Just create a command entry and use a short form that's fast to type. sm

In Reply to: I have an InstantText question about compatibility with Extext Speech - JustAGuess

This will bypass the Extext command. Make sure you put the trailing underscore at the end of your entry so you won't get an extra space from your marker key. Your entry will look like this:

{command}{Alt.}_

You have to create it with the bold command

You need to use the command feature of IT when you make your entry sm
Copy and insert your text into a new IT entry. Now go back thru the entry and each time you want a field to be placed, you have to hit the "command" button on the bottom left of the window. Then hit CTRL+F9 to create a world field (this will make the little bracket thingies when it spits out in Word). When you're all done, hit OK and there you go!
If I recall, there used to be a Short Form Schedule C you could file sm
if you grossed less than $2500.
Make your short form dont to expand to do not.

Phrases appear in alphabetic order by short form.
You can type a few letters and see all phrases in the advisory or you can type a few letters and see a phrase, then a word, then a phrase. It all depends on the alpha order of your short forms so you are not going to get all phrases, then all words.

You can clear the option to sort by short form and use the frequency order instead, but I don't think that's what you want.

how fast you can type, has little to do with how fast you can transcribe
Let's face it, we can only type as fast as the doctors dictate... worse, we can only type as fast as we can *understand* the doctors.  Given someone who slurs or has a heavy accent, someone who clears his throat constantly or shuffles through the paper, given an unfamiliar account or work type, or an area we don't have much experience in and have to look up words, etc., any and all of these things combine to make typing speed not really relative at all.  I personally type 110, but not when I'm transcribing.  I tell most folks who ask, if you type 65-75 wpm, you're solidly in the ballpark for doing medical transcription.
I would think it be depend on the type of form.
x
How fast do you type? I do about 130 wpm.
nm
This job is not about how fast you type, SM

but how smart you type; meaning using lots of macros. There are numerous books on the topic *** to get ideas. It's not about speed.

I agree. It is not how fast you can type, rather
whether what you type is accurate or not. It is better to be slower and better than faster and typing gobbledygook.
There is no way I could type as fast without an expander.
My Expander does about 60% of my keystrokes. I can transcribe a whole sentence or even paragraphs for some of my docs with only a few short keystrokes. There is no way for me to type that fast. I could see if you had a hard time remembering your shortcuts then an expander might slow you down, but my shortcuts are second nature now and I don't even have to think about them. In fact, when I don't use an expander, I still often will type a shortcut and then will have to go back to expand the word when I realize my expander isn't open.
Can you type as fast on a laptop keyboard? nm
//

I'd think 8 hours; depends how fast you type - sm
and how good the quality is of the dictation. If you have to break down multiple people talking I expect it will take you longer than 8 hours.
Can you tell me more about alphagrip, it really looks intersting, can you type fast?
nm
short, can't type with them long and also wear
contacts so long nails are a hazard, not to mention a hygiene issue.
We have a separate work type for Short Stay
Usually the summary looks almost like a DS, but sometimes they start out like an H&P, where they appear to be dictating a combination H&P and DS.
If you like to type (fast), are fascinated by medical field, enjoy working solo, you will be fine.
You may have to go through three jobs (over several years) to get to the big money. Best to chose a specialty which you find intriguing and tends to pay well (surgery, radiology perhaps).
When transcribing "command" or "imperative" form, use verb form or "follow up"
For a long time I would become confused by "discharge instructions" type followup/follow up usage ...

Yes, the patient was to follow up with his doctor ... but was also to make a follow up appointment ...

In my experience, certainly your QA may vary and/or be inconsistent all-on-its-own ... but most of these truncated forms, fit into what I was taught was called "imperative case" and follow up is being used as a VERB ...

[[[ even though there is a reasonable argument to be made that "followup with primary care physician in 2 weeks" refers to an "appointment" which is a noun. ]]]

You can figure out the prevailing "rule of thumb" for your QA ...

Not having to think it through --- priceless.

Prob is then you may get all fast fast fast talkers...not a fair way nm
x
It is not a plural form. It is a possessive form. SM
The man's name was Metzenbaum and he devised this particular instrument.  The correct spelling would be Metzenbaum's.  WITH THE APOSTROPHE.  AAMT BOS is full of crap.
I used Short Keys, not Short hand for Bayscribe, it worked fine.
x
depends how fast the MT is......No one would want to pay me by the hour because I'm fast.
nm
Ditto, short ERs or short OPs....short anything! sm
And I especially don't like long OPs, they are the most boring for me, and the doctors pause a lot cause they have to think more. I just want to be done with it! Next!!! ; )
What is the key command to

I saw it awhile back but can't find it now.

