The sad part about being a newbie is all the hype the MT schools throw at you about "You can work at home! You can make $40,000 a year!, blah, blah, blah!"
I have a niece going through the same thing. She paid for school, graduated with top honors and couldn't find a thing for months.
What a lot of the MT schools don't tell you is about the real world. The big companies are looking for turnaround time and making money. "Newbies" (and by the way I hate that word) are a risk.
I just started working at home after 15 years in the medical field, but had to start as a receptionist after spending 8 years as a legal secretary/paralegal. It didn't take long for the docs to realize that I could spell and I could type and I offered to try and type their reports. With a lot of help from the docs I found I loved doing MT. I took on a part-time MT at home job at nights 1 1/2 years ago for a local person, took a medical terminology class and then took the "plunge."
So anyway, (sorry to go on so long), my advice to you is to try to find something locally, if you can, even just signing patients in at a local hospital part time and offer your MT knowledge and typing ability to human resources. Once you have even 6 months of experience, I'm sure you will be taken more seriously.
My niece did eventually find part time work and is working at home, but she's getting paid 5 cents a line.
Best of luck to you.

It's rough out here sometimes. But just because you sm
left a lot of blanks in one report doesn't mean you don't have a chance at a job. The company may have tiers they are testing for, or may be checking to see if you would guess. Keep plugging, and something will turn up. Experienced workers are always needed. You'll find your place. Best of luck to you. (PS: Treat yourself to something inexpensive but nice; you deserve it and it will keep your spirits up.)
I hate to say it, but it's rough. sm
My niece graduated from MT school early, top of her class, high honors. She thought she was all set, but couldn't find anything. No one would hire her without experience. She's still looking and I think she found a small account somewhere with an outrageous pay rate of around 5 cents a line.
It's unfortunate that these schools make it look like it's so easy.
I'm not saying don't go for it if that's what you want to do, but it sometimes takes years before you start making any money.
Good luck
Rough estimate.
I work approximately 5-6 hours a day five days a week and then at least 2 hours on Sundays. I can expect to bring in anywhere from 600-800 dollars every two weeks. There are so many variables to take in to this though. How fast you type, how much you make per line (7.40 for me). Good luck! This is not an easy job to get into, so just make sure it is really what you want to do...If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
Oh my ... you have it rough. I don't think I even know how to cook without onions! sm
For my meatloaf, I use salsa too, plus hamburger, hot Jimmy Dean sausage, breadcrumbs, & egg. Heck, this is making me hungry for meatloaf now! :-)
Thanks, it has been a rough 2005 for many reasons - sm
but Jen is doing well now. Her hair grew back quick (3 different colors currently, quite interesting), looks like a little elf now and everyone thinks she is so cute (those that don't think she is a boy, get that a lot now since her hair is so short). Almost 10 months cancer-free so far and things look very good for her. She looks so different and healthy now that she is done chemo. Her 6th birthday present will probably be being told her Port-A-Cath is coming out--Dr. appt. day before her birthday, due to come out a year or so after the initial surgery. But I am so thrilled that she was eligible for a wish. She got exactly what she wanted and it was a trip of a lifetime I don't think any of us will ever forget. I am very grateful to everyone who contributes to Make-A-Wish, it is really amazing what they do for sick kids and their families. I hope everyone here had a good 2006!
Did you watch the CMT thing on her..she really had it rough and made it
d
Yeah, it would be rough cancelling your cable
this time of year. Just think, then you would be stuck with only the networks to watch if you put in some rabbit ears. Not fun. I did that once last year. It gave me a good excuse to read more, but eventually I got sick of having nothing to watch and got satellite.
And it's rough work dangit. First job, large hospital,
drives me nuts sometimes. Sorry, just felt like throwing that out there! ;)
Can y'all give me a rough estimate on how many lines per hour you can do with SR...sm
speech recognition? I crunched some numbers today, and I can only do 300 per hour. I think I might tapped out. Is that good, average, bad? I don't have anything to compare it to, so not sure where I stack up. Any info would be great. Thanks guys!
My niece does this
My 14 year old niece does this to me, I finally blocked her from my incoming list and she doesn't know the difference.
get yourself on the phone now. your niece will thank you later. MUCH later probably, but oh well.
nm
I wish my niece would read this...
she has a Sheltie that does NOTHING BUT BARK, at every pin drop, every car that goes by, every shadow that passes. It truly is enough to drive you nuts.
