will a method that requires me to give away free work. I will politely explain my position when we have our meeting. If push comes to shove, I will tell her that I will switch to her method of line counting, but I will need 9 cpl rather than 8 cpl. If she won't do it, I will give my notice.

But don't you also lose money when...
you are paid by the line, and you are sitting there waiting for Mr. hem & haw to start talking again? When you are paid by the dictation minute, you are paid for the length of the sound file, whether the ditator is talking or turning pages or hemming & hawing. I had a few times when I had a 20-minute sound file, which I was paid for, even though there was only 5 minutes of dictation on it!
Also, you know EXACTLY how much money you will make on the report before you even start typing it, regardless of what type of dictator it is.
Stedman's isn't free, but they can bill you for installment payments

Just return the work, submit your bill, the scurry and find more work elsewhere. sm
They will never meet with you before next week. It is Thursday, already. Be prepared to sue for payment, because you will probably need to. But, most of all, find other work elsewhere, because I have a feeling this final payment will be a long time coming.

Ok everyone, does anyone remember a couple years back when Bush or whoever did this: sent out checks to taxpaying families for like $400 or so. Well has anyone heard anything about this happening again? I heard something about it on the radio but I caught the end of it. My mother said yes she had heard it. She said she heard it was for taxpayers. Which means pretty much everyone. She said it was about $800 this time for a single and more for a family. Sounds too good to be true. But I remember them doing this before. Anybody know any details on this?

You can set up IT to work like SH, but then you lose some of the features. (sm)
I switched from SH to IT, wasn't sure I liked it at first, and there's still a few things I don't like, but I'm sticking with IT.
Choosing from a list isn't as bad as it sounds, because you can use the same abbreviation for more than one thing, which is nice. It also has a "finish it for me" feature where you start to type something and it will suggest the rest of the sentence or whatever, and just hitting a key will type it in for you!

I love those long reports. I think of them as free money.
It's just straight transcribing with no stopping to verify patient or physician information to start a new note. I'll trade you for 1 minute long dictations by a little Russian guy?
I do understand the frustration at the duplication of information. Then again, the copy/paste feature works great at giving more lines for free with no typing. LOL I always thought that if I could find a way to simplify the medical record while still utilizing MTs, I'd be rich.

This has only happened once, and I had my check cut same day. This is business and I will not beg someone to give me my money. I simply stated it as a fact.

I wish I could. That is why this business is as bad as it is. We can't afford to not work, so we settle for whatever gets thrown at us.
You're likely to make more money on the lower rate because easier to understand and can probably
faster and need less time to look things up, etc. Just my 2 cents.

notorious intermittent medical waste dumping (john lloyd state park and north into ft. lauderdale beach) then so be it - it's her choice....*LOL*....and not all MTs stay home, with shades drawn - just ask several of us who live right on or a hop-skip-jump from the beach (golden beach, sunny isles, aventura).....
she's just another nasty Florida witch (to do that nasty rubbing) and again not all of us are this kind of rude (some of us were born elsewhere *lol*) so CONSIDER THE SOURCE!!!!

they think it is better than the country they are coming from so they should want to make the changes necessary to live here - mostly learn the language. Why come here if they are not going to make an effort to enjoy what our country has to offer.

to type the words and/or phrases she breathes in while speaking as well. So something like, 'continue on the same regimen' - spoken on an inhale, should be typed: ' nemiger emas eht no eunitnoc'.

the doctors will tell me, "send a copy to her gynecologist", or "send a copy to whoever the surgeon that an appointment was set up with".... well, heck, I don't have any of that information. I don't even have a chart, and I'm supposed to "find it"..so I do understand what you mean..I also work for a national at night (at home) and have had the doctors spell the name John Smith, but not some long foreign name that they can't even pronounce! I guess they ALL do that. Their time is more valuable than ours, is their thinking.

