years was wrong. When I questioned it, they explained it to me, but for 20+ yearse no one else had seemed to care. You learn something every day in this business.

that gave you everyone who worked there's IM and then the company who bought them out isn't that way. They don't encourage contacting other MTs working there. Which has not stopped me. I still have managed to get email addresses and then get their IM. It does help tremendously when you are able to talk to others on the same account as you.
When I first started transcribing,
it was most comfortable to put the keyboard on my lap, and I spent much of my time transcribing in that position. I did not require a pillow due to long arms and short upper body. One arm is a little longer, so the keyboard was on a little angle.
Everybody's body is different, so you just have to pay attention to what's happening as you type and adjust your position. It's not bad to have more than one position you use each day. And I can't stress enough the importance of exercising. I know you don't want to take the time, but if you would use little free weights and proper form in a few exercises, moving the weights slowly with no momentum (some of the form I see on The Biggest Loser is not ideal!) you would really help your posture and get rid of the knots before they start getting bigger and pressing on nerves.
There are also chiropractic exercises for your neck that have been around for decades that can really help keep neck pain away. It's where you put your hand on one side of your head and push against the hand for a count of 10, with 10 sets. Then do it on the other 3 sides of your head.
You just need your muscles to be a little stronger to support your arms more comfortably. And with exercising you also learn to detect tension.
Are you squeezing your jaw muscles right now? That's where tension starts. Stretch and relax your jaw. Where are your eyebrows? Raised for no reason? Knit together in a frown? Let go and relax your face.

..but i know that they always need to be covered and people keep getting sick and having operations... holidays too. we are in one of those kind of jobs. i love having time off during the week to get things done though.

She was a real wimp about anything (the kind that screams bloody murder for a stubbed toe and was afraid to do anything for fear of getting hurt). I finally sat her down and talked to her about things that will heal easily. We finally came down to 1 rule in the house that can never be broken: No broken necks. Lots of blood and visible bones will usually heal (comparitively easily), but they must be attended to quickly.

that's how old you had to be to get a worker's permit where I live. I got my license when I turned 16 and my parents gave me a car...mind you it was a very old car...a hand-me-down. But I was happy to have my own car! If I wanted to go places and do things, I had to provide my own gas money and they also made me pay the car insurance (they put me on my own policy). I think it taught me responsibility. No work, no go!

New to all of this and just started working for MDI-FI a month ago. I know I should have asked but..
Does anyone know if MDI-FL pays for holidays or how that works. Do you have to be there 90 days before anything kicks in, if it does at all?? Thanks
I have just recently started working as an editor and I am appalled at what I have seen.
I would be soo embarresed to turn some of this work in. Blanks, fine, I don't mind filling in blanks at all, BUT missed words, wrong words, bad grammar, punctuation errors, etc. etc. etc. that's just plain silly. It is silly to fill in blanks that are clearly heard w/o problem. I get paid by the line as well. Not all QA is paid hourly/salary.
I'm 33, went to AIBT in 1993, started working in Valley
Stayed there for four months, then got layed off because all the dictated reports were going over to this new fabulous thing called "phone line dictation." Got a job at a local secretary office, there for one year. Then went home for MQ for a few years, had some trouble with management, so ended up at the horrid, retched, awful excuse of a company Edix for two years, now back safe, happy and content at MQ. So I started age 23.

My company has recently started sm
assigning jobs by the TAT, not by the work type. Again, maybe you need to refresh yourself on the various specialties/work types. The SUM tapes can really help with that. If you are interested, email me. I bought them on ebay, and can make cheap copies if you like.

I am still working for Spheris just in case, but if this new one doesnt work out I will look elsewhere. Kind of fed up.
I started a new company not long ago, too
and they were detail-oriented. Like you, my transcription was great, but I kept forgetting the little things - how they like their dates formatted, when to add headings, when to expand abbreviations. I printed out the emails with the corrections I got and made myself a cheat sheet to keep beside my computer. I reviewed it before each shift and referred to it frequently while transcribing.
Learning the formatting/account specifics is probably the most difficult part of starting a new job, and I'm sure their QA dept is aware of that. I made it and so will you. Just stick with it and double proofread things. I also doublechecked my demographic information prior to submitting just to be sure. One thing to remember, when in doubt, flag it for QA.

