If I read you right - Excel ?

Posted By: Patti on 2007-07-28
In Reply to: Excel question - Rad MT

If I am reading you correctly and if not sorry --but if you do not need every report divided but the entire month or a section of the spreadsheet -- what I do is I enter the lines and at the bottom I have a total of B1.B65 (sum=(B1:B65) then the next cell I have it * my cpl (I have gross lines) but if you are doing 65 cpl, then you would put in your total characters, the spread sheet would total on line B66 and then B67 you write formula to divide sum=(B66/65)by 65 and then B68 would be  sum=(B67* cpl).   I enter daily line counts by doctors and have then total vertically and horizontally so I get totals by doctor and by day and then month total.  This probably sounds very confusing but you can E-mail me if you have specific questions.    Patti

Yes, I have Excel
but I am a total Excel n00b and don't use it if I have to. Is this something that can be converted to an Excel file, sorted there, and reloaded to MSWord?
Go to the Excel help and in the
It will bring up a list of different instructions for labels. Hope this helps. It really is not very hard to do. Good luck
You can do this if you have Excel.
There are templates on the MS site that you can download to make your forms look more professional.

After you do your one cell with multiplication/division formula, just copy it to the ones you want it to work in. Copy and past.
Excel question

I know a little bit about Excel, but not a whole lot. I'm trying to learn from books and through trial and error, but it's slow going.

So here's what I want to do:  I need to set up a spreadsheet so I can record date, exam number, number of characters, divide number of characters by 65 to get number of lines, multiply lines by 10 cents to get amount for each report.

I know how to set up individual cells to divide or multiple, but how do I set them up for the entire spreadsheet, or at least within a range of, say, 100 cells/rows?

TIA!

don't have Excel, but working on it.
Thanks for your help. It took about 20 minutes to decide whether or not I have Excel on my computer; wasn't even sure where to look. I found something called openoffice.org that looks like a generic version and I'm trying to see if that will work. If not, I suppose a trial version, just to get the list organized, right? Thanks so much for your help!
excel spreadsheet
It is a simple Excel spreadsheet with 5 columns. First column is the date. Second column is daily lines. Third column is lines to date. Fourth column is daily money. Fifth column is money earned to date.

I'll just give you the formulas of how I did mine, but I start at cell B5 for first date and all formulas are based off that. If you start someplace else, it won't work. Also I have a 15 or 16 day pay period, so I keep this at 16 days.

In cell B5, I put the first date of pay period. Then copy cell B5 and paste down the column from B6 to B20. Excel will automatically change the dates down the column. On the next pay period, I only have to change the first date, and the rest change automatically.

Column C is for input of daily counts, so nothing to do there.

In cell D5, I put =C5. In cell D6, put =C6+D5. Then copy D6 and paste from D7 to D20.

Column E is daily money, so I will give formula with a 10 cpl rate. But obviously, put whatever your line rate is here. In cell E5, I put =C5*.10 Then copy E5 and paste from E6 to E20.

Column F, in F5 put =E5. In cell F6 put =E6+F5. Then copy F6 and paste to F7 through F20.

I also have totals at bottom. In cell D22, I put =D20. And in cell D23, I put =d22*.10 Those are formatted in a big, bold font so they jump out at me.

Long-winded but if you know Excel and use the same cells as I, it should work. I start in B column because I think it is easier to read, and I have headings, titles etc. in first 4 rows.

Making labels in Excel sm
One of my clients uses Medical Manager software and they want to make a list of docs in Excel. I don't think you can copy from Med Man but is there an easy way, say out of  the "Little Blue Book", etc. to make labels or at least addresses of area docs without killing oneself? E-mail or just answer on board, I am trying to help them and save them some time. They are insisting on using Excel and I don't know that program.
I use an Excel workbook file

on my laptop (not the work computer) with 2 different spreadsheets for each account.  I list dictator-specific shortcuts and notes on one, and general account specifics on the other.  I also have one spreadsheet in the workbook for "terms"...with multiple columns for different categories (derm products, lab nomenclature, vaccination drugs, etc.)  Finally, I have a worksheet for "blanks" with specific but common quotes from dictators and the correctly typed translation.

I am up to about a dozen spreadsheets in this one workbook file, but it is quick and easy to bring up the one I need and keep it in front of me as I move from client to client.  Good luck.

