If they choose to use the MTs/other staff instead of trained coders, then it will ultimately only come back to haunt them in the end when they aren't getting the proper reimbursements for their claims. There is a lot to keep current on. I recall Medicare/Medicaid guidelines changing on a near-constant basis, and that was MANY years ago. That's why doctors really need someone who is specifically trained and experienced in this. As someone said, you have to use just the right code with just the right diagnoses to get the max benefit.

However, I agree they're most likely looking to save a buck, so if they can't see that by saving a few bucks there, they're probably losing bucks in the long run, that's their problem. Experienced coders would bring in higher payments and better reimbursements, so there's not much logic there.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it, though, I think you might consider moving on. That's 2 strikes now (combined with no spellcheck), so it makes you wonder how many more "surprises" they have in store for you! What kind of pay are they giving you for this dual role?
