your family accepts this?
I've been an MT over 10 years, have to work the holidays that fall on my scheduled day of week to work, usually Thanksgiving, and they know this. Yet, they take it personally, get upset with me and do the behind the back talk she's "antisocial" thing. Why can't they accept it as fact? I do NOT get PTO, NOR holidays. I believe a comment made this past Thanksgiving when everyone went up north was "sorry you feel you have to work." Its like, who are you people? Calling them family would be a stretch.
I just found out Trascend accepts satellite...
Wanted to share, in case someone else wanted to know.
Has anyone kept a list of line rates, report rates, benefits, etc for sm
the different companies out there? I feel lost and confused. It seems like everything is changing daily, and I am not being organized enough to keep up. I am about to actively look for full time employment again but if there was a list, I would be able to sort through a lot more quickly.
Can anyone help? I am going to start keeping a chart myself in case anyone needs this in the future.
Line rates in the Northeast - can anyone advise as to what the going rates are in the NE part of the
country? Specifically Connecticut. I want to make sure I am on target here. Thanks.
It's headed your way.
Have a good afternoon!
Not big headed?
Maybe you need a dictionary - get your head out of BOS for awhile - because you definitely are arrogant.
I'm an "old timer" as you call us - been doing this for 30 years, started with a Selectric, carbon paper, and plastic belts. My first dictation was an Indian neurologist whose own secretary couldn't understand him. That was it - no training, no MT school. I was an intelligent person who could spell, type and had speak articulately. That's the kind of person who used to be hired in the "old" days to do MT. They paid us a real wage with real benefits while we learned.
I'm very computer literate and probably know the BOS as well as you do. I remember when we were able to transcribe an excellent report without the BOS because it didn't exist, and the MDs were very happy with our work and they treated us with respect.
The Book of Style is NOT carved in stone. As its name intimates, it a style guide, and style is up for interpretation.
BTW, people are defensive when they are attacked. It doesn't necessarily mean they are the ones in the wrong. Try being less offensive.
I'm hot headed, but not that hot headed! :)
I know what I have, and I am keeping them FOR NOW. However to make myself try to do the work right now (the day after this happened) is very, very hard. I have SPOILED them for seven years. what irks me the most is that I skip vacations, i skip girls nights... simply because I HAVE TO WORK for them. That was my choice yes, but what happened to loyalty? I would expect this from a big company, but not from a close-knit group that I thought it was. Apparently I was wrong, and like my dad said, it's a business, they dont care about you.
How sad
And I'm now actively seeking other career opportunities because I refuse to be taking advantage of, maybe that's too much pride... but i DESERVE better. :)
I need help........email headed your way! nm

My son was three when he was potty trained.
I did similar things.
I don't know if you are already doing this or not, but the best thing I have found to potty train my kids is.....stop buying diapers/pull-ups. If you run out and you don't buy anymore then you really don't have a choice but to be consistent. Having nine pair of underwear on hand is what is recommended.
You can by the the toilet targets online for 5.95. They ARE helpful in making it a game. I always used the whole "Daddy is a big boy, don't you want to be like Daddy?" (works sometimes)
Make it a routine. Go every so often (timer), use the bathroom, flush the toilet, shut the lid, wash your hands, turn the light off, get your reward. Be consistent.
I have four girls and only one boy and my girls were trained by 2 years old with EASE - boys are much more difficult, mine anyway.
potty training
most children achieve this at their own pace, but I have a few ideas that helped with my son. I made a game of it. I floated squares of toilet paper in the toilet and had he do "target practice" and if he hit the target then he would get an M&M. He thought it was cool and it worked. Another thing I tried, a kitchen egg timer. I set it for 1-1/2 hour and whether he had to go or not, we went. This got him used to going and helped him to remember. One very important thing to remember, do not punish him or make the child feel bad about not going in his underwear this will make him feel worse and make it harder. Instead, over praise him when he does it right. Also, my son really wanted the cool underwent (this was 20 years ago) like Heman and ninja turtles instead of the white cotton kind. So I told him he had to earn them by showing me that he was trying and eventually he got the kind of underwear he wanted. Just some thoughts. Just do not make this a big deal, because in reality it is not. He could live to be 80 years old, so just let him take his time. He will get it. Just make it fun and as stress free as possible and you will see resutls.
