am a licensed respiratory therapist, have been for 5.5 years. I started transcription 12 years ago after attending a program through a community college, however, from what I've been reading, there are several really good online programs like Andrews and M-Tec. Once you finish these programs, it's best if you can get on at a hospital to get the much needed in-house experience that most, if not all, home transcription companies want before hiring. Although, I recently read that either Andres or M-Tec have a 100% hire rate after graduation from their programs. I'm just getting back into the MT field so I can work from home, but also I'm keeping my license and working RT one day a week. I can tell you, the pay is about the same, once you get your line count up and experience. Actually, I took a pay cut when I initially went into RT work (a pretty big pay cut), so I'm hoping to get back up to that amount eventually. I defintely would'nt discourage you from at least trying this field. I know a lot of people on here are looking into other fields like nursing, etc., but having done RT work, I got tired of the politics, of which I'm sure you know of, and all the red tape. Let me know if I can be of any help as I have tons of reference books, practice dictation tapes and other items if you decide to go into this field.
