I give ours gift certificates to the local teacher supply store.
One year, we also gave a teacher a gift certificate to PetCo (for the class bird!).
Well, if someone doesn't give a
cr@p, then they shouldn't be in that job.
Doesn't he have his own NEUTS? Why should I have to give him some?

I LOVE shopping for clothes at resale stores
I find fashionable, barely worn, name brand clothes. It really is fun!! I couldn't imagine paying for new clothes anymore!
It's a little harder to find good kids' clothes at the second hand stores, but I have found some really nice ones that are real bargains.
QuickCorrect doesn't give you as much as a real expander does
Personally I give less credibility to anyone who doesn't spell check
Especially someone who has been put in a management position. Just makes them look stupid and "slip shoddy", as you say.
Doesn't it give you the option of printing all the forms and schedules?

I just work with ShortHand minimized. Smarttype doesn't work the same way? nm

I work for a local hospital,
not a company. I know to stay away from Transcend.
local hospital work
i moved from a large city to a small town and i'm thinking about doing what you did. try to go to work for the local hospital. would have to probably work a set schedule, but the town is small so it's not like i'd be driving a long distance and i could go home for lunch. i don't have benefits right now and that's scary, so i'm leaning that way.
I work for a local clinic.
I've been doing the same doctors' dictation for over three years, so I have lots of normals and shortcuts for their standard stuff. For some of the docs, I can generate a whole page of dictation with a couple of Keystrokes and just edit for an individual patient's particulars. For all the docs, I can generate phrases, sentences, or paragraphs with a couple of keystrokes. This makes the work go very quickly. Also, a few of the docs I get regularly are VERY long-winded, so their dictation is very lucrative. These doctors are very set in their ways and have resisted all the blandishments from the nationals and VR salespeople. I think a lot of that resistance is that they don't want to spend money on the technology that would require. They're still using tapes. As long as they want to do it that way, I'll be happy to do their transcription. In the meantime, I'm investing every penny of my transcription money and not getting used to the extra income for day-to-day spending. I know the golden goose won't last forever, so I don't want to get used to it. Check with individual clinics in your area, you may be able to find a similar opportunity. Good luck to you.
I work as an IC for a local clinic
I get 0.12 per gross line. Because of the format the clinic wants, the longest possible line is 55 characters (with spaces). To there.
I also work for a local hospital which is
growing in volume of work minute by minute. We have 52 remote transcriptions and still we need to send out work to two venders.
Chapter 13 here
I did a Chapter 13 right before the new laws came into effect and though I could have qualifed for a Chapter 7 I feel better about myself paying something back to everyone. A few things to look out for about credit counseling as I tried this prior to the bankruptcy. This was due to an ugly divorce and my ex had a rich Mommy who paid his attorney bills and cost me 14K plus but I was able to keep the house. (yes he had the new life and the girlfriend, I had the bills). Anyway, credit counseling was going to cost between $75 to $300 for them to manage my money and pay my bills. I did the lower one for a while but some of my creditors would NOT work with them. Also remember if a credit card company decides to give you a discount if you pay the balance, the amount that they write off has to be declared as income. Say you owe $7,000 to a company and they say if you pay us $5,000 -- then $2K of that is consider income to YOU at tax time. I pay the courts $300 a month and for 36 months. It was not easy but like I said I have my home, my business and have found that you can live without credit, save for a car or large purchase and save. So to me that was the answer. I can still hold me head up as they are getting something. So talk to a good attorney and he will advise you. The good thing about this is that you can't live off your credit cards and it does get you back to budget and cash that hopefully after doing for 3 years you will just continue with it. I was told once by a banker that the bankruptcy looks better on your credit report that late payments or credit counseling but who knows for sure. Nowadays you might have to pay a few perentage points higher for a loan but you can get it if you want it.
Take care good luck.
chapter 13
I've checked the archives on this, and have received a lot of helpful information, but I'm interested in learning more. How hard is it to qualify for this? I'm sure I would qualify, but I would like things to start happening now...not 6 months down the road. Are lawyer fees owed up front? Who do I talk to about this?
A little history...I worked full time for a local ortho office, and decided to work part time from home. I had 2 small children, but my husband is home most evenings, so working a few hours a day wasn't a big deal. Well, we unexpectedly got pregnant about a year ago, and we now have added expenses with the new baby, as well as the fact that I don't have as much free time to type. I'm trying to sell our car right now, but so far there are no bites (it's an SUV, and with gas prices people aren't wanting to buy them anymore). Anyway, I talked with a credit counseling agent a few weeks ago, and have made my first payment. However, I am getting calls from creditors saying that I have payments overdue, and when I told them that we are going through a credit counseling agency, they said that they denied the proposal, and I have to make the payment.
I'm at my wit's end, and literally don't know what to do. We own a small (1100 sq. ft) 3 bedroom ranch, and would really like to keep it if possible. I can't work full time with 3 kids, because all my money would just go to childcare.
Any advice would really help me at this point! Thanks!
chapter 13
I filed a Chapter 13 1 1/2 years go. I pay the courts $300 per month to pay my creditors which included past due house and taxes. To me it was worth it as I am repaying something rather than nothing and there was no question about keeping my house. In Chapter 7 you can only have so much equity, etc. Although I did qualify for that, it was close and after a long, ugly divorce I did not have to "prove it again" if you know what I mean. I did have to pay for filing fees up front, around $500 I think but the rest of the attorney fee is rolled into the monthly amount. Again, to me I feel better repaying something rather than nothing. E-mail me with specific questions if you want. Patti
Chapter 13 vs 7
The reason that I went Chapter 13 was because I was told that you could not include taxes in a Chapter 7 unless they were 7 to 10 years old. Was told that child support, education loans and taxes were very hard to include (if not impossible) in a bankruptcy. I had no trouble with them when I did my Chapter 13 but I only owed for one year, filed in February and owed for the year previously. You need to get out your BK papers and see if the IRS was listed and included, talk with your attorney that is what you paid him for and go from there. Good luck.