TY here, too. Would I be able to disable that w/ just a key command?
xx
the command to slow down
.
In Extext, is there a keyboard command
to slow down or speed up dictation? I'm trying to retrain myself to keep hands on keyboard, but I keep having to slow down and speed up different dictators. I have the little control open on my desktop, but it seems to require the mouse to change the speed. Is that right?
Any1 know how to run the spellcheck command in WP 5.1?

TIA :-)

You can still use WP 5.1 on Win XP computers. Just go to the command prompt and install it. nm
:
I would contact your highest in command. A medical
record is a legal document and could potentially contain info that would contribute to a life/death situation.   If I were in a position of authority she would be gone yesterday.
Goodness, if you didn't know about the command feature, you really need to
spend some time on the Productivity Talk board for tons of ideas.
I agree we should have a command of the English language...sm
I do. This is from the American Heritage Book of English usage in regard to collective nouns. You see, I also have a degree in English and also taught. I do know the rules for collective nouns.

"Some nouns refer to a group but are singular in form. These nouns are called collective nouns. In American usage, a collective noun takes a singular verb when it refers to the collection considered as a whole."
Long short forms vs short short forms

Carla,

A long short form is usually easier to remember. So I would definitely assign the short forms as suggested by Kelli:
SmithCThead
SmithCTabdomen
etc

In most Expander programs you would opt for a short short form as you have to type the whole short form before you can expand.
In Instant Text you don't have to type the whole short form: you type the first two letters of your long short form and then you can type any of the following letters.
So in this case you would type smcth for the first one, smcta, and you may also type smhead, smabd

This is possible when you use the Instant Text marker key to expand. If you use the space bar to expand, you may be better off assigning the initials as suggested in the second response, as you would not be able to "jump ahead".

Volume Setting Command for Transnet/ExText

Anyone there who knows how to "permanently" set the volume for Transnet/ExText speech?  I know to double-click on the volume icon to raise the volume for "Each Report", but not how to do it "permanently".  I did it once by accident, but with recent upgrades, it wiped it out again.  Anyone?  Thanks!

Last time I checked, even MTs use the English language and we should have a command

of that language and that includes all the rules and regs taught from gradeschool on up.  Now, it's totally up to you if you choose to be an AHDI robot.  I acknowledge that a lot of MTSOs use the BOS as their guideline and if you work for those MTSOs, then you are obligated to follow "their" rules if you want your paycheck, but that does not mean that the rule book is correct.  Quite simply, it is not.  A group of retired MTs got together, had a meeting, and decided to make up a set of rules.  Then they had a really fantastic marketing team that set out to market those rules as the end-all, be-all of medical transcription.  They definitely found a willing audience for the crap they were peddling and they capitalized on it.  I guess that's the American dream -- making a bundle of money of a bunch of suckers willing to pay, no questions asked.

I, however, choose to buck the system.  I'm a noncomformist, I guess.  I earned my bachelor's in English before I decided to become an MT.  I believe it's important to be able to express oneself articulately and intelligently using the written word.  I dislike what texting, email, and chat rooms have done to the English language (witness above post "wannbe MT ur opinions..."!!!!!).

Oh well, that's just me.  I work for a hospital that could care less about the AHDI and its BOS.  In my spare time, I wage my anti-BOS and anti-AHDI campaign in the hopes that MTs will wise up and MTSOs will too.

Set up your tabs first - then use the hanging indent command Ctrl+T

Any Stedman SmartType users? Pros & Cons? Will it retain bold formatting without using DOS command
 DOS commands like ShortHand does?
Well, I know you did, trying to create
LOL
You could probably create your own
if they want you to do that, you need to charge them an initial setup fee because that is timeconsuming and you don't get paid by the hour.

You definitely need to have a sit-down meeting with them to find out what they need. I would *think* the forms could be scanned or at least recreated on your computer, but again, without knowing what they have in mind, it's hard to tell.

My first thought is that it sounds like a real pain, lol, and that they might expect you to do things more THEIR way. You should be the one telling them what you will do, to a certain extent, and negotiate the rest. Look at their preprinted forms and tell them what YOU would like to do with them. They can either agree or negotiate something else, but if they ask you to do anything above your comfort level, charge them extra for that!

