Kids certainly not the reason for me, I loved the field of medicine

In Reply to: WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO TRANSCRIPTION - Tired MT
I had started working in hospital settings about 10 years before I ever knew about transcribing. Working at a hospital in another section my boss told me since I typed fast she had a friend who worked in MTing at the hospital, they had an opening and you could make extra money the more you typed, the more you could make. Being as my speed was 130-140, thought perfect job for me. I think loving the actual work rather than just doing to stay home is the main reason I have done as long as I have, no burn out for this person.

I see lots of reason people are staying in the field,
about the low wages. If everyone is so happy with the satisfaction MT gives, the flexibility, etc., are these the same people complaining of low pay? It almost sounds like it's okay to make a lousy wage in exchange for what it gives. I still don't think Pattie's question has been addressed: Why complain?
Both my kids (age 22 and 24) found jobs in their related field
to their bachelor's right out of college. Maybe you're living in the wrong part of the country. You have to go where the work is.
JUST to stay HOME with your kids is NO reason to
get into this profession. You sound like one of those many women who think just because they have a computer, can type and put two words together they can be an MT. As I am sure you have discovered, there is so much more to this career than that. I agree the benefits of being available for our children is truly a blessing and when mine were young I was SO thankful to have that flexibility, but to all the newbies out there: Do the research before you delve into this. It is not as easy as some make it out to be. Perhaps you should try running a daycare instead. Or put your children in one part-time until you get comfortable with MTing.
No reason to feel good about it. Just showing that kids are going to get into trouble
So let them learn how to function in society rather than hide them from it.

MT and medicine in general
The greedy guts smelled the ability to MAKE A PROFIT in the field of medicine
and "there went the neighborhood."
It used to be a sign of respect to be a doctor - now they just work for the company store and are running out the door with the nurses at quitting time - throwing any patient they may be seeing to the winds. One even told me to hurry up and make up my mind because she had to go pick up her kids at daycare!
And so has medical transcription - some guy in a tie said QUANTITY OF LINES COULD = MUCHO PROFIT...
Of course those people don't care if a few people die along the way because of errors. - well not at least until it's their leg that's amputated by mistake.
Going into medicine. I have 2 MT friends
who are already in medical school. One MT I worked with at a large hospital is now an anesthesiologist making about $300K a year. Hahaha Should I hope to do so well. Hahaha
Know 1 who is a psychotherapist now. Know 1 who got her MBA and works in government contracting and 1 who got his MS and works for JCAHO.
Lots of things to do out there! It's much easier to decide what you want to do now that you're experienced in life and know what the real investments and rewards are. I'd go on to commercial flight school if I weren't going into medicine. I have a private license. Would LOVE to be Lear certified! Would love to fly a medical helicopter. You can get funding for those flight programs, too! Not a traditional classroom setup. If I don't get into med school, I may be doing that! Hahaha
Internal Medicine
Are they hiring at all right now? Let me know. Am interested in part-time, evenings and weekends.
Unfortunately after paying $140.00 for the medicine (30 days) sm
after two weeks I broke out in hives and had to stop taking it.
"The Language of Medicine" sm
is a very good book and very thorough. I would recommend it highly.
Rehab medicine will include PT, OT, sm
speech therapy, etc.
MT is usually for medicine. Nursing is a different discipline.