I have been IC for several years, and thought I might go back to employee for benefits. But I found the insurance was so high, and the pay was not as good, so I work both part time now. The bottom line is, I can't give up the freedom I've had in the last several years. I am given so much work in the morning, and have all day to finish it, and I love this system. I tried to set a schedule for my part-time employee job, thinking I would like to go to full time if it worked out. But I had too much trouble making myself fit a schedule (they have offered to let me work when I can, so I'm still keeping the job, but if I can't do it right, I will quit). Unfortunately, when you get used to IC, it is hard to fit back in a "box." Maybe you could look for a company that would allow you some flexibility in your schedule, say an 8-hour window to work 6 hours. If you have the experience, some companies will work with you that way. I don't think IC is a dead end, it is just a little harder to manage. But the benefits did not pan out. I can get the insurance cheaper individually, the pay was lower so I could actually put a little back as an IC every pay period and take time off "paid." The only thing I miss is what they pay for taxes (I think 7% or so), and having someone else do these things for me. If you like IC as I do, try setting up your own retirement plan, getting your own insurance, and put a little back each pay period for some time off. Good luck with your decision.

If I made $50K a month from 5 companies and you only make but $500 from 1 company -- that's my reward for being resourceful, for working hard, for doing the work that is offered when it is offered.
Nice thing about this country is you are free -- free to be as rich as you want to be or as poor as you want to be!! I love it!!
A way to get work done for free
I actually had 1 company ask me what my specialties were and then send me a file dictated the same day in one of my specialties with a note telling me to transcribe it as quickly as possible. That one really made me think she just wanted work done for free.

I recently applied for a job and they hired me after reviewing my resume and a short telephone interview. No tests. I was QA for about a week and a half, which I guess is their testing period, but I got paid for it. Can't beat that.
Work for Free
I'm telling you, DON'T WORK FOR TOTH. They will s c a m you out of $130 or more before you even start to work, as they charge you this ridiculous fee just to set up your computer. Believe me, there aren't too many companies out there, at least in the 11 years that I have been doing this, that charge you to set up your computer, and if they do, it's usually only $30 to $50.
Don't stoop to their level. They have no regard for their MTs, and they live beyond their means in a big house, with a mortgage that is about 5 times the average mortgage, and their car payments are about 3 times the average car payment. I know them personally, and they're not good people.
Wait until after the holidays. This time of year it slows down, as doctors take vacation, etc. It is usually slow this time of year. Things break usually in February.
Offer to do the work for free. You have not done something that has not been done before.

If there's some kind of contract that says she can't work anywhere else, then that might be a problem. Otherwise I just can't see anything legally wrong with it unless it can be proved she's sharing private information. I agree - I'd stay out of it completely.

Sit down and analyze the situation and you'll figure it out. I know where you're coming from and I've done that.
I think the amount of work sent to QA is is very bad idea to limit that. I can understand QA reviews
but to limit the amount of work to QA to get a bonus which is my understanding will cause people to not send things to QA when the dicator makes an obvious error and you dont want to chance correcting it. There are extremely bad dictators and depending on where they are dictating the noise can be horrendous on the phone lines or cells or whatever they are doing. My goodness, you have an attitude.
I don't understand; how does "speaking reports" work? Isn't that called dictating?

it is bigger equipment and expensive. AND they never worked so I did not owe them any money. Some were so "anxious" to work that I spent a small fortune sending it overnight so they could "get started" because they really needed to work. I want to believe in the best of people, but it is getting harder and harder.

Depending on who you work for.... you can make good money
I usually average between $15-25 an hour doing VR. That is enough for me. I think it helps if you have companies that pay for footers, headers, spaces etc.. Good luck.

Abacus is not free. It is $20 but worth it. You can download a trial version free which does not h
I have used this for years and have compared to Sylvan, Word, and MP Count, etc. When you have it set to count every character, bold, shift, tab, etc. It is great and always higher than the others. Now if you are wanting gross lines like in Word then no it won't be as high because Word counts blanks lines and Abacus counts a line only if there is a character on it. There is also two places to check for it to count the Headers/Footers. If you have the FREE version then it must be the trial or a very old version so you don't have all the features and functions.
