Word counts the blank lines between paragraphs unless you change
your paragraph style to double space when you hit enter. You need to change the "after" setting in the spacing section of the paragraph dialog box to the point size of the font you are using and click the Default button. You'll probably want to do this in a separate template unless you want this setting for all new documents.
You can set Word to not count blank lines by changing your paragraph style
to automatically double space after the paragraph.
Don't overuse but have to blank and counted off for it?
Right now am really bumfuzzled as I do not know in my MTing career if this has happened before. I was just told from a company where I have worked for some time that blanks are counted off. I do not just leave to be leaving, absolutely cannot make out and really taken aback to be truthful. Do most places do this to their MTs? Is this just another way to make their pockets fuller?
Gross lines are not counted in characters.
A gross line = any number of characters on a line counts as a complete line. The actual number of characters per line will vary.
Well, counted my lines for first hour and I made
602 at 4 cents = $24.00 for the hour. Not bad, huh?
If they have access to how the lines are counted on the back end - see inside
They can go in and maybe make changes to what their counts actually were.  Anything is possible.  It does sound fishy to me.  I would go to your supervisor and ask in such a way as could the other girls possibly show you any tricks they are using that might benefit all of you and open up communication that way.  That way you are not accusing anyone of anything.  Worth a try.
Chars aren't counted in gross lines. If you have a 4-line paragraph...sm
you have 4 gross lines, no matter how long or short the sentences are. A heading on it's own line is 1 gross line. A signature on it's own line is 1 gross line. The date at the top of a document on it's own line is 1 gross line. Anything on a line going from margin to margin is 1 gross line, no matter how few or many characters, or if there are spaces or not, even if there's only 1 character on that line like 'A' for instance. Does this  help? :)
If you are typing in Word or WP, every character will be counted.
If you are being paid by keystroke, that would be different, like the other poster said.

I once worked for a company that paid per 1,000 characters.

My beginning rate was $1.25/1,000 characters (0.00125/character) which was the same as 0.08/line.

I was gradually raised to $1.85/1,000 characters(0.00185/character)which was the same as 0.12/line.

Hope this helps! Good luck!
If the names are in the header they won't be counted by Word. nm

blank lines also
When I started my surgical/oncology account 6 years ago, the gal that had been doing it charged for blanks, from first line to the last line on letters, consults, etc. All blanks were counted so I just continued, the OM, docs are well aware of it.  Also, that is why my cpl is lower than others also, it usually averages out in the wash.
Take out all blank lines
Go through and take out all blank lines and count or put on your line count on your file and see how many blanks there are and subtract.  Remember if you have a header though on pg 2 and 3, it does not count those lines.  Also I think that Sylcount will count lines only and no blanks.  Also when doing your line count in MS word, it gives you the paragraphs and so if it is 20, subtract 20 lines,  date to address is 4,  address to RE is 2,  RE to salutation is 2, etc.  Usually there are ten blanks from date to Dear.    Good luck.
You charge for blank lines? WOW! That's a first!

charge for blank lines
not my idea, but I'll take it!
You could just go through and delete all the blank lines.
Since it is just a test, why not try doing that?
I mean without blank lines in between patient notes

Our Meditech counts BLANK lines...
we get a sweet line count off our account that uses Meditech.
Some of my accounts are charged for blank lines..nm

Abacus and Word 2003

Has anyone used Abacus with Word 2003 and does it work?  If not, any other nice line count programs out there that creat patient lists/invoices?

thanx

Does anyone use abacus with Word 2007? sm

I've used abacus 2.1 for years. Now I have Vista with Word '07 and I was told that 2.1 and 3.0 would work, but either would be hard to configure. I'm not sure what that really means and would like to hear from anyone who is using it about problems or advice.

7 cpl gross and counts blank lines, IC status-- make a ton of money because it's easy work...nm

EXText word client blank screen everytime I login
I am using EXText Word Client software with Transnet. I am getting a blank screen everytime I login. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software an upgraded but still errors out the same way. Are there any EXtexters who could help?

Gross line, also including blank lines because my line rate is so low. It all works out in the wash.