I work for a small local company.
It seems that the smaller MTSOs pay better than the nationals. Maybe that would be a good avenue for you to try. I just think the low rates offered by the nationals are insulting.
Who me? No, I work for a local nephrology office.
Never worked for Spheris.
chapter 13 & refund
I am told that you have to send a copy to your Chapter 13 Trustee every year for three years. If you get a refund they will hold it -- which I think is fair and I have no problem them doing it as I want to pay off what I can to the creditors. You can get back part of the refund if you owe state or city taxes. Your friends did something wrong and fradulent. I have not heard of one who got back their entire refund but I don't know everyone. But my attorney definitely told me that for three years if I have anything coming, I will not get it. I work both as an employee and have my business. I just estimate and don't overwithold.
Local clinic does it. There is a coordinator who distributes work to us
and deals with the blanks in reports, etc. I am not sure what she is paid but it seems she is content. This clinic had in-house MTs ten years ago and then sent everyone home to type. Now, they are over the internet. Radiology group in town does this too. They just hired someone from Georgia (we are in Calif) to type for them over the internet. I think they use PC AnyWhere. Clinic uses Citrix.
I only have dial-up, I work for a small local MTSO -sm
that uses a FTP site to send us our work, so dial-up is just fine for that (work is about a 20 hour TAT, so it does not matter how long it takes for me to download my work, and uploads are quick. So obviously a job that has no set hours, etc. is ideal for someone with dial-up. Also get your own accounts, then it doesn't matter does it as you are the boss. I have 1 account of my own and we transfer the files via the internet through an intermediary website (in place of a FTP). Just keep hunting there are dial-up jobs out there.
If you cant get a job inhouse, go to a local company and work in their house.
A lot of people who I went to school (college) with ended up working for a local company to Jackson, MS, MidSouth Transcription. They worked with you and got you ....further trained shall we say. We had school, real college courses, so we were very well-trained (had to take an anatomy and physiology class that was the same as the premed students) - we knew a LOT but Ms. Torri got us employable. Try a local transcription company for a while. It will help, I promise.
I guess because I work for a local group of doctors
I have an overabundance of work and would love a break. Too back I can't subcontract work (I'm an employee). I have had as many as 250 patients in one week. Today is a low day with just 26 patients coming in, but a lot of days it's upwards of 50 patients so I have 50 reports to type in a given day.
Local clinic sent all work to the Phillipines one sunny day. Left their MTs
It is not only India. I really cannot say there is an answer other than find politicians who feel as deeply about the "Employ America" slogan as the American worker and American business owner who is a patriot.
Write it off. And be careful who you work for. I had the same problem with local company.
What's your time worth to take these people to small claims court? And what was pointed out to me after doing the research is even if you win in small claims court, there is no way to collect it. Since the company is a bad debt anyway, they aren't going to pay you because you win a small claims court judgement.
I did Chapter 7 a year ago and I do not regret my decision..sm
I was in huge credit card debt and medical debt and after paying just the interest for years I decided bankruptcy was the best option. I have since cleaned up my credit, payed my bills on time, and bought a new car. I have no credit cards and no stress!! Sometimes bankruptcy is the best option. When people tell you that banktruptcy will ruin you and you will never get a house, car, loan, etc., it's not true! Sure your interest rate will be high for a while, but life does go on!
If you want to work at a local hospital or doctor's office, go to community college. Otherwise
if you want to work from home, for a national company, you need to take the course from either Andrews School or M-TEC. It does you no good to save money by taking the Penn Foster course, because most companies will NOT hire grads from that school, it is a poor course and does NOT prepare you sufficiently for MT work.
We couldn't keep up interest & attendance to keep the chapter going. This was years ago. nm

That doesn't work either around here....sm
A few years ago I was working the 2nd shift and put huge signs up asking people to not ring the doorbell because I was working and I had given my neighbor the candy that was to be given away on my behalf... neighbor even told the brats when he gave it to them that it was from my house as most people get to his door before mine and they still ignored the information they had been given.
If we didn't have 400 kids come through I wouldn't mind - but there are apartment complexes abutting our subdivision and the people from the apartments dump their kids by the car loads onto our subdivision to get the candy. Our neighborhood association wishes it could block off the street for this 1 night a year to keep these goobers out! I don't mind giving candy to the kids that I know but not to the rest of the world.
Yes, we see, as you go doesn't work very well, does it??? LOL!

