Spheris hires Canadian MTs and has Canadian accts. Can't answer the wage question. So much depe
dd
I go through this every year when the school district starts hiring.
And I have cabin fever really, really bad from being home with the kids almost 24/7. Plus, I don't get much adult interaction in the summer because all of my friends are busy with their own families, vacations, work, etc. We don't get together as often as during the school year.
The work part of it is OK. I have good accounts, but it can be boring or frustrating with interruptions. Like the other poster, I have to play music in the background and buckle down to be productive. However, there is something to be said for the flexibility that I have in working at home. I'm here for the kids. I can take a break whenever I want to. I don't have to get dressed up or drive anywhere. No office politics. No supervisor screaming at me. No out-of-town travel. I have my own office now. I have total control over the thermostat. I can eat whatever I want to whenever I want to. I'm saving money by not using daycare. I make as much or more working part-time than if I worked fulltime, paid daycare, and had to drive to and from a job. Best of all, I have time during the day to exercise, clean the house, or do my hobbies. I'm not so exhausted by the end of the day that I just slap food on the table and veg out in front of the TV. I don't watch TV at all any more! For me, the benefits are still good enough to keep doing this for at least a few more years. I can always go back into the workforce when the kids are older.
Canadian ICs
HI Denise - I am a recent grad of an MT program in BC and just signed on as an IC for a Florida Company. I start in a couple of weeks. I've found that lots of US MTSOs will hire an IC from Canada. That is not really an issue as long as you are a grad of a respected course and do well on the testing. The hard part is getting your foot in the door without any experience!! I am not familiar with the CareerStep course. I've heard of it of course but have not researched it lately. I took the Advanced Medical Transcription Program through Selkirk College via distance ed. I can highly recommend this one and employers seem to be impressed with the grads. Let ME know if you would like further information.
PS - A new baby in November? Boy, you must be pretty energetic to consider taking on something like this at this time!!

It doesn't bother me. It is hard to articulate why, in a logical way, so I have to just explain from my gut. I feel that they are our "kinfolk." In my mind, they are our neighbors, in a way that I feel closer to than other countries. Therefore, it's like more "sharing" of "our" workload, rather than "them" sort of "stealing" the work from "us." No "Us and Them" attitude with me, on the issue of Canadians. Yet, I feel that way strongly about India and Philippines and whoever else comes up the pike "stealing" our work. I realize this isn't logical, but hey, you asked. Does anyone else feel the way I feel?
To "I am canadian"
I'm sorry you're Canadian. I lived in northern Vermont for awhile and could only get Canadian TV. From that I learned how much you people hate us and envy us. But of course, you don't mind taking our money and taking our help when you need it.
Exactly how do you know what the people dying in Afghanistan are innocent?
Like of the rest of the world, you were too ready to dip in this country's deep pockets and you sued us when some of your Canadians were mistakenly killed by some U.S. pilots. With allies like you, we don't need enemies.
By the way, wasn't your lily white Canadian government involved in the British invasion of Las Malvinas, or as you would probably call it, The Falklands War? Do you think you Canadians killed any innocent people there?
Keep up your bellyaching - that's the only thing Canadians know how to do, other than drink beer and ice skate. Sooooooo, how aboot that, heh?
My kid stopped going at 18.....SM
She liked her pediatrician so much she stayed until 18.....
Re QA, has anyone stopped
looking at their edited reports? I simply cannot do it anymore. For 18 years I have been transcribing medical reports, and the more I type the worse QA seems to think I am. It is to the point I cannot bear to look at my reports anymore...it is crazy with tiny little errors and it only makes me sick, literally. Then if I want to take 1/2 hour out of my time I can relisten to all my reports, and 8 out of 10 times it is a 50-50 chance of who is right but of course it is always the editor. I get through the 'grunt' work, piecing together a puzzle from some horrendous dictator, with a 99% completed report, send to QA for 1 blank, and it comes back with 3 or 4 ridiculous noncritical errors which matter nothing to the content of the report, and all because someone was able to 'listen' against my already typed report (aww, that is so hard!) and found 'is' where it is totally questionably there or not, and I am sick of fighting it anymore. I have spent WAY TOO MUCH time worrying about this ridiculous stuff. What I want to know is: Does anyone else not look anymore, and how much can it hurt. There are editors who just want to mark off for something, anything, and make a name for themselves it seems even at the expense of ruining someone's QA score. How about I just stop looking and let a manager fire me one day because my score is down...who cares anymore. I will not even respond to posts with the attitude that we need to provide quality to the customers blah blah blah - hey, if hospitals wanted quality the work would NOT be going overseas to ESL transcriptionists in the very first place, nor would capitation be in place and all the woes that has brought, nor would our personal information be 'out there' floating around so some day it can be breached. That argument is totally lost on me. American MTs get constant abuse from not only the dictators but again also from editors, all the while reports come back from India or elsewhere with never a care or problem from hospitals at their quality or errors...oh it is a big joke all the time how many errors they make but that is okay, that is acceptable for them. For us - look out, you are constantly harassed and repeatedly tormented on a daily basis over this. It is not right, it just is not right.
Canadian MTing?
Are there any Canadian MT's on this site? I am from canada and wondering where I go to find jobs in the US for Canadian's to work! What is a fair wage? Any help would be very much appreciated!
Why not try a Canadian company?
www.absmed.com (I don't think they are hiring, but you can check it out).
www.terranovatrans.com
www.healthenet.net
Hope that helps!
Canadian rates, please help
Could any of you help me in making this very important decision please? I have contacts that can help me get contracts from a small Physical therapy/chiropractic care clinic in Alberta, Canada. But, I have no clue as to how much is charged per 65 cpl with spaces in Canada. Considering that one US dollar is equivalent to Canadian $1.15, I guess I would perhaps be able to get a better rate. But how much would you say is a rate that would do justice to both parties? Anyone doing a similar work from Canada, working MTs with MT companies in Canada, please help. Any input will be welcome…Thank you….Maple
CANADIAN MT COMPANIES
I am from Ontario.
There are two companies in BC: www.absmed.com and
www.northpacificmedtrans.com
Check these out - I think they only hire local at home MTs.

