If you're going to place yourself in a caregiver role,

you need to take into consideration your support system.  You're going to need one.  I was my husband's caregiver until he had to go into skilled nursing, and it was by far more draining (physically, emotionally, spiritually) than I could have ever imagined.  I wish you the best; take care of yourself.

Either way, you're in the wrong place. sm
Please read your own message. You made two errors when you neglected to take out two headers not needed, IMO. I don't mean to be rude, but you said it yourself.
Aye, we're between a rock and a hard place.
I don't know that I'm willing to pay the price anymore. If I can make more money but my capacity for happiness is being slowly crushed out of me, eventually I have to decide whether it's worth it.

The fact that practically nobody is paying a living wage in a given town is another problem entirely, and one that I could rant for days about.
You're welcome. It's a great place to live!

Except in February.  Dang it's cold in February.

Seriously though, I don't lock my doors and if I need to find the car keys, they're in the ignition.

The way I see it, if them fools need thaht cah baahd enuff, might's well let 'em go ahead and have it.

I know which testing place you're talking about, and I won't
test through them either. Most of the bigger nationals go through them now, don't they? The way I feel about it is if I didn't have what it takes to make it in this career field, I wouldn't have lasted this long. Try the smaller MTSOs. The tests are maybe 1-3 little dictation files, the workload is less stressful, and you'll make more money.
You're right about the "prehistoric" part! The place I used to work (sm)
uses Lanier, and it's a mess. It's WORSE than prehistoric. It was down more than it was up. It was also not at all friendly for at-home MTs, either.
You're supposed to plant them in beds and line the bed with chicken wire and then place the bulbs

on top of the wire and cover.  This keeps the critters from getting to them, but is a lot of work.

I know it is not the role
of the hospital, but it makes sense to me that when new physicians sign on at a hospital or new practices are set up that there may be a list floating around somewhere of MTSOs. Thanks for the input though.
Question about role of a TL
I am new to the 'working at home' situation. I have only worked in a hospital setting until recently.  In the hospital there was no team leader. Can someone please explain to me what the role of a team leader is? What types of issues are they supposed to help with.  If I get stuck on a dictation, do I automatically leave a blank or do I contact my TL to see if she can help? Or do I just send it to QA?
Role models
There are a lot of them. I personally know many women whom I admire. But, if we're talking about celebrities, I would say Kathy Lee Gifford for forgiving her husband's infidelity and lying. Also for having the courage to leave a multimillion dollar a year job (Regis and Kathy Lee) and pursue her dreams - writing her own plays, trying a new music style.

I admire Olivia Newton John for surviving breast cancer, raising a child on her own, and just giving the world class and dignity.

I admire Vanessa Williams for surviving the mess after she was de-crowned as Miss America and coming back to have a great career.

I admire Nicole Kidman for handling her separation and divorce from Tom Cruise in a mature manner. No sniping and no name calling.

I admire Lauren Hutton for living her life adventurously and with real compassion and concern for other people. I also like that she refused to fix the gap in her front teeth.

There are a lot of great role models, both men and women.
you need to realize your role, hon
a career you can obtain education for through correspondence schools?? You must be joking if you think you should make more than that. Apply for a promotion if you want more $$$$.

Who are some good female role models today?

I was thinking along that line when there's no role model
Rich kids are raised by nannies, butlers, au pairs, tutors. Parents are hardly there to give them morals.  They learn from the streets and the streets are pretty skanky these days.
i'm glad they gave george that role last
night. him and izzy wanted to become doers and he sure did!  i'm curious to see what they do with his character now...i hated to see the bomb guy get blown up! he was cute. i used to watch him on mysterious ways a long time ago just because he was a cutie!

living is pretty easy here. Low stress..
The position varies from place to place..
Sometimes you end up doing VR, which can be really easy or a real pain. Sometimes you end up simply editing files and all is good. Other times, you end up with more job responsibilities and hours than you ever wanted. All in all better than typing LOL.

Well, you're all complaining that accounts are current and work is low, so, gee, maybe they're
focusing on WORK, as in CLIENT and transcribing, as maybe half of you should be focusing on!!
If you're experienced, try for 9cpl or higher, and you're lucky to get that! nm

You're probably right. Plus we're losing our percentage of good people by .... (sm)
allowing every loser from every 3rd world country on the planet to just stroll on into our country, some legally, most illegally, and take advantage of the social services all us hard working little gerbils pay for by having money taken out of our pay every month. But I don't think we're all lazy. Just the ones on permanent welfare driving around town in brand-new Cadillac Escalades. Saw one just today on the Bayshore Fwy. Brand-new black Escalade with expensive spinner wheels, with 5 or 6 Mexicans in it. Well, who knows - maybe they stole it and it was on its way to a chop-shop. Smart-and-hungry people aren't always hard-working and honest.