One word of caution - if you decide to recreate their forms, be clear that this is ONLY initial setup and make a separate charge for that. Otherwise, they may come to you with every form they want typed up for their office. If you don't mind doing that, at least charge them hourly for any forms as forms usually take far more time than straight typing. :)
Entry-Level MTs

Hello to all!

Can anyone give any advice on where I may be able to go and find an entry-level MT position?  I greatly appreciate all the responses I hope to receive.  Thanks all!

Entry Level MT's
MedQuist hires entry levels with good testing scores. Fax them your resume. Its worth a try. Good luck
data entry

Has anyone done Data Entry jobs from home?  Thanks

this happens to me sometimes if my entry came from an enrich...sm
I would use the search function in the glossary viewer and edit the entry...if you edit it, it should work fine. Or, you can just make a new entry with the same sentence

HTH!
you have to create it as a macro (sm)
hit F3 for help and then M or C to create Macros...
when you follow these instructions, it will create an ALT(whatever). Then, in your docutment, you would do ALT-K or ALT-J, or ALT(whatever you name it)
You can either go to File, New to create your own
dictionary; or you can go to File, Open to open one that you've downloaded. There are tons of free dictionaries out there, but it might be best to make your own with your own shortcut naming technique to be able to remember it better.
Entry level MT's
Hello.................I know all of you are tired of hearing about how hard it is to find a job at entry level.  I have two certificates from two separate programs.  I have been working for a clinic here where I live part time typing clinic notes.  It is only about two hours per day.  I found a lady on this site who said she would hire anybody if she could find somebody willing to work.  I emailed her and she promised to get me started asap.  That was a few months before Christmas and she still hasn't contacted me.  Does anybody know how to get started as entry level.  I truly need the work.  My part time is paying well but two hours a day is not very much.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.................
to create an expander, all you have to do is
highlight the text and hit control insert twice, then name the expansion. It can all be done with the keyboard, too, no mouse if you don't want. Very simple to add on the fly!
entry level
It is very true, I graduated college in 2004 and I am still looking to find a company that will hire me at the entry level.
We are more than data entry BUT...
Yes, they will still need us to copyedit and clean up the voice recognition and offshore "crude" product, but from what I've read on these boards, there's not going to be much money in this for MTs.

I too am thinking of leaving MT for another field. This summer my 15-year-old son got his first summer job as basically an unskilled laborer at minimum wage, and he was making quite a bit more per hour as I ended up getting, turning an Indy 500 ESL's mishmash into a perfect operative report. The day I learned that, I decided to start rethinking my career choices.

By the way, I'm one more experienced MT who finds it mind-boggling that people are still out there debating the merits of the various MT schools out there. Wake up and smell the coffee, people!
You have to create a macro. SM for how I did it.

I assigned my macro to ALT-B, but you can assign any keys you want so long as they are not already in use for another function.

To create a new macro you click:

Tools -> Macros -> Record a new Macro

A window will open up that says:

Macro Name:  In the box type in the name you wish to give your macro. (I simply typed in AltB).

In the middle of the window you will see "Assign Macro to" with two buttons that say "Toolbar"  and "Keyboard".  Click the Keyboard button.

This opens a new window and your cursor will be in the field that says "Press new short cut key".  You will hit the series of keys you want to assign your macro to (in my case it was Alt+B).

Below you should see "Currently assigned to [unassigned}"  If it says it is assigned, you will need to pick other keys to assign your macro to.

Finally, click assign.

Now you are in your document and there will be a little box that has a stop button and pause button.  Every keystroke you make from this point on is recorded and will be assigned to your macro.

Now you want hit Ctrl+F which will bring up the find window and type in a character that you want your cursor to jump to.  I use the asterix (*).  Then click the stop button on the little box.

Then test our your macro.  I have report templates I use that look like this:

CHIEF COMPLAINT:  *

HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS:  *

And every time I hit Alt+B, I jump to the next asterix.

I hope this helps.  It sounds kind of confusing when you are trying to explain how to do it, but once you do it it is really pretty simple.

It isn't that difficult to create your own...

Yes, it will take a bit of time, but you will then have a test that belongs to you.  Any that you might find on the internet are most likely not meant for the use of others.
