The company may not want to be announced on here. I just was curious which companies are the good ones. I have heard nothing but good about Keystrokes. I am assuming they are a good one.

It always bothers me to hear these stories but I think it bothered me even more because no one had a clue this guy had this in him. So it makes one wonder just WHO can we trust :-(

I loathe ESLs. They make our jobs twice as hard as they should be. I am not an interpreter, I am an MT. I feel that anyone who wants to live and work in this country should learn the language! That doesn't apply only to doctors either.
My son has two students in his class from Venezula this year. They don't speak English AT ALL! So, the school brought in an interpreter for them. I asked the principal if those kids were being taught English. She said "no, but we have to provide an interpreter for them in their classes." I told her that my son has complained to me that it makes it hard for him to pay attention and understand the teacher when he has to hear the interpreter babbling away in Spanish to these children. Ridiculous!!
Fortunately, I have an account now that I only have 3 ESL docs and they are pretty easy to understand. But I remember those days of wanting to rip my hair out and cry from being so frustrated. I can empathize with you.

I have never had any problem, like I mentioned, using my dial-up either. I connect at the fastest rate (50 Kbps) most consistently and I have worked several different types of jobs, on a couple different platforms, using FTP sites, and E-mail, and while I know it takes a little longer it wasn't too the point that I felt it interfered with my production time really and I am not a patient person. :D
I could understand if there is a compatibility issue, of course, but I am not convinced that that is the problem at all with some of these companies.
If we can do the work in the alloted time, than I guess I just don't understand why we can't use dial-up (particularly when it is all we have available). Perhaps someone else can enlighten us ??? :)

It happens more than people would like to believe. My son has been ill his whole life and in and out of hospitals. He has no veins left for IV fluids and medications and his arms are scarred pretty bad. He had his stomach removed and was given methadone for the pain because morphine was entirely too sedating. He became very ill when we were on vacation in Florida, went to the ER, the doctor took one look at his arms, saw that he was on methadone, called the deputies and had him send to the STATE HOSPITAL and labeled him a "drug addict." He wouldn't even listen to his medical history. Once he got to the state hospital, they called immediately and said "this boy is no addict, he's ILL" and sent him right back home.
He rode there with handcuffs on in the back of a police car, crying all the way. The deputy apologized to him and told him it was only his job. We went to the hospital administrator with his records and demanded something be done about the ER doctor and he said it would be handled. This is only one of probably a couple of hundred incidents. We tried to get an attorney, going more after the licensing and not money, and not ONE would take his case.
He's had dirty dressings put back on that caused such infections he required surgery, he was discharged by one doctor while the life flight was on its way to get him - this doctor told the insurance company he was faking and wasn't sick. By the time he got to the next biggest medical center 5 hours away, he required 4 units of blood and was critically ill.
So you who made the snappy comment, you better hope you or your family never have anyone critically ill because this happens and it happens a lot and people die from it. To the poster, I applaud you for having a conscience...it's people like you I would want transcribing MY chart.

We had the same issues with several companies doing our backlog and I spent hours every day fixing their dictations. Very, very frustrating.
I totally do not understand
The company we purchased CyberSynch (Digital) from also maintains FTP site. They told me they would give me FTP address and that I would be able to pull dictations from FTP site? I have never done this before and do not know much about computers other than Microsoft Word, etc.
I have all of my patient files stored on my hard drive.I have folders for each patient and in that folder I have dictations saved by date. Doctor looks at his last dictation and sometimes does not even change anything from previous (all he says is same as last time), so all I do is change the date. I do not know if this makes any sense, but I do need access to my files in order to complete dictations away from home.

