In some cases, I think religion is just their latest addiction.

Didn't Stephen Baldwin used to have substance abuse issues? Seems like some of these people just trade in the substance for religion and pursue it with the same enthusiasm.

Neither - it's an addiction. nm

Well, this is a better addiction than that...
nm
I have the same addiction (sm)
I also am a recovering alcoholic, I smoke, and I eat too much so I believe I have an addictive personality. This is just one more thing to add to my list, I guess.
Hopefully we are the best addiction of all! nm

It's an addiction (sm)
As with any addiction, it won't stop until he first admits he has a problem. Good luck.
addiction???
What about getting on message boards all day long, lol? That could be called an addiction too if you put it like that.
Yes, everyone should be careful on the internet, whether it is on myspace or message boards, instant messaging, chat boards, etc. If people and parents have enough brains to know what they are doing and to keep an eye on their kids, then problems will be kept to a minimum.
I personally use it to find old friends from high school and friends I have made through the years and lost contact with. You won't see 100,000 friends on my list, lol. I think that is pretty dumb.
addiction
You are absolutely right about the addiction. If the person does not want to stop, he/she won't. I have been with my recovering addict/alcoholic husband for 25 years now, clean and sober for 23. When he stopped drinking 23 years ago, I did also. He finally hit bottom, three rehab programs and got it finally, after losing weight and almost died. I knew there was a good person underneath the drugs and alcohol and I was right. It is a long road. My husband stopped seeing his friends and family because none of them understood the disease of addiction. We don't get invited to a lot of parties because we don't drink, but that is okay too because not drinking changes your perspective of things also.
All I can say is hopefully the addicts in your life will finally hit rock bottom, get the program and stick to it, but they need support and love from people around them. They also have to give up old habits, friends they drink with or do drugs with, etc. I tried Al-Anon, but I did not care for it, but I did seek counseling from a private counselor who helped me understand the disease of addiction, how not to be a crutch anymore and that helped me. Good luck. It is a long road, but if they can stop, it will be much better life for all around them.
Yes, so trade one addiction for another?

Greed is an addiction too. sm
Not all addictions are to intoxicating chemicals. Greed is definitely an addiction. And the hallmark of addiction to anything is that it never satisfies, but just creates a need for more and more. We seem to be living in an age of pure greed. It is unfortunate.
Funny answer *addiction* - LOL.....nm

HE IS AN ADDICT. Look up the signs of addiction,
about computer addictions. This is a new thing, but TOTALLY an addiction. He is going to have to face the fact that this is an addiction, like an addiction to drugs or porn or gambling. Find and print the sites that list the signs, and put them where he will find them. He has to admit it, or it never ends. My kid is in this hole, and is in therapy, and it is coming to the point that I will have to make the home totally computer free for a while. He has given up personal hygiene, time with friends, all social contacts, school, church, job, everything.
The guy has a big, big problem. You might even consider contacting gambler's anonymous groups, see if they have any contacts for computer addictions. This can be a huge deal, and VERY difficult.
Wow. That's awful. Any addiction can be problematic
It is certainly not to be equated with physical abuse but it is a form of neglect if the game is devouring his every waking minute and taking his attention away from his child. How could you say that playing a video game from the time you arrive home from work until 2-3 in the morning is not a problem? That is the classic sign of an addiction, and even though it is "just a video game," these games can be extremely addicting and addiction almost always leads to bigger problems if it's not nipped in the bud. I think she's doing the right thing by trying to curb this now instead of waiting for it to get even worse.
I don't think it's fair for you to negate her feelings. Since you have been in an abusive relationship before, you should know that addiction can often lead someone to physical abuse as well, whether that addiction is to drugs, booze, porn, or whatever. If a person is addicted and they can't get their fix, they take it out on those around them and sometimes it does escalate to violence.
As someone who as previously abused, I would think you would be greatly interested in seeing that the same does not happen to others and instead would offer up words of encouragement or advice rather than just listing off your experiences and making it seem like no one else's could be anywhere near as important as your own.
In these cases, I always believe that God...sm
Being a God person (tho not religious) I believe that perhaps God has another plan for Dana and Christopher. I always believe that only the good die young.
I feel badly for their 13 y/o son. He has two half-siblings from Christopher's relationship prior to hooking up with Dana. I hope these two older siblings (22 and 26) help with Dana's 13 y/o son. I pray for all of them.
Dana and Christopher - R.I.P.
There have been cases
where boys in this age range die suddenly from heart problems. It just happened this year with a kid in college. When I talked to my family earlier, they said this is what they were thinking might have happened because it was said they thought he was just sleeping. It apparently happens more than people realize...pretty sad.
Where else can you find an addiction that pays by the line?! nm

