I vote for Quick Look Drug Books

Very, very helpful.  Also Stedman's word books quite quite handy.  Googling comes a long way, but I tend to like the books better.  Dorland's medical dictionary is a must have and also electronic spell checkers are great/CDs loaded on PC.

drug books
Okay, I am sure this question has been asked before but here I go.  I am on the search for a new drug book.  I have narrowed it down to 3......Quick Look, Saunders and Lipinicott Nursing drug book.  Which drug book and/or books or references do everyone prefer?  I ask this because I recently purchased an Expander that is very similar to ShortHand and was twice the money!!!!  I do no want to make the same mistake again.  Thanks.
drug books
I like all three ie Quick Look, Saundrs, and American Drug Index, each has some advantages over both others, so... I update each every 3 years, rotating them.  That way I stay up to date and keep all their advantages.    Quick Look is anything but quick, but I really use their indications index.
drug books
I just ordered the newest electronic version of Quick Look from Stedman's a few months ago and am disappointed with it, especially for what I paid. I end up using Google all the time which is better anyway because the new version is not that good in my opinion and I can't find the drugs. The latest version is not what it is cracked up to be. My old version of Quick Look 2003 was better (which was provided by a company I used to work for), but my hard drive crashed so I bought the new version of Quick Look. Don't waste your money on it. Google has never let me down on research.
Drug books

Quick Look is good if you are not sure of the medication name because you can look it up by disease or condition plus it has lots of extras such as lab values, chemotherapy regimens, etc. The drawback is everything is listed by generic and if you are looking for detailed information (dosages, etc.) and only have the brand name, you are referred to another page for the generic that has the details, wasting typing time. This is why I use Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book most of the time. Saunders is great for a quick look-up, not having to jump around pages between generic and brand names. I use both and try to get the lastest copies every couple of years, they are the two best in my opinon and I cannot live without them.

There is also a great website, http://www.edruginfo.com/dudrughome.htm, with new drugs that may not be in the books yet.

Old Drug books
Most MTs use the internet to keep updated on the latest pharmaceuticals. There are a gazillion sites out there that offer a lot more information that Quick Look drug books. They are relics of the past. Although you might find someone who wants one if you are lucky.
Quick Books/Quicken

Also tracks alll my items for tax purposes.   Been using it for almost 20 years.

Quick Look Drug Book

The company I recently began working for asked me to purchase the Quick Look Drug Book as a reference tool, as they use it.  So, I got one...bought it used online so it wasn't that expensive, and I was needing a new drug reference book anyway.

I am just not impressed with this book.  While it does have very useful information in it, I find it is not laid out in the most convenient manner.  The drugs are listed alphabetically by the generic name.  So, what if the doc says the brand name of a drug?  How am I to use this book to look up the spelling, etc. of a brand name drug if I don't know the generic name of the drug so I can find it???  I have hardly used this book at all since I got it....I still go online to look up meds.  I feel like I wasted my money.

Maybe I'm just missing something here.  If anyone has any insight please let me know.  Or if any of you have a better suggestion for a drug guide that is laid out in a better format for MTs, I am open to suggestions.

TIA!!

? re Quick Look Electronic Drug Ref

I'm trying to do a wildcard search for the endings of drug names, eg, *sartan. I read the help file and tried ~, (), ?, and nothing is working. I read the FAQ on the Stedman's web site and it appears to skirt the question and refer the questioner to the help file.

Am I correct that the new 2006 QLEDR does not allow searches for just the endings of drugs? If so, what a waste of money that was.

Quick Look Drug Book CD
Can anyone tell me if they use the Quick Look Drug Book and CD?  I am thinking about purchasing the 2006 set for about $80, the 2007 is not available yet
quick look drug book

Hello-

Could you give me some advice on drug reference books? Do you recommend people wait for the quick look drug book '08?  Or is there a site online to search for drug information?

I'm new here, and am still studying to be a MT, so I'd like a recommendation from someone who knows  :)

I hope I'm not asking a question already asked 100 times...

Thanks!
Sharon

Quick Look Drug Book
I would highly recommend Quick Look Drug Book. It is the cheapest book I have found, and it is is the only one I have seen that lists the drugs in both alphabetical order as well as by indication/treatment. In my opinion, it is the drug book with the best format.
I got a copy of Quick Look Elec Drug Ref...
of my very own...not too shabby I don't guess!
Quick Look Drug Book 2007 (sm)
CD version.  Does anyone have this and like it?  I have the 2005 version, and could not see much difference in the 2006 QLDB.  Any comments appreciated.
Anybody Use Quick Look Drug Book 2007?

Do you like it? I just received mine yesterday. It does not put a link on the Word  toolbar like the old one did. I called support and they downloaded a file for me to load and now it's on the toolbar, but now I get the message "QLDB.exe" not found.