Well, after all the doctors are only "Practicing" Medicine, right? nm
.
Perhaps, but there will also be no incentive to go into medicine for US docs, SM
when they get out of med school they have debt, will have to set up a practice, pay their staff, etc. What is the incentive if you can earn a limited income.
I say let the free market decide.
I don’t think he would just out of the blue suggest the medicine
Probably you made mention of having had the cervical cancer and that is where the dialogue started, right? As far as the x-ray, think that is being overplayed with that and fertility. Loads of children, females included, have x-rays when younger and do not lose their ability to have children. You sound like you are stressed out, mentioning this and that, xrays, miscarriages, sterility, etc., etc.
My wonderful MD is having to leave medicine sm
Because she can't afford to practice!!! The compensation for primary care docs SUX. The Blues owe her about $60K she can't collect on care she has already provided. The year I was her MT, her practice paid me $3000, it paid her $2500 FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR. She literally didn't take home a paycheck all year and took the $2500 at the end when she didn't have to pay it out. In the end, that money went to pay a lawyer to try to collect from the Blues.
I have a very complicated medical history and still have many significant problems. The idea of changing doctors right now makes me sick. I won't have any more choice about that than my doctor has about leaving the profession. She is a wonderful doctor and has cared for me for 20 years. I am sick over this.
Muscle relaxants could help also. I am on migraine medicine too but...
if it is caused by your muscles trapping the occipital nerve, injections would help, both diagnostically and therapeutically. They would then know how to proceed with your next step in treatment. The stimulator was a miracle until the lead wires moved. If the injections do not help, it rules out one type of headache and on to the next. I use Cafergot for my migraines with aura (a whole different headache altogether), but that has been discontinued now. I really wish you luck!
OT: Changing face of veterinary medicine (sm)
Is it only me or has veterinary medicine changed quite a bit over the years to resemble care of humans? I have cats and absolutely love them but I'm becoming torn between necessary care, preventive care, and just down-right UN-necessary care. I remember back when animals went to the vet for shots and only when they got sick. If they were sick, diagnosis and prognosis dictated the next level of care. And in most cases back then there were no options other than to let nature take its course if something serious/chronic was found.
I'm now noticing that every time I take one of the cats to the vet's, the doc wants to do "baseline" blood work at least once a year and now wants to see my ten-year-old cat on a twice-yearly basis. My kitty is healthy as a horse and has had no health problems for ten years. Why all of a sudden does he need expensive BASELINE lab work and xrays as well as needing to be seen twice a year and have his teeth cleaned twice a year (not cheap)? It sounds like I'm complaining about the money end versus taking care of my kitty, and I suppose in a sense I am, because this adds up to a whole lot over the course of time. The doc mentioned the reasons for the lab work (diabetes, thyroid problems, anemia, cancer, etc.) I'm torn between having the work done and what I would do if anything chronic showed up on the tests. I love my kitty but don't know if spending lots of money on chronic meds/therapy would be an option when I would have to weigh other expenses against them.
Food/medicine caught in throat
This very thing happened to me while eating pizza one day - I ended up in the ER because I could not get it out or to go down. The ER doc ordered a chest x-ray (do not know why) and then sent me home with some Prilosec saying that I had esophagitis. It was a rainy day - two dogs chased my car home and I was afraid to get out - plus I had my sister's four children that week, besides my own two. I took a Prilosec and then had to have my husband rush to the pharmacy for some Benadryl - I was allergic to the dye - then, and I don't recommend this, I got a long-handled teaspoon - bent it and stuck it down my throat - retrieving the pizza dough. I still had esophagitis because my throat was now inflamed from the pizza and the spoon handle - I put the chewed up dough in a ziploc and returned it to the ER for an explanation - of course they thought I was crazy - but you do what you have to do. I have found that many doctors are either incompetent or on drugs (cocaine, meth, and others that they either sniff or smoke). That is why there is such a high malpractice rate (but that's another story). In fact, I see a doctor now who is a drug-abuser - but he prescribes what me or my family needs when we go to see him and we get well - but boy is he high - nice, though. That's my take on the ibuprofen in your throat.
We come in contact daily with much more true medicine sm
medical problems, diagnoses, treatment, that nurses do. I question my nurse practitioner, constantly, about why she is prescribing certain medications for me. She seems to have a lot less knowledge of these medications than I do. (btw, she resents it).
It is JCAHO. The most misspelled acronym in medicine! nm

Nope. Many years working at the School of Medicine. SM
An MS4 is a med student till June graduation. He's "Mister So-and-So" then in June when he graduates, he's "Doctor So-and-So."
A 4th year resident is something else entirely. He is an R4 (or that's what they call them here). HE is an MD. The MS4 is not an MD.
Normal x-rays, CT scans, nuclear medicine
scans, nuclear medicine procedures and tests, etc. Anything procedure associated with radiology, which can include op reports dictated by the radiology interventionists.
Oh good grief! No way. The only Dixie I know of is a forensic medicine person...
not a former bank manager. Maybe there are 2 of them.
Do little kids like caramel? My big kids won't even eat it! We make the basic Baker's chocolat

