I am an IC and I make my own schedule. My situation sounds similar to yours. I am always working around my husband's schedule, not to mention having two little ones. The company I work for asked me what hours I would normally work. I told them 8-5 M-F. I have not worked that schedule yet. Although, I do jump on at night, weekends, whenever. I have never been asked to make up hours, or been repremanded for not working the hours I thought I could. The only thing I have to do is notify my supervisor if I will be taking more than say 4 or 5 days off. This company (Webmedx) is doing away with IC positions, and I had to really stick to my guns about being hired as an IC. Good luck!!