I have uninstalled (like tech support said) and re-installed but still get the same message.

I checked the CD and it does not seem to have this file on it. Does anyone else have this problem? My task bar is already full so I really need it on the Word toolbar. Thanks

Nonsense! Drug books are dead (sm)

The net is ///far/// more useful than outdated books or electronic word products, for MTs with any kind of experience, that is. @_@  If you're a student or new, you do need a good drug book.  Drake & Drake is the best; there will be an electronic version next year.

Try the link below for Drugs @ FDA.  That's one of the essential links on my IE toolbar.  (I know; every time you use IE, god kills a kitten, but w/some work platforms, I have to use it.)  You can search generic/brand names using ^*^any 3 consecutive characters^*^ in the name.  Try doing that with Quick Look, which only lets you wildcard the beginning OR the end of the word or individual characters.  Nothing's more up to date than the FDA!

Using AutoHotKey or Active Words plus the newest download of Google Toolbar (google pones!), you can set up a quick little app to automatically highlight the last word you typed and send a search without leaving your document.

MT references were essential in the "old days" [meaning pre-2000?] when one had to really know how to use a search engine to find med equipment or drugs.  Now every equip and drug mfgr has a website.  Most of the new drugs have their own websites.  Google's awesome ability to figure out what one wants from a phonetic spelling has officially killed the MT word reference publishing industry.

Agree with this but disagree about Drug Books, sm
Would recommend the Quick Look Drug Book, but I only buy every other year. The FDA site is good but I like being able to cross-reference generic and brand names and get the dosage information.
And get 2 new drug books every year when updated in Jan/Feb. nm

Quick Look Drug Book (book & CD/ROM)..sm..

Does anyone use both.  I'm definitely getting the CD/ROM and am debating about buying both.  I don't see any reason to have both but there could be something I don't know.

I noticed CD/ROMs are on backorder but they're selling downloadable versions.  I can handle that.

FYI I HAVE reference books, but in case you hadn't noticed, thing change a lot faster than BOOKS
I was simply asking for suggestions of other places on line that I might look for the latest info, especially considering that my work is on the internet, what the hell is wrong with trying to be more productive and efficient?!?! Good Grief!!
I prefer books. I'm kinda old school. I like to be able to write new terms in my books. I do

have Stedman's Medical Dictationary on CD and I do use it quite a bit, but that's more because the actual print dictionary is so darn heavy to pick up and look a word up!

Good drug book vs. internet drug sites
I need to buy a new drug book.  At a prior job, about a year ago, one of the supervisors told me she used the internet exclusively.  What's the consensus and if you prefer the internet, which site or sites do you like.  Thanks in advance.

We have a show on Sunday nights here, a call-in show that deals with all sorts of issues.  A while back there was a huge ruckus when the Oreck plant relocated to Tennessee, they said they "couldn't find qualified workers" after Katrina.  Before I moved here I guess there was a jeans plant of some sort, Levis or whatever, and it went to Mexico.  So I e-mailed the host of the show and told him he should consider doing a show on outsourcing and detailed my experience at having been outsourced, and the whole health care info going to India thing, and I did not hear back from him!  I was shocked because I interpret no response as not giving a rat's behind about where his info goes.  Maybe he didn't want to "get involved" because the hospital that ditched us is a big advertiser on the station, I don't know, but I sure thought something positive would happen, the topic would come out in the open, but as of this point it doesn't look like it will.  We all need to keep knocking on doors and rattling windows, though, or we'll be sunk.  My opinion and I'm sticking with it.

If this is something that appeals to you, I say go for it; however, I don't think MAs are compensated as well as they should be for their knowledge (sound familiar?).

I became an LVN in 3 semesters and an RN with an AS degree in 4. I'm job hunting for a nursing position now with not much success, even in the midst of this critical nursing shortage, so I can only imagine that the immediate outlook for medical assistants is not that bright.

Saying all this, the MAs I've worked with have been awesome, brilliant people who loved what they were doing and were HAPPY.

I think you should follow your heart.

Another vote for Amphion--
so far, quite good. I've had the same account since I started. Nice equipment, good tech support (which I've only needed once), and calm staff who leave you alone to work during the day. They're definitely worth considering.

to pass the Safe ID act which was presented to congress by  Senator Markey.  This particular bill would require anyone sending things like medical or banking records out of the US to obtain consent from the consumer/patient ahead of time as well as yearly afterwards.  Educate all of your friends, neighbors and family that  HIPAA does not cover  your medical records leaving the US and therefore when they receive medical services they should request in writing that their medical records remain exclusively in the US.
2nd vote here for Goldtouch.
