It depends on what you define as "good money". sm

I do acute care, part time, no more than 24 hours a week and made 56K for the year.
Everyone's definition of good money is different - I think.

No such thing as "good" money sm
There is money for some - is there any such thing as "bad" money? I was told by a health information "director" with high-level degrees who outsourced 12 million lines per se that we are a "dying breed - dinosaurs" who are going to be obsolete. I wanted to bite her head off. But truthfully, that's how some think of us. So if you are making "good" money, then thank your lucky stars because it may not last. Then you will have to join the ranks of those who are struggling. My past experience is that those who make "good money" don't brag about it. I'm not flaming you, I'm just asking you to have a heart and realize that you have to walk in others' shoes. Sometimes they pinch and some day you may have to wear them. So please calm down and let others speak from their hearts, not their pocketbooks. I used to do a platform in MT on career day at a local college but stopped two years ago because I told the director that I in all honesty could not encourage people to spend two years tuition on a career that may be outsourced and/or obsolete. I really meant that. Nuff said!
Quick question or poll - What does one consider "good money" for weekly bring home income? sm
Would you consider $1000 a week, IC status, working 5 hours a day, 5 days a week "great money"?
What do you make a week and how many hours do you work?
This is for informational purposes only and not to belittle or degrade anyone or boast and put anyone on a soapbox about their income.
Thanks for your help!
Depends on what you think good money is too : )

Depends on what you consider 'decent' money!

"Good" reality TV?
Sounds like an oxymoron to me. There are many things I'd rather do than watch boring TV.
Well, define "normal"? lol
single parent, head of household, own a house, itemize ... around $4800 usually.
"good" days is right sm
At least we had our fingers on the pulse, albeit full of carbon paper. At least we were face to face with our employers or clients. Today who knows where our work is going and who is "editing" it. I have responses from companies such as "received your test results and you will "here" from us. Felt like e-mailing it back to her supervisor, but she WAS the supervisor! Gimme hands-on, face-to-face, we were tired and poor but we knew who we were dealing with!
How do you define a Hero?
WARNING: Tissue alert, rememberance, reflection page.
There is no good place to post this, not comedy, not of true political material, just heros that need a few prayers for them and their family.

I think you have to define Mother's Day for yourself...
to escape from the expectations. I doubt anyone really has that day where they are treated like a queen, but somehow it lurks in us that "that's the way it's supposed to be." In order to be spared this disappointment, why not define mother's day yourself? After some deliberate thought, I decided Mother's Day-- for me-- was going to be about celebrating the fact that I have two kids. I usually will do a picnic lunch for us (if the weather holds) or else we go out for lunch. I tell my husband in advance what I would like (usually some flowers to plant around the house or some slippers and a nightie or something) and then ask him to take the kids shopping so they have an opportunity to learn how to give gifts, and how to give gifts with some ceremony to it too (not just "I didn't get you a card but I could get you one.") My kids are 10 and 14, so hopefully by the time they are in their 20's they will kinda know how to do it! Sorry for your disappointment but instead of expecting them to make your day special, think of how you could make your day special
Define pricey-sm
If you don't mind my asking, what would one treatment cost? Thanks.
Define a line please. sm
I have worked with someone who adds my pay per gross line and pays me $5 per 1000 words, and 1 line equals 14 words. You will need to provide more details on how your pay is calculated because most places pay on a 65 character line.
Define "whining"
You left out a lot there. Just what are your QA people whining about?
And once you have a "good" sample,
SAVE A COPY for yourself in your own samples file.
Define professional
Do you mean somebody that does a report accurately, with proper attention to detail, creating a report that serves as a helpful adjunct to patient care? Guess what, cupcake? Locking someone in a chamber of solitude does not guarantee that. Since we became predominantly home employees, the only way to judge our work is based on the finished product, and if you're good, you can do that anywhere.
Define reasonable
I've gotten all of my equipment from Transcriptiongear.com and have never had problems with the quality. Reasonable depends on your definition, though. I never thought their prices were outrageous.
I found a website that may help define IC
I am searching myself for a clear definition, but I did find this site. I wonder if there are other sites that specifically state what an independent contractor really is especially in this field.