Would your niece be interested ...sm
in talking with one of the agencies that works with pregnant women that really goes in depth with her about the options? If you know anyone who had an abortion try to have her talk to them because I've not known any woman who had one that didn't wonder about the baby and what the child may have been like if they hadn't aborted it, and despite what the abortion doctors try to say - it is a surgical procedure and ends the life of a child and there are emotional implications from that. She should also talk with women who have given up a child for adoption as well. If she's serious about not wanting to keep the child then she should consider adoption and realize that there are resources out there to help her through the pregnancy, including the pregnancy bills, and alternatives that will give the child to a loving home instead of a dumpster.
pregnant niece
I had a similar situation and my niece was 19 at the time. She was not sleeping around, was with 1 guy but not using OCP or anything else because it was her sexual relationship and she thought she "couldn't get pregnant." She had sex ed and was told better, but apparently she listened to her stupid friends instead of her teachers.
I'm a little more hardened than you - I would have told her that I was taking her advice and minding my own business.
I'm not opposed to abortion. I think it is much more of a sin to bring a child into the world when you cannot support s/he and do not love s/he unconditionally.
Your niece made a mistake, a big one, but she should not have to forfeit her chance at a life because of a sexual encounter. If she can't remember to take the pill, she needs to get a patch. But she should be using a barrier method of some kind to prevent STDs.
The fact that she is not responsible enough to use birth control should be a clue that she is not responsible enough to raise a child.
My niece is a product of IVF (sm)
I remember only too well my sister-in-law's tears as she and my brother-in-law (husband's brother) struggled to have their first child. Finally, they tried IVF and had their first daughter, my niece and my Godchild. She just made her First Communion a couple of weeks ago. They had two more girls after her, both through IVF. (They are 7, 5, and 3). I know those 3 little girls are so adored. Mom and dad are going to be paying that debt down for quite a while, but I know that they, and I'm sure everyone who has gone through the same, will say that it was worth it.
WRONG - my niece does it and you can
only have so many parties before your friends and/or relatives are ready to choke you. LOL. It's really a pyramid and good if you get in at the beginning. Not a good time to sell it now - it will be a thing of the past very soon.
I really have to clarify that my niece..sm
really isn't the kind of girl who would send anything suggestive.
I despise ain't! My niece says it sometimes and
She's way too smart to talk like that, and my kids spend a lot of time with her, and now I've heard them say it a few times too. grrrrr. I'll have to tell them that little riddle - they'll love that!
My niece is getting married later this month BUT they are
actually only throwing themselves an engagement party as their BIG wedding and reception will be next year. They are really getting married this year, I wanted that clear, they just have to save for their big fairy tale wedding. Anyway, we're invited to this little ceremony this year along with the "engagement" party. What is an appropriate gift for this kind of occasion? I'm not a cheapo but want something appropriate as next year are the big doings and of course the gift then should be bigger and nicer, or go with the nice gift now and the appropriate 1-year anniversary gift next year. Any ideas ladies or gents? Thanks.
A co-worker of my niece took in a family
When she went to work, they cleaned her out, including her kitchen utensils!!!
My niece was born at 4:16 this morning.
My sister in law gave birth to my niece at 4:16 this morning and I am sure that people will raise their eyebrows everytime she tells someone her DOB.
my niece is an ultrasound tech and has sm
been for about 8-9 years. When she went in there was a shortage of ultrasound techs (kind of like the MT profession). I think her schooling was 2 years. She had to take some pre-requisite stuff that she didn't have in highschool. She makes great money. But she told me that there is getting to be an overabundance of US techs now. Use to be you had to go through the whole radiology program just to even think about being an ultrasound tech. Because of the shortage they took the US tech out of the radiology program and started programs independently. I am wondering if US is going to go the way of MT and there will be so many of them and not enough jobs.
On the positive side of it, they have many options available. There are traveling US techs that go from state to state or just facility to facility. Go for it!
