Incompetant manager/coworker

Read the following report that a co-worker of mine typed for a company I used to work for.   Our job was read office notes on a patient and summarize their history for the insurance company.  Our MDs would then agree or deny with the request (in this case a motorized scooter) that another MD made.   Is this hysterical or what?  I just ran across this on an old floppy disk from 2 years ago.  I eventually quit this job even though the pay was amazing because I couldn't deal with the incompentance any longer.  It drove me crazy. 


 


This coworker was my manager's "teacher's pet".  Of course, my manager didn't have a clue what one medical word meant.  LOL  My coworker had this job for over 5 years and didn't have a clue either.  I think if they would have outsourced to India they would have have had more accuracy. LOL


 


The following report was actually sent to the insurance company with the physican's recommendation.  


 


 


 The patient is a ____year old male with an inguinal hernia of the thoracic or lumbar spine.  The date of injury was noted as ______  The case manager noted a history of multiple abdominal surgeries, last being in _____ The physician noted that he had chronic intractable somatic pain and had been certified for a narcotic pump, which gave him some relief.


 


The ______ office note from Dr. X noted refilled of pain pump under fluoroscopy.  The physician noted that the claimant was having difficulty with different activities with family outside in his abdomen and pain in the legs.  He could not support his weight.  He had been having difficulty going beyond a 15-minute period.  The physician recommended a scooter and stated he was not able to return to work.

Ok, maybe someone is having this same issue as me. A couple of weeks ago I made mistake and the person on call for the weekend not there, tried to contact them. I He contacted me about this after my shift was over. Instead of stopping there, he in turn told the higher boss up on the chain and then I was contacted again by them. Does this happen in most cases- the 1 you talk with then goes higher and you get slapped on the wrists from both sides? Does 1 person calling it to your attention just not work?
Only once have I seen a coworker fired and that was due to
the client no longer wanting the MT on the account. This MT was also a high producer, management raved about this person's high numbers while we gasped everytime we saw their work as it was riddled with careless errors, had no format and extra spaces and lines, uneven margins made their work look like the work of an amateur.

It took just under a year for the client to finally say something. In the meantime, I was accused of being "jealous because they made more money."

Type each report like it is the only way. Make it look like a page out of a medical journal and sign it off with love :) The benefit then comes from having people look to see who typed should a great report. Off days occur, of course, and that is when we should slow down.

It sounds like they are having overload issues with the unlimited long distance pkgs they are offering. These pkgs don't say - only 4 hrs a day allowed. I think they made the mistake.

As I SD in another post above, business a/c's, from what I've been told, are for people with multiple lines, special wiring needs, and needing fast repair times. Not for people "just because they are on the phone a lot".

I don't think they have a legal leg to stand on re monitoring calls tho. That is scary!!
Has a HIPPA law been violated by my ex coworker?

I am a radiology MT and worked at the hospital who did my chest x-ray and lab work after I was given a dx of breast CA on Tuesday.  I had been given Xanax which I took and was in a sheer panic because I am afraid .


The woman MT I worked with at the radiology dept and I have kept in touch.  I told her as I was being worked up (did not tell her I had CA as she has a big mouth) to let me know if she does my chest x-ray and let me know if it is abnormal.  I then went into the surgeons office where he had been a faxed of the chest x-ray with the CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS:  Breast cancer.  on the top.  When I returned home, I had an e-mail from her that was an exact cut and paste of my chest x-ray with the exception that CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS:  Breast cancer. had been cut from the copy.  She has since stopped all contact with me and now I fear that the entire MT dept and hospital I worked in for two years with know I am suffering from this without my telling them.


I feel hurt and violated because she knew before I wanted her to (she typed the report I saw but mostly because she has stopped corresponding with me after seeing that I had breast CA.  When I was being worked up, she said my bad lifestyle was the culprit.  She herself has never had a mammogram and refused to see doctors (7th Day Adventist). 


Am I wrong for feeling this way?  Have rules been broken?  Shouldn't she have asked for my wrritten authorization before placing my chest x-ray report in an e-mail. and saying "good job" with reference to teh normal chest I guess (although the words "Breast CA" definitely negated that - it was almost as if she did not want me to know she knew. 


I am so confused right now and have no family members or even close friends so I cannot tell if what I am thinking is even accurate.  The Xanax and Prozac are not helping along with major anxiety.


Any feedback from astute MTs would be appreciated.  Thank you.

As a former QA manager, I've done this.