Calculating lines using Word Count in Word
I have recently started a job where lines are calculated using the Microsoft Word word count tool. I think I read that you get cheated out of lines if a company counts this way. Is this true?
ahh I thought she was asking how many lines she would get. lol I think i need coffee

EXText word client blank screen everytime I give ok in DIS screen
Thanks your suggestion was very valuable. At a specified time (which the technical side say, when the net speed is very good), it is working without a problem at all (whereas this was half working and half not working before even at this time), but other times, still the same problem exists.

Actually the blank screen comes every time I give "ok" in the DIS screen (patient details info screen).
I have a QA question. Is it normal to divide your errors by your total lines? I thought

it was supposed to be your errors by either total characters or total words, but total lines just doesn't seem right.  You do a 90 line report and have one error (that is counted as two points) and you have a 97.78%.  I put an instead of a (on accident of course) and got docked two points and failed the review for that patient.  That just doesn't seem right.

Is this normal?

Word count: 824 lines. DocuCount count: 897 lines.
I just counted the same file in Word and then in DocuCount, and DocuCount was higher than Word.

Just as an aside.
How can you count your lines in Word, I used

to use the word count in Word and then divide it by something to get a standard line count for that report. Has anyone done this before? I forgot the way to calculate when working in Word.

Counting lines in Word
This actually gives you way more lines than if you calculated by 65 cpl.  I worked for a company for a while that did this and on one short progress note I made over $3 more than by figuring the 65 cpl way.  Let's say they are paying you 7 cents a line......this is like 11 cents a line counting the regular way.  This is definitely in your favor...I have done the math on this one many times.  Good luck!
Does PRD work with MS Word? I thought it was for WP 5.1 DOS only? - sm
Or am I getting confused? I have PRD for 5.1; but now use Smartype for WP 5.1 DOS (like it a lot better)....yes it also works on XP but it took me me a LONG time to figure it out. I have passed the "how to" manual onto a lot of people over the last 2 years. Its actually quite simple once you know how. An inexpensive word Expander is Shortcut, and they have the one they sell here Flashtype that is inexpensive as well. I know Shortcut works fine with 98.
Search myself?? Thought that was what word boards are for!

WRONG! lol

Imagine that! Searching Google or where ever and taking a moment longer to click into a link or 2 and do a bit of research to make certain the site is reputable and the information correct.

What an original concept.

I've always felt that blurting out an answer (whether right or wrong, but hopefully right) without offering up some search tips only hurts the questioning MT in the long run.

Not long ago, this here word board was offline for some time. Where did folks find the answers then?

On top of everything else we need to know as MTs, we also need to be self-reliant and have excellent research skills. You don't get that way from being given the answer on a word board. It comes from reading, reasearching and attempting to understand what you are transcribing.

Don't get me wrong, we all need help on occasion, but for the most part, I know I can do my job, and those that give the answers can do their jobs, but the ones always asking the questions...can they make it in this field without word board help?

My vote is for teaching them how to research on their own.

That's my 2 cents on this issue.

Did you just say: You can very easily "add lines by inserting a word here and there"
I recall back in the mid 1990s, I was working with a fellow MT who was on midnight shift in medical records. He was making a huge sum of money and we all thought he was "the Whiz."

Come to find out, he was inserting phrases, embellishing dictated sentences I guess you'd call it, to get more lines per report. He got away with it for a number of years but was kissing up to the supervisor and director, always available to help out, nicest guy in the world - but a thief - who fooled us all.

Radiologist would surely notice eventually if not QA.
Word Macro to count Lines Strict inside

Hi,

The solutions others gave are good, but if I just needed to get the number of lines with typing (and don't need an invoice or a report), I'd use a Word macro.

The other solutions offered have this drawback: If the body of your document contains tables, the count Word gives you is vastly inflated, for Word counts each cell in that table as a line. This is not what the eye sees, and becomes problematic when you try to justify such to your client.

Below is a macro for counting what we at Emmaus call Lines Strict. (i.e. Lines with typing on them, vs Lines Extended that includes the blank lines).