Fastest/safest way via Excel
Assuming:
- your physician names in a table / list with firstname, lastname, specialty, address1, address2, etc. in their own columns?
- you are able to sort / modify the data
- you are interested in having a better way to find the ESL / "difficult" spellings

a. Which tool to use for list management?
I strongly recommend you keep the raw data in an Excel table for safety and speed of sorting. I just ran a test with just over 14,000 rows in a Word table - for sorting by specialty/last/first name. In Word, it crashed once and took more than 3 minutes to sort the second try. Same function in Excel is stable and takes only seconds.

b. How to most safely sort the list?
You can use VERY simple macros within Excel to select the entire list then sort by:
- last / first / specialty
- specialty / last / first
- etc.
Then, assign each macro to an on-screen button labeled according to how it sorts, e.g.:
[sort by specialty] [sort by lastname] [etc]

c. What about "difficult" last names?
You could add a column to the list for "sounds like" and as you encounter new physicians whose names don't look like they sound, enter what the physician says -- or what you would guess -- the name sounds like. You could enter a representation of the whole name, or just the first couple of syllables, e.g.
- for written Wojcicki use a sounds like of voychits or voychitski

If you are interested in getting these (or some variant) into practice, reply here or contact me off list, I'd be glad to help further.
Excel works great too, has a template too.

Is each address on a separate line? And do you have Excel?
/
Depending on what is wanted by the office, I have an Excel spreadsheet-sm
that has the date of service, pts name, line count. At end of pay period, I total lines.

Then in a Word document that looks like this, I fill in info and send in for payment---

DATE OF SERVICE: ---- TO ----
TOTAL LINE COUNT:
AMOUNT DUE:
DATE OF INVOICE:

I then print and keep both sets.
I made up my own abcz list; based on yrs of how it's already stored on Excel.

You need a macro to rearrange the name. Excel makes it easier to extract first or last names. nm

Yes, I read your post, and I just re-read it, and I've copied and pasted for you in case

you've forgotten your own words! Your post above is 100% different "flavor" to it, now all positive and cheery! Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! Here is your quote:

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer.

How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! You know exactly what I'm talking about, cause you added some sugar to your second version! And that's much nicer than the first!

Oh I've read that site and continue to read it...sm
I agree...much motivation there. I have tried to quit numerous times in the past and did successfully quit when I was pregnant for the first time many years ago but I have never managed to summon up the strength or resolve to stay quit. Thus the "need" for a financial investment in my efforts. It somehow makes it more motivational to know that I have $$$ invested in this effort over and above the $$$ saved on cigarettes.

Works is a dumbed down version of Word and Excel. You get the full version of Word in the Suite.
The Works Suite is a cheaper way of getting a full version of Word if you don't want or need the other applications in Office.
I didn't read the other posts but just read this
My daughter got pregnant at 17, said she wanted an abortion but BF didn't. I have a wonderful 2-1/2 yo grand daughter that I don't think I could live without...and now, guess what? I don't. I have custody of her. She was dropped off on my door, I got court ordered temporary custody and final custody hearing in a month.

I'm single with no family support. I had just taken a new MT job one month before this happened and they have been wonderful during my adjusting to being a mom again and I hope I can resume a normal schedule by next week.

I'm passing no moral judgments or giving moral advice. The situation is what it is. My prayers are with everyone involved.
Definitely an eye-opening read. Having my teens read it, too. nm

Changing Excel 2003 Addresses Into Word 2003 Addresses

Hello !

I have a large amount of addresses listed on an Excel 2003 spreadsheet.  I need these addresses for Word 2003 letters.  I end up copying the address from Excel and pasting it into Word, but as you can imagine, the pasted address is in a straight line and I end up having to type the address so it displays correctly for a letter.  Does anyone know if there is a simple way to change the Excel address format to a Word letter address format?  Thank you for your help.

Yes she did. Read over and over.

If you are the transcription supervisor I would strongly advise you to please review the reports carefully - do this around the end of the first month or second month. The reason I say this is because for the first few weeks an outsourcing company will QA just about every report so that it looks great, gains the confidence of the client, etc. I have worked with many, many hospitals as a consultant and notice this to be the pattern.

After you have found the multiple mistakes, bring these up to the administration and ask to have a deduction from the bill.