You're forgetting all the stuff you can't buy when you're UNEMPLOYED!
Unemployed people have a hard time buying anything, including cheaply made offshore products. How many will have to end up depending on public assistance? That means more tax dollars being eaten up - besides the taxes NOT being collected from the overseas workers. In the long run, are you really enjoying a lower price?

You're not losing it, you're burned out on your main job.
I feel for you... I am having my own "version" ;-) of these kinds of struggles. Lots of recent changes at the admin level have made my job do a 180, going from a really great one to a really crappy one.

For me, it's a struggle to get through the day with a shred of motivation. I get distracted in the way you discuss as well.

I just try to make my environment as comfortable as possible and make the best of it while I decide what the best way is to deal with the burnout... I figure if I can't change my inner brain workings so that I still like this job, I need to find another one, or this feeling will possibly get worse!

I hope it works out for you. Wish I had some better advice for you, but this really does look like burnout and extreme job dissatisfaction to me. We all wear it differently. Try to be good to yourself while you figure out a solution.

Don't know what you're complaint you're making with this post. sm

You stated in your original post that you don't want to work weekends or odd shifts. What is your definition of an odd shift?  Second shift?  Third shift?  Sounds like you want to work M-F on days.  Sounds kind of rigid to me.

Personally I like second shift, so everyone working days means more work for me!

You, well you have obviously put ME in my place
with that little lecture. Since youd didn't say anything meaningful to respond to in all that bandwidth, I won't respond to any of the content of what you said.

But just for your information, your little tyrade had no affect on the reality of what is going to happen, so get over it and get used to it.
I saw that place on TV (sm)
a lot of celebrities own there!
It is most definitely not OUR place to be
making phone calls or turning people in.  The doctors and nurses are trained to do it as part of their job.  If they suspect abuse, drug seeking, whatever, it is up to THEM, not us.

Student Rule #1: Keep your thoughts to yourself when ti comes to CEOs and your opinions. "I read a post by the CEO and felt the need to comment."
I see this is not the place to be
People are right when I have been told - not many nice people in this field. My first week coming on here to look for help and talk to other was this past week and you know what, you can have it. I will look for other places to figure out my problems with work and I suggest you look for help with your personality problems as my work problems do not require nearly the attention your personality does. Good bye and thanks for nothing.
I am not sure if you tried this place..
Did you happen to go into your closet and look for a reference book only to find the administrator of this forum smelling her finger?
I have never been to a place that does that and
would not shop at one.
Not every place is like that at all.
Not very believable.

will not touch you with a 10-foot pole.  I've been in this situation and you will be a no-rehire.
I think I used to be an IC for the same place.
I liked working there, but no time off allowed. One day an MT co-worker of mine got a headache and got in trouble for calling out that day even though she gave plenty of notice early in the morning and they had all day to distribute the work. This is when often-times there was no work at all. I left because after hearing that, I realized I would not be a true IC. Why, as an IC you are supposed to make your own schedule aren't you? And if something comes up isn't it true that you are allowed flexibility? They say it is a small company and everyone is expected to be there for them when the hospital decides to send in the overflow, yet with no notice to the IC. It was too confusing, in may ways worse than employee when at least you know when you are expected to work. Not an IC job at all. Sorry for your experience, but I and many others I know have had the same experience.
not if you get it from the right place
I have bought 2 refurbished computers & both were screaming deals.

I got my desktop from the Dell online outlet & am using it as we speak. I got my laptop from Costco.com & I also still use it every day for personal stuff. They are both going on 5 yrs since my purchase and worked perfectly when I got them & still do. They both cost about half of what brand-new ones would have cost.

Most times "factory-refurbished" means that you also get a manufacturer's warranty -- but not always. I got 1-year warranties on both of mine; Dell also offered an extended warranty purchase at the time I ordered it, which I did get. Some of theirs are refurbished, some are "scratch & dent" or "open box" - which means customer return, but virtually new.

Costco offers a 1-year warranty also. They don't always have a huge number in stock so you may have to keep checking until they have what you want. There are some online sites selling refurbished computers but most have only a 3-month warranty.

I think both sites take trade-ins as well.

Mine are both getting a little old feature-wise, but still work well enough for my purposes, so I suppose I will drive both until the wheels fall off.

If they're withholding taxes, you're not an IC.
As an IC, you should already be paying taxes. That said, the only benefit having them withhold FICA is that your Social Security/Medicare share will be less. Social Security is 15%; if you're an employee, you pay 7.5% and your employer pays 7.5%. As an IC, you pay 15%. Doing the math, 0.0925 would be your 0.10 minus 7.5%--the 0.0924 is just a tad less than you're making now.
