Today is different and you cannot fight companies who LEGALLY can offshore work.
So all Americans refuse to buy goods, shop at stores, or work for companies who offshore. That leaves a mess. Do you realize a lot of American companies are actually owned by foreigners? Get real and move into 2005. You are going to spend a lot of time boycotting once you do the research. I doubt you will be able to shop or work at all.

I fired my ISP today because of non-US technical support....
To give a brief summary, I developed technical problems after my ISP decided to do some upgrades 2 weeks ago. The problems resulted in my getting kicked off line every few minutes. Upon contacting technical support I found myself consistently running into people that had no English comprehension skills and their responses had nothing to do with my problem or how to fix it. I found another ISP that would provide the services I needed and signed up with them 3 days ago, then called my main one today and told them they were fired because of their non-US based labor who couldn't help anyone. The lady I spoke with apologized and said this was an experiment they were doing with outsourcing technical support, but I told her that their experiment cost them a customer who had been with them for almost 4 years.
I've fired off e-mails to everyone in management that I could get ahold of telling them exactly why they were fired, and sharing the idiotic responses I received on my technical assistance requests.
I am not too smart with computer technical stuff, but you can use Vonage
with C-phone? I often thought about going that route but wasn't sure how it all worked with having to be on the computer and having to dial in to system to transcribe.
Just talked to offshore customer service
I just got off the phone to my CC company. The sales rep that answered had no accent but on a hunch I asked where she was located and after much hesitation, she replied she was in the Phillipines. I told her I wanted to speak to a rep. in the US. She put me on hold and a few seconds later returned, asking me why. I told her I was totally against offshoring. Once again I was put on hold and after a long wait, her supervisor got on the line. This was a male with no accent so to be sure I asked him where he was located and again, the answer was the Phillipines. I told him I wanted to speak to a US rep. He asked why and I told him I was against offshoring. He said it was not possible to tranfer me to a US rep. I explained that I had made this same requist before and had been transferred but he said it was not possible this time. I told him I will email the company and try to get a US phone number that way. I will let you all know what happens. I am so angry I could spit.
If we find out that a service outsources offshore, we do NOT allow them to post.

to transcribe, do you know how unhappy the M.D.'s would be. They are already complaining. There would be enough jobs if no one worked for the offshoring ones. Idealistic? Yes, but.............

we were told how much the outsource service
gets paid every month from our overflow work - they get paid $48,000/month!!! A MONTH!!!! In the beginning, some of us were so mad that were coming in early and grabbing all the easy work and typing it as fast as we could just so it wouldn't get picked up by the outsource service. With our staff of 14 transcriptionists, plus the outsourcing, is it any wonder these hospitals are getting sick of having inhouse transcriptionists!
You can thank offshoring and the companies who offshore for most of this. SM
Been in the business well over 20 years and I am working twice as hard for half as much. It started with offshoring and the big MTSOs who bolted the US like their pants were on fire. They used the excuse that were not enough US MTs. LIES. All LIES. They forced the smaller MTSOs to charge less. We got paid less. Many of the smaller MTSOs got gobbled up by the Squid (MQ). Now there are only one or two superpowers and they all offshore. Some of them lie about it, some are very open. This business is not even close to what it should be as far as making a living. 
So many companies offshore that there aren't
enough companies that don't to take on the displaced MTs. Standing up for what you believe in is a good thing, but when it comes to putting food on the table you do what you have to do and then you have those that just don't care, give them a paycheck and that is all that matters.
They also try to place you with companies that offshore.

I know of 2 companies, neither of whom offshore, that are slammed with
overflow from the MQ shutdown. I think clients are looking for anyone that works on platforms they use to pick up the slack.
If we boycott working for companies that offshore,
boycott medical providers that offshore, and write to our politicians, maybe we can change things. I won't go to any local doctor that uses an offshored transcription outsource. Hit 'em where it counts, right in their big fat wallets. They put us out of work and reduced our wages, so why do we owe them any loyalty? Why should we pay higher medical bills when they're too cheap to pay us what we're worth? Pretty soon, we'll all be on unemployment, foodstamps and Medicaid. One way or another, they'll have to cough up.
This is not a new market. Is being done with all offshore companies I have ever worked for. nm

I have an idea...we can picket those facilities who use companies that offshore. sm
Every patient going in and coming out of that hospital/facility will know their private medical record is going offshore to be transcribed and therefore, there is risk of identity theft, lack of privacy, etc Just like those for ProLife and the like.
I think that will bring attention to the matter!
I know a huge hospital system in my town outsources their TX to MQ, who is now CBay, and now everything will be offshore. I think I will make my point and concerns when I have picket signs outside the President's window in a public area, so as not to be trespassing.