yes these cases exist, but
in very small number compared with the legitimate serious cases; and the legitimate cases, as another here said, are still just the very TIP of the iceberg.
The 3 cases are all different. Lundsford
was an amber alert and they searched for the child for days before finding her. It also brought out, again, the inadequacy of the system for tracking sex offenders which frequently results in the death of a child.
Holloway was another missing person, but in a resort area where there is minimal crime, according to their reports. They were looking for the missing person.
My question is this? Why would a "little" girl be dead for at least 14 hours, but never be reported as missing by the parents or guardians. In your case, the body has been recovered. It is now up to the police to determine if there was foul play involved or if it was a natural death.
I really think you need to re-examine your motives for posting.
I am not referring to cases
such as you are describing, and I don't get why you're so defensive. Of course that splinter case that you described warrants an ER visit. I am referring to all of the reports that I type of cases that could easily be taken care of by a PCP and in no way should be considered an emergency. Relax...geez.
What about malpractice cases?
If the jury sees a report in "ebonics" vs standard English it - is not going to help that physician's case. When push comes to shove that piece of paper that he dictated/signed is his a vital part of his defense.
It doesn't matter what kind of care the dr gave, if it's not documented in a way that is acceptable to the community it will not "cover" him.
Laptop cases sm
So, I'm getting a laptop for work. Anyone know of cases where the laptop, keyboard, headset, and foot pedal will all fit into. If nothing else at least the keyboard and headset. I could always carry the footpedal seperate or use hotkeys. Something that isn't too terribly big if that is possible.
Thanks!
Robot cases
My MIL has been doing quite a few robot cases at the hospital, and I have never transcribed a report like that, and to those of you who have, how different is a robot surgery than just regular surgery?
In some cases, this is true...sm.
Personally, I don't mind doing ESL doctors or more difficult docs. I can now run through them just like any other. However, others in my company are not the same way. On many occasions I have been requested by physicians (of course this burns the other MTs) to do their dictation. With that I have many recommendations and have been promoted for that reason. I think it really depends on the company and the people.
In cases like that, sammypot
it seems the dictator should be spoken with so that he realizes exactly what has to be done and that a more sensible way to do it should be figured out.
I type legal cases...sm
and I've helped go through the medical records for the cases and I am apalled at the transcription of reports that I've seen for one large, low-paying company in particular. I've been a Transcriptionist for 15 years and I no longer am taken by surprise by the lack of quality work
It's obvious she didn't mean cases
that actually required ER attention. You are just stirring the pot.
Yep, thanks. They bought cases of water before they left.
They are staying at a nice hotel and he is going with kids that he went to high school with and now they are all in college together. They remind of me of 50s kids, their idea of fun a lot of times is to go out for sodas and hamburgers or go to the game.
Although I'm sure there are legitimate cases of ADHD and autism out there,
I find it hard to believe that all the kids who are pigeon-holed into either category actually do suffer from either condition. They seem to have become a catch-all excuse for "my kid doesn't pay attention," or "my kid doesn't behave the way I'd like him/her to".
Our society has come up with so many lame excuses for so many things, and tends to need a "name" or a "title" for everything.
Maybe this child is just one who matures later than others, maybe she needs to have someone sit down with her and take the time to help her focus better instead of immediately labeling her with the condition du'jour.
A good line count is not possible in most cases.
I work on an average of 8 or 9 diffenent accounts a day, with as many as 16. Of course I was promised a "primary".
Our latest cat did that...
Not drink out of the toilet, but about a year ago, she disappeared. She's inside 100% of the time, so she wasn't hard to find, but she was pulling back the blankets on the bed and hiding under all the covers. Sure enough, she was sick and had to be put on antibiotics. I'm sure she would have died if we hadn't taken her to the vet. I also had another cat quite awhile ago that hid whenever he got sick.
I hope your kitty comes home! My husband said that when he was young, they had a cat that would roam and be gone for long stretches of time, but he always came home.
Actually, we have to keep up with the latest
technology, medical terms, etcetera, as well. We do not just go to school and learn everything at once. Things in medicine change often. Plus there are a million things you will learn throughout your career in this field as you go. It is a constant learning experience for both new and seasoned MTs.
Personally, if money were not an object like you said, I would spend my free time relaxing and enjoying being a new mom. If money is not an object, why find something to give yourself even more work? They are only babies once and will be grown in the blink of an eye...enjoy the time you have.
A FEW cases are probably genetic. The overwhelming majority are smokers.