My niece was involved in a similar situation..sm
This man, my father-in-law, her grandfather recently grabbed her breast and butt and tried to kiss her. We all thought he was a saint and could do no wrong. I find it hard to believe that your stepfather just started this behavior. He may have done things like this before. I told my niece to tell her grandmother. It did not go over well but in the end, she believed her granddaughter. She chose to stay with this jerk, but she also still has a relationship with her granddaughter. The granddaughter does not go over there anymore but grandma goes to see her. We've warned other family members to stay away. Later, it came out that he fondled his stepdaughter when she was 14. We have also found pictures of a neighbor in her bikini on his computer. My niece was 25 when this happened. The incident with the stepdaughter was 25 years ago. That's why you should be very careful about your stepfather. I would just tell your mother and stay away from your stepfather. Don't be afraid of the person with the big mouth. This shouldn't be kept a secret. Tell everyone. My husband's family wants to hide this from everyone because they'll think badly of the grandfather. Too bad for him. I've told everyone who will listen. He at least admitted to it. I think everyone who comes in contact with him should be aware that he's a pervert. I wouldn't even talk to the stepfather. Just stay away from him. Good luck in what ever you choose.
I would think you'd make lots of money. My niece had her sm
eyelids and eyebrows done a few years ago, and I don't know what the final cost was, but the DOWN PAYMENT was $800!!!
Good luck!
I have a niece studing to be a PA. I told her to call me when she starts dictating sm
I told her to be sure to ENUNCIATE, spell difficult names. I hope that will give us one PA that will be clear. LOL
Does anyone have trouble with TMJ?
I have an appointment with an ortho to have it looked at. I have the clicking, bruxism, headaches, jaw fatigue and pain, loss of hearing on one side, and now neck pain and crepitus when I turn my head. The pain radiates all the way down my back. I'm so scared that i'm in the last stages and can only be helped with all sorts of surgery. Has anyone here been fitted with any sort of device that reverses this effectively? It makes my life miserable.
Don't want to get in trouble but want to ask a ?
about our MQ accounts.
I work out of the Amherst office and so far, I have enough work. This weekend we are a bit out of turn-around but the ladies on this account, and I, are working quickly to change that (when I'm not poking my nose on this message board).
I am wondering though, if it's just a few isolated accounts that are running out of work from the Amherst office, and it is illegal to discuss what accounts those are? It probably is--just think it would make a lot of us feel better (especially those of us out of Amherst that are starting to worry) if we knew that it's the same few accounts that are running out of work all the time, and not ALL of the accounts.
I don't know. This whole situation makes me sort of sick. I'm thankful I have work, but very sad that many of you appear not to and wonder when my account is next.
all the ones I usually have trouble with
I make expansions with my incorrect spelling to the correct one. There is just times I feel my fingers are dyslexic!
I had no trouble doing this on my last job, but cannot seem to do it now.
Different software. I have some of the same accounts, but none of the fast-moving accounts. This is all clinic work, but so was the last job. A lot of demographics to enter. The doctors give you all of these before they tell you which format this is, i.e. letter or office note, so you have to wait until you know to even start typing.
I don't have any trouble with

the trouble is, they don't want to pay us

Anyone else have trouble with
I recently started working from home as an IC. This is my first job as an MT. I am really enjoying it thus far, but I am having the hardest time getting to sleep at night. For the past two nights I have been awake until 4 a.m. Can't seem to turn off my brain. Since it was the weekend it wasn't that big of a deal, but tomorrow is Monday, and I have to get up early to get my son to school, and get to work. I was just curious if anyone else ever seems to have this problem, and if so, any suggestions on how to shut off my brain? I'm exhausted and I know my work quality will suffer if I don't get some quality sleep.
I had trouble with this too.
I save as a file and then attach the file. There is an option towards the end to "save to rtf file". I could not get the option to e-mail directly to work.
He is already in trouble.
He just had his sister call me which is a direct violation of his Stay Away Order. Tee hee. The police officer last night told me that no matter what he tells him that he WILL do at least one of the three things to violate the order. Ta Da, he obviously hasn't improved his listening skills in 24 hours. He will never ever change. He doesn't hear God knocking like I did. I pity him in his blindness, but not very much....
It was too much trouble for me to
strip out any header/footer information, dates, ages, etc. on individual files and also take out "doctorisms" that are not actually in Stedman spellcheck. If you have ever gotten stopped by spellcheck and hit ignore, how can you be sure the information you enter into IT is right?
Anybody else having trouble using
I just cannot get the hang of this expander. I am not meeting production as a result. I also continue to get not so great QA scores because of 'expander' entries that are not intended to be in the doc.
Trouble
AMEN!!!
My 4 yo is having trouble.