I am sorry that most just wanted to criticise or make you feel less than perfect for asking a simple question. Today was apparently a bad day for some on this board, as their ugliness in ALOT of responses to other peoples questions, not just yours, showed through. Everybody has bad days, I suppose, but alot of the responses you received, in my opinion, were totally uncalled for and just posted to cause embarressment. It just shows the small minds in some people, arrogance, egos, and negative attitudes. No wonder this world is in the shape it is in! I am glad someone saw fit to help you out, though, and gives me some hope that not ALL people are so rude. Hope you have a good and productive evening! God bless us, one and all...even the rude ones. Guess they need it more than the *good* ones do! :^)

Even though I'm listening to the reports and typing them out then doing my own proofing and editing someone is having to listen to them again and correct my errors. THAT person deserves and needs to be paid as well. Not to mention the company needs to make a little profit. So even if the company is being paid say, 12cpl, after paying me and my QA I'm sure it comes out fair.
I want to thank everyone here for their advice and opinions and helping me to sort this out in my own mind.

I totally understand your post, and the fact that
the fact that you (and the rest of us) are paid so little for high expected volumes of production, that absolutely ANYTHING that happens to slow us down, even a tiny little bit, is often a financial disaster for those of us living paycheck-to-paycheck and just barely getting by. If we were FAIRLY COMPENSATED for the work we do, instead of being continually CHEATED, UNDERVALUED AND UNDERPAID, then minor glitches like new software, new accounts, ESLs, would be just a bump in the road, not potential food stamps and/or homelessness.
I, too have plenty of work. And I, too am appalled at the fact that no matter how many hours I work, how much faster I try to type (without compromising quality), it seems like it's always SOMETHING. Right when you're clicking along and the income is starting to go up a little bit, they will:
A. Hit you with harder accounts, ESLs, or scratchy, fuzzy-sounding files that even a bat couldn't hear clearly.
B. Have a huge push to get absolutely everything in TAT, right before a holiday or long weekend when you KNOW it's going to fall off, and half of us will be scrounging for work.
C. 'Upgrade' the working platform, (which translates to: )
D. Put all these obstacles and hoops you have to jump through in your way, which are big time-wasters: Meetings, 'training', and various PC and program tweaks.
E. Decide to take their server down for maintenance, and it's always during YOUR shift.
F. While you're midway through a l-o-n-g, 1 hr, 45-min. dictation, which has a mushmouthed/ESL dictator, is very technical and requires a lot of research on drugs, procedures and equipment that is too new to be in the references yet, and during the entire dictation, a loud going-away party for one of the nurses is going on just a few feet away from the dictator, who is eating and while dictating, and occasionally turning away from the microphone to watch the tipsy party attendees, all the while continuing to dictate. The report was of course STAT, and was 30 min. away from TAT when you downloaded it. Then your supe calls you in the middle of all this and asks you what you're doing, and where the report is.

When it comes to something like that, that I usually take care of but for whatever reason I can't, I will tell my husband exactly what to do, but when he comes back - to use your case as a "for instance" - I will ask him, "Did the doctor look at his foot?"
Him: "No."
Me: "Did you ask the doctor to look at his foot?"
Him: "No."
Me: "I told you to have the doctor look at his foot!"
Him: (shrug)
etc., etc., etc.
Your husband may not be like that - I sure hope he isn't. And yes, they should have checked his vitals and checked his foot without being asked. But sometimes you have to be assertive with people. And while my husband attained the rank of major in the Air Force and had no trouble ordering people around, there are times when he should be assertive but isn't. And he is not intimidated by doctors - he started his AF career as an x-ray tech (that's how we met). I dunno....(Rad MT wanders off, mumbling....)

Do you actually think these people are all addicts? These are the common people who could not afford to get out, probably making a lot less an hour than you do. They had no vehicle, and they left their homes with all their possessions in their arms. These people are starving and dying on the streets. It could just as easily have been you or me, and they just want to survive! If it had been a foreign country, help would have been there lickity split.

