Unless we are transcribing, we are losing money. This is why a relative decent line rate is not asking for a lot, I believe.
I do think we should all have a savings account though. I have 17 hours of PTO that I am going to cash in.

an expander, the answer is no, you don't really have to - but you'll work a lot better if you do. It's worth $99 (for example) and it pays for itself.
Autocorrect fills up and wreaks all kinds of havoc when it does. Autotext doesn't fill up (that I know of).
Yes, you need an expander. They're capable of much more than just stretching an abbreviation into a phrase.

I was offered the perfect job (for me), but I just realized that gearplayer is required to do the files. I'm broke as it is........didn't want to spend money I didn't have to just to "work"........sucks, because now I have to turn the job down and I really needed it.
True, most do, but why spend money buying
one when you don't know if it will work. You can test without a pedal and then some companies will provide one. Every company I have worked for had a proprietary software/foot pedal.
You will spend a lot of money on acute care books because there are many that you need sm
since acute care covers ALL specialties in a hospital setting: Neurology, cardiology, nephrology, psychiatry, gastro, urology, ENT, infectious disease, orthopedic, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, laboratory medicine, some pathology depending on where you work, OB/Gyn, pulmonology, and maybe some others I am forgetting.
Stedman's has a full line of reference books for EACH specialty and each book can cost between 38.00-42.00 or more.
To be honest, I have all of them, but don't use them very much since Google and search engine websites offer more up to date answers than any Stedman's who can't compete with the internet. Good luck! Acute care is fun!

required for this book. their *rules* will just change in six months anyway and they are only *guidelines* not *rules*. Alot of services do not adhere with the BOS anyway, but go with client preference. If you are in school, you should be communicating with your mentor concerning this. Every school/service is different. There is no *one way* that is correct. JMO
KVM switch for computer
Anyone use a KVM switch to keep their own monitor and keyboard, yet switch between 2 computer towers? Also, can the second computer tower be easily connected to the internet..?

Updating
Perhaps I am on the wrong board, but I need to update my equipment (have Windows 98 with Office 97) and need to start working from home. I need to order a new tower, of course, and new software. I don't have the money to spend, so I would like to know what I should ask for to work in order to qualify for home, i.e., the minimum amount of memory; what I need to attach a foot pedal, etc., etc. Some of the e-mail "bargains" I am getting offers for this time of year will have in the small print "no USB or parallel ports." I am totally confused and would appreciate any help I can get. I am getting off a DOS-based WP 5.1 program after many, many years. There is a computer store nearby and he builds computers to your needs, but he is very, very business-like and a "no-nonsense" person (Japanese, hard-working). You have to tell him exactly what you want. He has absolutely no clue about medical transcription needs. Have plenty of acute care experience but need your help so I won't "waste" my money on useless "bargains" and need to start testing on line for the new year. Right now, I have AOL dial-up as well. So you see, I do need your expertise and in the Christmas spirit, if you would e-mail me, I sure would appreciate it. I need to get back to doing what I love to do after a year's relocation. I did receive some good advice and some thoughtful e-mails with regard to updating. I want to emphasize what a wonderful board this is and a credit to our profession. I want to thank the administrator(s) and all those who respond positively and offer their expertise and are always willing to help their fellow MLS people. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season. I celebrate Christmas myself and have found the joy of the gracious hearts of many people on this board are my Christmas present(s). Problems Updating in MT World
I also use MT World for my job. I had the very same problem. I upgraded from Microsoft Office 2002 to Microsoft Office 2003. I also had a "corrupt" auto-correct file.

Updating word expander
I have lost my instructions for updating word expander. Does anyone have these instructions or can tell me where I can find it or the file in my computer? Any help would be appreciated.