Hi, I could use some advice here. My daughter just started preschool a few weeks ago, we just moved to a town that offers it. The teacher has been sending notes home that she won't listen or concentrate on the work. They are starting word recognition and writing in preschool now. The notes express concern for her in kindergarten next year. My daughter has never really been interested in writing or coloring. She likes to look at books and play with dolls right now. The teacher tells me that her hands are "weak" and that I need to work on that. I've spent the evening crying since she brought home the latest note. Her father and I are separated, so I'm kind of alone on this. He thinks she has ADHD because it "runs in his family". I'm not sure I believe in that. Perhaps my marriage and impending divorce have really impacted her badly, but I don't think that has anything to do with writing or drawing. Please...I could use a stiff hug right about now. Thanks for any advice. Lynn
Believe it or not, I had more trouble with
time off when I worked inhouse at the hospital. That manager wouldn't bend at all. You could call in dead and she would still expect you to be there. The company I work for now is much better, as long as I am able to switch my shifts, they don't care.
The trouble is...
you'll always be sliding between financially challenged and leisure fun time challenged. There's no easy way out of it, and I've been at this for 20+ years and it has only gotten harder to make a living and also make a life. Soon you'll be able to make more money at Wal-mart or McDonald's than in MT so I'm glad I'm really close to retirement.
so much trouble
I used to have so much trouble with my internet service through my local electric company - every time there was a storm ,etc. . my internet was out. . I switched to windstream and I have not missed any work since. . I am very pleased with them. .
I did have trouble after that sm
I visited there as well and that same day I had a terrible time, my computer shut down and stated I had no programs installed, took me all day to get going again, don't go there!!
Trouble too
I have trouble with this too. I'm guessing certain personality types will lean this way with a stay-at-home job.
I know others who don't have any problem with it and are on the go all the time when not workig.
It would probably be good to take a class or join some sort of group so that we have scheduled time away; otherwise it's too easy to stay home even though it isn't good for us.
Anyone have this trouble?
I use lots of Expanders and create more all the time. It's great when I do the same account or two regularly, but during spells of getting more accounts (when my main ones are low) I find I waste time fumbling to see if I have an Expander for things.
I have had to deviate from a normal expansion pattern (in a variety of ways), and as long as I am typing the same several dictators, I get used to the way they speak and my expansions and all the deviations just come automatically. However, when I get tons of other docs saying things in so many different ways, the deviations don't come to me and I fumble. I think I could go faster with more straight type.
I know people say to have expansions for everything, but do any of you have a good way to determine when it's better to just type it out? - I don't think anyone could use 100% expansion (or even 90%), but does anyone have any advice or general thougths on this?
Thanks so much!
The only one having trouble dealing with anything is you
If your life sucks it's no one's fault but your own. Successful people take accountability for their lives and move forward instead of placing blame wherever they can and being angry at the world like you obviously are.

The trouble is, everything is politicized...
For every report of something horrible, there's another one disputing it. I didn't sayh we shouldn't be custodians of the earth, but when one single country is blamed, and by its own citizens yet (especially when THEIR man is NOT in office) without taking into account the pollution that comes from places like China and India and Brazil, or Europe for that matter which doesn't even use unleaded gas (last time I heard), then I refuse to get too worked up. We can't even have a hurricaine without somebody bringing up global warming. Do YOUR research and you'll see that nothing unusual is happening that hasn't happened before, long before greenhouse gases were a problem. This earth has reinvented itself more than once, and long after we're gone, it will still be here going strong.
Trouble with docqscribe
I can't log on either and I have been on hold with 888-dictate for over 45 minutes.
I guess my doc would be in trouble.
I was recently in the hospital which happens to be the same hospital I work at and we do not outsource at all. We have our own MTs. If the doc needed to get the HP, OP note and DS done that he did on me and the report had to be done by an MT that doesn't know me then he would be in trouble because all the MT knows me. LOL. I do trust my co-workers and we are all aware of HIPPA and confidentiality. We only get reminded once a month.
Interesting...some may be in trouble
I'm an independent contractor. This was very interesting. Hospitals, MTSO's and some MTs may be in trouble.
Anyone else having trouble getting into chat? (sm)
For some reason I can't get into chat anymore to see if anyone is there. I've tried to resign up and it always tells me I have to use 6 letters in the password...when I've even used 9 and it still tells me I have to have more than 6 letters. I'm about to give up. I used to be able to get into it for for the last few weeks...not.