I have had to point out to a few hospitals that use the overseas transcription that they are putting the doctors at malpractice risk. One hospital even ended up paying the outsource company $262 for the month because they had so many mistakes in the transcription and each line that had an error was deducted from their original bill. You can bet that company did a turnaround the following month with nearly no errors. I'm not afraid to tell you the company - CBay.
You need to read up on how (sm)
perverts select their victims.  They don't just assault randomly unless they are planning to kill you afterward.  They specifically target those who they think will not stand up for themselves or children who have nobody to stand up for them!  Your pappy there has had permission from both his wives to assault others under their roof and he is going to get worse if you don't stop him now.  He's not senile, he's not demented, he is a disgusting pervert who has been molesting children his entire life!  No "mother" would allow this sort of thing to happen to their child, and it doesn't matter if you are 5 or 55!  Do you REALLY believe that his own children were not molested?  The only reason his daughter didn't admit it to you is because she'd have to tell you the gory details and didn't want to have to go there, much like you don't want to tell your family something he SAID to you.  I guess if you're that worried about what your "mother" will think, then go ahead and get felt up for the rest of your life, but I sure hope you have the good sense to NEVER take your children over there!
You only read what you want to..

JAAMT or Plexus or other???     It was an article about AAMT's position in dropping the possesive form of an eponym and how other organizations were following suit (like AMA). In other words, not to type Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, but Alzheimer disease and Parkinson disease. I meant to copy this to have it readily available (doctors don't seem to have read this explanation yet). Thanks!

The poster was saying "Hey, better to have an occasional drink than to wind up on antidepressants" - which, even when taken EXACTLY as prescribed, can really mess some people up.
I have never taken a job from there, but I just want to read it to keep -
ahead of what is out there and who is looking for what as far as jobs. What I did notice though, and I absolutely love that they did this, is that you cannot see what anyone else has bid. you used to see what everyone was bidding and it got to a point where people were putting down that they would do it for free just for the job and experience!! C'mon. How fair is that.

I agree with you on paying - I don't want to pay Guru a part of my check, that I am already under bidding on, just because the job was posted there.

That may be true, but again, please don't let a bad reputation of one company put you in a negative mindset of the entire Network Marketing Industry.  It's the same with medical transcription.  If you look at these boards, you'll find that there are some companies with very bad reputations, and yet there are some very good ones out there.

I've been in this industry for several years.....and I never said that ANYONE should take my advice, I was simply giving my opinion and having a conversation.  If Network Marketing is not your cup of tea, then that's cool.  But I along with several other people I am associated with do make a nice living at it.  Please understand, I am NOT defending those companies that truly are scams or the ones that make you spend lots of money before you even see a dime.  I was just saying that not all companies are bad.....and that personal development is a good thing to do for yourself.....nothing more and nothing less.  Have a blessed week!!

What I have read..

From a government site, said that with the growing population and the expansion of new hospitals and medical facilities, the need for the medical Transcriptionist will increase.  There are many people on here who will say, don't do it, and we hate our jobs, but I don't think there are many jobs where you can sit at home and do your work.  You save on gas, clothing, food, day care, etc.  In my opinion, it will be here for a while.  Even if there are voice recognition programs, there will be someone who will have to edit those files because of grammar, ESL doctors, and just doctors who cannot speak.

There is also a concern for outsourcing out of the U.S.  I do not think that is a problem.  I know a few doctors who went with an India service and came back pretty quick.  I doubt the need for the MT will reduce in the future. This is my opinion from what I have read.

You need to read this...................

Please be aware that if you are working in the evenings doing MT, and another agent calls you and says he/she has a contract on your listing, you WILL have to drop what you're doing MT wise and go; to not do so would mean you could (most probably) miss out on a sale, which you certainly don't want to do after having put all your heart, soul, and $$$ on the line.

Also know there are time constraints involved in all contracts, and they will not go according to YOUR schedule.

Please be aware that if a seller calls you and says he/she wants you to list their home -  please come over at 7:30 p.m. - you WILL have to drop what you're doing MT wise and go; to not do so would be to risk the seller listing their home with another agent.  In addition, you'll also have to spend time preparing for the listing meeting before you arrive there.

Also be aware that the majority of home buyers work during the day, so the busiest time of day to go out looking at homes with buyers is naturally when they are not working; i.e., evenings and weekends.  If you are summoned to take buyers out looking at homes at that time, you WILL have to drop what you're doing MT wise and go; otherwise, there are thousands of other agents out there who are more than willing to drop what they're doing to show homes and make a possible sale.