They're great. I couldn't work in my slippers because the bunny heads kept hitting rewind or fast forward.
They can be a bit pricey and I was skeptical, but I found some at a local discount store for $5.00 a pair. My feet are toasty warm and comfy too. 
I have 13 years experience and just started a hospital job working from home making $16 an hour
and with a really good incentive plan. I live in the Kansas City area. $10 seems like a low starting point even with only two years experience which is the usual benchmark for hospital MT jobs.
It's been my experience that the low end of the pay scale for hospital employed MTs was around $12 an hour. Also, it's been my experience that the pay offered is usually based on years of experience and how well you perform on the transcription test.
I would say if their pay is that low, they should at least be making it up with incentive and it doesn't sound like they are.

I just started with a great company that I had to purchase
Docshuttle and waveplayer. I had contact with them throughout the period of waiting for the software to arrive, etc. If you purchased the disk and not just the download, you can return it.
Just started with a company 4 days ago and having same issues!!
VERY frustrating. I am paid hourly while I work, no work=no hours, so I charged them for the hours anyway. I went from a job with too much to do to nothing to do BORING!! They promise it will pick up and I am just keeping my fingers crossed!!
I started work for 1 company this past
year that was really out in the sticks. They had dial-up because they were not close to anything and that was a company!! What I dislike so much about having my DSL is here in Atlanta with Bellsouth you have to have a land phone if you have the DSL. I am hoping with the take over of Bellsouth with AT&T maybe they will give you the fast access without the land. I spend sooo much on something I rarely use but went with another provider here in town and not satisfied with the service so back to MA Bell. I have to have the fastest. I really don’t want to try any others as that switch was sorta nighmarish!!
Not sure, but I started wtih a new company as an IC and they said they were not compatible
with 2007 and that I had to have 2003 or older to use. I think the majority of companies out there are not using the newest version.
Hired by new company and started training today.
Should have trained yesterday, but no one contacted me. So of course, I contacted them. During training today, their foot pedal did not work. When their tech put their software into my computer last week, he said he "fixed it" so that their software would work with my firewall turned on and that my autocorrect would work with their software and I wouldn't have to re-enter 3000 shortcuts. Well, you know the rest. No autocorrect and I cannot access their system with my firewall turned on. Plus I can't work because the foot pedal doesn't function. With all that the MTSOs demand of us, you would think that they should have at least some of their act together, no?
Okay...say Snopes is correct and it's a rumor started by a gas company...
How does the gas company that started the rumor know everyone will flock to them?
I buy my gas from the station that posts the lowest price, and not necessarily twice in a row. I may buy from Kroger, Walmart, or some other company, but they're always selling for several pennies below the big companies.
Just found out that my company is offshoring
However, it is still hush-hush, and evidently people aren't talking. It is a company that has prided itself on never offshoring, and I think employees would be totally shocked if they knew. Is it true that this board does not allow these companies to advertise here, and if so, what is "proof?"

The name of the game is money. If I can't make any money, I will find a company where I can.
I am a good MT. However, I haven't found what I need from a company yet.
I agree that not every MT or company will be a good fit for each other. I just didn't realize that what I was asking for from an employer would be nearly impossible to find. It's not that I'm not willing to give a little either; it seems like the majority of companies that I have come across want you chained to your desk 24/7 with a ring through your nose to tug on. They won't pay downtime but they expect you to check back into the system every 15 minutes without pay. Some people do this without complaining because they feel lucky to have a job working at home. I'm sorry, but I'm not a doormat. We already pay the overhead and equipment costs for the companies. Our benefits and line rates get cut back more and more. The quality of dictation gets worse and worse because of VR and offshoring. I'm a good MT, and I deserve to be treated like one. If standing up for myself means I have a bad attitude, oh well, at least I can sleep at night for not letting anybody walk all over me.
If there is a company out there that let's you type on a blank page, I haven't found it. I
been an MT for 13 years now and worked at home for about 11 of those years and never found a company that I felt truly treated their MT's fair.

Obviously, the changes they want are not "petty" or they wouldn't want them.

I'm new to working for a company (m)
as opposed to for myself where I set my own schedule and TAT. When a company tells you that you work from 9-5, etc. what exactly do they mean? Do you literally have to be at your desk transcribing for those hours? Or once you meet any line count requirements are you done for the day whether you worked 2 hours or 8 hours? I'm just trying to decide what avenue to go. I have a certain amount of freedom that I enjoy right now as in I can work until noon, go on a field trip with one of my kids, and come back and work at 5 and complete my work, etc. Or I can work at 10 at night if I want/need to. I just wonder what to expect from working for a company and would appreciate any insight!

