I use TracFone....sm

and it costs me about $20 every 2 months.  I buy the lowest amount of air time that I can at a time and have 200 minutes built up.  If your don't need a fancy-schmancy phone with all the bells and whistles, then this is not a bad way to go.  Of course, they do have newer and fancier phones than I have, but I am cheap!

Tracfone
I LOVE my Tracfone. I have had mine for 3 years at least. I buy my minutes on-line most of the time. I buy 120 minute cards and that usually lasts me about 1 1/2 months. If I can't afford minutes at any time, I just don't use it. It is small enough that I can stick it in my pocket, but big enough that I can find it in my purse. I leave mine plugged in at work to charge it. I ride public transportation back and forth to work and and it comes in handy for that. I just wish that I had walkie talkie on it. :) I hve never had any problems with my Tracfone either. If you get one and just use it for emergencies, it will be worth the money you spent.

I love mine too.  I usually buy the one-year service card with double minutes.  That way when I need to add minutes, if I buy a 60 minute card it gives me 120!  It is a little expensive on the front end of renewing the one-year service, I think I gave around $130 for my card at Wal-Mart, but all in all throughout the rest of the year I feel like I make up for it with the double minutes.  I went on-line to check on the phones.  I like to make sure I'm getting a new phone and not a refurbished one; it makes note of that there.  I just replaced my original phone a few months ago (it was 3 or 4 years old and needed to be updated).  I just called their customer service and my left over service time and minutes were carried over into my new phone.  I don't use mine all the time, but I do probably use it some almost every day.  The first year I had it I fgured up that it cost me around $7 average to have a cell phone - beats $60 a month!

anyone tried the refurbished Tracfone?
x
ditto everyone else on Tracfone
it averaged 8$ a month the first year I had it and that includes service and minutes - would NEVER go back to one of the others.
i have a tracfone and for any problems
i've called their help number and gotten the help i needed.  I haven't had any problems with mine, like you describe.  I've looked around a lot and still think this is the best way to go for those of us who basically just want it for emergencies and/or occasional convenience; plus the fact that these phones feed off of virtually all towers instead of one company.
tracfone minutes
With Tracfone, if you have no minutes, you just don't use your phone. You don't have to buy a "minimum" number of minutes. You keep your same phone number. Just make sure you get more minutes on your phone by the date that shows on your phone. There have been times when I have run out of minutes and I just put the phone on the charger for the duration of being "minuteless." I also think that even if you hvae no minutes on your Tracfone, you can still make a 911 call. Check their website tho, to make sure. To activate your service, you can call or do it online. You need the number from the battery on your phone and it has to be fully charged. That is pretty much it.
Tracfone cell phone
This is a place where I value your opinions, so here goes on a non-MT question:  I recently bought a Tracfone because I truly only need a cell phone for emergencies and thought prepaid was the way to go.  After the first time I reloaded minutes, I got "No service" message; then 1-1/2 hours later with customer service, I was informed they would send a new SIM card.  I installed the new SIM card and still no service.  Next I tried calling customer service back and found out they are down for maintenance.  Ditto for website. Anyone else had a similar experience?  Which prepaid should I go with next time if this is not resolved?  BTW, I am thinking of forming a militant branch of SHHH--the society for hand-held hushing!!
Yes, I use a prepaid Tracfone from Nokia- works well for me since I only use it for urgent stuff -nm