You will find that Buyers do NOT wait.  Real estate agents are considered a dime a dozen as there are so many of them out there who are willing to show homes at 2:00 a.m. if need be.  Buyers want to see homes when they want to see homes.

I'm not trying to be snitty here, but I think you have an unrealistic view of making money in real estate.  If you think you can work real estate during the day and that's it, you are going to be sadly surprised.

There's a lot of homework that goes into real estate and a lot of time involved in all aspects of real estate that go with it.

If you are planning on making any money in this whatsoever, daytime hours only won't cut it, and you will soon find that all you're doing is spending a lot of money, spinning your wheels, getting frustrated, and going absolutely no where.

Trust me when I tell you to be successful in real estate, you must give blood; this includes in the form of your energy, time spent, knowledge, competiting with other agents who would slit their own mother's throat to make a sale, and a multitude of other things that I don't have time - or the room here - to tell you.

Tread carefully into your new venture and realize there's no job out there that's easy, and least of all real estate. It's one of the hardest fields, but I know most folks think's its so simple - sorta like the little gal with a typewriter/computer who watches ER and, therefore, thinks she can be successful in starting a medical transcription business or SC'g for a service.

Please read.
I say this because I care about each and every one of the "good guys" out there, so please try to read this with an open mind and accept that this is what I believe to be true.

We aren't living in Little House on the Prarie anymore. We are living in times where all of us are at risk from those who wish us harm. If that means that we give up a few of our "rights," well, so be it. Blame the bad guys, not the government.

The prarie folk probably felt the same way some do now when the goverment began to intervene with taxes, telling them where to bury their dead, and putting them in jail for murder, while at the same time providing health care, food, and housing, when needed. Big Bad Government, right?

As parents, it is our job to keep our children from harming themselves and others, teaching them right from wrong, correct? Ponder the measures you'd have to take if you had millions of children, and you needed to try to maintain world peace at the same time. It's a no-win situation, isn't it? But you'd have to try. It's your job as a parent. Just like with kids, someone's not going to be happy about the rules.

It's not about us, any of us, unless, of course, someone is planning to bomb a building, or are sending pictures of their neighbor's naked child out on the internet, or are planning to put sarin in the neighbor kid's backpack for Show and Tell at school. Oh, yes! I can hear those people screaming "No, no George W! Keep out! It's wrong...and...and...and, I have RIGHTS!"

However, I can also hear people screaming at George W "WHY DIDN'T YOU DO SOMETHING?!" when the next tall building falls with their loved one on the 121st floor. It's not about us, any of us...until it truly IS about us and how much we hurt. Then no is at fault but the government, Big Brother, right? How many people would say "I wish I would have listened, and trusted them to do their job."

Me? I say "Welcome, take a look around, and would you like a cup of tea while you are here? How can I help?"

I have friends who work in the Pentagon and with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the information they elude to (never direct facts, big no-no) tells me that we DO need to be watched, and measures MUST be taken NOW to try to outfox the foxes. After all, the foxes look and smell just like us. There's so much most of us don't know. Some people do know, and some know enough to help them understand the ugly truth--it's not Disneyland out there any more, folks. When my friends call me and say "don't go there," I listen without question. Why? Becuase they know things I don't, and they care about me.

It's a black world out there and it's getting blacker by the day. Each of us has to at least try to trust the guys who are on our side and let them try to do their job.

Being able to accept that the government might have to take these steps to protect us means that I don't have to worry about my "rights," because I know I'm living up to the responsibilties that go along with it. And I don't have anything to hide.

Hopefully our grandchildren will have a better, safer world in which to raise their children. But the first steps toward that need to be taken today.

My dear, when/if the time comes we stop to care about our fellow man, the whole world will go straight down the loo.  Pretty much the direction it's going now because no one seems to care.  It's all based on the almighty dollar.  To that I say "God help us all!" and to your noncaring, flippant attitude, I say, "God help you and grant you some grace and serenity."
I read somewhere that,

that means you were in a state of total concentration.  Just like when you are driving and you don't remember stopping at that stop sign two blocks back.  I'm 31 and I'd rather believe that I was in deep concentration than to think I'm losing it already.  How 'bout you?  LOL Roll