YOU ARE RIGHT - But define "trade secrets."

Oh, and $10 an hour is considered a "good" wage here.

Tired of SS, any "good" places to work
I know there are many messages on the subject, but am getting tired of putting up with SS bull and would like to know of for.
I will have 1 year of experience in March. I'm tired of my line counts never adding up and the differences in the way QA corrects things so I never know which way I'm supposed to do things. It never fails that I can be making 100% on most everything I do, but when it comes audit time they can find things that bring my audit score to 1 or 2 percentage points below the required 98%.
If there is a company out there that does not require weekends I would love to know as I don't have anybody to watch my 4 and 5 year olds every other weekend.
I'm sorry, I know this is not a grammatically correct message as I am very upset and just want out. The only problem is that I have nowhere to go once I do get out so I need a new job first.
Thank you in advance for all of your help.
Tired of SS, any "good" places to work
SS = SoftScript - The main company anyone wants to "RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM" .... No kidding on this one - been there, done that!
As far as another position have you tried searching on Monster.com or going to any of the Transcription Services web sites? I believe most services now request you work one weekend day; however, it never hurts to explain your situation and one never knows they may make "special arrangements" with you. Never be afraid to ask!
Happy Hunting,
I would just expect a "Good job and we appreciate all the hard work you did for us over the

What makes a company "good" to work for?
In reading some posts below, I came across one that peaked my curiosity. She stated that she has not seen anybody post the name of a high-paying or good company to work for, so this made me think. I am an IC and have a job but am afraid of losing it as I just lost one account. So my question is I am completely new to the "big company" scene. If people are unwilling to divulge who they like working for (for whatever reason), how does one go about researching on what will be worth it or not?
Just curious
need help fast! Is 8 per 65 character line a "good' rate for an
MT with 10 years of exp? Was offered a position yesterday with a company and right now I make 9.25 - I know I will be losing, but right now I am on DQS and am so sloooowww.. What would you do? Not take it/ Tell them it's just too low? What?!
Sense of humor, tells you "good job!" on the hard ones... nm
I thought so do, hubby wanted me to define a cycle so he could use that Rx! nm

Oh, I totally agree, but go up to the "Good Morning" post. I'd rather have your input.

Well, you have to define what makes you happy. I personally don't want to be chained to a chair a
so that is the reason I won't take the hospital MT job locally they phoned me about with all the perks and bennies, ability to work from home, etc. They wanted in writing that I would either work 8-5, 7-3, etc. I just can't and won't do that right now, so thus I pay the price of not making as much because of the flexibility my job with MQ has to offer me!
Don't forget the "good Mayor" who did not follow standard emergency procedures
But he sure is quick to throw blame on everyone else.
Make money? I'm not making any money because of my decision. You read my reasoning
You can agree with me or not, but don't make false assumptions please.
You're working to make money, not to spend money.
These people should be ashamed of themselves taking advantage of people this way!
I also blew some money signing up with Quixtar... The only way to make any money is to bug everyone
you know into signing up. I felt like a snake oil huckster. I hated it. I was flushing money down the toilet from the moment I handed over my money.
RUN, do not walk away! I do an entirely different side business now that I really love (in addition to my MTing, which I also love!) Find something you're good at and that you truly love doing. Then make a business out of it. That's the best way to have a side business. Selling discount toilet paper through Amway/Quixtar? Not so much.
The CMT exam is overrated. Don't waste your time & money. Use that money on
paid anymore just because you have it. There are a few CMT cheerleaders that post to people like you but they are pretty well sucked up into that association.
Yeah, money, that's it. I paid $20.00 for my dog. Money is NOT THE ISSUE
walk him daily, play ball daily, he sleeps in my office daily while I work. Yeah, I got a lot of money, NOT HARDLY. And, my dog is HORRIBLY HORRIBLY ABUSED because he wears a collar around his neck. It's people like you that make me sick. I am done defending my use of the shock collar. I am going to continue with it and my dog will continue to be pampered , educated, fed, kept warm, and love me for everything that I do for him even when I remind him that his barking needs to stop. So, with that said, I will not respond to any more of your CRAP in reference to the shock collar.
How do they define a word? Is it characters? Is it the MS Word definition
of a word? You can fit approximately 500 words on one page of typing. It's about $.055 per line, or $2.75 per page. It's up to you. It's not great, but you are a newbie. If you don't have any other offers out there, try it for a while to gain some experience.
Money is money and most people will do whatever it takes when in need. sm
if you do bring it to the attn of the office manager, why not offer her a raise to compensate. it is obvious she just needs or wants more money than your office is paying her. I agree, it is a free country and although it seems odd, unless you had it outlined in contract, she can work for whomever or whereever she pleases on the side. at least she is typing and not at a strip joint, lol. I see no conflict of interest, she has experience obviously in whichever field you are in and what is wrong with doing extra in that field. i agree with MYOB "nicely" and concentrate on your reports than looking at older reports and seeing who they are typed by.
No need to wonder..It always means less money for the MT and more money for MQ.

