised in segregated communities. My hometown was still segregated well into the '80s.
It's funny, half the phrases people are naming on here I wouldn't have thought were southern-specific, they're that common to me.
Teachers/tutors new Indian enterprise
National news a couple of weeks ago - kids that need tutors can now get a good deal on an Indian tutor over the internet. During story internet connection went down and class was dismissed.
Ruben Stoddard is a far better singer....nm
I hear they the Education Department Needs 2M teachers by 2015
I think thats a great idea. English teacher... Hmmm.. What are the requirements?
Those credentials for teachers in public school are NOT the norm...
At my daughter's school when she was in 3rd grade she showed me her final spelling test. The list contained the words: You, me, and two, among other similar ones. My daughter was in the gifted program, and those were her final spelling words in preparation for 4th grade!! We do NOT have public school teachers with PhD degrees in anything. They're lucky they have a Bachelor's. I have a Bachelor's and consider myself quite capable of teaching. Believe me - all schools are NOT created equal.
I use a Singer, was about $200 years ago- lots of different stitches -sm
But Singer makes a good sewing machine and has many models, check them out. I am about to drag mine out to make curtains....redoings kids rooms, the curtains they wanted w/ valance would have been around $140...I bought the material for $30 for both kids (curtains and valance), already have a pattern (plus I know how to make them too). So now to find the TIME as I work just about every day, yuk, but for saving $110 I guess I will soon.
Willie Nelson, singer, songwriter...been using...sm
Willie Nelson has been using corn as fuel for all his trucks, cars, and all vehicles on his ranches.

OT: Girl singer on the July 4th shows - did anyone catch this show on the Fourth?
I'm trying to find the name of one of the performers on the evening of the Fourth who sang God Bless the Child (I think it was on the show where the President attended). Does anyone know who that singer was? I missed the first half of her song and they did not announce her name again at the end. I thought it might have been Brandy but I haven't kept up with celebs lately.
Thanks in advance.
She's tiny, cute, rich, famous, drug free, and a great singer.
Oh, what a horrible person! (sarcasm)

Thanks to you all for your recommendations..
Looking for FTP recommendations, please
I want to drop my TASP and switch my doctors over to an FTP or something else that is relatively easy and painless for them to use and learn. I only have a couple of clients and each only transfers 1-2 files per day, but they are not very computer savvy so the easier the better. I would appreciate any information and/or recommendations. Email is provided too. Thanks in advance!
any recommendations?
As an owner, I am afraid to offer an hourly rate. Currently, I have one Editor with her CMT as well as a couple of other degrees behind her name, and it takes her 4 hours to edit about 10 1/2- to 1-page reports. All of my accounts are very easy....no fast-speaking physicians, no ESLs and only 1 or 2 who just plain ramble on.
Any advice on the hourly rate and how many lines per hour I should expect to be edited?
Thanks!
my recommendations
I have always had Dell but am thinking of switching to HP as my neighbor who works on computers all day long says that they are the best ones ever made. He has saved my bottom many times by working on mine. He also says to stay away from Vista. He wants me to buy a bare bones and he will install all the programs and operating system. So that will save me quite a bit. Anyway that is what I am told and since he has been straight with me for the past 6 years will probably believe him this time.
USB hub recommendations?
Does anyone have a brand of USB hub that they can recommend. I currently have a Belkin highspeed hub with 4 outlets. My hub connection keeps dropping from my mouse, keyboard, and foot pedal randomly.
I need a new computer. Any recommendations?
I know exactly what I want as far as features, but I am not sure where to buy it. I don't want a Dell because they offshore so many jobs overseas. I can't decide if I should finance a computer and have it shipped here, or save up the money and pay cash at a local store. I was thinking about buying from Staples or Office Max. WalMart and Sam's Club have good deals, but again with the outsourcing/offshoring thing. Am I just outta luck wanting to buy a U.S. computer? Maybe I should just put it together myself. LOL
any book recommendations? nm
headphone recommendations?
I am currently using the Koss Plug. I like how they block the noise but the design of them is hurting my right ear a bit, and I have not been able to adjust the bass well enough on my pc to fix the sound to my liking.
Can anyone recommend a decent pair of headphones for under $70, or preferably under $50? The $20 price tag on the Koss Plugs was great, especially since many people seem to like them - I will definitely keep them, but I just cannot use them 40 hours a week long term - ouch! In the meantime, I will keep fiddling with how I put them in to see if I can relieve some of the discomfort.
Thanks!
I would like some chair recommendations too...
I am having the same problem, and I know a chair would help. The one I am using needs to be replaced. I am fortunate though that I can go through my husband's work to get a chair for about half price. I just have no idea which one to get yet.
Hope you get to feeling better! :)
Chair recommendations
My old chair needs to be replaced. I can't seem to find the same one to replace it. I guess the manufacturer doesn't make it anymore. So I'm in the market for a new one. Anyone want to recommend a great chair?
Recommendations on schools
I am looking at the online schools and am getting overwhelmed. Can anyone tell me your thoughts on the best schools for training and support? I have looked at VLC, Career Steps, Allied, MTec, and Andrews plus a few others, one offered by IHA as well. They all seem ok......some offer more actual transcribing hours, not as much text material, tuitions vary vastly, and they all seem to follow the recommended critera.
TASP recommendations?
Anyone use a TASP (transcription application service provider) they can recommend? I'm thinking about trying MetroScript. Any input on this company or others would be appreciated.
Laptop Recommendations
I highly recommend you look at geeks.com and see what they have. Also, another option is the dell outlet (outlet.dell.com) they have refubs, off lease, scratch and dent (not so recommended) and "unopened returns" all of which are a few hundred bux less than a similar new machine.
I would like recommendations on keyboards
My ancient and well loved keyboard gave up the ghost a while back. This one is not making me any money. I am looking for a keyboard with a light touch and a little more space. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA
