If working in Word, autotext/correct can be used for free, but (smsg)

if you need a separate expander, then I recommend Shorthand. I think their cost is reasonable, and it is user friendly. I've used it for years, and it has worked in numerous different platforms, or if not directly compatible, I could convert my list either way fairly easily. It, too, has a free demo period for 30 days. Aside from Word's own autotext/correct function which is limited in its compatibility to a degree, you aren't going to find a good free one.

There's a free utility you can download to add multiple AutoText ... sm
entries at one time, but you have to format the list manually in a Word document before you can run the macro to upload. The utility only works in versions 2000 to 2003. You would create a 2-column table with your entry name in column 1 and your text in column 2, then run the macro. You can take a pre-made list and convert that to a table, but it's still going to take some manual editing on your part to format the list. It's a lot of work either way. You can find the utility here:

ABCZ lists you can purchase are made to work with ShortHand and Instant Text only. Google Jon Knowles or ABCZ lists.
Word AutoText, AutoCorrect, and Spellchecker, and other Word features
I have just started working for a company that uses Word (my previous experience was HTML-based and had its own autotext and spellchecker).
I have never bought medical spellcheckers nor Instant Text, especially that I have learned a lot from posters here that one could use the autocorrect feature for long words/phrases/paragraphs/templates. I have heard of people saying autocorrect was not meant to be used for such.
I have been browsing some features of shortcuts in Word (using the Assistant), and have discovered that it has AutoText. I tried it by highlighting a whole document (canned procedured), then hit Alt+F3, assigned a code, and voila! I have a template that readily inserts into an open Word document by typing the code and hitting Enter.
Also, I have learned that I can insert empty fields (for variables in my templates like BP/HR/RR/Temp values by hitting Ctrl+F9, then when I have inserted the autotext for a template with such empty fields, I can readily jump from one field to the next (to fill them up with values) by hitting F11 (or Shift+F11 to go to previous empty field).
We do know that many dictators want us to type verbatim even for running sentences, so that I have found the Spelling and Grammar checker feature of Word quite cumbersome. I discovered tonight that I could use just the spellchecker feature by clicking on Tools > Customize, then under Categories, select Tools; under Commands, select Spelling. I dragged that onto my tool bars so I can do a quick spellcheck. Cool thing was, the previous documents I have made with new drug names, etc., which I have spellchecked using a non-Word program, were automatically included in its database (so I do not have to re-enter them as I begin to utilize this feature). Drawback: I could not make a shortcut key for this (have to use the mouse again!)
Then I made my OWN keyboard shortcut for autocorrect by going to Tools>Customize>Keyboard (click on button then another window appears), Under Categories, choose Tools; under Commands, choose AutoCorrect. Under Press new shortcut key, assign the shortcut you want (F key, Alt or Ctrl + desired key), then click on Assign button.
Well, that is all I can share for now. I have learned a lot from posters here, and I hope I have added some info, especially for Word users like me who can be categorized as average.javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
Autotext not working properly
Does anyone know whay might be wrong with my autotext? I have several set up in WORD. I have it setup so when you start entering the text, it will show a balloon popup and you can hit enter or F3 and the entire autotext will populate. However, this will only work if at the beginning of a new paragraph. I can't seem to get it to work in the middle of a paragraph after a sentence.???? Any thoughts? Would appreciate emensely!

Word XP/autotext help
Is there a way of using autotext so that it will come up in the font that you are typing in? Some doctors use arial and some use times new roman and if I use my autotext it automatically comes up in whatever I created it in, not necessarily what I am currently typing in. Is there a way to change that? Thanks for helping.:)

Copying Word Autotext? Can anyone help?
Can anyone tell me how to copy my autocorrect entries? Word help says to make it into a template but don't know how to do that. I'd appreciate any help very much!
I use AutoCorrect and AutoText on Word sm
It isn't as limited as you might think. If you have over 225 characters in your selection or have blank lines, etc. you need to check "formatted text." You can also put it in AutoText and once you start typing the first few letters a box will come up with the rest of the text and if you want to insert it, you just press enter. I have many, many entries in both AutoCorrect and AutoText. I like it much better than the ShortHand program I bought, though I do need that to transfer text to the Word program that work uses between emails, etc. That may be because I've used Word for years and am used to it.
Try googling copy autotext in Word
You should get a link that gives instructions. Hope this helps. I copied mine recently on a disc with no problem.
Which one -- AutoCorrect or AutoText? Word version?

Also, Word has the AutoCorrect and AutoText--see inside
Also, Word has the excellent AutoCorrect (for expanding words like "tp" into "the patient"). It is an excellent help, the only downside being that it maxes out at about 7000 entries.
Also, for longer portions of type, like something a doctor says over and over, there is AutoText in Microsoft Word. Just put the paragraph or sentence or whatever in th AutoText, and the next time the doc says it, you can put it in.
Also, you can save complete documents in Word that you may use again- like psychiatric tests that they do-- you can just open that document and rename it a new name (keeping the old document as the template, like "Dr Smith Psyc tests" and then rename it when you do it to something new- and you can have all your margins, test headings, tabs, etc.
I would not work without these 3 things being available--AutoCorrect, AutoText, and the ability to store documents that I might want to use again.
So, I'd just drag them into the 21st century! It is actually ridiculous. Would their programmer(s) work without their production shortcuts? They have plenty of them. Ask them not to use any, to type every / and etc. and have no canned programming stored, and see how they like it. Arrogant snobs.
word has both autotext and autocorrect plus macros
I really don' t see all that much need to buy a ShortHand program, especially when you are just starting out and probably put out a lot of money already. Just click on your toolbar, click on autocorrect, and you will get a menu that you can use to add in your new expansions.
if you would like to access this toolbar from your keyboard, you can create a macro that will do this.
Sub ATxtShow() Dialogs(wdDialogToolsAutoCorrect).Show End Sub
Paste this into your macro editor, and now record a "hot key" macro on whatever key(s) you would like to use. I use alt-5, but you can use any alt or control key combination you have free.
I certainly hope this macro posts properly, I tried 3 times to post a macro that to count characters, and each time a quote mark was removed by the system, but I hope this will post properly. I will follow up on this immediately after posting and make sure it is correct.
Word expander list for Autotext?
Is there a way to add a premade list of words or phrases to Autotext (not Autocorrect)? I need that little suggestion box to pop up for me. Is there a way to do this or do I need to add every word individually?

Then they need to go about it the correct and LEGAL way. I pay taxes to give them free sm
benefits when they are illegal and don't even pay taxes, but yet I am told I will have no social security even though I have paid it in for over 20 years. They want to come over here to live, they should start by learning our language and then getting themselves LEGAL and paying taxes like all of the LEGAL people here do. I am struggling and I can get no benefits, but they don't even have to be legal to get them. Big sign at the DHS office that says, we can help you even if you are not legal.
Pretty soon we will be working for free!
Next they will be mailing out statements for how much we owe them to work. This is getting stupid. Is this every MQ office?

How do you get a free attorney if you are solvent and working? SM
Even if you have stuff like a nice car, a nice home, charge cards that you pay for every month, you still may not have money for a lawyer. Never mind about irresponsibility living too close to the edge. A lot of us do that.
Misha, you're almost working for free--
--doing this. There are many general transcription companies that pay real money. I know, because I work for a couple. General transcription is a real industry with real people supporting families with their income. Whoever is paying this low a wage is LAUGHING at your gullibility.
Any MTSO would know that.... smsg
it takes a lifetime ++ to know it all. The medical field is far too vast for anyone to ever know it all. One can be in this business for 25 to 30 years and still not know it all. I do believe, however, that a successful MT will do what he/she does best. I know a lady who has been doing op notes for 30+ years, and she is very successful; but when it comes to the off-the-beaten path of op notes, she would have to stop and do some research. I also have a relative who has been in the business since 1965, doing a wide variety of clinic notes, and you couldn't out clinic her, no way!!! She has recently gotten into procedure notes - does them like a charm!
On another note, these 2 ladies have done the good, the bad, and the ugly, but they have had enough sense and experience to stay away from those places that dish up nothing but the ugly and ugliest. We all know they're out there, and there is no living to be made on that stuff!

The correct word is,
of course, coarse. It is very rare to find a company that provides samples good enough for a picky MT to use as provided. It seems to be politically incorrect to fix the samples ... except for yourself. So that's what I do - I remake the normals in my own ShortHand system and use those.
Auto Correct in Word
I use auto correct in Word to make my macros. Is there any way to save this info in the event that my computer were to crash. This has happened before and I've had to enter all of my macros again on a new computer (quite a hassle). I appreciate any info.
Thanks,
If you are using Word use auto-correct to
get you started. - make tp the patient, etc.
Start with just a few additions - the ones that you use most often. Add 5 or 10 a week. Make you a sticky note and stick on the monitor if you need help remembering. Use those 5 to 10 for a week and then add a few more the next week.
As someone else stated I would get an expander. Auto correct does the same thing as an Expander but has limited space, so if you utilize a lot of auto-corrects/expansions you'll run out of room and have to switch over to an expander anyway.
Same situation with me - seems like every other word I have to correct! nm

I do agree, though, it's not "that" big of an accomplishment in the everyday world. Kind of like CMT... , although I would use that in something like a cover letter for a resume.
I always correct them. Guess I'm too a@al to put in the incorrect word. nm

expanders vs MS Word Auto Correct
Hello everyone .... I've been using MS Word's auto correct feature as my expander. Is it 'just as good' as using an Expander ? Of course my line count is lousy per hour - but I don't do the same account regularly, and I don't get many ops (standard formats).
Please tell me if / why I should change to an expander - and which one works best. Remember PRD for DOS - I loved it. Is there a Windows version?
Thanks, Susie
Auto correct in Word and a TON of macros....
auto correct in word 2007
- Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
- In the Word Options dialog box, click Proofing, and then click AutoCorrect Options.
Also, you can't use Word for correct line counts
It doesn't deduct headers, footers, formatting commands. Extext line count deducts those depending on company setup.
1099 form? I did IC work for an MT company a few months (smsg)

Fluctuance IS a real word and positively correct. SM
Fluctuance IS a real word - meaning that when the wound is palpated (touched), there is a wave-like feeling. See my cite of Stedman's MEDICAL DICTIONARY in the previous post for the definition.
Flocculence is listed in the Online Medical dictionary as a variant of flocculation:
The rapid precipitation of large amounts of a solute out of a solvent.
Stedman's MEDICAL dictionary has no definition for "flocculence." The dictionary.com entry of "a fluffy or woolly appearance" has no relation to PALPATION of a wound.
Stedman's definition of "flocculant" is "Resembling tufts of cotton or wool; denoting a fluid, such as the urine, containing numerous shreds or fluffy particles of gray-white or white mucus or other material." This has NOTHING to do with PALPATING a wound!
I guarantee that "fluctuance" is correct.
The correct word is shotty - like buckshot - not shoddy.

I built my own using the auto-correct function in Word. (sm)
I removed most of the words that came with auto-correct, and replaced them with my own short macros, which consist of words, phrases, & short sentences. Little or no memorizing involved, because I made them up as I went along whenever I kept getting the same things over and over again, and got tired of typing them. For longer macros I just put them in a document file that I can copy and paste. Simple. And CHEAP!
Open Word, click on Auto Correct, then..
click on the words you do not want and click Delete.
downloading free word program
has anyone ever used open office to download word so a test can be taken? I rent a computer from my company and I know I probably should not do this. My question is would they know if this is being done? Thank you.
Word will not correct two letters in caps. You must type a third letter for
that feature to kick in. You need to practice letting up on the Shift key sooner or you need a macro to go through your document to fix all of those instances.
Word 2000 and later does not cap after colons or numbers followed by punctuation even if you have that option turned on in Tools. You can use the change case command of Shift + F3 immediately after typing the first word to get a cap. I use Instant Text and there's a feature in that program that automatically fixes the cap issue in Word. Otherwise, you need a macro to go through the document and change that as well.

you shouldn't struggle with having problems. support is there to help us and they are good at their job. as with any new acct, there are always gonna be some kinks. i had some to work out as well with my end of the system. it doesn't sound like something you can fix; probably something with how the two tie in together. did you log out and back in and see if that helped?

If you are working in Word...
Hello
I am not sure if you are the one who posted this on the equipment board or not, but I will repeat my reply to a similar question on that board......I use the AutoCorrect feature in Microsoft Word. You have to build your own entries, but once you have done that, it is great. I have a doctor who says a lot of the same phrases over and over. For instance, he says, "Thought processes are goal directed." I type in "tp" and it types out that entire sentence. If you use Word as your word processor, than this feature is free! The other way I use it, is for expanding words, such as depression...depn... I use the first 3 letters of the word and the last letter. This usually works pretty well. One more... preoccupied..'pred.' If you have any further questions, please let me know. I spent over $100 on an expander, and I like AutoCorrect better.

If you are working in Word,
the menu across the top starts with File, then Edit, then View . . . this is all without clicking on anything.
If working in MS Word, go to (sm)
Tools and scroll down to Auto Correct. If the first option given has a check mark next to it, uncheck it. This should correct it. If not, please get back to me for an alternate method. Good Luck.