Money, honey, money!!!!!!.

One year and you make decent money? What is decent money to you?

depends
I have one female who sounds as if she has cotton stuffed up her nose and she has just returned from the local pub. Instead of correcting, she just rambles and you have to figure it out. For example: "Social history is significant for review of systems noncontributory and mother with diabetes. Pt has never had this before."
I do find the female ESLs easier than the male ESLs however.
depends on where oh where you are now. nm
nm
It depends - please SM
I'm not sure what you were hired to do but I've always had the worktypes I was hired to do specifically outlined to me. As well, different accounts have different workpools containing specific worktypes. I know when I work on a specific workpool that I will only get certain worktypes; when they ask me to change workpools, the worktypes will change.
It SHOULD work so that you know the variety of worktypes you will get and you should be masked to get them. However, a great part of the time there are cherrypickers who will reject worktypes they do not want to do, dictators they do not want to do until they find a report that they want. Lots of cherrypickers don't like ESLs, so they throw them back.
Depends...
Is that with or without spaces? Is that full audio, read-throughs, or blanks only? Are the MTs experienced or newbies? Are the MTs Indian or domestic? Will you be required to provide feedback for each document or each MT?
If your offer is 5 cents without spaces and you are editing inexperienced or offshore MTs and providing feedback for each document, then 5 cents is too low. If, on the other hand, you were offered 5 cents WITH spaces, are editing experienced MTs, filling in blanks and providing little to no feedback, then 5 cents is fair.
ALWAYS ask these questions ahead of time. Editing on a production basis is no different than transcribing on a production basis--every little detail will affect your paycheck.
It all depends on what they say
constitutes a line. If it is 65 characters includes, spaces, headers, footers then that is decent. Being a newbie you are probably looking at the 8 cpl. Keep in mind if this is an IC position you will be responsible for paying all taxes, no benefits. If it is an employee position it is a good rate of pay these days.
it all depends upon
which of my cats is looking for attention.
Otherwise ... around 90 minutes, I suppose. It's up to my fingers.
Well, that depends on you
My golly, you gals make it difficult for a man to sit still here. All these questions and you gals want answers.
It truly depends upon you as an individual what you make. I usually have a very personal interview with you and usually can let you know at that time. Would you like to schedule something?
We always look to hire, even if you are new to this profession.
If you would like to schedule an interview, call me at 1-800-BIG-DING
Depends on which it is. nm

depends on where you are
We have a store called Freds in the midwest and I found the exact same bedspread and curtains Penney's wanted (at a price of 300.00) for 70! I also use www.brylanehome.com
At times Big Lots will have good stuff as well.
Depends.
Better buy a box or learn to hold it.

I taught myself html and have my site through avahost. They are incredibly cheap. I have thousands of pages on mine due to it being a geneaology site. You could contact them about your files and such. It can be expensive to build a website, generally 1000 and up, so that is why I taught myself.
