Docs are not docs are not docs - they have different voices, different ways of saying things. I have done both editing and regular MT work in my 25 years, and editing is simpler in that editing has the benefit of knowing what the voice is actually saying because someone else has waded through that part of things. The different voices and the fact that some programs don't allow you to print out the profiles for the clients makes it very hard to do them.
I work for a company that guarantees 80% on your primary because they know that they make money when we make money. I like that way of thinking. Smaller companies are much nicer and much more work to go around to those hired, too - and we do just as good in the turn around with a lot more quality than the big guys. I feel like I am a part of a group delivering quality reports and not out there by myself like I was with the big guys.
Also, the smaller companies are less apt to be farming out our work to India.