Potty Training
Hi there! I went through the same thing with my son a few monthes ago. He is the same age and the situation you described was identical to my son's. Okay here is what worked form me. I basically decided no more diapers or pull ups. My son would beg for them when we went to the store...I was firm in saying no. Then I started insisting that he wears underwear at all times. When he soiled them we changed them. Finally I think he realized that I was not going to give in and after about the second day of constantly being pulled away from whatever he was playing with to change his underwear he started to soil them less and use the toilet more. Honestly, I would sometimes wait if his favorite show was coming on or something to change him then...that way he was inconvenienced also. I would tell him during his protest that when he goes in the toilet that we won't have to change his underwear during Blues Clues. It progressively got better and was remedied within about 2 weeks. However, I was probably more busy washing undies than I have ever been...but it was worth it. I hope so much this will help. Good luck!
potty training
new to this board, just had to weigh in on the potty training issues. Lots of great advice here in terms of being patient, supportive, encouraging....want to add my personal experience as mom of 5, including a set of boy/girl twins. My oldest DS, 18, did not train till almost 4. This despite being in COTTON diapers, not pullups. Hey, stuff happens. My oldest DD, 16, trained herself at 2, kept herself clean/dry during the day for more than 3 months. Did such a good job that she got a UTI, and lost control, so frightened by this experience that she went back into diapers for another 9 months! Finally "clicked" at 3+. The twins, well, now you can see the differences between boys and girls, but SHE encouraged him (I have a great pic of the 2 of them sitting on the toilet, one behind the other, like they were riding a horse!) They were consistently clean/dry at 3. Toilet training is a process, I talk about body parts, body functions, things like up, down, clean, dry, wipe, flush....vocabulary and lots of demonstration (what's privacy?). My youngest DD, 4 the end of November, just trained in February. Yes, 4+. YIKES!!! the problem? My teenagers! they were way too interested in "helping" me parent her, and were way too heavy handed. Gave her something to rebel against. So she took control and decided NOT to do her business in the toilet! She was also more than a bit phobic about the whole bathroom business, must be a very big deal if EVERYONE in the house is so so so very interested in what was going on inside her diaper. My attitude was leave it alone, it will happen (so nice to have perspective that experience brings). We had to tone things waaaayyyyyy doooooownnn in order to get her to "chill" about this whole thing. At 3-1/2, I "encouraged" her a bit more...I put her diapers/pull-ups near the bathroom door, along with a big supply of underwear, lots of pretty underwear. Also a trash can. I told her, you change when you are wet, I am out of a job! She had to choose each time, diaper or panties. She consistently chose diapers, and changed, and put the wet diaper in the trash. I still had to change dirty diapers, but figured that even with trained kids, mom is still responsible to make sure that "clean-up" is done satisfactorily. At 3-3/4, I started having DD sit on the toilet in a diaper when she had to do #2, then I handled the clean-up. One day, at 4+, it just "clicked" and she did #2 WITHOUT the diaper.....and the rest is history. Toilet training is a process, she had to learn how to control #1 and #2, in the house, use a toilet OUTside the house (don't you just love using the bathroom at the supermarket, at the mall, here, there, everywhere?) and then night-time training. BUT because this one was so OLD, all these pieces fell into place within 2 weeks!!! Clean/dry both day and night! Lots of patience, matter of fact praise (hey, no one claps/sings, gives stickers, candies, etc when Mom uses the potty!). This too shall pass. In my experience, it seems that the bigger the deal is made out of this, the longer the process takes.
I'm headed back....
for chemistry (pre-med). It's gonna be a long and hard several years, but it will be worth it.
Good luck to you on your new career! :)
Well, at least you are headed in the right direction! sm
I have no clue what to even get started with. I had thought about accounting, but I'm really not all that great with numbers. And to tell you the truth, it would be nice to have some sort of job where I can physically move around. I think the sitting is really getting to me! I swear I'm developing ADHD in my "old age".... ha! Old at 39! But regardless, I know I need to have some variety and movement in my job.