$1.29 to our dollar so if the Canadian MTs...sm
If Canadian MTs are making more $$ than American MTs, it all evens out. Also, the national health care system in Canada is currently under revision and my cousin tells me it takes her 6 months to get an appointment for an XRAY in Calgary!!!........
Canada's dollar is not as strong as our dollar in the US and I LOVE CANADA so please do not think I'm bashing that wonderful sister country of ours.
canadian pharmacy
Hi, I've used feelbest.com (located in Ottawa, Ontario) numerous times and have had nothing but good results -- give them a try!
Re: Canadian Companies
I would work for either, I just find more and more American companies not taking Canadians. I get nailed with taxes either way. I used to work for Spheris and then took a year off and was told I would be on re-hire status and when I went to re-apply was told they no longer higher Canadians.
also had a French Canadian
very difficult... now if I ever hear a doctor with a New Zealand accent I think I will recognize it - very distinctive - have heard it only in a few movies.
Canadian Needing Help
Hey everyone, I'm Canadian and am currently researching possible MT schools. I was originally thinking Canscribe, but am not so sure anymore (I read on another forum that they don't train students enough, and I want the best possibly training so that I am great at my future job). I know M-Tec and Andrews School are seemingly the top two schools in America, but I kind of wanting to attend a Canadian based school possibly. If anyone can help me out, I would really appreciate it. Also, if someone knows a Canadian based MT forum please let me know. I have been trying to find but it doesn't seem like there is any out there.
Thanks so much for your time!

from canadian newspaper
I am sorry, I can't provide the link but it is a direct quote from a Canadian publication.
"Because the health care plan is regulated by the government, bureaucracy shows it's ugly head. Waiting lists are long and wait times for certain procedures are equally long. For instance, in New Brunswick, a person requiring heart a bypass procedure may wait for up to six months. A knee replacement in Ontario takes about the same. These waiting times are expected and those in need should prompt their doctors to be proactive in diagnosing the problems and gaining access to the waiting list at the earliest possible instance."
Okay, wanna wait six months for your CABG? You'd be dead. I do see that as a problem, don't you. I am sure there are Canadians who love it, just as I am certain there are those who don't. I would like to know where you got that 5% statistic from, though. I don't mean that as a smart aleck remark. I really would like to know if that is the case. Can you point me in a direction that would verify that?
You might get answer on the Canadian website

re: a canadian MT who lives next to MAINE
I have a MT company from portland, Maine who w ants me to work for them as an IC. They offered me 7 cents per line american. WHat a freakin joke!!
I wont work for under 12 cents per line and I have been out of it for awhile (6 years!!).
See ya!!
Boycott Canadian Seafood
Due to the horrible seal hunt the HSUS is asking that we boycott Canadian seafood as a way of protesting the hunt. The hunters get the majority of their income from their jobs as fishermen so boycotting their products will hurt them in turn for them hurting the baby seals. Thanks.
I'd love to help - how do we know if the seafood is Canadian or not though?

Canadian Health Care
A 6-8 week wait time to see a gynecologist? Is that good or bad for the US. I personally have been waiting to see an endocrinologist for 1 year, 3 months...still nothing. Seriously. The wait time for any type of procedure of specialty is actually quite scary. Sometimes it feels as though we are in Russia, we just happen to pay more taxes. We "pay" for our health care with 13% tax on absolutely everything you buy. That is supposedly for health care, but it really doesn't seem to help. I personally believe the problem is in the fact there are not enough doctors. When you compare how many doctors there are in each specialty to the amount of patients that require them, that is where the wait time comes into play. Ironically, Canada is starting to implement "pay as you go" clinics for procedures because the wait time is so ridiculous. It seems that Canada is adopting the US's health system and the US is looking to adopt Canada's system. That reminds me of something...the grass is always greener on the other side (nope, same grass, different place). Take care all.
I stopped letting them do that.
Too many times they had inexperienced techs who messed everything up. Once my computer crashed because of what they did. Another time, another company, they deleted a program and nothing would work right. Just because they say they are a computer tech does not mean they know anything. Many do not even have a certificate, just a litle on the job training.
That was a while ago and they stopped docking pay.