Wireless here, too. DBF has 2 puters in his office with the router to the main, NIC card in the other, ditto on the NIC card with my stuff in my office. He sure is handy to have around...my own personal "tech support." 
No, I know not every facility/provider is
compliant, but two wrongs don't make a right. I want to keep my nose clean if the facility/provider is ever charged and investigated for a HIPAA violation - if the gov't has done so thus far. You think the gov't will buy 'oh, I was non-compliant because my client signed my checks'?...nope!
Who's the satellite provider?
Did they have a large dish like a TV satellite dish or just a little thing? If they use that little receiver there's a thing called a YAGI that they can use with it to get through the trees. The larger dish should not have a problem with trees because it does not have to see the tower.
Its your internet provider that determines when
you may or may not be logged out. AOL, for instance, has settings to bop you off line frequently, especially if they perceive inactivity (writing long emails, reading web sites). Generally, its the dial-up providers that do this, while cable connection provides an uninterrupted (usually Ha!) connection. You can call your internet service provider to discuss lengthening the time they allow til they disconnect you...some will happily change settings, others pretend they don't know what you're talking about! If you let me know your provider, I might be familiar with their timing policies...

What does third party transcription provider mean?
Ask the provider for an itemized statement of all
transactions since you started treatment. Then audit it and figure out where they made their mistake. Then call or visit their business/billing office and CALMLY discuss your findings. If they agree that you do not owe more, ask for a statement showing the adjustment and a zero balance. Then write a letter documenting the conversation.

Provider search sites?
I had a terrific, very user-friendly provider search that I had found on this board several months ago. Now my computer crashed and had to be replaced and I cannot find it anywhere. Could someone throw me a few site names? Thanks!

TASP - Stands for "Transcription Application Service Provider". They aren't the MTSO, but providing Voice and Text solutions/platforms to MTSOs to utilize.
P.S. USATasp is the subsidiary of MTStars :)

It was a privately held company where they depended on referrals from MDs to keep them in business, in today's work environment the normal TAT is 4 to 8 hours. USUALLY there is someone responsible for matching up each days order slips and the reports and goes to medical records if there is any report missing.
I'm sorry but I think disciplinary action is in order for both parties. This really impacts patient care (can you imagine worrying about your mammogram for a month to find out whether that lump your doctor found is cancer??) Where any of these reports for next-day preoperative evaluations? Geesh, imagine your surgery being cancelled because of what she did.
When I worked at an outpatient diagnostic center, the MR supervisor could not leave at night until all slips were matched to either films on the rad's desk to be the first ones done the next morning or all reports were in the couriers bin for delivery or had been faxed to the appropriate office.
If she does not have the time to send out reports and the supervisor does not have the time to manage the work flow, it seems to me they are both pretty worthless.

IOW the smart computer folks who deal with the headaches! :)
They provide HIPAA complaint file hosting/ftp set up for MTs. Some charge per line, other charge per month, it just varies. Some provide a call in dictation service and charge per minute. It's great if you have no capital in invest in equipment. :)
I'm not sure but I think it's what some MTs refer to as a platform?
I had VoIP back in Nov with my cable provider and then went with another IP and just used..sm
my landline because they did not offer VoIP. Now my IP offers it and it works great other than the pedal. Thanks for your help!

I get my work over the internet and am just wondering how they are with their services. If you lose your internet, how long does it usually take to get it back up? Do you find them helpful if you have to call? Do they return phone calls promptly? Do they come in and set it up, or do you have to? I'd appreciate any info and feedback about their services. Thanks!

you know into signing up. I felt like a snake oil huckster. I hated it. I was flushing money down the toilet from the moment I handed over my money.
RUN, do not walk away! I do an entirely different side business now that I really love (in addition to my MTing, which I also love!) Find something you're good at and that you truly love doing. Then make a business out of it. That's the best way to have a side business. Selling discount toilet paper through Amway/Quixtar? Not so much.
The CMT exam is overrated. Don't waste your time & money. Use that money on
paid anymore just because you have it. There are a few CMT cheerleaders that post to people like you but they are pretty well sucked up into that association.

You are a sole proprietor and can use your SSN as your TIN. You home office expenses as well as percentages of your utilities, vehicle, etc., are tax-deductible. You don't specify what your "other" interests, though.