To use it, copy from Public Sub through End Sub, and paste it into your macros along with your other macros. Easiest way of doing this is (after you have copied the appropriate lines):

1. Click Tools | Macros, and select an existing macro.

2. Click the Edit button.

3. Once the Visual Basic Editor opens, press Ctrl+End to move to the bottom.

4. Paste the clipboard contents.

5. Click File | Compile Normal. (If you've pasted things that don't belong, it won't compile.)

6. Click File | Close and Return to MS Word.

Merry Christmas!

OOPS! I looked at the HTML code after I pasted the code into the editor on this board, and it added things that when pasted into the Visual Basic Editor in Word will not compile. Here's the code if you want to retype it, but pasting won't work. If you send me an email, I'll attach the code into a .txt document, and you won't have any problems.  vjoet@attglobal.net

When is a word only 5 characters. I thought 7-10 was an average and 10 words a line? nm

How errors are counted
Unfortunately, there isn't a universal way of counting errors to quote a per cent accuracy. Basically, where I work, 98% accuracy would mean there were 2 noncritical word error in 100 lines (not characters).

When you hear quotes of alleged 95% accuracy in speech recognition, it probably means 5 errors in 100 characters, not lines.

Again, with offshore companies claiming 98% accuracy, who knows how they are counting?

But you are right, we all make errors, and I have seen stupid ones in my own reports that I would have felt bad if I hadn't caught them. I am sure doctors sometimes get laughs out of our bloopers the same way we get laughs out of theirs.

IC - 8-10 cpl but line is counted

The main factor really with IC work is the flexibility.  So many companies offer IC positions, but they want you to work certain hours - wrong, wrong, wrong!  JMO.  It is so funny because I sit and think, "wow", "I can work online and not have to go anywhere", but it sure is nice to go old-school once in a while and throw a tape in the old microtranscriber and type away making $$$ out the ying-yang.

The original poster got me, and that's what counted!
Sorry to disappoint, but she got my point!
How about counted cross stitch
I've been doing it since I was 16-17 yrs old and it is the one thing I constantly go back to after doing anything else crafty.... just so relaxing
MQ not paying for spaces -- just manually counted and it don't add up

anyone know?  Just went from straight line count to DQS...

used to type 500 lph, now barely 150 lph....

AND NO COUNT FOR SPACES....

DAMMIT, THAT'S A KEY STROKE

Really? I never save mine in .rft, only .doc, & they are counted just fine.
nm
line counts are counted within the report
and depend on how it is set up. They can vary the line lengths and also whether or not it counts blank lines. There is no spellchecker. I think the most important thing to learn is whether or not you sign on through a Citrix server. In that case, you will more than likely get lag, which will kill your radiology line count.
This is my method
Listen up, Bozo! Don't you have stains you need removed?

Oh that's right, your hemorrhoids bled all over your carpet and now you are mad at us. We didn't do it, your hemorrhoids did!

Get a grip and go stop your bleeding hemorrhoids, and for pitty sakes, clean up your chair - it's full of blood!
It doesn't sound right to me. That one MINOR error should only be counted
as 1/2 point because it's not critical to patient care.
Not included. Demos and ccs are headers/footers. Not counted. nm

post thumbs down votes aren't being counted
If you've tried to vote thumbs down on the two posts by computerboy advertising illegal downloads of Stedman's items, you'll be interested to know that the forum is instead counting them as "thumbs up" votes.
It all depends on what method your

potential clients use.  If you solicit someone that still uses tapes you need to be sure you have the equipment for that, etc.    I don't know if maybe someone has a sample of a solicitation letter to give you an idea of what to send out to potential clients.

Your method of proofreading? -- SM
I feel like I'm pretty slow on my lph because I might spend too much time proofing. Sometimes I proof each section before starting the next. Sometimes I just do the whole report and then go back and proofread in one shot.

Is there a best way? I don't dare skip proofing because about once per report I do find that I left out a word or did something similar, and I wouldn't want it to go through like that...so I know I need to invest the time.

What are your tips to speed up???