Child sexual abuse cases - used to do them sometimes where I used to work - sm
now do a lot of Trauma ER, it used to bother me a lot, but not anymore unless its kids. Guess I am getting used to all the gunshot and knife wounds in the city nearby, that is sad in itself.
The latest with Keystrokes
New to this site. Read something a while ago about Keystrokes not hiring. Does anyone know anything about them now? How are they to work for and how do they pay? Thanks for any information, good, bad or ugly.
Did you see the latest picture of her (sm)
possibly pregnant, reading the junk magazines while going through the grocery store line?
So very, very few good or talented actors these days. Give me Jerry Lewis or Bill Murray any day. And actresses? I can't even list any I like anymore besides Marily Monroe.
the latest story
another MT friend of mine sent me this email
My friend's daughter works in a dermatology office. They are opening a new additional office. They determined that with the opening of a new office, it was far better to now buy a system for transcribing their own documents and it also allows doctor to input the codes for billing. So, they no longer need their Transcriptionist or their coder. Their coder is going to do other duties at the office and their home transciptionist is SOL.
So-if they had not opened a new office, they would not of put out for the money, but with the new additional office, this system will be taking care of the 2 jobs above for both offices. Doctor was most definitely considering sending all of this kind of work to India, as he is from India, but when the American office manager found this out, she put a stop to it immediately. So-that is my horror story for the week that makes me have even more knots in my stomach.
I'm on their latest upgrade right now..sm..
so it's still buggy. I origiinally bought it in December of 2005. That version was worse than the upgrade I installed Saturday. I won't bother uninstalling and reinstalling after reading your email. Thanks for writing.
I've tried ByteScribe and ExpressScribe and the sound isn't as clear on them, especially when you slow down or fast forward so I'll either stick with StartStop and not use the hot keys or I'll try an external sound card for my laptop with the ByteScribe WavPlayer. I've tried the Turtle Beach Audio and that helped make things louder but it didn't help with the slow down and speed up sound clarity.
Is there anyway you can go back to the original version? If you have the original installtion CD, I would think you could. I don't since I bought it originally in Dec. 2005. Thanks again for writing.
Stedman's does the same thing. With the latest
electronic word books, you can only download 2 times. I have 2 computers and I download to both, in case something happens I have a backup. I also tend to have computer issues for some reason and when I try to do a reinstall of the OS it doesn't keep my Stedman's. Since I can only download twice that makes me not able to use it. I tried to company all Stedmans to a BUS drive in case I had to restall again, but it won't work and you can't copy from one computer to another, you have to have the original disk.
I'm not thrilled with it, but I don't think they are doing anything illegal.
The latest InScribe from Emdat sm
Will work with my USB Infinity pedal as I have just set it up. It will also run with InstanText. QUITE the upgrade from the Emdat I tried to use about 6 or 7 yrs ago I can tell you that. It is MUCH better, user friendly and I think I'll be more productive on it.
doggone, looks like it's the latest version now
I had the same problem, thanks for posting the link. But I downloaded it and it was v.4.15 again! I downloaded Switch and that won't work either.
It's beginning to look a lot like they don't WANT it to work with .dss anymore!
The Latest Word...found it!
It's published by Elsevier. To find the link, just Google The Latest Word. It's only a couple of hits down the search results list. I wasn't able to copy the web site address, since it came in as an RSS feed (ignorant about that). But it's at www.elsevier.something.

Oh, like your latest joke wasn't gross
on the Comedy board!
LOL.
Lately, every week I'm having a techie problem. My latest
is the sound on my computer cuts out for no reason. I just started doing VR this week and the sound disappears. It's not just the program. It's the whole computer. If I reboot, it's back.
I also noticed that, although the work load is heavy, I'm out of work around the same time every day for about an hour or two. Then I'm okay for the rest of the day.
Please don't tell me it's my computer. I can't afford another one at this time of the year.
Please don't tell me it's my sound card...the computer is only 1-1/2 years old.
I have 512 MB RAM. Do you think this is too little for VR? It never happened when I was doing regular transcribing.
Any ideas?
Thanks,S
The latest version sent to me in a link by company is 4.91.309 (must have just come out) sm
I haven't been told anything specific as far as the pedal. All I know is that the new version of InScribe does not support an outside player such as Express Scribe, Gearplayer, etc., and plays directly from the program itself.
From what I can tell, it either will use a regular USB pedal, or it may require a specific pedal just for InScribe that works identical to the "F" keys. I'm just not sure if there is really a difference in the two and was hoping someone would be able to help. The regular USB pedal is cheaper than the specific one I found for InScribe.
Apparently the tech folks at EMDAT are off today, as no one has answered my e-mail regarding this.
Thanks.
The latest version of ES does work with Vista.

This isn't RELIGION 101
This happens to be medical transcription we're talking about....maybe you're one of those recruiters that will hire just about anyone, including illiterate people, to take more of our jobs away....this isn't about JUDGING anyone.....it's only about raising the bar and DEMANDING quality and professionalism from our peers......I wonder what you're work looks like......hmmmmm. I still stick to what I said.....If you can't pass a basic vocabulary test in the ENGLISH language.....MOVE ON!
Religion
Can you spell blasphemy?
On this tight budget, I do not have cable. What is the latest on Katrina?
The message boards have disintegrated into name calling and absurdity. My local stations are not running any news. What is going on down in New Orleans? It is 5:41 PST here and I have just read on a message board they are predicting 10,000 deaths? Surely this is not so