I too used be a member and an officer in the local chapter. I too attended all the activities. I have since let my CMT lapse. Never once has being a CMT earned me a better job or more money, it's all about the experience and the quality of work you can produce, not whether or not you're a CMT!
I guess you forgot about India and all the other offshore companies they deal with, ASR and EMR.
That is the plan. They have hired all management lately that have been involved very heavily with overseas companies. Now why do you think that is. I dont think you see the whole plan here.

I got tired of the promises...Oh I have gals doing 10,500 lines every 2 weeks in 8 hours a day. (I think I choked when I heard this.)
It is NOTHING for me to type 8000 lines or BETTER in a week and I get paid way more for my 8000 lines. I have been looking for another job, either PT to augment the lack of work or FT for the right situation. First question I ask perspective employer? How do you feel about voice. I have talked to about 7 or 8 companies in the past 2 weeks. EVERY ONE OF THEM has said NO WAY, NOT HERE. It is not very good...you can't expect an MT to edit that crapola for half of what they make typing, unless you don't care the least about quality. I had two of them tell me it was unmitigated GREED on the part of these company's owners that they even entertain it.
I will say that the cream of the crop of MTs can transcribe so much faster than they edit, it isn't even funny. Granted, there are plenty of MTs who are stop start, stop start, but when I get into a report, I put the pedal to the floor and TYPE. I am down to about 1.25:1 or better than that a times. A 5-minute report will take me under 6 minutes, as a rule, to transcribe. My accuracy is something above 99.5%. I swear what attracts MTs to editing is the fact that they can't type enough lines to make it work as a career. Either they can't sit still (that is me most days, but my speed makes up for it), they don't know their stuff all that well, or type slower than a 7-year itch...but they are not the cream of the crop.
Just you all wait...one of these companies who has crappy speech program and crappy "editors" is going to be sued and those extremely substandard reports are going to win the case for the plantiff and the hospital is going to be left high and dry, a couple of doctors with them. We are here for a reason. We protect patients and patient care. We also protect the doctors from litigation. I used to go through medical records looking for errors, loop holes and other boo boos for a malpractice lawyer. The better the transcription, the more thorough the dictation, the less I could find proof against a doctor or facility.

My computer now has been really slow lately and checked and found to have 768 MB, told I need to increase to at least 1.5 or 2 gb which my computer can handle. My question is this, since it is gonna cost me approximately $140 or so, is this worth it, will I be able to tell the difference in the speed? Right now I am sitting waiting for some words to appear on the screen, very frustrating. Thanks!

He apparently has been working with a service that outsources to India and he is so fed up at the bad quality of the transcription in addition to the fact that he wants to work with someone who actually speaks English! How about that!! They will all learn the hard way, but they will learn. There may be hope for American MTs yet.

Said when I asked him to drop off boxes at the Goodwill for me last week that were in the TRUNK he thought the book on the front seat was also for them. You have to call them to get a new install code,but first they have to fax you a request sheet to be completed and faxed back,then they have to okay the reinstall and give you a new code. They are NOT available after hours or on weekends, so if you have an emergency such a computer crash,you are out of luck.

I receive the files and send them via internet through their computer. Is this the same thing? Sorry, I know how to transcribe but am computer illiterate (?sp).....thanks...

We have decided to add this to our current service not have a new service. It will be easier to sm
keep track of and will just be a different department.
It looks like we will work out details over the next 6 months, talking with community college program directors as well as a few of the distance-learning course leaders to work on the recruiting end.
We will train current staff to mentor if they would like to do so and want to work in the office.
We are still working on production requirements, goals to set, pay, benefits and other fine details but we have 6 months to get it all in place with three months to pull it together after that with a tentative start date of 09/01/06. We need to build the building as well, although that is already at the blueprint stage in a spot next to our current office.
We did not want to cause flames and bashing by listing the company name as there are always so many negative people on this site, but we are national with over 200 transcriptionists, located outside of Chicago (40 miles west) and have the best team of transcriptionists around!
We will have an "official" announcement after the first of the new year.