Does not sound bad to me! The only thing is...be sure to check out what other posters said about "Are they making you claim 13 cpl or just what you are really getting, which is 9.75 cpl." You do not want to claim more than you are receiving. Don't worry about the taxes. They are a headache but you would be, basically, self-employed and would have to pay federal taxes just like EVERYONE does, and you would have to pay BOTH your share of SS, just like we all do anyway, PLUS the employers half of SS. Then, at the end of the year, you get the employers half back on your federal income tax form. You might even have to fill quarterly, but maybe not if you don't make very much. An accountant could give you advise on all this.

They know what is coming. So now we pay big
bucks for tons of ice to melt in warehouses in northern states because of incompetence of govt officials. Maybe if people relied less on the govt we could have lower taxes.
I do not object to helping those in areas who have a disaster that cannot be predicted such as an earthquake, but it seems that Florida wants everyone to rebuild their houses several times a year and feed them even longer. Those areas are known to be hurricane prone, so get out when disaster is coming.
At least they got a little of what they had coming to them.
I don't envy you at all. I know my husband would have no qualms about closing the road leading to their house. Unfortunately, you still have to live near them, so probably don't want to cause any more problems than necessary.

They might just get what's coming to them
Already thousands of people in the U.S. are going to India for their medical care. They can pay for the flight there and back, a top-notch operation in a top-notch facility with a private nurse and a private room afterwards, some time to vacation and recuperate--all for about 25% of what it would cost just to have the operation in the U.S., forget all the other goodies. What goes around comes around. When a doctor gives you the "I don't give a crap" look when you discuss offshoring, do be sure to bring up how offshoring affects him as well.
I see where you are coming from
but I don't feel the need to type fast for low wages. I type fast too, but I don't like to compromise patient care by being a speed demon. It is just too dangerous in my opinion.  Why are you so against someone staying at home to take care of children meanwhile making a little part-time money? Not all newbies only make 8 cpl. Not all newbies sign up to work for the nationals that post jobs here either. Not everyone that posts here work for nationals either. JMO.
No, I see where you are coming from.
However, you have to understand that most MTs are not paid hourly and are paid per line. Some of us with 20 years are still only offered between 8-10 cpl if we're lucky.
Just be ready to job hunt and read here about the different companies. Spheris big time off shores and underpays.
You may want to either go to school (hopefully your hospital pays for that) or look for another on-site job that pays hourly. With Spheris you'll have to work from home (which sounds dandy) until you actually do it.
It works well for me right now, but I plan to get back on site as soon as my kids get a little older. It is very hard to separate work from home when you work from home.
There will probably be no benefits for you either especially at part-time.
You could wait until the bridge is there to cross it, try out Spheris, and then go from there.

There are a bunch of shows that start later, "mid-season" and the only dates I can find are "early 2007", but I was wondering about Medium is how I found it. Medium will be back mid-season, along with Scrubs, According to Jim, Reba, George Lopez, King of Queens, Supernanny, The Sopranos American Idol, America's Got Talent, etc...... bunch of them!

It sounds like it will be a huge improvement over the latest QLDB, because people who have always used QLDB are saying the latest one doesn't work as efficiently in past. So go to this website to order Sauders. CD isn't scheduled to be released until November, though.

Hayseed I know just where you are coming from
I have been in that position myself. Not so much with the "pager" thing, but getting calls at different times and with the company for example being on the West Coast and me being 3 hours ahead and them not forgetting the time difference. It truly is "between a rock and hard place" because these companies KNOW who their "good and dedicated employees" are and will frequently use it to their advantage and forgetting that we are also human. I for one too, have a hard time with companies that utilize an "instant messenger program" with their MTs, because as you mentioned, when you are constantly receiving an IM, it cuts way down on productivity. Hope your day gets better as it progresses.
Coming into money sm
I hate that expression, how does one come "into" money. If she truly earned it, which it sounds like she did not, then she is splurging at best. Makes one wonder why we who work so hard for a living, penny upon penny, line after line, make such sacrifices for those who think they can automatically come into it. Sorry, but I hate that phrase and it is usually used by losers. Whatever the situation, it is sad that the come-into money is not used for future generations so those who earned the come-into money would not have toiled and sweat for those who came into it and either sit on their assets or splurge it. No feelings here except for disgust! You reap what you sow in this world and the only way is hard work, too bad they cannot use their come-into money for better things than piddle it away.