We had a different kind of weighting when I first started doing QA reviews way back in the olden days (okay, about 10 years ago). I had one MT who would score in negative numbers, then would do okay after being reviewed, then would backslide, then would do okay, ad nauseum. It was just totally bizarre. Major medical errors, would not follow account specs, would not proofread, etc. Problem was (as I've stated in other QA posts) the company I worked for would not fire ANYONE for poor quality. She's still there today, 8 years later, and I'm sure is doing a pretty sucky job. I finally gave up reviewing her as it was a waste of my time. Don't I have a horrible attitude? Such is the life of a QA manager who is not allowed to ensure quality for a company. Anyone want to know the name of  the company so they know where to go for a good time?

Go to the QA manager. Oftentimes

two QA editors will have a different opinion what is correct, especially in terms of style. It's extremely difficult to get all editors on the same page on every issue. No, it's not difficult, it's impossible. There are simply too many variables.


When I was the QA manager I finally decided to have just one Editor who provided feedback on a group of accounts and the rest did not, just because there were too many cooks in the kitchen and I didn't like to see the MTs confused over who was right.


I would not advise going to a transcription manager if there is a QA manager available. Often the transcription managers aren't aware of specifics of QA policy, and might actually give information that counters what should be done.

Since your a former bank manager- how can I get
my credit score up?  My husband and I want to buy a house with no down payment and the lender said that we need to get our credit score up 18 points to do this.  How?  He mentioned paying our credit cards down to almost a zero balance.  What else can we do?  And how fast could we do it?
My dad was a K-mart manager too...
for almost 20 years in the 70's and 80's. He has a four year degree. He is no dummy. Him being a "K-mart manager" afforded us a nice home, nice cars, and my mother was a stay-at-home mom for three kids. Managing and being responsible for a store that big is a lot harder than you think.

When I worked at SS the QA manager
would send us e-mails with new drugs/terms.  Frequently she had them spelled incorrectly.   I worked at YOG for a short time too and one of the QA person sent out an e-mail making a big deal about how it the magnifying glasses were called loop and not loupe.    She got lots and lots of e-mails on that one.

and she said it made my report bold!  Yikes!  This board has helped me so much though.  There are so many knowledgeable MTs who are willing to help and give advice.  I only wish I had had this when I first started many years ago!

I am not exactly sure how our office manager
repaired them. She took the casing apart somehow and I believe she just taped the tape back to the spool to reattach it, but I am not exactly sure. Then, she had to tape the casing back together. It was very risky using it, as I didn't want the defective tape to unwind inside my machine, etc. I don't know of anyone around our area that actually repairs tapes as a service, but I think that would be the better way to go. I know if my machine detects a lot of crinkles in a tape and it starts catching in the machine, it won't play the tape as a safety measure. Our office manager is on vacation this week, and boy is she going to come back to a mess with several tapes on her desk that she will have to take the time to repair.

can make life very uncomfortable for him not just fining him for being late with dictation but suspending his privileges at the hospital until he got his dictation/charts current. Meaning he can't admit his patients, has to get someone else to do it for him. He probably is unaware idictation is being outsourced to people who couldn't care less about his problems and thought his apologies would be relayed to the MT supervisor and then to the HIM manager. Saving him money and serious nagging and threats by what could be a veritable pariah.


I had a department manager who referred to MTs as "you people", something from her past I'm sure. She used to sit in a room next to our office to see if we were talking. When the small town hospital hired me they were 3 months behind in ops. Unfortunately, she would sometimes fall asleep pretending to work on the computer in the room while she eavesdropped (to no avail we were working our butts off) and would get caught by the CEO of the hospital from time to time napping. She LOVED raking a doctor over the coals for any reason and exerting her limited power endlessly over her staff and any unsuspecting physician who found himself caught in her web.  They soon learned. Our MT supervisor was our buffer from her acid temperament and constant headhunting. A very unhappy person.


How to become an MT supervisor/manager?
Just curious from anyone who knows - does this usually require a bachelor's degree and if so, which one?  Also, any clue as to the pay?  Thanks.

When it says it's still running and you aren't seeing it in task manager, go to the processes tab in task manager and see if EditScript Client Main is running.  This happens to me sometimes.

Sounds like you need to have what we call a "sit down" with your boss and discuss your problems. Then thank her for fighting outsourcing!! The department manager I had in-house fought for me and my coworkers for a chance to go with the company they were outsouracing to....the hospital administration just wanted to can us!!!

Just keep hanging in their and have that "sit down"!!!

Ex-Wal-Mart Manager
I had been transcribing for 14 years, decided to go that same route and go to Wal-Mart. Yes, steady income (salary) stocks, but medical not so good. Not a steady schedule, avg 55 hours or more (for management). Decided that if I put those kind of hours working at home I would make more and not have to deal with everyone elses problems or have to watch my back. So, went back home to transcribing -- love the flexible hours, especially for my children and family, and less stress.
Account Manager Pay
Anyone out there have any idea the pay range for an Account Manager.  This would be for a national company involving some travel.  Would appreciate any feedback.  Thx!