For those of you working for more than one company...
I am looking to move some of my eggs into another basket, if you know what I'm saying... I'm wondering how those of you who work for more than one company juggle the work load. I am talking part-time, IC work here.
The company I work with now is great, but like I said, I would just like to have a little something in my back pocket. They do call me and email me all the time asking if I can pick up this job or that job. What if I'm bogged down with other work?
Do companies look down on IC's that have other companies they work for, or do they kind of expect that?

Working for a company or IC
For those of you who are ICs, have you regreted taking that giant leap of working for a national company versus working as an IC? I know there would days of feast or famine, but at this point I need the flexibility. I am in my late 50s and do not yet qualify for Medicare.
The other problem is too that I will have to buy my own health insurance. Would anyone recommend a good national insurance company for getting medical/surgical benefits for myself and spouce that do not charge a fortunate?
I still get to type hospital dictation since I am an acute-care MT with 29 years exp.
So undecided.

You probably are working for a company that
has oodles of employees working on ASR, right? I work on Escription and probably not as many on my account but it is almost perfect. You cannot teach the computer IF you have lots of people who type in things differently, just will not LEARN. What system do you use and how many working on same acct?
It all depends on the company you are working for. sm
If you are the only recruiter for a company, you are not competing with anyone in the same company, but you are competing with the other companies out there. You have to know the way to sell your company hopefully that your company has something to sell, you have to have strong people skills, be able to administer whatever kind of test is appropriate, and I think it is imperative that you have experience as a medical Transcriptionist as well as a QA specialist. I think both of those positions go along with making a strong recruiter.

or will be working for, it is useless to worry about equipment. Many companies have specific equipment they require. Either they will provide this, or ask you to buy/rent it. It is impossible to buy equipment for a job you do not have. Some companies use transcribers, but most of them use internet platforms, often provided by the company. This platform will determine which pedal you need. Unless you have a lot of money to throw away, get a job first, then be prepared to buy/rent the equipment. MTs that have been working awhile usually have equipment sitting around, but they don't buy it hoping to get a job; it is usually left over from a former job. My advice is save your money until you get a job. Good luck.

Sounds to me like she can't afford the premium thru her employer -- the place I'm leaving in a few days, for my daughter and myself it cost over $300 a month. I guess to some that's reasonable but I have had a very hard time with it. I'd prefer to eat.

If you are working for a company that totals your daily sm
lines for you then I wouldn't worry about keep track of it on word. The characters must be basing it on something else - like no spaces, spaces, 65 characters, no characters...that kind of thing.
I would just look on your company statistic board and keep track of it that way. That way it is not as confusing.
Sounds like total opposite of the company I am working for...
My pay is quite good, rarely talk to my manager, been very flexible with me. Goodness, sure you are talking about the same Medware?

What about benefits? I make 50k a year working for a company
out of my home full time. No gas money, no traveling, no printing, faxing, and I get full benefits. How is making 50000 as an MTSO good money? I really just don't get it!
So, are you working for the same company. I have worked for 2 companies and I have noticed a huge
difference in the lines I got from each company. The accounts were similar. I never ever got what your talking about but I would average 600-700 lph at one company and the other one I was lucky to get 400 lph so then I figured out they didnt pay for spaces, footers, headers etc.. and that does factor into your line counts on that platform.

Oh, I found it really creepy when you said you found the flowers not so skillfully arranged on your
steps, and from your own flower bed. That's what I was worried about, having gone thru some psycho kids myself with my pups. Someone's been in your yard and in your garden and at your door without your knowledge. Its just creepy to me, and I'd still be very, very careful. Especially valid sounded the other MTs warning you about potential fake molestation charges. You just NEVER know nowadays, and these people have already turned on you big time once. Luckily (though I don't believe in luck), you had it on film to save yourself and your puppy. You might not be that lucky next time, and the whole thing just sounds very unstable to me right now. I know you feel sorry for the little girl, but probably the only time I have ever made BAD decisions regarding my life is when I felt sorry for someone, particularly kids. My son even has an evil kid in his life, but one who has a million reasons for sympathy, and I was saying how we should "be bigger" than the situation and invite this kid over to play. Thankfully, I regained my sanity long enough to remember - ever time I have done something like that on a personal basis for someone just because I feel sorry for them AFTER horrible behavior, it has always been a disaster... Be kind, but you don't have to risk your family again. Be kind from a distance. Its sorry she went thru this horrible experience, but YOU didn't cause it, and its not really your problem. But it could be your problem if this kid acts out in your life. Know what I mean?