all I can say is let the Indians have the work, and U.S. QA and editors stop fixing the mess that comes back. It will only be a matter of time before clients start dropping like flies when they receive unintelligible reports. Sorry, but if you have overseas MTs and overseas QA, you are asking for a disaster! I have seen first hand the mess that comes back from Indian MTs, and their work is not even worth the .03 per line they are making. I would compare this as wanting to move to France to transcribe for a French doctor when I have no skills or experience with their language. How long do you think my job would last? U.S. QAs, please do not be enablers for our industry to thrive overseas.

I have an interview coming up for PT with an ortho clinic ON SITE. I have 3 years experience in acute care and op notes and getting paid 7/cpl right now working at home. What line rate or pay per hour do you think I should ask for now that I'd be buying clothes and gas?

from and those are all good suggestions. I really hope they aren't trying to edge me out. I haven't had any problems with them. See the thing I like about this place is unless they need to talk to you then you really don't hear anything from them. My manager, I never get an email, IM, nothing, very rarely. They act like they are happy with my work. They haven't said any different. So as far as attitude goes they don't communicate with me enough to really even know what kind of attitude I have. Honestly I do the work and the money is direct deposited and I never talk to them unless I go to them for some reason which is rare. My work goes directly to the client and I have worked on this account for 1-1/2 years now so I rarely have blanks. I pretty much know the docs in and out. As far as the amount they have to pay me well I only make .075 cpl so I can't imagine they are trying to get away with less than that.
As far as applying and sending resumes out I don't even get phone calls for them to see how my mannerisms are. I have gotten very little email replies most just to say they aren't hiring cause I send resumes to places that aren't even advertising for jobs. Just in case they need someone. I have showed my resume to a fellow MT who has 10 years exp and she thought it was fine. They either aren't hiring or they are insistent on 2 years or they want acute care, which my exp in is slim.
Thanks for the suggestions though as far as to watch how I present myself.
One thing I think may be the problem is I think they may have more MTs than work. I noticed there are probably 5 or 6 MTs on this one account I work on and there are only 2 docs. It could be there isn't enough work to go around. BUT that is why I asked for a backup account but they said all the accounts are fully staffed. I don't know.

I am definitely not interested in working in the court system, 8-5/M-F YUCK! But I understand a lot of CR trained people work from home as closed captioners. I've got an appointment for an informational interview with the head of the CR department of a local business college. Want to explore the feasibility. Let you know what I learn.

Way back 30 years ago I was a single mom and was looking for every extra buck I could find to feed my children. I think I got $15 for my platelets per time back then, maybe every two weeks? Good luck. You do what you have to do. I felt safe in the environment where I donated.

So when are you coming over to shampoo my rugs?
They get soooooooo dirty, sooooooooo fast. I'm talking light pink here. We do have an Electrolux carpet shampooer and we honestly use it at least once a month for full carpet cleaning and even more for spot cleaning. Otherwise I'd have a pink rug with brown stripes. :)

Did you lose the weight after coming off?
I'm gonna check into the things you mentioned and go by my local health food store. Before I went on the HRT, I did try the OTC stuff which seemed to work for a little while, but after a few months started having the hot flashes again. I did purchase some progesterone cream a few years ago while I was still having periods (after watching a segment of Oprah), but never used it right, then went on the HRT. I really do want to get off of it and get my weight down. Did you have trouble getting weight back down after coming off?

You probably received an email from your supervisor about full time meaning you HAVE TO produce for 40 hours a week to be full time. That means, if you take any time off without pay (because you only have 80 hours of PTO a year) for ANYTHING (sick, funeral, whatever the emergency), you will no longer be a full time employee, which means no benefits at all.
Wow, it's all slowly coming back to me
flexibility. As long as you do your 40 or plus pages per day.