I have cherry picking on my account all the time, have complained to account manager and even higher up. they don't see a problem with it and told me just to do the jobs that come to me and don't bother about what other people are doing. Pretty sad, if you ask me. Still looking for different work, too.
I kept trying to tell the manager this same stuff

I don't work there any more (thank goodness), but I kept trying question things to get to the same point.  The transcription manager looked me in the eye and told me that she had talked to the people at Aria who told her that it was not a Word-based platform and that anything with Word was not compatible.  I knew that was crap because we would cut and paste from Word all the time.  The other part of our problem was that she had spent $5k on Stedman's without making sure it was compatible first (which in our situation it wasn't) and they were waiting for the new budget year to get another expensive piece of the puzzle.  Win-Rho or something like that.  I got so many different variations on the story I lost track of which line of garbage they were feeding at any one time.


The transcription manager was way too interested in showing her boobs and flirting with the men in the practice and clearly didn't know what the heck she was doing  regarding the software, and the IT people couldn't help her.  I ended up going back home for more $$ than I was being paid in house and happily washed my hands of both the practice and the software.

God is not a vindictive (sp?) God, He is a kind and loving God.  This hurricane is simply nature, and nothing more, I'm sure...Would you bring your wrath down so hard on your own children for something they did that was wrong? Well, that's how God feels about us...His children, everyone of us. Even those who fight so hard to have Him removed from our lives...we are extremely blessed that God is so wonderful!

Retail management is something to be proud of as well, especially after having Martha Stewart hose her out of her retirement, corporate HQ trying to get rid of the older, higher paid employees in favor of youngsters willing to work for peanuts, and WalMart and Sam's trying to shut them down.

Wow - I most definitely do work at MDI.

If you worked for MDI you would know how extremely busy we are. I sent out a mass email on Wednesday asking for extra help.

I try to NEVER overhire, as I am a Transcriptionist myself and I realize that my MT's need the job and the money coming in on a regular basis. So I do take great offense at your post. AND YES, I really work at MDI.

I worked at one job where the office manager would
go to the gas station on Friday afternoons to buy a case of beer for the employees.  It was his version of "corporate culture".  As the only female working there, it wasn't a great place to work anyways.  The guys told me that the only reason I got hired was because I looked good in a skirt and the office manager was going through a divorce.  My resume spoke for itself, but the comments, which got harsher after a few beers, did create a hostile work environment.

I've been in that position in-house, too. Nothing was ever good enough, fast enough, etc. (This was not too long ago, and I'd been doing this for 35 years, 20 of which were at that hospital!) I got tired of always worrying, always having pain in my neck, hands, etc., and finally left, as did many of their other experienced MTs.

The 'Bully' management style just DOESN'T work. I wonder when those people are going to realize that a happy employee produces more high-quality work, and a stressed-out employee gets sick & costs them money, and/or eventually quits.
Manager work week
I am a transcription manager for a 3 hospital system.  I work in house Mon-Fri 8 to 4:30.   I am on call Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues evening.  My coordinator takes call on Mon/Tues/Wed evenings.  We both have access from home to the backlog and all other applications and keep in close contact from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 at night with staff working from both home and in house.  I also cover a couple of the holidays either in house or from home during the year.  If I had no in house coverage I would be responsible for coming in house to work at any given time. I think it is important the manager/supervisor stay in contact.
I would call and tell the office manager
the problem and state that if they cannot provide a clear schedule of patient names, then there is not much you can do other than leave a blank for the patient name when not certain. The problem is on their end, not yours. Is it possible that can scan them and send them in an e-mail rather than faxing??
You are doing the work of a project manager and
should be given that title and pay scale, at least until the project is fully completed and all changes implemented. Ask for temporary reassignment. Chances are you are so far into the project they don't dare lose you from it now. Good luck!
Same here..new manager this past month
She seems very nice, though I've only spoken to her briefly, once. I worked again Monday night and Tuesday night to try and make up for lost lines, and again, it's practically all ESL. I don't know what's up with that. I don't think the work is assigned to individual people though, I believe the work is just placed into a "pool" where we all get the dictation from. All of the dictation was really new stuff, too, not the older stuff that we had been typing a few weeks ago. I only typed 3.5 hours Monday night and 3 Tuesday night after seeing the cruddy dictation. And I mean CRUDDY.

a lot of times it is the office staff doing the accounting/billing telling you when they will issue refund, etc. dentist is probably not even aware. i would make him aware and/or office manager aware and i bet they get your check right out.