I never said you shouldn't have kids! Feeling guilty? I asked WHY you had kids.
You clearly stated in your post that you ship the kids off to camp all day, and they're TIRED AT NIGHT!! You know exactly what you said. You said it as a PERK - AS IN GREAT! They're gone all day, it wears them out, and so I shovel dinner in their mouths and off to bed! You can try to paint it any way you want, but YOU SAID IT. Again, I only hope your kids never hear you speak that way or write that way. Shame on you. Why have kids at all? Just another parent who has them, gets rid of them for day AND night, BRAGS ABOUT IT, and then calls ME wicked! Give me a break! Camp is fine - its WHAT YOU SAID AND YOU KNOW IT. Your own words showed your heart. Period.
Kids are demanding and so is MT work. My question is how CAN you do this with kids, rather than how
When you have two young kids, 11 months apart, (like I stated they are now 4 and 5) and have been doing this since they were born with no help from their father and no family around, YES, the kids get neglected. Part time might work but living on one salary, part time, is not an option. How can you possible tell me that anyone with two young kids can stay at home and work a full-time, 8-hour shift, and still give their kids the attention they NEED. I dont care how good you are at multitasking and how great your organizational skills are. It is a very difficult thing to do. And I am offended by your post making it sound as if it is easy to do.
I do agree that it can depend on how well your kids behave and how well they are able to play on their own. But my kids were not able to play well on their own. They needed constant attention.
So please take the time to realize that there are people out there in different situations than your own.
Reading our posts should help you to understand that everyone has a different situation. I believe everyone should have the right to shares their experiences as it might benefit the original poster in her questions and concerns.
I dont think anyone should be bashed for taking the time out to write about their experiences. I dont usually come on here to argue but you really ticked me off with your post. And try reading the post correctly. I said next time around I would have put them in day care. What I DID do with them was set them up to an activity like art or put on a movie for them. Geez.
Stayed "because of the kids?" I say "leave because of the kids"
You're in no position to buy right now. Keep saving, keep paying down your bills, and for heaven's sake get rid of that dead weight of a BF you're living with. You can do better.
So, should I return the $75 (x2 kids) in music cards I got the kids for x-mas...sm
My son has been telling me about free music sites and I was very leary. How do they skirt the law Radguy?
I don't have kids, but my Mom was from the "old school," and still had everyone, kids inclu
call her by her first name. The little neighbor girl next door from the time she could speak called her Aggie (my mom's first name), and they were great buddies until the day my mom pased away.
I don't think there really is much in a name, but more in the respect you are given and the way you are treated. Personally, I kind of cringe inside when someone calls me Ms. Anything or God forbid, "maam" (makes me feel like Methuselah!) ... I'm always just plain Merrie. :-)
But, as someone pointed out, to each his own. If you want to be addressed a certain way, you have that right, and people should respect that. I'm glad you corrected the child ... hope it "sticks."
Please do not simply give up, kids or no kids!
Talk with a professional. This can be worked through if he really puts forth the effort and you participate. The right counseling can truly make your marriage even better than it was before, if BOTH parties are willing to be honest. Give it a try. Nothing to lose at this point and everything to gain!
Not new to the field either. Been there and seen it. (sm)
However, routing is NOT ALWAYS the only problem. Times when bonuses are out show a vast difference in dictators that are left to type and number sequence of the jobs. There are some who do cherry pick and return these jobs to pool. In a smaller hospital setting this was not so prominent because others could see it, print out a report and show the boss who would address it in one way or another.
Unfortunately, we are such big organizations now and the people in the digital rooms are just worried about keeping TAT that they don't care who does it as long as it gets done.
Then world is not a perfect place and you cannot be pleasant and assume good things will happen always. People do cheat, people do send back reports they don't make good money on.
It certainly is not the company I am distressed about, it is the few (or I assume just a few) little prima donnas who are doing this "me, me, me" thing. You can choose your company, you just can't choose your co-workers.
Until a wand comes down from the Heaven's and casts a Pollyana spell on all of us, I don't think your new attitude idea will work.
are you new to this field or are you just
uninformed? A few months back, the AAMT subject was brought up on this board. One single question was asked: What has the AAMT done to help improve the pay and overall career for the American MT? After days, I don't think there was one, single positive post to that question. Oh, yes for sure, there was a lot of "spin" but not one direct positive answer. Do you know something we don't? If so, could you please share it with us?
I LOVED IT. . . .
And had to forward it to all my "crabby" friends.
I loved my cat too and still do
I had to put my 18-plus year old cat to sleep 2 months ago. She was with me since she was born. She had end-stage renal failure and for a year I had to give her three times weekly infusions of Ringer's. She was actually really healthy right up until the end though and used to boss the other 2 youngsters around. I miss her every day. She went with me back and forth across the country. I know exactgly how you feel.
Welcome to the field!
I've been in the field for about 22 years. Stedmans Words Books are a great resource and easy to use. Google words when you get stuck and best of luck!!! Stay away from Amherst....
I did and loved it - sm
She came every other week and charged $15 and hour. She would spend 4 hours and she was a white tornado in those 4 hours let me tell you. I loved, loved, loved having her.
Unfortunately, i had to let her go when i moved into rehabbers paradise. No sense in paying someone to fight a losing battle until rehabbing is over say in about 10 years :(
We did that too, my 2 loved it too! - nm