I have considered becoming a P.A. Would need to take some upgrading on my physics and again, math is a weak point and I would have to work extra hard on that point.
Otherwise, I'm clueless for ideas. I have horses and really love working with them, but it's pretty hard to make a decent living with horses. I also enjoy horticulture, but I live on the prairies and horticulture is rarely do-able when it's blistering cold outside unless you've spent millions on indoor facilities!
Ideas? Thoughts? Help!
Coding's headed offshore too, isn't it?

Well, I have 3 rambuncious (sp), bull headed boys. sm
Of course, they knew everything then and know everything now. I couldn't pick their friends but boy I sure pounded into their heads that as long as their friends were at my house, they abided by my rules and my boys were responsible for their friends' behaviors. If their friends acted out of line, my boys were responsible for telling them to get the hell out--didn't have much trouble when I gave the kids that responsibility. Sometimes their friends weren't the cream of the crop or came from not very well to do families, but they always acted appropriately at our house, then and now. Have earned a lot of respect from my kids' friends that way. Sometimes, they spent more time at our house than they did their own. My kids weren't angels but they didn't turn out to be felons or junkies or drunks, either.
3-1/2-year old still not completely potty trained...help
My son is 3-1/2-years-old and is not potty trained. Actually most of the time if we put underwear on him he will forget and use the bathroom in them like he does in his pull-ups BUT if he goes without any underwear or pull-ups he will go to the potty. Any clues? Bigger diapers are expensive and I really feel like he is lagging in this area. Thanks!!!!
Potty Training tricks that worked for me....
I did this will all of my children. I would go to Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store and buy a lot of little cheap toys and trinkets and put them in a pillowcase. Everytime he or she went to the bathroom they could reach in and pick out a prize. They went every time and after less than a week were potty-trained and when the bag was empty that was it. This last year when I trained another one the lady at the check out asked my why I had so many toys and I told her what I was doing and she said "that is an expensive way to do it", but really $15 for a bunch of toys is the same price as a week of diapers and after that week I don't need the diapers anymore. Anyhow, I know it is bribing, but it works and you can't beat that!
I was soooo lucky... my son was potty trained at 2..
He had his 2nd birthday party on Saturday, and on Monday he started potty training. Never bought another diaper. Two weeks later, he was in underwear during the day. But, I took him regularly and monitored his juice intake. Thirty minutes after dinner was the last full drink. He would go potty right before bedtime at 8pm and maybe get a little juice if he asked for it. Since I worked nights, I would wake him up (or just take him sleep) to the bathroom at around 12am or 12:30am. He would wake up dry most mornings, but he wore Pull-Ups until he was about 2-1/2. He is 7 now and has an accident every blue moon, mainly because he falls asleep in bed without going to the bathroom right before getting in bed. Proud of him. Yours will get there too.
Your DUTY to say industy is headed offshore.

The question was for those with spouses or so's. Take your pitty potty to another party.
I better switch my computer chair for a potty chair. nm

Help!!! just been offered an OB/GYN doctor account. What should I charge?
Rates
I am out here in Oregon. I will be completely honest but have been told on this board that I am too low and do too much for my docs but they have been very loyal to me, all have been with me from 5 to 18 years, pay on time -- 48 hours recepit of invoice, no questions asked about line count, etc., never a bounced check, etc. I have just raising my rates to 0.115 for my larger accounts and 0.125 for a small account that I have that does less than 1500 lines per month. Oh yea, my psych account is still at 0.11 cpl but he is not 24 hour turn around and going digital. But I do charge gross line, 65 charaters per line. I pick up and deliver, provide the sticky paper, cut apart the chart notes, do envelopes. I make about $3200 to $3500 per month depending on whether all docs are in all month or not, (6 docs) and since I have been doing them so long, I put in 25 to 28 hours per week with printing, pick-up delivery, etc. And yes, they appreciate me and give me Christmas bonus, birthday gifts, extra time when I have a crisis, etc. Had been working at a clinic doing about 20 hours per week in addition for the past year but just paid off my last attorney fee from a ugly divorce and so am qutting there as of next month and taking three months to do just my own accounts and have some fun this summer. I had a resume from a company out here that wanted my clinic account and charged 0.18 cpl but to me that is way too high. I feel that I average 30 to 40 per hour and to me that is more than fair. And yes I provide my own insurance, own my own home, put $500 to $800 aside for retirement. Patti

It definitely depends on where you live. I'm in Arkansas and have a hard time getting 0.10 out of docs around here. Right now I have a peds acct that is 0.08 and an internal med that is 0.9, 65 character lines. The peds acct provides their own paper for me to print on and I email transcription to the internist, so they print it. I do pick up tapes everyday and I am always available, never take vacations unless the docs do.