I have a question. How do you have 2 list open at the same time? I can merge 2 list but I don't know or see a way to have 2 separate list open.
p.s. This is a work computer, not my PC, so the software may or may not be the same.
Any Canadian MTs here? Am thinking of moving north. Could you
I am interested in knowing a few things about living in Canada and working for the U.S. company. I also understand Canadian medical institutions utilize MTs. Would like to correspond with an MT living in Canada.
My e-mail address is above. If you have time to answer a few questions, please e-mail. I am considering moving to B.C., Vancouver or Okanagan Valley depending what I find during my scouting of each area; am presently in California.
Thank you!

all this talk about canadian/european healthcare...
My family and I may be moving to Poland temporarily, maybe 3 years or so (job opportunity for hubby). I only have one kidney and have been fine all my life until recently, now doctor says I have a stricture in the urethra and wants to do surgery. Apparently it's not a minor surgery, has a 2-week recovery period to just feel normal, and needs at least 6-month followups to doctor for monitoring to make sure there isn't scar buildup tissue, etc., oh and a stent will need to be removed 4 weeks after the surgery (in-office procedure). I am going to have the surgery here but in the event we do move to Poland it will be sometime later this year, which means I'd be following up over there. What are your thoughts on this?
They stopped making those back around
1914. But hope you find one anyway! Main thing is be happy with yourself and your life. Funny thing is years ago my son wanted a fish tank, so we kept upgrading to larger sizes, going from 5 gallon, to 10 to 35 and then 40 gallon. At that point, I told my son, "I will not get a larger tank because I will not get married just to have a man around to carry that ding-dong tank!!" That is the way I live my life; what I can handle and what makes me happy and trying not to have to depend on a DH to help. Maybe one day, I'll find a good man just to hang around with. Have a beautiful day!!
I took Relora but stopped. What really worked was sm
eliminating all the refined sugars and "white" carbs from my diet and beginning a sensible exercise program. I had my cortisol measured and it was through the roof. After adhering to this type of diet since last March, I have lost over 30 lb and have really gotten into exercise and am training for a 60 mile bike ride next month.

believe me, outsourcing out of the country will be stopped soon. sm
Do you know how many U.S. doctors or clinics who contract with a US transcription co. who outsources actually know their patient's confidentiality records are leaving the country? ...very few. These docs are clueless, not by their own fault, but by the deceiving company who represents themself as a U.S. based co. (which may be true). However, they fail to "share the info. with the doc" informing them "by the way, we send your dictation to India". This info. IMO has just started to surface for access by physicians. If HIPAA passes the strict regulations on patient confidentiality, you don't think there's gonna be a big crack-down on this? U.S. MT's and honest US based transcription companies need to ride the bumps in the road now because things will get better for us. We are not talking about outsourcing work to China to sew shirts to bring back to the US dept. stores, we are talking about patient medical records. I was once a small MTSO, and I can say with 100% certainty, I would not take the legal chance of playing with patient medical records by sending them out of the country, not to mention taking jobs away from US MTs. If MTSOs were not outsourcing, our pay scale would go up and you could probably find better employees who were willing to work harder, thus reducing your costs for editing, etc.
I stopped by the office and everyone was way too polite.
The part where she cut off the clinical diagnosis and then typed "love your chest report, great work!" on it was what sent me into a spin.
the only reason I stopped doing local
accounts and tapes is because HIPAA came about and said that tapes being transported were in violation - so I went with a national - and now our information is going to Pakistan, India, Philipines - think we all felt safer with tapes.
I stopped using artificial anything years ago and
ANYTHING with artificial sweetner of any kind, no matter how far down on the label it is, makes me sick. I get sick to my stomach, get a headache and just feel horrible! I cannot convince any doctor of this and when I went to a bariatric specialist to loose weight he all but told me I was crazy. Even gave me samples knowing they had artificial sweetner in them, but didn't tell me that. I used them, got sick and took them back for a refund and never went back.
I HATE when people (such as grandparents, and well meaning parents) give my kids things with artificial sweetners in them. Especially when they know I am against it.
I live by one word now....MODERATION. If it says anywhere on it "sugar free" it goes back on the shelf. But they are getting better and better about hiding it. Its even hard to find a protein bar without it in it!!!
nevermind...stopped working again.

I stopped going to the doctor since our clinic
decided to outsource transcription services and lay off the entire department. I don't want my medical records leaving this state. If I do need medical care, I'll go to the ER or an independent physician. The problem is that nobody knows or understands what happens to their medical records.
Many co. use Canadian MTs. There are also many accounts in Canada held by U.S. MTSOs

Americans should be so lucky as to be paid what some Canadian transcriptionists are.
Job security, union jobs, full benefits, 1 year of maternity leave, parental leave, vacation time, sick time, $18 or more an hour...
Can anyone recommend a good, safe Canadian pharmacy? NM

Had it and it worked okay but then suddenly stopped working
Found out every Transcriptionist using a C-phone had that problem. Magic Jack changed something one weekend about 1-1/2 to 2 months ago and it no longer works with a foot pedal.