My mom loved them and had many of them -nm
throughout the years, so I grew up with them. They are nice, though I put my hair in a pony tail so I can see. Started out with an old Plymouth in the 60s and ended with a 2003 BMW Z4 (very nice). They only time it was a drag was in an unexpected rain storm, though now you just push a button and the top goes back on....until her corvette (1 car before the BMW) we had to do it manually, so stop the car, pull up the top, lock, etc. Also in the summer, very hot seats...carry towels so you don't scald off the skin on the back of your thighs, butt and back, though cloth seats would help with that problem, and obviously don't leave anything in the car you wouldn't mind losing (i.e. stolen or blown away). They are fun though, I hope to get one myself one day but content myself with driving with all the windows down now. Have fun shopping.
TFS! Loved it
I need that laugh!!
another field
I often think about another field as I am tired of transcribing (going on 9 years now) and then there is asking my PS questions and its like pulling teeth to get an answer because honestly I don't think she knows and also not feeling like I'm being pay for what I feel is a hard day's work. So maybe for me something in the beauty industry like esthetician where your also providing a service for people that want to feel good about themselves.
What field? (nm)
.
Loved pet...
I had to put down my Andi (poodle mix dog) today. Last night I came home from church and found her on the door step apparently hurt. Brought her to the vet who kept her over night. I went in this morning but she had multiple fractures and had to be put to sleep. I don't think I will get another pet. It's too hard when you lose them.
yes, i saw and loved the
was wondering if the walking tour is only a group tour or is there a map and written directions so that one could walk the tour alone (or with a friend, etc.).
the MT info is good but i am much more interested in NY and seeing it from an *insider's* point of view. i know that is not the purpose of the blog but maybe you could do something on that line regarding NY??
I used to do these too! Loved them! sm
They were long and kind of boring in my opinion, but I made a LOT of $$ and had a GREAT dictator. he was so great, in fact, that he transitioned into doing his work by voice recognition without a hitch. I truly miss that account . . . :(
Loved this. (nm)
x
Yes, loved it.....sm
Yes, I used it for several years and loved it. It does not have its own expander, but I used InstantText with it quite successfully. I hardly ever hear of it any more. Do you mind sharing what company still uses it?
Loved it
Who still uses this program???? It was great. Does not have its own Expander but I used Instant Text and it worked great!!
Loved it.
Where did you find it? I am thinking to change mine.
LOVED the job!!!!
I worked for this company a while back & loved the job. I say to anyone out there reading the same rubbish I did, use your own judgement about a person/job and don't let bitter faceless people influence you otherwise - and THEY talked about being rude?!!! If I wasn't forced to give up the vet op work (family reasons), I would never have left! New clinics kept opening every year, and the owner always did her best to keep me informed and made my job as easy as possible! Some people prefer to work for large transcription companies, but I prefer to work for smaller companies, where you are recognized as being an indvidual that is an IMPORTANT member of the team.
how best to get into the field
Hello. I am reading the messages about certification, AHDI, AAMT, etc and see that you have a very reasonable message. My sister wants to get into the MT field and I want to help her as much as I can. What would you recommend in today's employment outlook, for her to do to pursue this? I was steering her towards accredited schooling and the RMT or CMT, but after reading this Board, I am now very confused!