The best thing to do would probably be to talk to some of the doctors and negotiate terms.

I work full time and also do "extra accounts" to support my love to travel - live in the northeast. I do a big GI practice (6 docs), ENT practice (2 docs) and high-risk pregnancy (2 docs). I charge a flat $3 a page no matter how many lines are on that page. (These are all letters). I've been told I'm cheap, but it averages out to about $30 an hour for the most part and anywhere from 16 to 20 hours a week. All are quite good dictators, provide their letterhead and since I have been doing it for so many years, easy accounts. They are wonderful about me taking vacation - just hold the work for me. A bit overwhelming at times when I get back from vacation, but worth it. As all offices are near my full time job, I pick up and deliver almost every day.
Rates...
I work as an IC for a neurology group and also for a child and adolescent/family and marriage psychiatrist. I charge 12 cents per line based on a 60-character line. I had worked for another group that paid me 14 cents/60-character line, but they needed tapes picked up daily and I lived nearly 45 minutes away. If you have experience, in my area you can pretty well set your own price and they will jump at it.
QA rates
Can I ask what you get per line?
nth
rates
I have a couple clients like this -- was way easier to just charge a higher line rate than to figure time/paper/ink/postage, etc for every billing. My docs liked the all-inclusive flat rate. You can write off the paper, postage, etc as business expense. Good luck.
Rates in NJ
Just checking in to see what a fair rate would be to charge for specialities (neuro and ortho) in the Morris/Sussex/Warren County areas of NJ. If anyone out there has any info, I'd appreciate it.
CMT rates
I have never seen it make a bit of difference. I do very well without having those initials. Good question about verifying that though, I have seen some really awful QA work that boast those initials.
In looking through the ads, the rates seem to go from 7-10 cpl for IC or emp. nm

Paid by minute. what is the going rate?
Rates
Thank you all for your input, it has been helpful. I charge 12 cents per line 10 words (no spaces) = a line. It's mainly the gas and the time driving out there. I figure it's 2.5 hours per week specifically for them. I do include errands etc during my delivery, but now that my kids are going to be out of school, I will have to make a special trip out there just for them. My other two accounts are strictly digit and we communiate via internet. I did raise my rates to .14 last week, and they threw a fit. I suggested that I come in less frequently or that they consider going digital and they are not open. I am not sure what is going to happen at this point, but I feel with all the time and money spend just on this one account, 12 per line is not reasonable. Plus, I just read today that gas prices will hit 4.00 per gallon in my areas this summer. Thanks again for all your input, it was very helpful.
pay rates
I would like information about pay rates. I get paid for a gross line. Due to recent changes in computer systems I looked at new and old reports and found that my character line is more than 80 characters.
pay rates
I used to be paid by the gross line and it all depends on the size of the font and the margin length. However, you also have to consider how many times do you truly do a *full line*. There are many lines where only a few characters are entered, and you are being paid the same for those, as you are for a full line. If you are really concerned that you are not being paid enough, take one report you just finished, do a character count, and divide by 65, multiply that by your current pay rate and see the difference. I would go back to gross line in a heart beat if it was available to me. but that is just my opinion.