No, doesn't work. Thanks, anyway. nm

Okay, you work doesn't need QA because YOU are the QA...
and I should come down off my high horse?
You have waaaaaay more education, so you automatically assumed that you could be an MT without any kind of MT training? See, that's the problem, your attitude. "Anybody can be an MT -- medical terminology, ha! I've got a degree in tiddlywinks, surely I can do medical transcription."
Oh and your doctor never complains because he wouldn't know a misspelling or a grammatical error if it bit him in the... Most doctors are far too busy to bother with such nonsense. That's why they hire us because they hope we know what we are doing.
Oh and FYI, I do own my own business. I am a QA consultant. I offer my services to MTSOs for a fee. I randomly QA their MTs and find those things the QA staff is missing because they are too busy filling in the million and a half unneccessary blanks left in reports by careless MTs. I also keep one full-time, employee status job for the benefits and the steady pay-check.
doesn't work... sm
I posted below; read that for more info.
Even with the best dictator and the newest version of Dragon (which I use), while it CAN be done logistically, VR is not to the point where it understands naturally spoken English, even with the most clear speech. A person has to dictate in a very artificial manner. If the dictator knew in advance to dictate that way, maybe. But not very likely.
I have to speak in a very distinct manner when redictating my work.
doesn't work for me
if I type 3yo, it shows just that...it won't expand out to -year-old. And when I type 3 yo it leaves the space between the 3 and -.
doesn't let you work
My husband used to be like that until he was diagnosed 10 years ago with bipolar disorder. He is also on disability and he knows that I really have to work, since I pay most of the bills. He makes me breakfast and my 25 year old daughter who is still home shares with him the dinner meals. So I just make sandwiches for lunch and that's it. My daughter goes grocery shopping on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, as she works.
We have a great life NOW.
I wish you the best.
I work for 2, one knows, the other doesn't sm
One is an employee situation and I am not bound by contract not to work anywhere else, but I simply don't talk about it. My lead MT knows I work for someone else, but by the number of lines and time I put in, it would be hard to tell sometimes.
The PT job knows well about the other job and sometimes they forget I work a split and I have to go back, but usually this is not a problem.
There is a company who refused to hire me about 9 months ago because of who my FT is. I would have been considered to be "working for the competition" like this is a problem, as I keep my mouth SHUT and I don't talk about accounts from one company with the other company. I have some ethics and I took this personally. Give me some credit for some discretion and for some integrity!!
doesn't work for me
I have tried to save it just in Word when I am out of the platform and it doesn't work when I reopen Word in or out of the platform. I sent a message to my employer but haven't heard anything back yet.
6 WEEKS...IT DOESN'T WORK...... sm
the "reason" it doesn't work is because it's been sitting in the box for 6 weeks. LOL ! If I ever put my cookies down long enough to open it, I'll let you know.
This doesn't necessarily work for others, but ...
when I feel upset, overwhelmed, or down about my situation, I try to think of how worse others may have it. For instance, maybe your husband is facing 6 weeks of recovery from surgery... but somewhere out there somebody's husband has been delivered a grim prognosis and would give anything for a 6 week "recovery."
You say you're an orphan... But looking on the positive side you do have a husband and children (however trying they may be at times), and someday they will have spouses and children and your family will be ever larger. That's a good thing.
Again, not to diminish your problems in any way, just trying to share how I sometimes help myself through tough times, by reminding myself that things can actually be much much worse.
doesn't work, hopefully he will learn....nm

Mine doesn't work either
Mine does the same thing. I think if you don't work on site, and just dial in, it won't keep track. That's what the Lanier guy told me when he came to set me up, but when I worked in the hospital, it did keep track.
been there done that ...doesn't work...only causes more chaos...sm
but thanks for the advice. It's crossed my mind a million times...
Two wrongs just don't make a right...ever... To me...the only one being childish is the greedy cherrypicker...not the mature person trying to find a peaceful solution.

*67 doesn't work on 800 numbers
Corporate numbers, 800 numbers, and government numbers often use a different form of caller ID. It's called a WATS line, and it records the originating phone number of EVERY call, not just the un-hidden ones.
Do this instead, if you decide to report something anonymously:
Go to a Dollar General, Family Dollar, whatever, and buy a Tracfone for $10. Activate it online from a public WiFi spot such as Panera's (NOT from your home desktop computer).
Use the Tracfone to call the 800 number. Throw away or give away the Tracfone after that - don't use it for anything else. Remove the battery immediately after the call. Place the call from a location as far away from your physical location of residence as possible.
Why doesn't she take the PC into the pool , that might also work...nm

Buy local. The local stores pay taxes to support your city and state. (SM)
Using online and catalogues does nothing to promote the local economy. We complain about outsourcing and about the big companies gobbling up all the work so the jobs at local hospitals are gone, yet we do the same thing when we buy on ebay, catalog, and these web sites that may be located any place in the world as their primary business location.