Pay rates --sm
I think the pay rates you suggested are a little bit high. Everything I have seen and even applied for, have started on an average of 7 to 8 cpl for both employees and IC, even with MTers with up to 30 years experience. Most companies state that the pay rate is based on experience, but it is not really that way. They have a set starting rate and you either take it or leave it. Raises are rare in any company. Some offer production *bonuses*, but from what I have read, there are so many loop holes involved in making those, that it is not even worth it or feasible. Just my 2 cents.
pay rates
My company pays by the dictated minute with 7 levels of pay depending how much you type and how efficient you are. The more efficient work you turn in, the more pay you get. If you consistently turn in poor work you will be limited to access of jobs and/or let go.
Rad Rates
Well, you would surely wish to do as the client asks, wouldn't you? :) And yes, they say how they'd like to be billed.
Per line 14-20 cents, depends on how many characters, TAT.
Per report 2-3.
Never billed or paid by page or minute for rad.
Best wishes!
IC rates
If an IC works for himself/herself, they can set their own rates, but if they work for a company as an IC, like I do, they get paid whatever that company sets as their pay scale for ICs. It is very unlikely that if you work for a company as an IC that you will get a raise. Usually raises are only given to employee based transcriptionists.
My rates sm
I get 8.5 cents PLUS incentives at one job. I get 10 cpl at my PT job. I do OP notes exclusively.
I have only 5 years to your 6, so I feel like yeah, you should get more.
OP note only MTs are desirable. Companies, anymore, are hiring OP note MTs and the rest of acute care MTs. I am pretty sure you can do better. If you even have incentives for what you can do, it would be better.
QA rates
Just my opinion.
Where I work, MTs generally make 10 cpl and QAs make 5 cpl. I chose to do QA, simply because I have done this more years than I care to admit and I find the work more interesting and less tiring than MT work.
I think if you do a good job as an Editor (QA), you will make about the same hourly rate as a transcriptionist. While I do not make more money doing QA (about the same as MT), I like it better because there is much less keyboarding and I enjoy figuring out the difficult transcripts. Also, I think in the next 5 or 10 years, editors will be the only language specialists with decent jobs.
I think if you take less than about 5 cpl, you'll end up making less than if you were working as an MT.

can anyone tell me average rate per line for the north east area? I was thinking 14-18 cpl?
rates
PLEASE let me know of anyplace that pays 9 cpl or more!!! Thanks and good luck!
IC rates
Depending on where your accounts come from... if you're with an MTSO I'd say 8-9 cpl is the "going rate". If you have your own clients, though, your rate would likely depend on the area of the country/state you're in... anywhere from 11-18 cpl maybe?
Higher rates
When my hospital looking into a MTSO for quicer TAT, they were quoted .33 cpl. This company only paid their MTs. .07 cpl. Needless to say, my hospital stuck to what they were paying me.
I wonder how many MTs will be so thrilled to do MQ ASR when the new rates come out. Should be
interesting to see how that pans out.
ME rates reduced
yep, the letter's in the mail. if you're doing ME work your rate will be decreased off of your base rate because they think the average production increases by 25%. well, you have the choice as staying as a MT at your regular rate, which I'm going to do as their ASR program can't seem to distinguish between the smaller words in a document even with the person saying them very, very clearly that you're continuously having to peck along to correct. The system even leaves out words that clear dictators are saying. Until they fix those kinds of things I'm not messing with it. You cannot get a rhythm doing the ME work -- at least that's what I've found. I've timed it and I can type a document faster from scratch than I can do it with ASR. That's just my opinion. They are paying us pennies to do a job that requires more than flipping burgers at Jack.
VR Rates Nationally
What are people making across the board on VR? On the company board someone said Transcend is only paying 55%, MQ 80%, what about the others?
Canadian rates, please help
Could any of you help me in making this very important decision please? I have contacts that can help me get contracts from a small Physical therapy/chiropractic care clinic in Alberta, Canada. But, I have no clue as to how much is charged per 65 cpl with spaces in Canada. Considering that one US dollar is equivalent to Canadian $1.15, I guess I would perhaps be able to get a better rate. But how much would you say is a rate that would do justice to both parties? Anyone doing a similar work from Canada, working MTs with MT companies in Canada, please help. Any input will be welcome…Thank you….Maple
How are their insurance rates?
